If you jump too late you're dead if you jump too soon you land on top of the car. Same thing if the car is going too slow. What he needs to do is jump over a stationary car that would be hops.

    One he shows the shoe at the beginning (obviously an ad). Two, Kobe's NBA contract wouldn't allow him to do something that stupid. Finally, the camera is stationary so they can layer the two shots over one another. Meaning that they film Kobe jumping in the air as high as he can then they stop the camera Kobe moves out of the way and they film the car going by. Back at the editing studio they put both pictures on top of one another and it looks like Kobe jumped the moving car.

Let's say the car actually passed a foot to his right, or behind him from the audience's perspective, he would indeed not need to jump as high.. the car actually did look a tiny bit too small because it was further back, but not so much so that the average person would be able to tell. Not saying he couldn't jump it, but as an illusion it is a helluva lot easier to pull off due to the aforementioned perspective.
