I think that cities either fully paying for or heavily subsidizing new stadiums/arenas is a form of corporate welfare, but on the other hand I think that pro sports team fall under the category of "culture" and open up communities to greater business investment and national recognition.
This sort of thing never happens with soccer/football teams, except for the whole Wimbledon AFC/MK Dons fiasco.
