- allothersnsused, on 10/30/2008, -3/+55There won't be another Jordan. Or another John Elway. Or another Wayne Gretzky. Each player is unique and brings their own styles and abilities. I don't know why we consistently compare them to others instead of recognizing the new and exciting things they each bring to the game.
- thegamingguy, on 10/31/2008, -4/+33There is nobody close to MJ yet. Kobe, I hate to admit, is probably the closest so far based on his winning, defense, build, dunking, and ability to take over a game.
- MakiMaki, on 10/31/2008, -1/+17They left out Penny Hardaway. He had a ton of potential... too bad he was injured during his prime. He was definitely one of the most Jordanesque players in the 90s. Harold Miner and Isiah Rider can't compare with his skills. Lebron has said that Penny was one of his favorite players.
- freakk123, on 10/31/2008, -1/+14There's never gonna be another Jordan, but LeBron and Kobe both have an ability to completely transform and own a game of basketball. Watching the Cavs play the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals last year crystallized that fact - they almost won despite being overmatched absolutely, with the exception of LeBron. And LeBron is still young, and his numbers are absurd. If he had a decent team, I think he could be as dominant as MJ was.
- TheGreatBelow, on 10/31/2008, -2/+12Montana > Elway
- djlaptop, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11They don't mean "next Jordan" in terms of playing style; they mean in terms of what that player will mean to the game. Jordan essentially was the most marketable athlete in the world during his reign; will another NBA player ever be like that? I doubt it, but a guy like LeBron could in a larger market.
What intrigues me is the potential of foreign athletes like Yao Ming, who have a huge dual fan base (US and China). They could revolutionize the game (from a marketing perspective) in a whole new way. - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -1/+10Nah, that's Carmelo Anthony. Kobe actually plays with a lot of heart and developed into a pretty good pro-athlete in the recent year.
- sonar1, on 10/31/2008, -3/+11Kobe is on his way to getting more nba titles than jordan. but theres too many great players (compared to when jordan was playing) for kobe to surpass him in mvp trophies
- nathanbutnet, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6I am not sure folks are getting the point of the list: they are not saying that these players are close to MJ (in fact very much the opposite in some cases like Miner) but that they were, at one time, anointed the next MJ.
- ahoy, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5theres a hell of a lot more people more recognizable than babe ruth
- illogik, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5That was the first person I thought of that wasn't on the list. He had the tightest commercials w/ Lil' Penny!
- arichard, on 10/31/2008, -1/+6God I hate slideshows
- ferchu90210, on 10/31/2008, -2/+7mmmmmm.....the most recognized athlete of all times is probably Mohamed Ali or Pele... Jordan a close 3 or 4 th place!
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -1/+6Vince Carter is a bitch.
Sincerely,
Angry Toronto Fan - NecroSexy, on 10/31/2008, -1/+5MJ is the Sun; Kobe is Alpha Centauri. He's the closest star but by a vast margin.
- LaGStAr, on 11/01/2008, -0/+4I'm guessing you're way too cool to use the reply feature.
- limpfalife, on 10/31/2008, -3/+7Kobe is the closest thing to Jordan in the Nba period. Lebron James needs to work on his jumpshot and also be clutch before he is ever compared to Jordan. Plus Lebron plays a whole different position then Jordan. Whoever says that Kobe isnt the closest thing to Jordan is just an ignorant Lebron fanboy or just hates Kobe period and doesnt even regard his game.
- redscofield, on 10/31/2008, -8/+12Kobe Bryant isn't Jordan, but in terms of impact on the game, I think they're equal...
- BebopBlues, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3yep Penny should be 4th on the list behind Kobe, Lebron, and Wade. He was THAT good before the injury.
- wally40, on 10/31/2008, -2/+5JR Rider? Are you kidding me!?!
The reason all of these will never be the next "Michael Jordan" is because they each have their own style of play. They are who they are! - bainfu, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3Hey yo Tyra! You left your toothbrush at my house!
- firebirdx01, on 10/31/2008, -5/+8Buried for inaccurate- there's a huge gap between Jordan and the players on this list.
- jimmies, on 11/01/2008, -0/+3Jordan NEVER bitched out at the end of a game. Especially playoff games.
Kobe has. He has no killer instinct. Prime vs. Prime Jordan eats him alive. - Tichondrius74, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4Are you sure you know who Jordan is? Did you watch Jordan play?
- slyphin, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4i agree, kobe doesn't even come close. watching jordan play basketball was like the most amazing 48 minutes of your life. after he left basketball i cant stand the sport now
- nathanbutnet, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4Probably should have had Penny on there as he was also heavily hyped as the next Jordan. More so than Rider methinks.
- JulioHJ, on 10/31/2008, -1/+3He totally forgot about Mikael Pietrus aka "French Michael Jordan." I live abroad in Marseille for two years (during which time I successfully opened 5 Quizno's franchises and only three failed - which set a franchise record) and people would flock to games to see this "man who could fly across the Parisan air." Everyone was sure he'd go pretty sure but has never really caught on and isn't talked about too much in France anymore.
- AYHJA, on 10/31/2008, -6/+8Mike will be the one they remember for all times, sure...But when its all said and done, Kobe is the best...The NBA has gone global, the rules have changed...Back in MJ's day, there were no zone D's...There was no palming called...Nobody who knows anything about basketball can deny that Kobe has a complete skill set unlike any player now or before...Ask Phil what he thinks...He'll tell you...
But back on subject...I'll just say I lost a ton of money buying basketball cards as a kid waiting for these busts to develop...Bastards... - UNCKID, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2yeah you are the only one who thinks that a man that gave up a 24 point lead in the NBA Finals is better that Jordan. Kobe and Lebron are good but like jimmies said Jordan in his prime one on one with Kobe. Kobe would never touch the ball
- DemiRonin, on 10/31/2008, -5/+7Who made this ridiculous list. Kobe, Iverson, LeBron, those are all players in their own light. And how is Stackhouse anywhere close to MJ?
- slyphin, on 10/31/2008, -4/+6not even remotely close, MJ is the most recognizable athlete of all time world wide, even more than babe ruth. bryant doesn't touch that by a long shot
- molamann, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2I don't know why you're getting dugg down but I completely agree with you. Something about diggers unanimously hating Kobe for his negative PR.
- alacarde, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately you, and most of the world, never saw Len Bias play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvyHXqJIxTw#t=3m20s
Bias handed Michael Jordan and the Tarheels their first loss ever in the Dean Dome. - redscofield, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2The main problem with your response to my comment is that it has absolutely no bearing on my initial comment regarding Kobe's IMPACT on the GAME being EQUAL MJ's.
- nathanbutnet, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2'I don't know why we consistently compare them to others instead of recognizing the new and exciting things they each bring to the game.'
Buried because these two things are not mutually exclusive. It is fun to do both. - inefekt, on 11/01/2008, -0/+2Haha my god you're dumb. The rules have changed in FAVOR of the offensive player! Defenders could do so much more against the offensive player in Jordan's era, they could hand check, they could make contact with the forearm, they could dislodge or displace a player who has legally obtained a position in the post, they could impede screeners etc etc etc These are all rule changes made POST Jordan and make it so much easier for offensive players. Fans want to see offense, they want to see players score, why do you think these rules were made? Jordan scored DESPITE the lack of these rules, to the tune of 11 scoring titles and 30ppg at 50%. Kobe has 25ppg at 45% with 2 scoring titles and you could argue that his career is now on the downswing, it aint gonna get any better for him from here.
Silly you huh? - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -2/+4Your attitude just made all of your opinions worthless.
- str1fe, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2That happens on hockey a lot too. A lot of the top players are from Russia and Europe. Datsyuk, Zetterburg, Kovalchuk, Heatley, Hossa, Ovechkin (especially Ovechkin), Alfredsson, the list goes on and on.
- cmjM67, on 10/31/2008, -1/+3nobody comes close, really
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWvxijHNWB4
enjoy yourselves - chetosbourne, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Dugg for "Air France". They really called him the "French Michael Jordan"? We had high expectations here in the Bay for him. Decent player, hope he does well in Orlando.
- Racer20, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1Michael Jordan transcended the game of basketball. Kobe and LeBron are great players, and comparing their skill to MJ's is irrelavent since it's a different game now, but in the end, they are still "just" great basketball players. Some champions are more than just the sum of their stats or championships. Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher are examples of this.
- Racer20, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1The problem is, marketing hype is rampant these days. These days, everything is OVER hyped and marketed. We've become immune to the hype, and it's easy to ignore these highschool kids who are billed as "the next Michael Jordan." That immediately places unrealistic expectations on their shoulders in the mind of the general public . . . if they don't come out and win a couple championships right away, people are disappointed.
Let's not forget that once Mike came into his own and started winning in 1991, he pretty much owned the whole league until he decided to stop. That's not the case anymore. The simple fact that Lebron and Kobe co-exist right now will prevent either one of them from achieving the same legendary status as MJ.
MJ WAS the bulls in the 1990's. And while you might say the same about LeBron and the cav's, they have yet to acheive anything great, and we've already mentioned some of James' weaknesses. - indythought024, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1The NBA's glory days for me will always be in the 90's. I really don't think another player can have an impact on the game like Jordan. Guys like him Pippin, Alonzo Morning, Ewing, Stockton, Malone, Hakeem....in my eyes are the best of the best and will remain the best.
- ThaDRD, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1He also had some of the hottest signature shoes Nike has ever produced. Nike has been re-releasing them over the past couple of years.
- NuttyVirus, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1So who are the closest players to MJ? Sorry i was side tracked by all the fine women on the site.
- snugget, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1Thanks for that link, one of the best youtube compilations I've seen, and doesn't have chest-thumping rap lyrics like most of them, I like the smooth flow of the music.
- rjhomuth, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Christ, it sucks living in Kansas.
- pennvneff, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Harold Miner never got a fair shot under either Loughery or Gentry.
- daze23, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1yeah I remember a lot of talk about penny being the "next jordan" back in the day
- inefekt, on 11/01/2008, -0/+1Jordan was a shooting guard. LeBron is a small forward.
So yeah, completely wrong. -
