- SpikeLee, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I wonder if he really would be diagnosed with OCD.
- greywren, on 04/25/2008, -0/+10"If there is a speck of paper on the floor in his house, he cannot walk by without picking it up. He has tried. He has purposely marched up the stairs without correcting the glaring imperfection, but he's unable to eliminate the image from his mind until he goes back down, throws the scrap in the wastebasket, and restores order in his home."
This is pretty close to textbook OCD. There's a good chance that he would be diagnosed, albeit probably not as a severe case. - RockoTDF, on 04/25/2008, -2/+3Unlikely, superstitious behaviors are *extremely* common in professional athletes (especially pitchers in baseball). Associations between OCD like rituals and routines are formed with successful games, and in turn become habit.
- anselm83, on 04/26/2008, -2/+1Allen sounds less like an OCD sufferer with awesome basketball skills, and more like a douchebag with awesome basketball skills.

http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=607689594 - JavertHolmes, on 04/25/2008, -0/+31So clearly the way to beat him is to throw a bunch of paper scraps all over his house -- glue them to his ceiling, the walls outside his home -- sometime during his nap from 11:30-1 to the point where he's cleaning up for a long period of time and can't have his chicken and white rice meal on time at 2:30.
He will either have to choose between cleaning up the mess which MUST be cleaned or eating his dinner at 2:30 which MUST be eaten at 2:30.- DIGGerPhelpsND, on 04/25/2008, -0/+12 You are sadistic.
- ScottMitchell, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I wonder if the best janitors have severe OCD.
- Bajwa123, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2I'm not surprised. The man is unstoppable from behind the arc
- Nuttmeg, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2UCONN in the house! Go Celtics!
- theloofa, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1KG's got some weird stuff, too... but not QUITE as OCD-like.
- urgeigh, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I wonder what he does when they have an early afternoon game? Be interesting to see his stats on those days..
- nahsrocketeer75, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Reminds me a bit of Wade Boggs, both in terms of the rituals and the sucess. Go Celts.
- psevium, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Ahhh Wade Boggs, goes down smooth

- riomx, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1Jesus Christ. I guess no one here has seen The Aviator or heard of Howard Hughes
- RiMac, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4"An insult," says Allen. "God could care less whether I can shoot a jump shot."
It's true. It pisses me off that people could be so dismissive, as if he hasn't logged years of work practicing and perfecting his game. I have no respect for the types that think they could do what he does if only they were blessed with that special "something."- punkcat, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2i like it when people thank god for stepping in a game, in essence cheating, and thank him for it.
i'd hate to die and see "the supreme being" sitting on his thrown in a Lakers jersey. - anselm83, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1It's also good theology.

Cool article! - nmyra, on 04/25/2008, -2/+0great article. sheds a lot of good light on what it is like to be OCD in a sporting environment. i say this as i drag an icon into my recycle bin because i can't stand to have anything on my desktop. i can relate to ray allen.
- Trav3133, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2I enjoyed reading that, dugg.
- gaqua, on 04/25/2008, -1/+13Not very often do you see writing of this quality in relation to Sports, only a handful of guys can report on a situation like this and really convey the personality traits and quirks of the people involved without resorting to "good guy" and "bad guy" cliches. Dugg.
- Gillums, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4"only a handful of guys"
Jackie Mac is one of the best sportswriters working. And she's a she.- pixelate, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Not only that, the Globe just bought her out. The American newspaper is dying.
- gaqua, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the info, Gillums. I hadn't read anything by her before and was not familiar with her work. Due to the androgynous first name, I just assumed it was a guy, based on the fact it was sportswriting. My chauvenism, I suppose. I'll be looking for more of her work - I enjoyed that article a lot.
- Gillums, on 04/25/2008, -0/+4"only a handful of guys"

- dwninjungleland, on 04/26/2008, -1/+1"Let's do a human interest piece on one of our new players!"
"OK-- let's try for the angle where we portray how he has problems... just like everyone else!"
"Won't that be boring though?"
"Nah." - orph3us, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2wow, that's a good story, thanks for the link anderzole! ... OCD runs in my family too, its hard to fight it. When every day is trying to be the opposite of what you are built to be, its OCD in junk mode. Embracing your mental illness can keep you "sane" but you butt heads with people a lot that way. Learning real flexibility can be hard for many including me.
- Cashmoney504, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2very good read
- strikerzerox, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1This is a very well written article
- zoziw, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1OCD sounds interesting but I'm just too lazy to try to go through rituals like that.
