- weddle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23And who says they don't play defense in the NBA.....
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Someone tell this Digg noob how to ignore the sports section.
- optimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15318 points totalled. The third-most points ever scored in an NBA game. The NBA record for points in a game was set on Dec. 3, 1983 when the Pistons beat the Nuggets, 186-184.
- finezapa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17never enough sports topics that make it to the popular page.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20"I LOVE how the best player in the NBA is a short dorky canadian white boy!"
i think many people will disagree with you - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The 90's are over. There is some GREAT new talent now.
- leadx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You're joking right?
Nash does way more than Kobe ever will to make his team better. You're argument that Nash fills up a stats sheet is out to lunch. He plays a balanced game and makes players around him look that much better. Kobe lowers the standard of play of others and thats why he has no "help." Stoudemire and Marion were made stars because of Nash.
Meanwhile Kobe has an 80+ point game last year, confirming his individual play! - optimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12He is good, but the Suns have plenty of talent. When effectively, Nash only scored 1/4 of their points. Still pretty wild numbers across the box.
- jrob48, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11yeah, Nash has turned players like Raja Bell and Boris Diaw from bench warmers to stars. And leadx is right, Stoudemire and Marion wouldn't be what they are without Nash. Also Stoudemire didn't play at all last year and they played just fine, so that shows he doesn't matter to them winning.
- Ubermensch423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9the bulls have even overcome the jordan vacuum, not to mention the nba, u should too
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8they weren't playing the lakers, get over the nash vs kobe argument. Kobe is an assassin, Nash is a visionary. Different styles of play, both deadly and great players...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Let's not forget about the number of assists thrown around - Kidd, 14, Diaw, 14, Nash, 13... and then some.
Not only have they made passing cool again, they make everything and everyone look good while they're at it.
The game is more fun than ever! - Azlen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Let's not forget that Nash has won the MVP two years in a row and so far this season his numbers are even better.
- optimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Makes you wonder about that synthetic basketball. It sure hasn't hindered scoring directly.
- Chizz44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ RuffRidr
I feel that notion that The Suns play no D. However, there are Defensive Awards, separate from the overall awards. The NBA has been making a shift, emphasizing scoring and making it easier for people to do so for years. When we're talking about MVP, I think that a lot of what goes into determining who is in contention for the award depends on the climate of the league at the time.
Nash has made the Suns into a high profile team, essentially taking what he had already started with the Mavericks to another level. D'Antoni is an offensive-minded coach, like good old Doug Moe used to be. Besides the fact that Nash CLEARLY is one of the best point guards of all time, he is the engine that makes one of the best teams in the NBA go. Without him, they are nothing. Without him, the Mavericks had to realize that they couldn't run and gun anymore, and actually rededicated themselves to playing defense. The Mavericks were pretty good playing the uptempo game with Nash running it, tried it for a year with him gone, saw what they were missing and scrapped it for lockdown D (West Coast style, anyway).
Steve Nash is a ballplayers ballplayer and he was a deserving MVP both times he won. - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6actually scoring more points than the other team wins championships. Its just much more rare to have a team that can outscore someone else despite how many points the other team scores. The Suns are that good on offense
besides there is no stat anywhere that proves the catch phrase "defense wins championships"
This could very well be the Suns year barring any major injuries :D - stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Meanwhile Kobe has an 80+ point game last year, confirming his individual play!"
You forget that the lakers were down by ~30 points before he started scoring all those points. He was the only one on the lakers that could score that night. If someone was that on fire....you'd be stupid to not give them the ball. He singlehandedly got them into the playoffs. - sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Umm...Nash is not even close to being as good as Kobe. More valuable to a team but talent vs. talent, Kobe is easily the better basketball player. Oh and this is coming from a big Suns fan and former Suns ballboy. :-)
btw...as much as I love him, Nash isn't even the best player on his team. A 100% healthy Amare Stoudemire is the best Suns player. One could even argue he's the best player in the league when at %100. Don't believe me, go watch the 2004-2005 playoffs (last time he was %100)! You've never seen such ferociousness!!!!!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I know that Nash helped turn the Suns around but that came with the help of Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Marion, etc."
Then explain Stephon Marbury. He had both players, but they were nowhere near as productive as they are now with nash feeding them the ball; the suns were a mediocre team at best with Starbury "leading" them.
Nash brought better leadership and decision making, and he focused on the team first philosophy (which Marbury didn't do), that's what really changed everything for the suns. - Chizz44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nash's career high is 48 points. He hit that in a playoff game against the Mavs in 2005.
- Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Repping the home town. Go Suns! =]
- badave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Suns would still be a winning team...
- leadx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well said @Chizz44
- Chizz44, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I call Steve Nash the MVP because he is the mark of consistency. He slaughters the competition from the most difficult position to play (point guard) night in and night out. His focus is on winning and bringing the best out of the people around him, every freaking game. In the playoffs, he only gets better, because his game is patterned around making things EASIER for his teammates, which in turn allows them to play loose and breezy. Nash will always get you the ball in your favorite position or spot to shoot from, and if the clock is running down, he won't kick it to you to take the last second heave; he'll take it himself and drain it. He does all this being undersized, fast but not the fastest and looking like he couldn't touch the rim if he jumped off both feet.
Kobe doesn't hold a candle to him. - leadx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"How many championships has Nash led the Suns to?"
How many has Kobe, without Shaq lead the Lakers to? - earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2thats the difference between mediocre teams and great teams, finding ways to win when its close.
cant say the suns didnt deserve it. 17 3-pointers i think. 10 steals, 5 blks. they played a great game. Hats off to the Nets though - BobbySmithy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The crazy thing is how good Steve Nash is at shooting. He loves getting the assists but when he wants to take the chance, he almost always makes 3's looke effortless. I remember him in the playoffs last year just looking like he was wildly tossing the ball up and it would go in.
Please note: Let's not talk about D. Wade and his whack referee funded style of play. - stevesearer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"He singlehandedly got them into the playoffs."
I'll follow myself up by stating that that was last season and he needed to hit those numbers to win. This season, the attack and scoring is much more balanced. The lakers should easily make the playoffs again. - turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i don't know about calling Amare the best player in the game today, but i see your line of thinking.
during 04-05 playoffs he was an absolute beast and he did it against Tim Duncan, who got completely owned. - ChickenCow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8That is most certainly Lebron James, The King.
- Emilio8605, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second that. This was his career regular season high in points.
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey JackyTreehorn, aside from the fact that you don't know how how long an NBA game is, they had 133 points at the end of regulation. That's not an average score in the NBA these days.
- sunsdevils, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Suns do play defense. I am so tired of people bashing them. Yes, they are undersized and therefore they can't play the way San Antonio or other defensive minded teams play. But their shot blocking is fine, look up the stats. And at the speed that they play and many times they take a shot under 7 seconds, of course you end up playing a lot more defense and there are more possessions in the game. It is also natural that they allow more points because of that.
Nash's D is not that bad. For some reason he gets a lot of bad rep because of his D. I am not sure why people are picking on him. His help defense is good as he takes tons of charges in the paint. And I don't see too many people lighting him up one on one. - HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This was a great game. I was glued to the TV last night :D And the Suns playing like the Kings did a couple years ago? C'mon man, a couple years ago they were _still_ playing like this.
Nash for MVP...again. - PlasticSolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ JackyTreehorn
NBA games are 48 minutes long and each overtime is 5 minutes, so they still played less than 60 minutes total. - turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marion gets lots of props because of fantasy nation. he's one of the best fantasy players out there cuz he fills up the stat sheet.
- adamlazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess I lost that over/under wager!
- moofer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'd take Nash over Kobe any day. Plus, he's not a rapist.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and the nets, who actually kept the game close, and should have won it.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1marion?? underrated?? this guy is talked about ALL the time! we all know what he brings to the table, every night. now, nenad krstic is underrated. do you even see him score? and yet he averages sixteen a night.
- MyDocuments, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know where we can find a torrent of the game?
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually, the nets are just being screwed over by lawrence frank. now he's admitting it. it's adelman time.
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a difference between the best player and the most valuable player. Kobe is a better player than steve nash. However, the suns wouldn't be the team they are without nash. They're basically lost out there if he's not on the floor. The Suns are 2-8 without Nash since he returned to Phoenix in 2004.
- jrob48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So glad i had Nash on my fantasy team :D
- mbuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There is someone everyone seems to be overlooking: Marion. Nash is the best at his position in the game, but without marion's aggressiveness on the boards, his ability to guard and shut down ANY player on the other team, no matter their position, and his sneakiness to get 3 or so steals a game, make him the most valuable player on the team. The suns would not have advance past the first round in the playoff last year without him. By far the most underrated player in the league. But the suns are something hardly any other franchise is in the NBA: a TEAM, which makes the the most exciting team in any sport to watch. Barbosa, Bell, Nash, Stoudemire, Marion, Diaw, Thomas, and Banks all contribute (James Jones just needs to find his shot again and he would be on this list as well) and make this team what it is.
- jbrevik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To say that someone is the best in the NBA is absurd. There are easily a handful of players that have identical skills. Its not about who can jump the highest, or make the most spectacular dunk. Its not about being the best as an individual. its about being the best at making the rest of your team mates around you better.
- earthtoandy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Thats my Suns. Bringing back interesting fun basketball for all of us.
- PanXIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed, if there was one player on the Suns I would never trade, it's Marion. May not be a star, but a great player in every way and consistently healthy. (knocks wood) Toss him into any system and he'll play great and bring numbers.
@Ruffrider: I guess you missed 05-06 season when Marion was the big man of the team? Still had the numbers!
I'll also second the point that (bitching about a lack of D or their style of play or whathaveyou aside) the Suns are fun to watch. I suppose some "purists" want to see a big man bumping and grinding his arse into another man's crotch regions for 48 minutes, sorta like gay dirty dancing but slower, but not me. I'll go watch rush hour traffic if I want that level of boredom. - RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Chizz44
Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Steve Nash. You are right on just about everything you said. I believe, however, that the Suns need to change their Philosophy a bit. You brought up the Mavericks. They have enjoyed as much success, if not more since they have locked down on D. The Suns have the players to do it, they just need to do it. It doesn't look like D'Antoni will ever figure this out however. - moofer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"I LOVE how the best player in the NBA is a short dorky canadian white boy!"
That went to school in Santa Clara, CA to learn his mad skillz -
