- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/18/2008, -7/+3The Moon's cupcake dunk one was the best followed by the one from behind the basket by Howard.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/18/2008, -4/+2I meant Green's cupcake dunk...

- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/18/2008, -4/+2I meant Green's cupcake dunk...
- Pritchard, on 02/18/2008, -0/+19Someone explain to me where the ***** the ball came from?!
- Merp08, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3That's what I was wondering...wtfness
- bejayel, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1It looked like it was thrown over the back of the net.
- RG13, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1There was a guy behind the net who lobbed the ball for him to catch. You don't actually see the throw until one of the last angles.
- rentmitchum, on 02/18/2008, -1/+4Cool hwip.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/18/2008, -7/+3The Moon's cupcake dunk one was the best followed by the one from behind the basket by Howard.
- MiltonWaddams, on 02/18/2008, -49/+28Not really a dunk. But awesome nonetheless.
- baldr, on 02/18/2008, -11/+61actually, it definitely was a dunk. his hands were above the rim and he threw the ball downward into the net (which is the definition of a slam dunk)
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -4/+17You are being dugg down by haters. That was a great DUNK with GREAT showmanship..
- emehrkay, on 02/18/2008, -9/+5I agree, wasnt a dunk at all. He didnt dunk the ball because he was clearly unable to
- fuze44, on 02/18/2008, -6/+4Definition? Touching the rim is part of a dunk. NOT A DUNK!
- andrew2good4u, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0you're an idiot. You can dunk the ball without touching the rim at all. Many NBA players are capable of doing it
- baldr, on 02/18/2008, -11/+61actually, it definitely was a dunk. his hands were above the rim and he threw the ball downward into the net (which is the definition of a slam dunk)
- chancerainwater, on 02/18/2008, -25/+5Brent Barry is not impressed.
- morguth, on 02/18/2008, -3/+50Don't you mean Michael Jordan?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4EfHnG-e-vE
Jumped further, AND didn't have to throw the ball to make it in.- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Jordan wasn't 7'0" 270lbs either.. remember spudd's dunks were spectacular because of his size.. same here... only the other way. Howard is a freak of nature.
- tolbs, on 02/18/2008, -4/+1Jordan also had the whole court to run to gain momentum. Howard only had half of the court....big difference if you ask me.
- cwgannon, on 02/18/2008, -3/+2Jordan jumped off one foot, Howard off two. Jordan jumped for length, Howard for height. What are you getting at again?
- michaelb1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+21When I heard about this I was expecting something above and beyond the dunks I grew up with. Jordan, Spud Webb, Dominique Wilkens ALL beat this one.
It was a good dunk but not extraordinary. Why was Magic and Kobe so impressed? They were in the building when Jordan soared from the free throw line.
THAT was old school. THAT was awesome.- shakbhaji, on 02/18/2008, -3/+8It's impressive because of 1) his size 2) his showmanship and 3) his creativity. Dwight Howard is a center, Jordan and 'nique were smaller, more athletic guys so they had a bit of an advantage in this sort of competition.
- sfcaptainrob, on 02/18/2008, -4/+6That and he caught the ball in MID AIR! When Jordan did his dunk all those years ago he had the ball with him the whole time.
- oneperday, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1To echo shakbhaji on the primary reason this was damn impressive: size.
Guys his size aren't typically that athletic, regardless of the position they play. Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, even Shaq in his prime, none of those guys have the hops and athleticism of this dude. He is a freak of nature. BTW this is similar to the praise that Charles Barkley got in his time, because at his size he wasn't supposed to be able to do what he did. Not that they were overly spectacular moves, just that he was able to pull them off at his size. It's the reason we used to like to see Shaq dribble the ball down court and Dennis Rodman take a jump shot.
Dwight, a 6'1'' 270lbs center, jumped from a distance and had to go vertical first to catch the ball, then managed enough forward momentum to get in front of the rim while STILL HIGH ENOUGH that his head was level with it and he could throw the ball DOWN INTO THE HOOP. Now whether he intentionally didn't touch the rim doesn't matter much, because 1. that is still the NBA's definition of a dunk, 2. Nobody else his size can do that, and 3. it was frickin awesome.- oneperday, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I meant 6'11'' 270 lbs center. Dammit.
- morguth, on 02/18/2008, -3/+50Don't you mean Michael Jordan?

- smacksaw, on 02/18/2008, -29/+13Amazing air, almost a 45-degree angle and the shot was just epic.
- cr4ft, on 02/18/2008, -4/+20He threw it into the basket...

- drunkentoad, on 02/18/2008, -82/+438To win a slam dunk contest, shouldn't you have to actually slam dunk the ball?
Digg me down, but I recon that was pretty average. He didn't even touch the rim.- bigwillystyle, on 02/18/2008, -2/+16that wasnt to win the contest
- jasmus, on 02/18/2008, -3/+32I totally agree, when I first saw it I was thinking "but he just ended up throwing it in, he didn't even make it to the rim".
- an0nym0uz, on 02/18/2008, -4/+3very true, he wasn't even able to touch the rim, keyword:able.
- mateo60, on 02/18/2008, -2/+45I see what you're saying, but being high enough in the air and actually throwing the ball downward forcefully through the hoop like that should count for something. I wasn't impressed until I watched it a few times.
- sandbags, on 02/18/2008, -3/+3sure, but then this would be the high jump contest.
- idiotech, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2sure, it means he didn't actually make it (to the rim)
- plaing, on 02/18/2008, -7/+145it strikes me as being harder to throw a ball down through a hoop than to stuff it through, therefore more impressive.
- mille716, on 02/18/2008, -3/+33No, that was infinitely more impressive. Every athlete in the world would be more impressed by what Howard just did than any dunk. His head was level with the basket for crying out loud. The people complaining are the types who whine about every damn rule while forgetting that some things are just supposed to be fun. It was just a dunk contest before an all-star game, not game seven of the finals.
- alw111, on 02/18/2008, -12/+2You're obviously not an athlete. He wasn't going to make it to the rim. That was a weak jump regardless of what he said in the interview.
- idiotech, on 02/18/2008, -2/+2Uhm, no. He jumped high... but didn't quite make it all the way to the rim... lol - any athlete, especially a pro basketballl player, and they'll tell you - he wanted to dunk, but knew his jump was about to fall short, so it was a half dunk half shot - all crap. Howards other dunks were far better.
- Laminarcissus, on 02/18/2008, -9/+4and a hook shot from the opposing foul line is even more impressive, but you shouldn't be doing it in a dunking competition.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -7/+2GREAT point.
That you should be doing to get your girlfriend on Jeopardy.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -7/+2GREAT point.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -10/+5I love how you apologists think that he was TRYING to do that! What is not impressive is that fact that he didn't make it to the rim. Like he was TRYING to do. His jump didn't cover enough distance to allow him to properly dunk the ball. So, in desperation, he threw the ball. If you honestly think that he started outto do what he did, then you don't understand basketball at all.
- styler5, on 02/18/2008, -3/+5uhhh... no.
he was TRYING to throw the ball into the rim, which he accomplished. in an interview after the dunk, he said he'd been practicing it for a week.
- styler5, on 02/18/2008, -3/+5uhhh... no.
- Zurahn, on 02/18/2008, -1/+4So would throwing it from the other end of the court. Or solving Fermat's Theorem.
- Accolade1, on 02/20/2008, -2/+0(Referring to plaing) Since you took the liberty to (incorrectly) correct my grammar on a previous comment, here's something wrong with *your* comment. "therefore more impressive" should be "therefore it is more impressive." As trite as this sounds, this only emphasizes my point that your original complaint against my grammar is just as insignificant.
- plaing, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1i think you must have me confused with someone else.
- kameonr, on 02/18/2008, -3/+44Look up the definition of a "Dunk" and you will see what he did does qualify
- PoeticExplosion, on 02/18/2008, -2/+12Kameonr is right. It's a dunk if the ball goes down instead of up to reach the basket.
- alw111, on 02/18/2008, -9/+2Just a very weak dunk.
- ohnnyj, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1Doesn't every ball go down to reach the basket? Maybe you mean up then down.
- po43292, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Higher than the net in the player's hand, then down!
- PoeticExplosion, on 02/18/2008, -2/+12Kameonr is right. It's a dunk if the ball goes down instead of up to reach the basket.
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -4/+10Howard would have had to come DOWN a foot to touch the rim
- an0nym0uz, on 02/18/2008, -4/+13Yeah, if he could jump FAR enough to touch the rim.
- alw111, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0Hell, he's 6'11". He can touch the rim by raising his hand.
- TecK415, on 02/18/2008, -1/+7He is 6'11"....
- alw111, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0I don't think people realize that if your 6'11" your hand is at rim level when you raise it.
- davbmn, on 02/18/2008, -12/+10Jordan used to dunk from beyond that and touch the rim on the way down.
Not impressive for a 6'11" Pro.- Ionik, on 02/18/2008, -3/+7Jordan did dunk from the free throw line.... but it was a full court run up and jumped off of one foot. Dwight, ran from half court and jumped off two feet - infinitely harder to get distance by jumping off both feet.
- dutchdude15, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1.
- dutchdude15, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2It's a good thing he wasn't competing against Jordan then.
- Asianwaste, on 02/18/2008, -2/+14Comparing Jordan to Dwight is like comparing Steak to Kibble
- Ionik, on 02/18/2008, -3/+7Jordan did dunk from the free throw line.... but it was a full court run up and jumped off of one foot. Dwight, ran from half court and jumped off two feet - infinitely harder to get distance by jumping off both feet.
- WeepinAngel, on 02/18/2008, -2/+0Pfft! You have a commissioner in the crowd flipping out ecstatic BEFORE the vast majority of the crowd stands up with him, I would think that he's not going to care whether he throws the ball in, or dunks it.
- yelnatz, on 02/18/2008, -4/+2Dunking is actually throwing down the ball into the ring, finishing it with holding on to it for a few seconds. He just skipped the last part.
- alw111, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2He wasn't going to make it to the rim.
- dysonlu, on 02/18/2008, -3/+11That's indeed a "ridiculous" dunk, as in ridiculously-hyped-but-not-far-enough-to-reach-rim dunk. But the NBA sure knows how to market and hype things up.
- dandonia, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1Did you see how high that guy jumped though - just WOW!
- alw111, on 02/18/2008, -5/+14Makes you realize how much better Jordan was than everyone else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBmrGe4zGdY
He should have gotten a 0 for not reaching the rim and what type of grown man likes Soulja Boy.- renagadex2, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4wtf? that link rapes the link in the article...you should be dugg up
- scuba7183, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2jordan's last dunk is easily much better then howard's
- TypeEE, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I think when the ball was not thrown to you in mid air does add some difficulty and luck.
- renagadex2, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4wtf? that link rapes the link in the article...you should be dugg up
- Enderplayer1, on 02/18/2008, -0/+8At least no Ho's were supermaned in the process
- phamtasm, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2But isn't dunking still throwing the ball through the basket? You don't need to actually make contact with the basket. Dwight Howard put on a show and the competition was finally fun to watch this year.
- bunnybash, on 02/18/2008, -3/+3if you didnt notice the ball was thrown from behind the backboard, he catches the ball from 12' in the air, after jumping off 2 feet and throws it through, anyone that is not impressed by that dunk has never ever ever ever come close dunking it...
Magic Johnson (much more credible than anyone on Digg "The amazing thing about Dwights dunk, is that every player in the NBA just gave him a standing ovation, Kobe Bryant was impressed"
anyone that is blase about that dunk is an idiot... - mcm020, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Give the guy some props for showing some creativity. The NBA is filled with insane athletes that can all do do ridiculous dunks that can get repetitive, so it's nice to see some creativity in the contest.
- soupcancooloff, on 02/18/2008, -9/+345I liked the dunk with the cupcake more.

- DarkDx, on 02/18/2008, -15/+5The cake is a lie!
- kimcheefreak17, on 02/18/2008, -0/+18But the cupcake isn't.
- Timmaay, on 02/18/2008, -0/+45"He blew it out!! He BLEW it OUT!!"
- yankeeblue, on 02/18/2008, -0/+19that was waaaaaaaaaaaay better than superman. come on! blowing a candle out on the rim!?
- dysonlu, on 02/18/2008, -1/+16Interesting and original perhaps but not athletically impressive by these athletes standard. What would be more impressive? Eat the entire cupcake before touching the ground.
- Wendigo6x3, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5i think he should have blown it out, dunked, hung (grammar?) on the rim with one hand, grabbed the cupcake with the other, and fallen to the ground and taken a bite. he would have gotten a 50 for that.
- zionKing, on 02/18/2008, -0/+18I would have been more impressed if he started with an egg, 1 cup flour, 3/4 cup sugar and icing in small metal bowls on the rim and in midair baked the ***** thing between his butt cheeks! Where's the imagination with these players today?
- DSizzle, on 02/18/2008, -4/+1Anyone else notice that who ever posted that spelled 'candle' wrong? Redickulus.
// Ironic sarcasm - sickswaystop, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Its called "The Birthday Cake"
- Daiken, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2I was expecting him to take a bite while dunking but I guess blowing the candle out was pretty cool. Agreed, better than superman.
- tgc1, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1That one got me out of my seat. Ridiculous!
- busybenj, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1Much better than that Superman BS.

- jon30041, on 02/18/2008, -7/+31Hey ain't no Jordan... whole step past the free throw AND he didn't make the whole distance.
- SkinnyPuppy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1Right, and Jordan is the greatest player ever, and he didn't have someone throwing the ball to him.
Plus, he had to jump more vertically than MJ did to catch the ball.
It was impressive. It was also very entertaining which is what it's all about. The fans loved it and the players loved it - the same way they loved MJ, Dr. J, and all of the others who have participated in years past. Enjoy it for what it is.
- SkinnyPuppy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1Right, and Jordan is the greatest player ever, and he didn't have someone throwing the ball to him.
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -0/+7It wouldn't be as impressive by a 6'6" guy.. but Howard is 7'0" and 270lbs... it would be impressive if Spud Webb did it too...it's all in it's perspective
- Cerebral, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1If Webb did it... it would be a miracle.
- MrWally, on 02/18/2008, -8/+2You do it then.
- Daiken, on 02/18/2008, -0/+6If I was 7 feet tall and played basketball for a living, I WOULD do it a lot better than that.
- Couchy, on 02/18/2008, -1/+7Its because noone has REALLY seen impressive at the dunk contest since Vince Carter
Dwight Howard won simply because he was original and he did it with style. - oyflaaaayvin, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2Agreed. That was completely uneventful. Granted though, I could never do that...but as a general observer, I am left unimpressed.
- pensivewombat, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2Also, there are larger considerations than just the set up of the dunk. the way he reaches so far behind his head and then throws it down with such force is really striking. There isn't another player in the NBA who could have done that. The execution was absolutely flawless (and pish tosh to those who think grabbing the rim is neccessary). All you had to do was look at the reaction from other players to understand how good that dunk was. Kobe, an accomplished dunker himself, was absolutely floored.
- bunnybash, on 02/18/2008, -2/+31. Dwight Howard jumps off 2 feet afer 3 steps, jordan jumped off 1 after a full court run up
2. Dwight caught the alley from about 12 feet in the air (he didnt just go for distance, he had to go UP too)
3. Kobe Bryant was astonished by it
4. Anyone not impressed has obviously never ever come close to touching the backboard... then again this is Digg... what would i expect - Mac454, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1The worst part about the slam dunk contest is that the superstars don't do it anymore. Why does Kobe have to watch from the sidelines? Where was LeBron? The chance of injury is much slimmer here than it is during the all-star game which they do play in, so I don't see why they don't do it, other than selfish reasons. For the good of the league that is making them millionaires, they should be happy to participate.
Maybe the answer is that there ego's are SO big, that the thought of being one-upped by a much lesser known player scares them to death.- Cerebral, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Agreed. Kobe vs. James vs. Carter... damn.
- whatknight, on 02/18/2008, -17/+8its all about the ups. man's got mad ups.
- mets91, on 02/18/2008, -36/+219That should not receive a perfect 50. It was a mediocre dunk hyped up by a cape.
- jordan1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+37the hype is 90 percent of the contest....putting on the cape all that is part of it....there aren't anymore new things they can really do in regards to the actually dunking.
- CapeKid, on 02/18/2008, -0/+12One could create a unifying Theory of Everything while dunking. That would be new.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5The dunk he did JUST AFTER this one was new in regards to actual dunking. And lat year he used props to show off his athletic skills, not as a substitute. Last year he put the sticker of himself at the top of the backboard. That was new. Hell, even his final dunk could have been new. It WAS new, actually, but it culd have been better if it wasn't so lame. He should have put the nerf hoop 11-12 feet up, and then dunked a nerf ball after dunking the regular ball.
- sickswaystop, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1that would be sweet
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I think that is what every single person in the building THOUGHT he was going to do. And really what he should have done. The regular ball dunk wouldn't even have had to be all that spectacular as long as he made the 12 foot nerf one too.
- sickswaystop, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1that would be sweet
- sickswaystop, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1You think there aren't anymore new things they can do with dunking??? I can see your point but putting on costumes doesn't help its progression either, just makes it even more stupid!
- illspaz, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2and actually, the one thing he could have done that would be new (and ridiculously impressive) would be to dunk at 12 feet, which david stern shot down cuz he's ***** *****. the guys got ridiculous talent, with an infectious personality and a lot of style to go with it. not the best dunk ive ever seen - wasnt even a dunk per se - but still had me falling out of my chair... like VC hanging on the rim with his elbow. too bad i was too young to see MJ and Nique go at it, but i'm glad to see someone bringing a little excitement back to the NBA.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -0/+21. He wouldn't have been able to do it at 12 feet, no matter what he claims.
2. This is a contest for dunking in the NBA. the NBA doesn't have 12 foot rims, hence there should not be 12 foot rims for the dunk contest.

Whether or not he deserved a perfect 50, it was still really great. I think you're using the term "mediocre" very loosely here, not a lot of people can go that far.
I don't understand why people are saying, "Ahh that's nothing, I'm not impressed. Eh, it was alright I guessss" Let's see you put all your strength behind something only to have someone shrug their shoulders at you.- sandbird, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1You're new here, aren't you?

- ekin09, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Jordan by far owns the free throw line dunk, he made it into an art form, especially with the left hand sticking out like a wing gliding through air... and as we all know, become his logo. I am not comparing Moon's dunk with Jordan's but compared to Dwight's , Moon's was more impressive than people give him credit for. He put it in with his left hand, which at that speed and angle, the timing and everything has to be perfect.
- GMcD, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0There's no doubt that Jordan was one of the greatest slam dunk competitors ever but this was a theatrical dunk: Howard was trying to evoke the image of Superman. Aside from the cape and music, he does that better than your Jordan example for three reasons:
1) Jordan's body type is more like Spiderman's (I actually think of him more like a green goblin). Dwight Howard's body type is clearly Superman.
2) Howard left from two feet and launched himself, like Superman taking flight. Jordan left from one foot, letting him use the forward momentum of his run more effectively.
3) Howard caught the ball out of the air and threw it down like it was a freaking asteroid and the hoop was ICBM. I'm not saying Jordan's dunk wasn't great too, but Dwight's was THE Superman dunk.
The ball going in a straight line DOWN through the hoop makes it a dunk, end of story. Doing it from that far away just makes it harder. Why does Dwight Howard have haters??- GMcD, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0Oops, of course Reg was referring to the two footed sideways dunk of Jordan's, not the free throw line dunk, in which case my point 2 goes away. Even though going sideways is more impressive, going straight and horizontal is more true to the Superman image

- AShriveledSack, on 02/18/2008, -4/+5he really threw this in, wasn't so amazing. his first dunk was crazy though, and i loved the one where he tapped it off the backboard with his other hand. point is, his other dunks were better than this
- Kannebas, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2That dunk is highlighted by the pomp and circumstance of the Superman outfit and the Superman theme music that played after he did it. So, I agree. His other dunks were far superior to this. With his leaping ability and height, he's like Shawn Kemp, but without the drugs and 13 kids by 9 different women...
- Xeller, on 02/18/2008, -3/+27It showed creativity, and that's what (rightfully should) counts in the Slam Dunk Contest. Although he didn't dunk it, it's much more difficult to make that shot from that angle when you're flying through the air. There's only so much that the human body can do, so we'll probably never see a 720 Statue of Liberty or a 540 Double-Between-The-Legs dunks. That's why Howard's dunk was so much more entertaining and worth more points at the same time.
I do agree however, that his first dunks in each round were far more impressive. Being able to bounce it off the the backboard with one hand and slamming it down with the other hand a split second later?! That was impressive.- UMDWei, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1So be creative and get a trampoline... wearing different clothes to do a regular semi-dunk is lame.
- Xeller, on 02/18/2008, -1/+5That's the thing though... It's NOT a "regular semi-dunk". He didn't touch the rim. It's not quite a jumpshot, nor a layup. It's like a ridiculous throwdown that he pulled off from while taking off from just under the free throw line. And you have the realize that this is a 6'11" man who weighs over 250 pounds. The hops that you see from Howard with that size is just incredible, just as incredible as seeing Spud Webb or Nate Robinson touch the rim. If Nate Robinson can win the slam dunk contest by showing off the discrepancy between size and athleticism, then Howard deserves to win by doing the same. The cape was an afterthought that made it more entertaining.
- DonKarnage25, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1Glad to see someone else gets it.

- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2The socks dunk was absolutely NOTHING. I don't get hte difficulty. That he could slip? He was not wearing socks that he got at Walamrt for $5 for a 6 pack. They are not going to slip. Especially not with his sweaty feet. So what else was it? That he was now about an inch shorter? Big deal. And he basically did the EXACT same dunk that he did before only without the diffuclty of the pass. And his second dunk was absolue crap for a dunk contest. All it was was a guy sitting on a ladder flipping it up to him. That is FAR easier than having to time a high bounce, or a pass off the backboard, or whatever.
Greene making it to the finals is just another one of those wondrous moments where hte defending champ just HAPPENS to make it to the finals again...like Nate Robinson who did not deserve it last year.- styler5, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1wow.. don't hate, appreciate! why do you have such a problem with Green?
are you really so surprised that he made it to the finals (best 2 of 4)? his birthday dunk was really creative, and overall his dunks were a bit better than Moons, and definitely better that Rudy Gays.- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I have no problem with Green. I have a problem with the fact that his dunks were absolutely nothing spectacular last night and he was given gift judging to make it to the finals, just like NAte Robinson was last year.
I mean...think about the second dunk. That is something that I would basically do in high school (without hte ladder) when I was not QUITE able to dunk on my own. I couldn't get up as much height when I had to control the ball as I could when I was just running. So during the layup lines in warmups, I made sure that my point guard was always opposte me giving me the pass. And he would basically put the ball just at the riim as I went up for it. It enabled me to be able to dunk the ball to intimidate the other team. By senior year when I could dunk without the help, I stopped doing this
Granted, even with that help, I did not do any showbaoat moves like Green did, but I was also not expecting a 45 or whatever the hell he got, in an NBA dunk contest either.

I am not sayng that Jordan COULDN'T have done what Howard did in any of his dunks. But he DIDN'T.
But also...I love it when people think that their favorite player is hte one that will defy all odds and be the best forever. Like idiot Yankee fans who say that Babe Ruth would hit 90 home runs tdoay, when in fact, he wouldn't even make it to the majors. Athletes get better with every generation. That is why records fall all the time. Performances improve. To think that Jordan is an exception to that and will never be topped, or even hasn't been is absurd. In fact, take away the extra step that he was given, and the push ofs he was allowed on EVERY layup, and you would have seen a different Jordan. He still would have exceled, but he would have had to change his style to actually dit within the rules! GASP!

Yes, it was good but come on, people have been doing those same dunks with ease every year from then (not the chicken wing one of course) Even this year having Greene do the dunk under his leg without shoes on didnt get love and that was because people dont find it as impressive. We are seeing creativity which is what the dunk contest is all about. Oh, and this was a dunk....just because its done without touching the rim does not make it any less of a dunk, this guy has hops. Haha, and some fans in Orlando were mad they didnt draft Emeka....bet they are quiet now.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -4/+3Wrong...throwing the ball down is not a dunk. A dunk is having control of the ball through the rim. Period. That is the definition. You should not talk about basketball EVER again if you don't know anything about it.

It is kind of sad that the dunk contest has come down to getting points for wearing a cape. They may as well make the 3 point shootout be the finale. It is more exciting now.
I also thought a month ago when the NHL made an absolute mockery of their skills competition that there could be nothing worse done to a sporting event. - prodigy13, on 02/18/2008, -7/+5@drunkentoad: If you watch closely, Howard was so high up that he didn't even have to reach up and grab the rim like most NBA players. Instead, he got up so high that he could just throw the ball in. Quite a display of athletic ability, in my opinion.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -4/+5No...that is NOT why he didn't grab the rim. ALL players in EVERY dunk contest can get so high that they can release the ball downward and have it go in. Howard had to do it because he took off too far away from the basket, and had no chance of reaching the rim with his hand. It was a desperation chuck that paid off. It was NOT what he wanted to do.
Back before the idiotic "2 minutes to take as many chances as you can" rule, this would have been considered a missed dunk and he either would have used it as a replacement (when that was allowed), or he would have been judged on a 7 point scale, instead of 10.
This was not the NBA throw the ball into the basket from above contest.

- epmc, on 02/18/2008, -6/+7Pffft. Moon's 360 one-handed dunk was better.

- wicketr, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2I'm pretty sure the intended definition is "a shot in basketball made by jumping high into the air and throwing the ball, *when it is over the cylinder*, down through the basket".
If it's not over the cylinder when you release the ball, then it shouldn't be considered a dunk. When you "dunk an oreo" into a glass of milk you don't stand 3 ft away from the milk and throw it at the glass. That's called, "throwing an oreo at a glass". Not "dunking an oreo".- insomniac8400, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Shhhhhhhh. The trolls were having a ton of fun incorrectly reading a definition.

no wicky, the intended definition is pretty obvious, - TonyLocNE, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1lulz for the mental image of chucking an oreo into a glass of milk.
Nevertheless, its still considered a dunk

- TonyLocNE, on 02/18/2008, -0/+3according to webster "dunk" definition #3 : to throw (a basketball) into the basket from above the rim
So yes.. it WAS a dunk
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dunk - insomniac8400, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1So you can dunk from half court if you jump high enough? Everyone would disagree. Above the rim does not mean above it height wise. It means above it physically. Which this guy was not. Hence no dunk.
- pensivewombat, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1When you dunk your cookies into some milk do you stop to hold on to the edge of the glass or do you just dunk it like a normal person?
- TonyLocNE, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2it depends how loud the crowd is cheering because of how ***** stoned you are

- woofers07, on 02/18/2008, -1/+10His behind the backboard dunk was better.
- bingobongony, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2His tip to himself funk was better htan both put together. The coming from behind the backboard thing was done a year or two ago.
- ephemoL, on 02/18/2008, -10/+3Alright, let's say it is a dunk, if the definition is "putting the ball through the hoop from ABOVE the rim.".
This means , that if Dwight Howard jumped really high from halfcourt and threw it overhand, and it went in, then this would literally be a dunk from halfcourt.

- Qtip42, on 02/18/2008, -10/+5His hand was more than a foot away from the rim. Not a dunk, a new low for the contest.
