- Butmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47100 Million Dollars separates the team with the highest payroll from the lowest.
And yet - The Bobcats and the Knicks both finished the year at 33-49. Unbelievable. - GilbertZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Excellent resource. The knicks are not getting their money's worth.
- hockey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30It's simple supply and demand. If the NBA wasn't so popular then they wouldn't make as much.
This is no different than Bill Gates or any other businessman. In fact if you want to complain about salaries forget these guys and start talking about the owners. - walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24On the other side I'd say that the Bulls are more than getting their money's worth. Plus we get the Knick's lottery pick again this year. GO BULLS!!
- LucasKane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Actually they're paying 5! for not playing anymore
Allan Houstin
Jalen Rose
Shandon Anderson
Jerome Williams
Maurice Taylor - ichibans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Wow, Brian Grant gets paid $284,764.34 per point. in the 2006-07 Season
- jewcantdenyit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Allan Houston is not playing, but he is still getting paid. Please don't remind me either, as a Knicks fan, I am in a lot of pain with the poor contracts over the years. I think the Knicks are paying three players who are no longer on their roster.
- deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Actually, I think it's perfectly fair. People always complain about athletes' salaries, but just think about it.
If you, along with 12 other guys (including the coach), were the main employees of a company, and that company made millions of dollars based on your performance, wouldn't it be fair that you receive a proportionate amount of that money?
I think what would be unfair would be to pay these guys 6 figures while the team, and the owner, is pulling in more than 100 million a year. - userundefine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Most teams aren't, it seems. Steve Nash, not even in the top 30, is only making ~11 million and he's going to take his team to the championship, while Mr. #9, Kobe, will be watching it on tv.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Makes you wonder how much fun basketball would be again if jerseys were half price, tickets were half price, and salaries were half price. Back in the days (not that long ago), most stadiums had $4-10 seats.
- Aelbric, on 10/12/2007, -15/+27Anyone else find it disturbing that someone who essentially plays a game is making this much money? I think our priorities have permanently gone whacko.
- frodsteamin2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13who cares how much they make...i want to know who gets arrested.
- kilmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@ viperman5000
Not all of them do. Some only play college hoops because they have to play at least one season before they can go pro. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11There are people out there who go away to med school for years and years, and work their ***** asses off all day long saving lives... and they don't get paid a fraction of what these guys make. I'm not saying being a pro athlete is easy, but it's pretty much a slap-in-the-face to those who have a gifted mind and have devoted years to educating themselves.
- epyon180, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I can't believe that Shawn Marion gets paid more than Steve Nash for the Phoenix Suns. I think Nash is one of the biggest steals on that list.
- sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The knicks tried being the Red Sox/Yankees of the NBA but payed mediocre players an undeserved salary
The Suns / Spurs / Cavs on the other hand do betterl with less money. - elsewhen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@GilbertZ... i see LeBron here: http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/cleveland.htm - his salary really starts to take off next season.
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Anyone complaining about how much money they make just doesnt know what they are talking about.
Say Kobe has a 17 million dollar contract. Do you realize how much money from ticket sales he, by himself, brings in? WAY more than 17 million.
They dont get paid because they are good at sports and thats somehow worth something, they get paid because they are entertainers. - threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not that it justifies having a salary in the millions but it clarifies things more.
1) the owners make a ton: Like Chris Rock said, "Shaq is rich, the guy that signs his check is WEALTHY"
2) These guys are away from home 1/2 the year
3) They work their butts off to stay in shape (most do anyway...), if they don't work out day in and day out and watch what they eat they are out of a job
4) The divorce rate is extremely high for professional athletes.. for myriads of reasons (including #2) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Yeah, because anyone who notes the irony in a society that values losers like pro-athletes over teachers and doctors MUST be a "socialist". Puke faces like you need to be slapped every time you start that "socialist" crap."
It's supply and demand you idiot. There is a high demand for guys who can put a ball into a round hoop, guys who can hit a ball over a fence with a stick, etc. I don't think they "deserve it" but do you propose taking their money away? Do you think it's better that the owners make more money instead of letting a market (wage controlled already, mind you) pay some of the athletes more? Many of these athletes came from nothing, and a good number of them do give back... even some of the real pricks out there like Ron Artest give back a lot.
Any idiot can be a teacher, many of us have the capacity to be a doctor, only a few have the ability to be a professional athlete. People like you are the ones who need a real slap in the face. What's next? Do you propose we make President of the US the highest paid job in the world? Should we take money away from bartenders who make six figures? If there is a "problem" it's that people are too into rooting for sports teams rather than staying informed on what's going on in the world. Do you propose we put a limit on how much time and money each individual can spend watching sports each year? - LucasKane, on 10/12/2007, -3/+72009/10 baby! Knicks will be under the cap! $41,279,523
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Like a few posts above stated, some players (current and retired) are still getting paid according to the contracts they signed.
The Knicks are paying $20M (Houston) for someone who is retired. The Mavs are paying $17M for someone (Finley) who plays for their arch rival (Spurs). The Raptors are paying $4M (Mourning) for someone they traded 2 years ago because he refused to play for them.
Lots of interesting numbers when you break it down. I remember in the mid-90s reading things like this and it was staggering to see how many first- and second-year (unproven) players had larger NBA salaries than Jordan. Yeah, he made most of his money in endorsements but it's still kinda weird. Paying more for Eric Snow than LeBron James? Go figure. - sancho320, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If entertainment is not a priority, then we would die of boredom. Look at the other entertainment industries: movies, tourism, music, theme parks, etc. The entertainment industry is enormous, and its not just sports.
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I couldn't care less what these guys make. I'd REALLY like to see the owners no longer getting ridiculous tax breaks and free stadiums. Too bad we never seem to learn when they threaten to leave. I love my local teams, but I hate the thought of my taxes going up so they can have a place to play. And if we don't give it to them, well they'll "have to look at other opportunities." It's theft, and we allow it to happen.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I check this site everyday, as its not just a great list of player salaries.. It's a great collection of trade rumors around the NBA.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@tidu
Less than that. $400,000.Plus, obviously, the jets, living arrangements, etc.
Meanwhile, engineers, soldiers, doctors, etc. make $30k-$200k. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So are you saying that they should make an average salary and then the rest of the money goes to the owner? Wow, that would really suck for both the team and the fans.
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Don't forget road ticket sales. Kobe draws fans to Laker road games.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Fhwqhgads
The NBA is a business they pay the players a lot of money but also sell millions in tickets and merchandise. If one team didn't pick up a skilled player for 20mill another will and they'll get the $ from all the fans instead. - sunsdevils, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@indraneel24
Please don't make up facts on a fly. Suns have a horrible record without Nash, part of the reason why he won one of the MVPs in the previous years. Yes, Suns record without Marion is not good either and I am a huge Marion fan, but Nash is what makes the team go. Also, as a huge Suns fan, I would take Nash over Kidd any day. Kidd could not take us passed the first round and it is not like those teams did not have much talent. - Goner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, that is fallout from the Lakers having to dump Shaq and make multiple multi-team trades... Brian Grant made out a like a bandit.
- Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Add that endorsement deals can easily surpass a player's salary by 10x, they are most assuredly "ballin" as one would say.
- frimple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I will gladly bench warm for any team. League minimum here I come!
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This sums up the NBA and what is wrong with it:
Allen Iverson who makes $18 million a year,
". . . A leader... An icon of the league." - indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the bobcats. they (an expansion team - a few years removed) cut him a while ago.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and he's #1 in jersey sales.. Gotta be sure to throw away that old outdated #8 jersey and buy a new #24, of course!
- matlock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The NBA minimum salary for this season was $412,718.
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4it's because he wasn't an mvp when he came to phx. he was just a decent, perhaps a little above average, point guard. now he's godly.
- Veurruckte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@userundefine:
Compare the players around Kobe Bryant, to the players around Steve Nash. If the Suns had Kobe last year instead of Nash, they would have won the championship. You ask any GM which player he starts a franchise with, and he will tell you Kobe or Lebron - NOT Steve Nash.
How many rings does Steve Nash have? How many rings does Kobe have? But go ahead and hate on Kobe, it's the cool thing to do! - gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Kareem Rush $17,735
Who did he piss off? - pegisys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lebron is on the list he just didn't make the top 30
http://www.hoopshype.com/players/lebron_james.htm
he only made(lol only) $5,828,089 for the 06/07 season - GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The interesting aspect of this list are the bottom 10 contracts per team. Orlando, Detroit, Toronto, and Chicago all made the playoffs with the 10 least expensive salaries.
- brimg87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would be interesting to see how much the players got from endorsement deals each year. Lebron I'm sure has made more than his years salary in endorsement.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes, but all those noble firefighters/doctors/engineers need something to watch when they are exhausted... a hundred million of them need something to do/watch...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Try telling that to all the emo liberals here with no concept of supply and demand...
- dblespresso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Closet Socialists are coming out in droves... I think we need to put some controls on this capitalist... I want to be paid the same braiding my hemp sweater, its really hard.. Then we will create our utopia
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hockey, I would agree with you except that the teams are getting massive subsidies from taxpayers in the form of $300 million+ arenas. If they had to rely on the free market, teams wouldn't have nearly as much money and salaries would be significantly less.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2neither are the Mavericks! Go Warriors!!
- CogitatorX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does this include revenue from crack sales and pimpin' hos?
- Sphere777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah but Chelsea isn't a pathetic team like the Knicks.
