- Dumbledorito, on 05/29/2009, -3/+20"Eliminating or reducing executive-level bonuses."
I note that "firing idiots responsible for running the company into the ground" isn't listed, which is a shame, given the penalties for such acts by those who don't have a key to the executive washroom. - gvoakes, on 05/29/2009, -0/+15I absolutely LOVE telecommuting when I can
- mtnboy, on 05/29/2009, -1/+13Eliminating Bonuses is the best way. I think employees should understand if they don't get a bonus this year its all good because atleast their company is still there.
- centran, on 05/29/2009, -0/+11They forgot try to make employee's quit by making their lives miserable.
- wezman2, on 05/29/2009, -1/+10um... that's probably because the article is titled: "11 WAYS BUSINESSES ARE CUTTING COSTS WITHOUT FIRING EMPLOYEES"
- Julie188, on 05/29/2009, -0/+8Some companies are cutting salaries of the line workers. I'd rather have unpaid weeks of time off then be asked to work harder for less money, but whaddyagonnado?
- AmyVernon, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5The folks at my former place of employ have each been ordered to take a one-week unpaid "furlough" each quarter so far this year and expect it to continue through the year. Higher-level managers have to take two weeks unpaid each quarter, starting with the second. For some couples where both spouses work there, it's a pretty big blow to their bottom line, but they still feel it's better than the alternative.
- xsecretfiles, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5Thanks, but I wanna go work for Michael Scott instead!
- mtgn37, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5The company I work for hasn't!
- Rivfader, on 05/29/2009, -0/+5I have acctually been enjoying the day or so a week we have been forced to take off as of late. Really slow around here anyway, almost would rather be at home. It sucks on losing a little bit of money, but I aint afraid to admit the fact I really hate working so it don't bother me none, not affecting my living any. Oh noes I guess I will have to stay home and cook dinner instead of go out. At least its keeping my job around during these slow times.
- xXVenom77Xx, on 05/29/2009, -1/+5"Eliminating or reducing executive-level bonuses."
I lol'd at that one. - dayv2005, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3mine has gone through about 8 of them. Things still are not looking good here. I agree with V3nOM
- V3n0M, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3Ditto! I wish they would just layoff the dead-weight around here and stop skimming off of everyone else.
- GrumpyFan, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Great list. Most of these are common sense. However, most big business lack common sense when it comes to these kinds of issues. They do the knee-jerk reaction of letting go their hourly workers, which in a lot of cases happen to the be the laborers that actually get things done. So, yeah, they reduce their expenses on labor, but they also reduce their capacity. I've had this idea for a while that if a company first focused on cutting unnecessary spending like some of the things mentioned here, then do an across the company pay reduction, 25% of the President/CEO, 20% for the VPs and other high level execs, 15% for Managers and other leaders, 10% for salaried non-managerial, 5% for hourly employees. These two steps alone, could potentially be enough for some businesses to forego layoffs, at least for a little while. And, if employees were given the option of paycut vs layoff, I'm just thinking most would choose the paycut, for themselves, and to save the jobs for their co-workers.
- jmritchie, 6 hr 38 min ago, -0/+2It's always interesting to see what happens when a business starts operating like an individual with sound personal finance.
- SystemicThought, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2They forgot: Don't let people get pissed off and steal copiers to later destroy them with a baseball bat in the middle of a field.
- bytor4232fb, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Indeed. I get twice as much done from my basement office than I ever do working at the data center, on the one or two days that I absolutely have to drive in.
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2oh yeah and done leave half an office of laid off employees computers running in the middle of the summer.
sell them on ebay, they will be obsolete by the time the seats are filled.
of course most places are so screwed up with bureaucratic red tape that they would have no way to accept the money. - Raider007, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2My company has done probably 6 or 7 of those in the past 9 months...
- thcobbs, on 05/29/2009, -2/+4I haven't gotten a bonus in three years, and my company just did mandatory pay cuts. yeah, I'm SUPER happy.
- jameson5, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2My company did two extra things: Stopped matching our 401K's and stopped providing plastic utensils in the break room.
- bytor4232fb, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Yeah. After my company laid off all the dead weight and marketing people, they implemented at least half of these.
Luckily I haven't been asked to take unpaid time off yet. - failtrain, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2What the ***** am I paying you for?! Get the ***** off digg and make 1000 copies of that report I sent you, you low life scum!
GET BACK TO WORK! - balthisar, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Why the difference between hourly and what you call salaried non-managerial? They're working stiffs, too. People like admins (sometimes hourly, sometimes salary), CAD designers, engineers, you know, people who actually work, too?
- cam0man, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2we had a round of layoffs in jan, 2500 employees. couple months later they gave us 5% pay reductions, mandatory 5 days unpaid, stopped matching 401ks and the employee stock purchase program. I just went to the medicine cabinet to grab some cold medicine and it was empty - they said it was a cost cutting measure.
just pisses me off how the companies are using this recession as an excuse to take advantage of the workers. our stock is up 20% from this time last year and our earnings are solid - just sucks.
everyone says 'well it's better than the alternative' - no it's not. i wish they'd go ahead and fire some employees who making absurd salaries and doing jack *****. i shouldn't have to suffer just so the useless doldts can keep their jobs. - Hamakuas, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2#12 Reducing employee hours to the point where employees quit on their own or should anyway.
- cleric04, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Apparently you have never seen how slow the corporate world is to upgrade computers.
- inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1How about they stop being so ***** greedy and accept that the profit line is a luxury and will be ultimately reduced ina f ucking recession!!
Yes i am bitter, its because my company has reduced hours all over the country and i am scraping by to make ends meet until they see sense, all the cash i saved over the past year is going to go on what i can usually afford to pay for. - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1My company recently implemented a lot of these ideas, unfortunately it still had to lay off half the company. There is just so many things you can cut and transform into a "lean" process before you come to the realization that its not enough, especially in this down economy.
- darthfergie, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1It's kinda weird being forced to take time off when you're working like crazy though. Client thought we were nuts since they're paying us more per day to be there than the firm gets to credit when we take that liability off the table. Guess it covers the guys who are in the summer doldrums as well in different parts of the company, but it doesn't make a lot of sense when we've got so much going on we're pulling in other offices to help us out.
- chefjesus, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Okay. ;(
- mahadiga, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1And if N employees voluntarily cut off their salaries by 50% they can prevent N/2 lay offs.
- SpeedStix, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1My company has done pretty much all of the above, no lay offs yet :) I wish I could get some unpaid vacation but I am just a lowly coop :(
- Rivfader, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Well yeah I can understand the frustration for your job, but I am just one of two IT guys at my company, we are basically firemen, we are paid to be there incase of emergencies with tech stuff and keep the network running smooth. So its long days of nothing going on and business being slow and other employees not working much nothing is happening. I havn't had a computer issue in weeks. I took a non paid vacation two weeks ago to Florida.
- raza7370, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1wow.. nice pic
- Dumbledorito, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1What bonuses for employees? It's EXECUTIVE level bonuses. Which should have been cut LONG ago, especially for such well-run entities like United Airlines and just about any national bank you'd care to name.
- deansaluti, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1This list is an unfortunate result of the economy. Hopefully companies will be able to make it up to loyal employees who stay when the economy rebounds.
- linagee, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1Didn't you get the memo about those TPS reports?!?!?
- linagee, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1Bonuses are supposed to increase your pay so you can afford inflation. If inflation is 4% every year, your bonus should be at least this big or else you're screwed.
On the really fscked up side, if housing increases 20% every year (which it was doing in California for a while) then.... Yeah, no employer is going to give you a 20% per year bonus. - linagee, on 05/30/2009, -0/+1Does that mean if I get half of my coworkers fired, I get a 50% increase in pay?
- sgalbreath, on 06/01/2009, -0/+0Kudos to the companies who actively look for ways to keep a motivated and engaged workforce. They will come out ahead in brighter economic times, having saved their best assets - the people.
- mycorp, on 06/01/2009, -0/+0That's good but why Big Company still cut the employee when economy down like happens in US ?
http://millioanire-idea.blogspot.com - MrScotchBoy, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2This is a great list, I wish more companies would think along these lines...
- inactive, on 05/31/2009, -0/+0Mandatory 5 days unpaid???
They basically ask you to come in and do your job without getting a penny for the work???
I thought slavery was illegal.. - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1This article is crap. My former employer wastes thousands in machining and welding scrap, yet their only solution is to generate even more scrap. I hope they get shafted bigtime when GM goes bankrupt next week.
- bburrito, on 05/29/2009, -2/+0I guess I have been pretty lucky. My company hasnt had to do any of this yet. We still get free lunches every friday. But I do know that if we dont get a massive contract next month that layoffs will have to occur. Not because the company is broke but because there would be a ton of idle employees that would have nothing to do. Dont need trainers if nobody is paying for training. :-(
