- fino35, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36That's how good we are, we kick our own asses.
- imspacevanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I definitely agree. Let's just pray that NASCAR never becomes popular outside the US.
- eljaco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Puerto Rico still plays at the international level, so it's not the same. I assume this is big news because Puerto Rico beat the US last year.
- mikebyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Bringing on Coach K was probably the best thing they could have done!
- Stratacaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15N.A.S.C.A.R. = Non Athletic Sport Centered Around Rednecks.
- Uhhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What I really enjoyed was the fact that the US team actually played DEFENSE. TEAM defense. :-)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hope USA plays well, because you were hugely disappointing in last world championship.
Who are the favourites for the world championship?
Basketball is the only American sport that is popular worldwide unlike American Football, Nascar, Baseball. - Thundercat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ icefrakker
No, technically not the same. California is a state (within the United "States"). Puerto Rico would be considered a territory. When they start paying federal income taxes, then we'll talk. - ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Baseball is quite popular in many Latin American countries and its "big in Japan" as well. It may not be universally popular, but it certainly has some appeal outside of its country of origin.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@nightfall
The reason we lost last olympics is because all of our players are money hungry pieces of ***** and they don't want to play in the olympics since they won't be getting paid. If all of the best NBA players played there wouldn't even be a reason for the games to be played. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3^^^"quality of pro basketball games plummeted when Jordan retired."
One person does not affect the quality of basketball of an entire league.... You probably are a Jordan fan not a basketball fan."
I'm a Knicks fan, so no I wasn't a fan of Jordan's -- nor did I like him dunking over Ewing in every highlight film.
One person absolutely effects the quality of basketball in the league. The best player sets the benchmark for how players are looked at. After Jordan was gone, the best player...and I use that term loosely...was Kobe Bryant. To my understanding, Kobe can only hit 30 points when he takes 30 shots. Curiously, the quality of play in the league went down until the stacked Lebron James draft class.
Do you think the fact that basketball is having a minor resurgence right now is because Kobe scored 81 in the regular season? Nope. It's because people want to watch Lebron and Wade, and the players want to play to their level. True talent breeds more talent...and when Jordan left...there was no one to fill his shoes. - elebrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would welcome Puerto Rico as the 51st state. Did you all see ms puerto rico in the ms universe contest?
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I read USA hopes to crush Puerto Rico.
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else glance at the title and immediately think "WTF-the US just invaded Puerto Rico!" before looking closer?
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Basketball is easily the second most popular sport in the world. The Yanks defense was vicious last night. Every player put forth effort in getting back and chasing down the Puerto Ricans. This didn't happen in the Olympics and was a reason we lost.
- brjndr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mike D'Antoni, the Suns coach, is an assistant coach for the USA. After playing in the NBA, he played in Italy for several years, and was even on their national team since he's of Italian origin. He also coached Italian teams in Euro League basketball for 7 or 8 years before he started in the NBA. He has a lot of international basketball experience
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@nicu:
" I think I speak for all Americans"
No.
You don't. - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3seriously-- USA's performance in Greece (2004) was an embarrassment to our country. I know that there are Euros and non-US citizens in the NBA, but come on, basketball is our country's sport (and football). Hopefully Coach K can pull together a team that will bring USA to the forefront of international basketball... just like the glory days in 92: "The Dream Team"
- ccourt23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3^^^"quality of pro basketball games plummeted when Jordan retired."
One person does not affect the quality of basketball of an entire league.... You probably are a Jordan fan not a basketball fan. - theprince, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of the reasons for that might be the influence of Coach K. maybe. i'm not sure though...
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its hard to invade a country that is already ur territory...
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@reknaps - F1 is second most popular in Europe, but it's not even an afterthought in Asia, or Africa and most of S. America. Moneywise, it might be number 2, but in terms of participation and spectators, basketball is easily number 2 behind soccer.
- rfdz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Thundercat - just felt I needed to tell you something about what you know about PR...
I agree with your explanation about the territory part, though Kentucky,Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are considered "Commonwealth" states of the US, in other words, territories of the US, PR is just an unincorporated commonwealth. As far as taxes goes, PR does pay Federal Income taxes, not in the same way we do in the US; the US knows how to get it's money from PR. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@swr1ght
They tried to do the opposite of what you're proposing -- and it's working. Very few NBA coaches are respected by the players and are too in tune to playing their brand of basketball. As I'm sure you're aware, the quality of pro basketball games plummeted when Jordan retired. Putting in a college coach (a coach that probably knows the intricacies of little things like defense and unselfish play) - and one with the an incredible resume will hopefully instill a love of basketball these guys havent seen since they were in school.
In the case of Lebron, he'll be playing real basketball for a real coach for the first time in his pro career. It's gonna be exciting to see what he can do when his potential is truly unleashed in both ends of the floor. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Football is the only sport that americans totally dominate... and i don't see that domination ending anytime soon
- rfdz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@prcrash -
I'm sorry to tell you this, I see you're an activist and all, but PR is a territory, an unincorporated territory. That's what it means to be a commonwealth of the US. Don't get me wrong, I want PR to be a state, as a matter of fact, I'm PRican, I just think we shouldn't get bent out of shape when somebody says something incorrect about PR, help them understand, that's why they like us so much.
@elebrio....I know man, she is fine!!! - badave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to point out that Coach K coached the '92 Dream Team...
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coach K is a great coach...BUT it would have been great if they had managed to get a great coach that has experience coaching against international teams. There are quite a few very well thought of NBA and college coaches that have also coached in the Euro leagues.
That's why they hired coach D'Antoni...
Coach K is perfect for this team, USA basketball needed a coach that could discipline the team and create "team" basketball. The players will do the rest, no one is beating USA this time around, sorry. - aks123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not only picking coach K, but also picking role-players, rather than a bunch of arrogant superstars. USA arrogance is one of the reasons why they didn't get the gold medal in 2004.
- poonannie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not the whole team was really playing defense. If you watched they didn't start to blow them up and take control when they brought out Hinrich, Brandt, and Arenas. That starting line up was not playing proper team ball that will win....maybe they were just trying stuff out though. Those alley oops are gonna be the death of this team. I still don't understand why Paul is starting instead of Hinrich or Arenas. Both are much better defenders and more experienced working the point. With Hinrich they could actually set up plays and be much stronger defensively and with Arenas they could set up plays and be much tougher inside.
- treleung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Basketball is popular all over asia, a lot of the the middle east (Yes, believe it), North America, and most of Europe has leagues. The only other TEAM sport with world-wide appeal is soccer. While it may not be the second most popular sport in the world, I'd say it's the second most popular team sport.
- slax2501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the U.S. really embreaces a particular sport once they have a World Champion. That hasn't happened in Soccer, Chess or Table Tennis, for instance. They are trying but you won't see that on ESPN, ABC or all the other big tv networks. But money is a bug factor. I heard the last FIFA World Cup was the equivalent of 51 NFL Super Bowls. Thats why ESPN and ABC decided to broadcast the event.
I think the NBA players have forgotten the fundamentals and this is going to be crucial again in the next tournament. They can play "NBA basketball" but not "International Basketball." I want to see them again playing against the European countries. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Whoever is digging down the Boeheim comment, you're retarded. Between him and Coach K , they got these upcoming olympics locked.
I was personally exstatic to see Boeheim help coach team USA. - swr1ght, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Coach K is a great coach...BUT it would have been great if they had managed to get a great coach that has experience coaching against international teams. There are quite a few very well thought of NBA and college coaches that have also coached in the Euro leagues.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@NICU: What the hell is wrong with you? Don't get offensive, he wasn't actually hating on America. He was stating a fact.
There is no reason why you should take offence to him saying that an American sport is not popular in other countries. - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Boxing has been replaced by Mixed Martial Arts in the world. Boxing is a dying sport and isn't even close to being #2 in the World.
- postapoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1basketball is huge. I'd agree with jamesey, 2nd in the world
- mamasu4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1basketball and baseball....both originated in the US....and we can't even beat other people in our own game. Let's just stop playing those 2 sports and direct our efforts towards soccer! w00t w00t
- himay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You realize this would mean that all government documents, street signs, and any public writing of any kind would have to be in English.
If only the Iraqis shared your welcoming of cultural imperialism! - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course America dominates football, because the only other country with a real football league is Canada (and the CFL just isn't as good as the NFL).
The only really international sport that the US embraces on a large scale is hockey, and that is still heavily tilted to North America (otherwise the all-star games wouldn't be "North America vs. The World"). After that it goes golf, tennis and then soccer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree, basketball is the 2nd most popular team sport in the world. Note the word team sport.
Like football (soccer), you can play the game nearly everywhere, you don't need armour (protection) like American Football.
This is the reason for its popularity IMHO. - himay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoops, meant above comment as reply to @pcrash
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1".497%"
That sounds kinda low. - NetImp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0F1, in terms of spectators ( at least according to Wikipedia, the BBC and Google ) has the largest TV audience of any regular sport ( ie. outside of the Olympics and FIFA World Cup ).
I doubt basketball is even the second most popular team sport, it is widespread across the globe but with the exception of the obvious it is a minority sport. It is likely cricket is actually the second most popular team sport, although not as widespread, it is the number 1 or 2 sport in the countries that play it and when those countries include India, Pakistan and Bangladesh that is quite a lot of people. - mikedaul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MJ averaged 30.1 points, shooting .497%, playing 38.3 min/game (and also averaged 6.2 boards, 5.3 assists, 2.35 steals, .83 blocks, and 2.73 to's)
Kobe is currently at 23.9 points, shooting .451%, playing 35.7 min/game (and also averaging 5.1 boards, 4.5 assists, 1.5 steals, .6 blocks, and 2.9 to's)
I think oscar robinson was as good as MJ:
"We hear about "The Big O" averaging a triple-double for one season (1961-62), but he actually averaged a triple-double over the first five seasons of his career (1960-65) when the games are strung together. In those 384 games, he averaged an astounding 30.3 points, 10.6 assists and 10.4 rebounds." - himay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The U.S. has no problem with Puerto Rico behaving like a separate country in sporting events...but hey, if they need troops to send on oil errands, who do you think gets picked first?
- warox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hey screw you buddy, because you don't speak for me.
Hey screw you buddy they were disappointing in the olympics. - elebrio, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9 Puerto Rico 92 - 73 United States
