- Toshibi, on 07/06/2009, -14/+241Here's a few from a veteran Cashier that's worked for multiple gas stations (me):
1. The Clerk is not human refuse.
You may be having a bad day but odds are the guy behind the counter has had to deal with a whole bunch of people having a bad day and isn't exactly enthused about their job. We get blamed for everything! (I was blamed for a city wide black out last week.) Also, if there's only one cashier in the store, you don't get breaks...unless there are absolutely no customers. Also, most of us aren't as stupid as the job would have you think. I was a physics major in college and do a fair bit of computer repair to make ends meet, another cashier I work with is a writer, and so on. It's just that sometimes you get stuck in a crap job.
2. The Clerk often has to pay back drive offs.
The poor guy working for just above minimum wage dealing with everyone's ***** will usually have to pay back out of pocket any shortages. See, they assume that the employees are a bunch of thieves, so when real thieves strike you have to pay it back to keep your job.
Well, i said a few, but mostly, that's it from me. Leave the clerk alone because 9 times out of 10 we're about to go postal because we work a ***** degrading job and everyone and everything is out to get us constantly. - sourc3, on 07/06/2009, -6/+190"Since then he's filled up almost exclusively with E85. The big difference he's noticed: about 15% fewer miles to the gallon. But it's a drawback he's willing to put up with.
"I'm committed to the technology," Schafer says. "With E85, it burns cleaner, so it won't pollute as much.""
But you get 15% less MPG. Lets say your Tahoe averages (with regular gas) 20mpg on the highway. Suddenly, you're getting 16.5mpg. Meaning on a 20 gallon tank, you're losing 70 miles, or roughly 3 gallons of gas. You're telling me that E85 pollutes THAT much less, that the reduction in emissions is greater than the fact that you're burning 3 gallons more of it to travel the same distance? I'm skeptical... - ricksite, on 07/06/2009, -3/+174I am glad this article didn't perpetuate the myth of buying gas in the morning when it is cooler.
- DarkShroud, on 07/06/2009, -2/+166The article was wrong. E85 has already been tested at not burning cleaner. It's also burns hotter putting more wear on your engine and it take a lot more energy to produce than straight gas. When I tried using it for a few months I noticed that it had to be priced no less than $0.50 cheaper than regular to average out.
All E85 has done is add to inflation by raising the price of corn in turn raising the prices of food for live stock and the prices of many other goods. - HurricaneDC, on 07/06/2009, -0/+156I'm always nice to the clerk, no sense in being an ***** to a guy who hasn't done anything to me.
- BradBrown, on 07/06/2009, -2/+126#11. The condoms in the vending machine are 5 years old.
- doublefelix, on 07/06/2009, -8/+120Surprisingly informative. The part about not using your debit card to buy gas will have you saying wtf.
- dgaspard, on 07/06/2009, -6/+115That is because it's not true. The bank reserves $1.00. They don't need to reserve $20, $30, or $50 for your fill up. Quite frankly, they make more money if you go over you account by 30 dollars when you repay their $32 overdraft fee.
- Barkingshins, on 07/06/2009, -1/+108I bet you're a lot of fun at parties too.
- crackrockutah, on 07/06/2009, -0/+96"You can't actually buy gas online."
...... Glad that could be cleared up. - hawksfan03, on 07/06/2009, -0/+72it didn't ask me to login
- thcobbs, on 07/06/2009, -2/+71Here's a tip. Read your card-member agreement or just ask the next time you're at a branch. Never assume what you read on the the internet from "an expert" is blanket truth.
- krets, on 07/06/2009, -0/+63So I should stop trying to shove the USB cable into my gas tank?
- ObeseSnake, on 07/06/2009, -0/+56I guess you missed seeing those inline filters at each pump too? Most decent stations have them.
- SuburbianMike, on 07/06/2009, -3/+5911. Gas companies don't use condoms when they rape you.
- Jektal, on 07/06/2009, -5/+5644oz of soda?! Good lord, I pity your belt.
- kylere, on 07/06/2009, -4/+54Snopes calls this bit of "wisdom" false. Please stop repeating bad information.
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/household/gastips.as ... - lilrabbit129, on 07/06/2009, -0/+45I think he meant that if he was going to go out of town anyway then he'll wait to fill up in the other town.
Not that he's specifically going out of town to get the cheaper gas. - ejhansen71, on 07/06/2009, -5/+46Folks - a quick tip. If you have to leave town to save $0.10 per gallon - perhaps it's time to give up driving as it's too rich for your blood. Really? On an average car of 18 gallons that gets you 450 miles - buying the "expensive" gas costs you $1.80 more total per fillup. Save the research time and the out-of-the-way driving. After all - how much is your time worth?
- buckeyefrank, on 07/06/2009, -4/+43You are right, most banks only reserve $1.00, but there are some that reserve $20 or $30.
- artofwar420, on 07/06/2009, -5/+43You Are A Jerk.
- skrit, on 07/06/2009, -1/+393. We don't set the gas prices. Our bosses do. I know, you would think the minimum wage employee would be trusted with that, but no.
4. We don't get free gas. Not even a discount. I was accused of this many times. - Rozenrot, on 07/06/2009, -5/+43On that last one, I just want to put this out there; my local gas sation only charges 1.25 for a 44oz cup of soda. That's a deal as far as I'm concerned. Good article though. Going to be using #6 a lot.
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -0/+38Didn't ask me either. You just have screwed something up.
- tonychenyj, on 07/06/2009, -10/+48I can read the article. Nice tips.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 07/06/2009, -2/+36And your bladder!
- Hellahulla, on 07/06/2009, -5/+373 particularly grates on me. The number of people I know who choose to go to the more expensive stations because of their TV adverts claiming their petrol has such and such in it to make it cleaner and faster and better for your engine. Prices are usually something like €0.009 up to €0.05 higher.
- thehuntofdear, on 07/06/2009, -0/+26I am a gas-station condom baby
- leckig, on 07/06/2009, -2/+28people are weird about gas prices - they are willing to go thru all kind of trouble just to save 10 cents. Yet the same people shop in expensive food stores such as Gian Eagle in Ohio, so they can get their "fuel perks" points.
Great logic - pay 50% more for food so you can save 10 cents on fuel, or a $1 on a fill up. - lolwatermelon, on 07/06/2009, -0/+24No, you don't. The temperature of the ground where the fuel tanks are changes very little during the day.
- LaRue05, on 07/06/2009, -17/+39I'm sorry, but the title of the article and what's in the article don't match at all. Plus it was just horribly written.
#1 and #6 are in essence the same thing.
#4 is so out in left field for this article; it's not a gas stations responsibility to tell you what your own banking fees are going to be. That's your ***** responsibility, if you don't know you get charged extra for PIN-based transactions from your own bank; it's your ***** fault.
#9 WOW, so enlightening... give me a break, as if that's even a valid point for stoping to buy gas. "Oh look my car is overheating, I think I'll stop at Chevron for gas" WTF?
#10 So now the people that aren't mechanics/car specialists (see #9) are with holding information that, gasp I might be driving an E85 vehicle. For ***** sake batman. You mean to tell me that they know more about the car that I went out and bought? Jeez and this whole time I was putting sugar in my tank because I thought it ran better.
This article was 85% *****, that is all. - Sloi, on 07/06/2009, -1/+23... and will lead to a five year old asking for things from vending machines soon enough. *snicker*
- jedicor, on 07/06/2009, -0/+19lolwatermelon basically nailed it. Consumer Reports did a study, and they concluded that a variance for a typical tank DOES exist, but it's typically less than 1-2 percent at a 20+ degree difference. It's not the time of day, it's the temperature. If it's not been boiling hot for five or six hours, you're basically not going to see any difference, and even if you are, you're talking such a minuscule one that it can be written off.
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2008/08/gas- ... - Networktwenty3, on 07/06/2009, -1/+20I am old enough to remember when gas stations would not only pump your gas but check oil, water and tires... Then it was 2 sections, one with full service, then it was only women served, now its pump your own gas *****.
- DarkShroud, on 07/06/2009, -0/+18Also many banks offer "check cards" now. Where it's a debit that you can run as a credit to avoid the merchant fee that debit cards are usually charged.
- theexitwound, on 07/06/2009, -2/+20Yes, read the manual. If your car says "use 91 or higher octane", do it. If it says 87 octane is fine, putting 93 in won't do anything for you AT ALL.
- andreo, on 07/06/2009, -1/+18Yet they are still fresher then the burritos in the back of the freezer.
Once I stopped at a gas station to pick up a burrito on my way back to work. I microwave it when I get back to my building, sit at my desk. take a bite. And then notice that the other end is green from mold. I take it back and the guy wanted to know if I wanted to choose another. I told him that I will only taunt death once a day and opted for the refund instead. - jaimevejar, on 07/06/2009, -2/+19seriously?
- scubaninja, on 07/06/2009, -0/+17I take a lot of pride in my stereo, so why would I want to use anything but Monster cables to connect all the components?
- angryhobo, on 07/06/2009, -1/+18Yeah QT has 49 cent fountain drinks and 69 cent frozen. But we do gouge prices like a ***** on most everything else (I work there).
- Edgers, on 07/06/2009, -4/+20Wow, bitter.
- RudeTurnip, on 07/06/2009, -1/+17This. When I worked for a bank circa 1997-1998, it was always a $1 hold for gas stations. The funny thing is that the only customers who would find out about those $1 holds are the customers that would go into overdraft because the gas stations temporarily charged a dollar. Although overdraft fees are easy profits for a bank, they're really a silent signal to the customer that they should go away.
- Toshibi, on 07/06/2009, -0/+15Yeah, I hate it when people ask for "my discount". I just laugh...we don't get one.
- yibbutkeen, on 07/06/2009, -1/+16"You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those that can do nothing for him"
Goethe - brim4brim, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14Wow what a jackass.
Costs nothing to be polite, make eye contact, say hello and thanks etc...
Hell I don't deal with people much in my job but if I'm in a shop you can be damn straight I'll have respect for the other person. I'm guessing your not this ignorant in real life though. Probably don't have the balls and just trolling online. - palmer, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14This had me saying WTF:
"Many banks charge their customers 50 cents to $1 for the privilege of using their debit card in any PIN-based transaction."
If you're being ripped off like this, GET A NEW BANK PRONTO. I have yet to be subjected to this crap. DO NOT tolerate this, or we'll all be screwed. - klitzbtc, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14The Informer Strikes Again!
- kebwi, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14Oh come on. "Email" and even "blog" are in the OED now. It's just a matter of time for "login". Language adapts to the current culture. This is a bad thing how?
- ElAmo, on 07/06/2009, -0/+14who takes back a $1 burrito... was it really worth your time and gas money?
- Seandizz, on 07/06/2009, -0/+13If you value your life.
