The problem I have with this is not specific, but more in general - I don't really like the chippiness of the NBA. Hockey? Awesome. Basketball? I want to see them a bit less physical.
Varejao elbowed Ray and then threw him to the ground. Ray paid him back with an elbow. An elbow for an elbow. People need to remember there is such thing as righteous anger and standing up for oneself. While turning the other cheek is great, sometimes you need to stand up for yourself.
Varejao is a huge guy compared to Allen, Ray can't let him use his size to push him around. Varejao and everyone else are going to think twice about bullying a guy who is largely known to be one of the classiest finesse players in the NBA. Varejao is as dirty as it gets. Considering Ray's initial reaction was to give it to him as good as he got it, I'd say Ray was ready for what he know Varejao was planning.
