- drunkentoad, on 02/18/2008, -82/+438To win a slam dunk contest, shouldn't you have to actually slam dunk the ball?
Digg me down, but I recon that was pretty average. He didn't even touch the rim. - soupcancooloff, on 02/18/2008, -9/+345I liked the dunk with the cupcake more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQke0zfwiQo - theysayjump, on 02/18/2008, -62/+343Am I the only one who didn't think it was all that impressive?
- klick37, on 02/18/2008, -16/+263If you look carefully, you can see the Flubber on the bottom of his shoes.
- mets91, on 02/18/2008, -36/+219That should not receive a perfect 50. It was a mediocre dunk hyped up by a cape.
- plaing, on 02/18/2008, -7/+145it strikes me as being harder to throw a ball down through a hoop than to stuff it through, therefore more impressive.
- Regit627, on 02/18/2008, -4/+106Jordan did it (better): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqPRdzrjWpU
- xb00t, on 02/18/2008, -18/+85Thats not a slam dunk. This is a slam dunk - http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008 ...
- baldr, on 02/18/2008, -11/+61actually, it definitely was a dunk. his hands were above the rim and he threw the ball downward into the net (which is the definition of a slam dunk)
- morguth, on 02/18/2008, -3/+50Don't you mean Michael Jordan?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4EfHnG-e-vE
Jumped further, AND didn't have to throw the ball to make it in. - Timmaay, on 02/18/2008, -0/+45"He blew it out!! He BLEW it OUT!!"
- mateo60, on 02/18/2008, -2/+45I see what you're saying, but being high enough in the air and actually throwing the ball downward forcefully through the hoop like that should count for something. I wasn't impressed until I watched it a few times.
- anotherjeff, on 02/18/2008, -19/+61that was actually kind of lame..
- kameonr, on 02/18/2008, -3/+44Look up the definition of a "Dunk" and you will see what he did does qualify
- rjc5056, on 02/18/2008, -7/+46Can't there just be an automatic banning from digg for any asshat that feels the need to reference Soldjaugh Bhoiy, or however you spell it, in their comments.
Starting after this one, of course. - cr4ft, on 02/18/2008, -16/+54Black people are born with flubber under their feet
- jordan1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+37the hype is 90 percent of the contest....putting on the cape all that is part of it....there aren't anymore new things they can really do in regards to the actually dunking.
- RocketSeason, on 02/18/2008, -9/+43Did everyone forget that Jordan did it from the free throw line?
- mille716, on 02/18/2008, -3/+33No, that was infinitely more impressive. Every athlete in the world would be more impressed by what Howard just did than any dunk. His head was level with the basket for crying out loud. The people complaining are the types who whine about every damn rule while forgetting that some things are just supposed to be fun. It was just a dunk contest before an all-star game, not game seven of the finals.
- jasmus, on 02/18/2008, -3/+32I totally agree, when I first saw it I was thinking "but he just ended up throwing it in, he didn't even make it to the rim".
- jon30041, on 02/18/2008, -7/+31Hey ain't no Jordan... whole step past the free throw AND he didn't make the whole distance.
- Xeller, on 02/18/2008, -3/+27It showed creativity, and that's what (rightfully should) counts in the Slam Dunk Contest. Although he didn't dunk it, it's much more difficult to make that shot from that angle when you're flying through the air. There's only so much that the human body can do, so we'll probably never see a 720 Statue of Liberty or a 540 Double-Between-The-Legs dunks. That's why Howard's dunk was so much more entertaining and worth more points at the same time.
I do agree however, that his first dunks in each round were far more impressive. Being able to bounce it off the the backboard with one hand and slamming it down with the other hand a split second later?! That was impressive. - 4LeggedtriPod, on 02/18/2008, -10/+33It's a shame how far downhill the Dunk Contest has gone. The year Vince Carter won was the last truly great one, 2000 I think.
- Entheoddity, on 02/18/2008, -1/+23agreed
- michaelb1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+21When I heard about this I was expecting something above and beyond the dunks I grew up with. Jordan, Spud Webb, Dominique Wilkens ALL beat this one.
It was a good dunk but not extraordinary. Why was Magic and Kobe so impressed? They were in the building when Jordan soared from the free throw line.
THAT was old school. THAT was awesome. - yankeeblue, on 02/18/2008, -0/+19that was waaaaaaaaaaaay better than superman. come on! blowing a candle out on the rim!?
- illspaz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+19and the dude was 7'2". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVOLH21DB_w
- Pritchard, on 02/18/2008, -0/+19Someone explain to me where the ***** the ball came from?!
- kimcheefreak17, on 02/18/2008, -0/+18But the cupcake isn't.
- zionKing, on 02/18/2008, -0/+18I would have been more impressed if he started with an egg, 1 cup flour, 3/4 cup sugar and icing in small metal bowls on the rim and in midair baked the ***** thing between his butt cheeks! Where's the imagination with these players today?
- cr4ft, on 02/18/2008, -4/+20He threw it into the basket...
- sroop, on 02/18/2008, -1/+16UPS? I prefer Fedex.
- dysonlu, on 02/18/2008, -1/+16Interesting and original perhaps but not athletically impressive by these athletes standard. What would be more impressive? Eat the entire cupcake before touching the ground.
- bigwillystyle, on 02/18/2008, -2/+16that wasnt to win the contest
- cr4ft, on 02/18/2008, -5/+19shut up
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -4/+17You are being dugg down by haters. That was a great DUNK with GREAT showmanship..
- CapeKid, on 02/18/2008, -0/+12One could create a unifying Theory of Everything while dunking. That would be new.
- Asianwaste, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14Comparing Jordan to Dwight is like comparing Steak to Kibble
- thedragon4453, on 02/18/2008, -0/+11Yeah, basketball isn't quite the same without Jordan.
- grantmoore3d, on 02/18/2008, -0/+11I was honestly expecting a much larger angle when he was in the air... a little disappointed, however, I can't possibly do that, so props to him.
- Starkyy, on 02/18/2008, -7/+18He didn't dunk it, people just went nuts for the outfit.
- PoeticExplosion, on 02/18/2008, -2/+12Kameonr is right. It's a dunk if the ball goes down instead of up to reach the basket.
- alw111, on 02/18/2008, -5/+14Makes you realize how much better Jordan was than everyone else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBmrGe4zGdY
He should have gotten a 0 for not reaching the rim and what type of grown man likes Soulja Boy. - tacojohn48, on 02/18/2008, -1/+10Why would they hire announcers from the world wildlife fund?
- an0nym0uz, on 02/18/2008, -4/+13Yeah, if he could jump FAR enough to touch the rim.
- woofers07, on 02/18/2008, -1/+10His behind the backboard dunk was better.
- jaalin, on 02/18/2008, -2/+11lol @ diggers responses to sporting event - something about lolcats, something about metacafe how-to, and a guy equating "mad ups" with a door-to-door delivery company. seems like every response by someone who actually watches the nba got dugg down.
think about it - a seven footer with a vertical jump in the high 30s, with this level of creativity - a bounce lob from behind the backboard, to catch it where he did and still have the airtime, reach, and technique to get the ball through the bucket - all while wearing a superman costume!! if you've been keeping up with the decline of the dunk contest in recent years, you may know that every dunk has pretty much been done, or that the truly "OH SHI-" dunks can only be pulled off by a select few players (vince, jrich). dwight howard and gerald green's birthday cake dunk have changed the face of the dunk contest forever - it's now a contest of creativity and flair, as a way to bring excitement to the fans, and not just a contest of the best dunk, as demonstrated by gerald green's unimpressive score on the autographed no-shoes, socks-on-polished-hardwood between the legs dunk (try doing that on a 7-foot hoop).
it was the best dunk contest since vince (no disrespect to jrich, which i still hold to be the best dunk contest dunker of all time), but for an entirely different reason. the rules, which keep changing every year as officials try to find the right balance, finally made sense, the contestants finally understood it was about exciting the crowd and came up with some awesome dunks with good prop usage, and the commentators (emmy winning, no less) did a great job conveying the energy and atmosphere of the arena to us watching on tv.
entertainment at its finest! - inactive, on 02/18/2008, -7/+15Did they hire the announcers from the WWF or something?
- Enderplayer1, on 02/18/2008, -0/+8At least no Ho's were supermaned in the process
- Nebberz, on 02/18/2008, -1/+9it was about the vertical distance, not horizontal distance.
