Thinking you can draw, sing, write poetry and act, because you took a class; when you have absolutely no talent.
Discovering bands that are cool because somebody told you they were cool.
Insane debt for useless education. - torressr3, on 01/09/2009, -0/+32Buried for no Google in the list. And it should be the top one.
- nLoBushwack, on 01/07/2009, -0/+17Jamba Juice was another.

- Angostura, on 01/09/2009, -0/+15Err, what about Sun Microsystems (originally stood for Stanford University Network) Cisco spun out from the same project.
Then there was some bloke who wrote a graphical browser called Mosaic while in college. I guess that was pretty important too. - internetcoward, on 01/09/2009, -1/+15what college did you go to....
- perryc, on 01/07/2009, -2/+1511. YouTube (Steve Chen/Chad Hurley/Jawed Karim). Last one dropped in early stages.
- SneakyNinja, on 01/09/2009, -1/+14I think the author of this article could have spent some more time doing some research. I'm not sure that Tripod, Insomnia Cookies, or Collegeboxes are fit to be in a list like Microsoft, FedEx, and Dell. Just my opinion though.
- skinny01, on 01/09/2009, -0/+13They skipped part with HOW the fedex guy just rounded up the 80 mil. to get going. I think that's the thing that's holding a lot of people back. I'm sure plenty of people have good ideas that would make good companies but how to raise enough money to get it going is the issue. If you had the skills to just scrape up 80 mil any time you needed it, you'd have no problem doing just about anything business wise.
- dystra, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12so, an ivy league school seems to be a prerequisite for most of these guys...even if they dont finish

Mary: I beg your pardon?
Lloyd: That's what we're gonna call it. I got worms! We're gonna specialize in selling worm farms. You know, like ant farms. - tgc1, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7Filler Material.
- taxali, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7Microsoft's begginings really didin't have anything to do with college.
- JoeCool1986, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5that's what she said.
- bouldercrunch, on 01/09/2009, -2/+7buried for linkbaiting/SMM. This is an incestuous attempt by someone at "the U" to get traffic/links and guess what?, you morons actually dugg it to the front page. I mean come on, they listed their own website as one of the "10 big Ideas"...In the same category as facebook, fedex and microsoft? Why didn't they mention Google? Which was started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin as a PHD dissertation at Stanford...Google was like, the ultimate "big Idea" developed by a college student.
- slayerab, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5Poorer kids have to worry about making it on their own and having a job to start a family and such. Kids with rich families (or at least well to do families) have something to fall back on, so they can take more risks in college, like dropping out and starting a business.
- lovek, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4I don't know what that is, but I like where your head's at.

- Frecklefoot, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4Call me naive, but WTF is Number 9? Collecting plastic bottles and selling them for cash? It could really use some sort of caption. At least the others had the company name somewhere in them.
- banderwocky, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4Didn't Girls gone wild start in a college?
- elmetald00d, on 01/09/2009, -6/+9Flippy Cup? What are you a ***** retard?

- Loudtyper, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Well, sure a rich buddy or family member helps..but its the drive that pushes em forward. I could care less when I was 19 or 20, if I started a new site - cool, but it was just for my instant gratification. My buddies who took classes online ( http://www.classesonlineusa.com/online-schools/ ) - one of those schools - and he started his first business young, because he wasnt tempted to screw around all the time!
- kingemilyc, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2A good idea is a good idea, and even if it hasn't resulted in the revenue and recognition of Microsoft, FedEx, Dell, it is inspiring to see these college students have acted upon their ideas. Certainly more than most people accomplish in their lifetime.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2this list doesn't include bsd. buried.
- joeleslie, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3Google?
- AriaStar, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Considering Google damned near owns the internet, I'm absolutely shocked that it's not here. Nor is Apple.
- cam0man, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2I think I heard about that business before. This guy recycles old soda bottles for use with his plant fertilizer. So his products are packaged in cleaned out coke bottles, etc. Cuts out the middle steps of the recycle process.
- kgdoom, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3Facebook, Microsoft, Dell, Napster and.... theU?
- dystra, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2true. plus alot most of their investors are probably rich family members and friends.
- SneakyNinja, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Right but I'm sure if a bit more time was spent, he'd find much bigger ideas from people while they were in college. I mean cookies and movers? pfft
- o0Taggart0o, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Don't forget Neopets was created in college! Quite a large business they've made.
