- diafel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Completely worthless article without pics.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I hate news articles without photo or illustration. It's SOOOO annoying
- fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18correct. my thought: "where is the ***** picture"
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Yep. There should be a Bury Story option called "No Pics!"
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16nothing beats Paul Allens, 2 heli-pads, a mini-sub attached, and a seal team onboard... though i heard it costs him like $20mill a year just to maintain everything crew haha.. got to see it once when he had it docked in the Northwest a few years back
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14you'd think that if you had enough money to build a $100 million boat, you'd have enough to pay for a decent website
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13especially when the headlines says "sails into view"
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Don't ever post something llike that without pics.
- kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Pics and more info:
http://www.symaltesefalcon.com/ - jbenson2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13NO DIGG. All text with no photos - dumb, dumb, dumb.
Thanks to the diggers (diggees?) who supplied the links to the photos. - bradym80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For a silicon valley VC with a $100m yacht, that is a pretty crappy website.
- bigkm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7not the most aesthetically pleasing yacht i've seen
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7it looks so ugly that it might as well be a boat some cuban refugee puts together from parts scavenged from a junk yard to try to make it to America. and then the coast guard would let him land in Florida out of sympathy for someone sailing such a sad looking boat.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well apparently they blew the entire budget on the boat, and didn't have at least $1000 to put to the site.
- sickaltima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5a few links of interest

http://www.symaltesefalcon.com/index.htm - poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that was my first thought too, but remember that the $100 million went to WORKERS who did everything from carve teh wood to research the computerization to rent out the dockspace. They in turn spent that money at supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations... ~and the circle of life continues.~
- dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i agreed... but after reading about how much design went into those sails, i think i can appreciate the fact that it's more functional then aesthetically pleasing. that's a huge boat, and it appears to be able to sail very well and very easy - that's an improvement in technology worth of digg's respect.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Jealous much?
I bet that the owner of this boat, gives more money to Charity in 1 year than you will make in 10. Quit bitching about where other people spend their money... THEY made it, it's THEIRS to spend, NOT yours. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's none of your business what people spend their money on. You aren't spending all your disposable income on the poor or you wopuldn't have that computer and an internet connection.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Without the masts, i think its a pretty cool looking boat, With however is another story.
- cmplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sometimes ya gotta Digg a little deeper.
http://www.technologyreview.com/player/06/07/falcon/1.aspx - sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well he just dropped $100 mil, perhaps trying to save a few bucks on a website! LOL
- vandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i bet it wouldn't cost nearly as much to build a second yacht like that one. if only i could pay for it...
- Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're kidding, right? Speed isn't exactly the reason for building the boat. And 18 to 20 knots for a square-rigged ship is pretty damned fast - upwind. It's on a par for a sloop of that size. Downwind, of course, she'll go faster.
A cat will go fast and be pretty damned uncomfortable. Given the choice between a 35' cat and a 290' square rigger, I think that, all things being equal, I'd pick the square rigged boat. Besides, the law of gross tonnage says that your cat will be headed to the bottom of the ocean in a race! - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks perfect for some pirate raiding...uh, I mean, privateering.
- LFTravel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a waste of money. I've worked on these boats, and they are a sad waste.
- LukeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw it when they had only stepped one mast, and it looked awesome. With all three, it kind of looks like electricity pylons.... But I wouldn't say it was ugly (except for those sunset photos on their website which look kind of ass...).
Its a great update on and homage to the old square riggers. Whether you think its ugly or not, you have to agree it has a lot of class. - packeteer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes its effing ugly, but the tech is awesome
i want a wing sail on my boat! - matthewecornish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a baby next to Octopus http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/paulallen.htm ($200millions)
Still impressive though - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Paul Allen WAS #1 for a while. Some other tycoon had one built that cost even more, above $200 million. Can't recall who at the moment.
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's...well, it's ugly to be honest. With the sails down it's atrocious. If you're going to make it a masted vessel, at least think about what it will look like when the sails are down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not a good digg, but even the real info is ugly, its just not the prettiest boat, plus there's much more expensive ones, Paul Allen's is around $200 million, and he's not #1
- danr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Watch out for pirates!
- catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0point taken... I guess its personal preference. I'd rather not be on a boat so big it feels like its land, and I'd like it to burn waves silently.
"Downwind, of course, she'll go faster."
hmm... lots of disagreement about which way is faster! I realize that common sense says that sailing directly away from the wind is faster, but in sailing away from the wind, you can only go as fast as the wind. In my experience, you can pump a few to a dozen more knots faster than the wind in a close haul, that is, sailing into the wind, but at @ 45 degrees. I really think its much faster. The second fastest would be sailing at @ 45 degrees away from the wind.

"A cat will go fast and be pretty damned uncomfortable. "
Man... what kind of cat's have you been on?? A 35 foot cat is big enough for 4 staterooms, and one really really big room stratling the hulls... it can be as posh as you want. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice add-on for the story, it sucks when some one submits something like this and there are no pictures!
So here are a couple more links with some pictures and stats.

http://www.freivokh.com/page/clipp - roquetin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3 (sarc)Why don't we all repeatedly post bitchy comments about how there are no pictures, since after all, this is a story in the Business & Finance category(/sarc)
Anybody wanna see an age limit for Digg? - catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0bah... for that money, you could have 100 really really nice 35' wooden catamarans ... a veritable navy... and they could smoke that thing. OK, its pretty neato... but... whats its top speed? 18-20 knots in a really really stiff, 30 knot wind? A cat can do 30 knots easy in just a 20 knot wind.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1this is pretty rediculous that people are rich enough to spend money on this crap.. sure it is insanely nice and beautiful... but.. honestly.. $100 mil could go a LONG ways into making thousands and thousands of poverty stricken peoples lives better....
just a thought...

What is Digg?
