- Turnar, on 10/25/2007, -0/+42I buy used underwear off eBay. I think it's saved me a few hundred dollars.
- McLumpy, on 10/25/2007, -3/+44Reason #1
So you won't be forced to work until you're 75. - strum40, on 10/29/2007, -1/+36I love my library for getting free books.
- deknmike, on 10/25/2007, -2/+29Move to the country, where you can raise your own chickens and goats, and grow a garden. That'll also keep you out of the trendy night clubs and overpriced coffee joints.
- underdog138, on 10/25/2007, -2/+29I do about 70% of these. One in particular I know I do not do is buy clothes from Wal-Mart, as #5 suggests. It is possible to be both vain and frugal. Brand name outlet stores sell the same clothes as regular stores you would find at a mall, except they are usually a lot cheaper because the merchandise is either out of season, or "last years" line (as if anyone would be able to tell), or there is a small defect from the manufacturer that did not pass quality control. On that note, you can often find a ton of cool stuff at thrift stores.
- fatejudger, on 10/28/2007, -5/+30So, basically, all I have to do is drive a ***** Geo Metro, dress like a redneck, and eat PB&Js for lunch for the next 30+ years. Thanks, but no thanks.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/25/2007, -1/+19i'm just lazy
too lazy to go to the grocery store = no junk food or fast food
too lazy to go anywhere but work and home = save on gas
too lazy to go to the mall = buy stuff on internet for cheaper
yea, i just kinda sit around and play games and crap. and my savings just keep increasing. plus i get to do stuff that really makes me happy... nothing! - mediaspree, on 10/24/2007, -0/+15And with some cards get 5% cash back. I buy EVERYTHING (which isn't much beyond gas, food etc.) with my 5% cash back credit card and just pay it off at the end of the month.
- heartcoldfusion, on 10/25/2007, -3/+16I think not having a credit card is foolish. Better advice would be: pay your credit card bills before they're due so you can build credit and not go into debt.
- AtomBoyz, on 10/29/2007, -7/+20I love Amazon.com for buying used books.
- heartcoldfusion, on 10/29/2007, -1/+14Reasons why you should live beneath your means:
1. http://digg.com/offbeat_news/The_Mom_W_135_000_In_ ...
2. See first item. - Hazardc, on 10/25/2007, -1/+13These are the people that end up killing over early, leaving their millions of saved up dollars they never spent to an old lady who will doll it all off at a bingo hall
i am quite frugal and live beneath my means, but man these people take it to extremes, you have to splurge sometimes and enjoy your ***** life. living for the moment is just as important as putting away money.
and call me vain, but im not wearing wal mart *****. i like getting laid. - esquimaux, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12...a little humility goes a long way...
- HyperDav, on 10/25/2007, -0/+11I like how the first 4 or 5 deal with spending money on food. I personally didnt know where all my money was going, then I realized it was on FOOD! But when you find yourself eating out for lunch every day at work, and you live alone so you tend to buy prepared foods, the cost of food skyrockets to a point you wouldn't believe (plus its not good for your health)
- ArmyOfFun, on 10/25/2007, -0/+11Going commando is even cheaper.
- sethisastud, on 10/24/2007, -0/+10Yes, definitely.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -0/+9I take it borrowing 100k and letting is all ride on black in Vegas is not on the list?
- f0rr3st, on 10/25/2007, -1/+10because the only gauge of happiness is material possessions. Oh man, that statement was so retarded I just pissed a little blood.
- Ashra, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8I think the point of not being duped by advertisers is a valid one. It forced a minute of introspection into my workday, analyzing why I buy certain brand name items, while buying the store brand for other things. Good article, dugg.
- mediaspree, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8Thanks for taking it off my hands.
- f0rr3st, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8If you're saving money, you technically already are.
- scoot2006, on 10/25/2007, -1/+9Agreed. I think the most I've paid for name brand jeans is 12 bucks.
- rugby4ward, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7#7 - don't even buy used books. Go to the library they are free.
- DontGiveADamn, on 10/25/2007, -1/+811. Don't buy newspapers, magazines and books. Everything you need to know is here on digg for free.
- sofaKing812, on 10/30/2007, -0/+7"#5- Don't buy clothes or shoes with designer labels."
I agree with this to a point, but these clothes typically fit much better and last longer. Also, you can hit some clearance sales or stores like Nordstrom Rack (I think that is the right name) and find some good quality stuff on the cheap. I noticed this is especially the case with "dress" or "work" clothes. - DiggRyan24, on 10/24/2007, -5/+12God I wish I could do half of these... but its so hard to not buy Heinz ketchup and real Coca-cola... it just tastes so much better!!!
btw, great list for ListAfterList.... - 1773nium, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6Get a girlfriend, all they really are is glorified hookers. You're still paying for it no matter what. The only downside is that you cant drop your girlfriend off at the same corner you found her ass.
- typicalusername, on 10/30/2007, -3/+9This fails to address my most taxing money problem...Hookers. How can I save money on Hookers? Do I pick them up on side streets rather than downtown? I like high quality hookers though? Does Walmart have hookers? It's rather perplexing...
- ottodv, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7The most important tips are missing:
1. Don't live in a bigger house/apartment than you really need. Two advantages: lower rent or interest payments and less space means you are more careful when buying stuff.
2. Never buy a new car. (In the extreme you could buy a cheap old car, drive it till it's dead, then buy another cheap old car.)
3. Don't buy stuff you don't really need.
4. Rent stuff if you only need it once or twice.
5. Don't start a family too early (if you still have this choice).
6. Be wise with investments (don't just put it in the bank, but make it work for you).
Brown bagging lunch and the other stuff are just marginal in this game, same for coupons, I never bothered with those, since it costs time and effort. The big bucks are saved on the house and the car and simply not wasting it on stuff you don't really need. - 0crabby0, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7It worked for me - except the car was a honda crx, my company gave me a clothing allowance, and I gardened.
Paid my off my mortgage early. - vsaint, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6That rule applies to investing, not buying cheap things.
- f0rr3st, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5How about this? The average rate of savings in the US is -15%. We live in debt. If you have any debt you're a moron not to live beneath your means. Here's a link from the front page from today talking about some dumb bitch that spent her family into a hole:
http://consumerist.com/consumer/consumers-gone-wil ... - saleem, on 10/25/2007, -2/+7Now I'm confused. I *can* taste the difference of brand name and generic soda.... but can you really taste the difference in ketchup? lol
- stupidbrowner, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6Heinz ketchup is the one thing where I definitely have to buy the brand name version!!
- nicko68, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Unfortunately when you're fat, you get gouged for clothes. Reason #5404 to lose more weight. :)
- 1773nium, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6I cant believe you just told diggers to try doing without cable, cell phones, and internet. You are insane.
- 0crabby0, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Yep, because you are too tired from tending your garden...lol
- MicrosoftBob, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6I refuse to cut corners when it comes to Diet Coke...early retirement be damned.
- sunkist22, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Actually, all these tips are very very good. We try to do this as much as we can. Especially with avoiding prepared foods. Not only do you save money, but you eat healthier too... and we love to cook anyway, so we prefer to buy basic ingredients and make our own food. You'd be surprised how many people out there can barely cut an onion in half...
- gr4yscale, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4This is true for most people, especially people in Sales or people with their own businesses, but not everyone.
- gudnbluts, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Won't upgrade the wife 'til she doubles in size. Hey - it works for everything!
- ucg1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4It's all the same high fructose corn syrup to me.
- sethisastud, on 10/24/2007, -4/+8I agree with you on not buying clothes at Wal-Mart, but there are better ways of buying items than going to most outlets.
You claim that outlets sell the same clothes as regular stores, but that's simply not true. The Gap brands (BR, Gap, and Old Navy) as well as several other stores have different quality items in the outlet and retail stores. I have no idea why there even is an old navy outlet as the quality in the retail store is utter crap anyway. The outlets may carry out of season items or closeouts, but you can tell the difference by the tags generally. Look for the 3 diamonds. The items are of lower quality. (I'm gay, I know these things)
As for the $12 jeans, what name brands are you buying?? I've seen very few jeans for less than $20 even in stores like Marshals. - f0rr3st, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5Never underestimate the power of stupidity.
- 31073, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Buy used and dont finance/put on CCs is probably the best advise.
- jwietelmann, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4Not only do I disagree with your choice, I disagree with #9 (Severely restrict your credit card spending) in general. Allow me to add:
#11. Open a high-yield money market savings account (~5% interest and FDIC insured). Put as many of your purchases on a credit card as you can. Have the discipline to pay the entire balance every month. This way you get to earn substantial interest on your money for up to a month after you've already effectively spent it. - MicrosoftBob, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4While I agree with your comment, wild horses on meth couldn't drag me into trendy night clubs or overpriced coffee joints.
Speaking of joints.... - reknaps, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4Wait until you read "10 ways to ruin your credit score" - that will surely be on there.
- haterrade, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3i really don't think those are that bad...5$ entrees from Trader Joe's compared to spending 20$ at a restaurant?
