Scottie Pippen planning NBA comeback (after 2.5 years of retirement)
hosted.ap.org — Scottie Pippen is tired of retirement. He wants to return to the NBA for a chance to win his seventh championship ring. The 41-year-old Pippen announced he's hoping for a late-season return to a contending team - preferably in a warm-weather city - nearly 2 1/2 years after he left the league.

Don't waste our time Scottie. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Yeah, don't waste our time, just like Celine Dion who came out of retirement after 18 months and had a Barbara Walters interview.
- calebhawk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11i remember playin as ol' scottie on nba jam... wow those were good times

This one included. - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Dunezone's comment may be the most confusing thing I've ever seen on Digg. I can't tell if he's seriously being sarcastic or sarcastically being serious, but either way, I'm pretty confident it makes no sense.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@livefastdieold
dude im so high it doesnt matter - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fair enough.
- kazumaSHELL, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2I just saw Pippen in the all-star challenge...... he looked awful.
- ralphmalph914, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Pippen will only have 1 comeback- MJ has 2 comebacks!
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1But this guy is not ruining his career by staring in a bad Looney Toons movie.
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Or by playing baseball (and sucking at it)
- DephexTwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, that guy sure destroyed his career with that movie. Little known fact: he was actually on the Bulls team that won the next three championships. But at that time nobody really took notice of ol' MJ. It was all about Dickey Simpkins by then.
- NachoBusiness, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15yeah, after 3 years of actually working, I'd like to go back to being a professional student at an Ivy, preferably one with lots of hot co-eds. Doesn't mean it's actually going to happen though.
- stgeorge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Scottie hit a couple of 3's and a half-court shot to win the Shooting Challenge at All-Star Saturday in Vegas... too bad Gordon screwed it up and disqualified da Bulls. Maybe Pip will get a contract with that performance.
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Scottie Pippen should be buried as lame along with Menstealia, but I think the best way to truly bury these guys as lame is to digg the link. Ironic?
- rig0rmortis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Phoenix Suns sound like a nice fit?
- Atlantics, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Somewhere warm not hot. LA sounds like a fit. Or maybe somewhere in Florida.
- edeliz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@atlantics, he said a Contending team.
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4LA is the best fit.. with Phil and the triangle.
Plus as he was a great 2nd fiddle to MJ, he'll be a nice compliment to Kobe.
- elcaminos, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Pottie Skippin!
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I can see it happening, especially on teams without a dominant point guard. Pippen was never a good stand alone player, he only did good when he was Jordans wingman.
Put him on a team where he doesnt have to take much offensive weight and responsibility and all he really has to do is provide good veteran leadership and smart play and he will be an asset to many teams.- emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4pip was the man on the blazers
- moxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I disagree, the years when Jordan left (mid 90's)...He was the leader of that squad...surely a good squad but he was the man...and they were still a great team record wise.
Though, from you said about which team, I agree...which makes him a perfect fit for the Laker's; Smush Parker isn't a great PG...not much a PG actually, rather a cross between the PG/SG positions. - ACE1906, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Pippen was never a good stand alone player, he only did good when he was Jordans wingman."
WHAT?!? He had his best season ever when Jordan was in retirement
Scottie Pippen in 1993-1994 :
All-NBA 1st Team
All-Defense 1st Team
All-Star Game MVP
3rd in MVP voting
22 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 5.6 APG, 2.9 SPG
- ericdano, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Who? *Yawn*
I'm glad real athletes like Lance Armstrong said they quit, and have stayed that way. - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4he's high. and I'm not talking about dunking.
- Kugellehr, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1wooo Pippen was a Kansas Jayhawk! Go Jayhawks!
but will he fail like michael jordan?- Ionik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Pippen went to Central Arkansas - not Kansas
- lollercoaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Now all we need is for Steve Kerr, Luc Longley, Toni Kukoc, and of course MJ to come back and I may watch the NBA again. Da Bulls.
- uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I saw steve kerr in a bar last year. he had a head like a cinderblock
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg up for the Longley reference :D
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dare i say you're missing out on Rodman there? *shudder
Well we do need someone for those rebounds dont we
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6his nose, however, vetoed the idea and was quoted as saying "i simply can't take any more elbows"
- SwissCamel, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Shame he has AIDS.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Huh? I think you're thinking of Magic Johnson.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeah, not only do you have the wrong person, but the one you are thinking of, Magic Johnson, never had AIDS.
It thought it was an 80s thing to still think that HIV and AIDS were the same thing. ESPECIALLY for someone like Magic Johnson, who has been declared HIV free for over a decade. As in, the levels are UNDETECTABLE. As in...if he were to g to a doctor who had no idea about his past and they took a blood test, they would come back NEGATVE for HIV. - SwissCamel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Don't try and tell me a basketball player doesn't have AIDS, because I know it's not true.
- sssok, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Pippen and Jordan, what a team.
- khilari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2more like Michael Jordan, wat a team
- dickfart, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0so?
- norcim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4hope he comes to dallas. come on mark make it happen.
- kid_kansas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2He is probably one of the most overrated players ever. He was only recognized because he got lucky being on a team with MJ.
- norcim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2An he was damn good at being the wingman. He didn't have to be the superstar of the team but he just got the job done. What else do you expect from a good wingman...dependable and unselfish.
- rubicante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He became a household name b/c he won championships and was a crucial part of those teams. He has a high "basketball IQ" which makes a short comeback at least somewhat plausible. I don't think anyone is comparing him to the greats or anything, but sometimes you just need a coach on the court to manage the tempo of the game and distribute the ball.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1I think I speak for everyone when I ask... "Who?!"
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Really? You think you can speak for everyone in not knowing who a 6 time NBA champion is?
- pacobelle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Pip, don't do it, be remembered as the 6 time champ you were/are...not as a team cheerleader sitting on the bench with 20 pound bags of ice on your knees. This time, don't be like Mike...don't return. We all saw what happened to "His Airness" on the Wizards...it was sad.
- gaagaale, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3why is he coming back after 2.5 years, couldn't he handle the real world, or something else, either the NBA institutionalized him or he over spend what he saved, and he needs more money!
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Well there's always the chance that he could just love the game and misses it.
- HelplessSEAL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow, he better train up or else other younger small forwards/shooting guards like Shawn Marion and Kobe Bryant own him. He has the talent, but two and a half years of going cold turkey must be bad. Possibly the only thing he can do is be that veteran man that teaches the young prospects, like how Jordan did with the wizards.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I seen this on that screensaver posted on dig today like hours ago
http://digg.com/tech_news/Possibly_the_coolest_screen_saver_on_earth
I'm serious - HappyMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe he can teach the younger players how to refuse to go into a tied playoff game in the final 1.8 seconds because you don't like the play called.
- cornfednbred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I wish him the best. Before he got all famous he did an appearance at a local mall. We bumped into him beforehand while he was shopping and troubled him to wait there while we bought a Bulls shirt for me to put on and have him sign. He obliged. I have never forgotten that. He seemed like a classy guy. Now that I'm older I look back and would have just let the man do his shopping, but I was young and my mom was buyin'.
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He could do quite well with any half-court team. Forget a run and gun team like the Suns. The guy can still shoot and set up an offense. And those arms of his haven't gotten any shorter :P . I live in Portland, he used to play for us, I don't see why he couldnt again. We have a young team that could use veteran leadership and we run a very slow half-court offense :P . A spot up shooter could make a difference on a team like ours. Any half-court team would be good for Pippen. I for one, would cheer him on and look forward to seeing him play at least one more year :D
- gerrycurl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i don't expect much from pippen in his older years, he's way past his prime. enjoyed watching him play with michael though, those were some good years.
irt the comments about pippen being a wingman only, i think whoever says that is right. there are certain guys that are good enough to lead a team to championships: michael jordan, shaq, hakeem the dream, and magic (started watching in the 80's, sorry to the older 70's guys that dominated). other guys like kobe, wade, billups, dirk, nash fit more of the runner up go to man, they're great players no doubt. without shaq, wade and kobe wouldn't have won a championship, swap in any other center in the game today, and they still wouldn't get a championship. that's not to say that jordan would have won without scottie. guys like scottie need a guy to take the pressure off, they play better when there's less pressure on them. jordan thrived in the pressure, so does shaq. kobe and wade are great complimentary players like pippen. however, wade and kobe have more potential than pippen in my opinion and it's not to say that they won't become dominant players in the future.
whoever gave stats for pippen during the year after mj's retirement is right, he had a great year, but he didn't win a championship. if you swap in another runner up type player like i mentioned, aka nash or kobe, i still don't think da bulls would have won. you need a mj or shaq to do it.
if you follow what i'm saying here, i'd like to gripe about the celtics. the celtics used to a be a dominant team, now they're *****. the reason, i believe, is because they made a swingman type player (paul pierce) into the go to, pressure-cooker man. he is not fit for that role, a great player, but doesn't have the charisma. put in a jordan or shaq, make pierce the number two and you might see some more celtic banners. check their ***** record, a shame to see that team managed, truly a shame.
lebron james has the potential to be a go to player, he's got charisma. give him some great players and you'll see the banners.
i'm also excited to see kobe develop, the lakers are my team this year even though they won't win the championship. when he gets a good cast, they will dominate.
i think he goes to miami.
nice to see sports get dugg up on digg, didn't think geeks cared about sports ;)- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You keep mentioning a jordan or shaq as if they're a dime a dozen. Players like jordan and shaq come around once a decade at most.. the reason the celtics suck is because all they have is pierce and a bunch of 15 yr olds. Great future, but nothing's happening now. Pierce is easily a top 15 player in the NBA.
- R2C13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Somebody needs some cash, quick!
- 1dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its got to be about the money. He had a rather low paying long term deal he signed with the bulls early in his career. He did get a better one near the end, but he did not last that long. It is amazing how some of these guys go through money.
- conto1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hope he brings the block haircut out of retirement also
- righttoarmbears, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SCOTTIE PIMPIN RETURNS!
*catches on fire, dunks* - BleedingCello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Scottie Pippen rocks, I hope this help his Rookie card prices.
Yeah, and wow, UticaOD link on Digg.......i'm speechless - CMUFinest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hang it up Scottie. It's not fair for you to jump on a good team hopping to grab another ring without doing anything. If anyone should come back it should be Barkley. Did you see him out run the 67 year old referee, man you still got it Chuck.
- htdub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Forget Scottie, Shawn Kemp should continue his comeback. His 48 kids are hungry.
- IceBurrg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pippen resented taking a back seat to Jordan (the best player EVER). How do you honestly think he'll like coming off the bench, stuck in the rotation behind some 19-year-old?
- IrwinRSchyster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0When will Pippen realize he's nothing without MJ?
- filmschool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't care .. I wanna see Pippen play even if its a few minutes. Props to him for pursuing his passion.
- relik0414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as Scottie coming back I don't mind it. I don't mind anyone coming back to do something they love if they think they're capable of doing it. I guarantee you this, he's better than some of them Joe's in the NBA right now!
- wabbitman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In alot of ways, Scottie was a better all around player than MJ. Scottie was a better passer, rebounder and defender. Obviously Mike was a better shooter and scorer-but Scottie did not have to score 30+ to beat you. He could beat you by scoring 16 points, 8 boards, 7 dimes and 4 steals.
