My AAU team was sponsered by Converse. If it wasn't for them, not of us would've been able to play. It gets really expensive to rent out a gym, buy uniforms & balls, & to travel from city to city.
Its just like any other organization, the people who put money into it get a say in how it is run.
Welcome to the real world. - hutch113, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NBA players deserve to get paid because playing in the NBA is their full-time job. The reason that they get paid so much though is that it is a small roster of players, thus fewer employees for the team, yet 15-20,000 people can get packed into the stands for 41 home games not including pre-season and the playoffs. This brings in huge amounts of money plus the deals with Nike or other sports apparel companies and logos and trademarks are also used to make money. Thus if the players were still making at most $1 million per season the profits for the owners would be astronomical. As it is, Professional Sports franchises are still widely considered to be some of the best investments because they consistently turn a profit, and in many cases a rather large profit. This puts the economies of scale so that the players can demand more money for the services that they produce on the court that make the owners that money.
As for the NCAA, you must remember that these are colleges and universities. These places of higher education often utilize sports as a way to attract people to their school and to develop a sense of loyalty to that school. The players in turn should be getting a free education that can range in actual value from a few thousand on up to a couple hundred thousand at some schools. Yes, the schools and the NCAA make huge profits from these athletes, but that money is not pure profit in the sense that it is for the professional leagues. As with most schools, often only one or two sports at that school will make a profit, that profit is then utilized to support other sports. If the NCAA and Universities were run like businesses, there would be virtually no women's sports and really only 3-4 men's sports, but because this money is not pure profit and is reinvested many other students then get the opportunity to continue to play the sport that they love while getting an education and a degree. - Dallas70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here's a few other things they're worried about (And they have a good reason to):
- Point Shaving
- Betting on games
- Using boosters to buy high school talent/spoil said-athlete
NCAA isn't perfect, but it's much better than the other option of 10 year olds being scouted for the pros and shoe companies/agents taking away the "amateur" fun of the game.
BTW - Kids don't play for free, check out how much a 4 year scholarship runs at any major university and it's hardly chump change - thoughtfulclown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really find this interesting. As a teenager who play AAU basketball during the summer & high school ball during the school year I see alot of kids who are not at all academic. They are talented players though. It would be great to have all of the different levels of basketball working together for a common goal and to see more preparation for the guys who aren't going to be able to make basketball into a career.
The exposure that this would bring to players who otherwise wouldn't get noticed would be great as well. - shortstack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the ad money that they get, added with the money that schools make off players is crazy.
but at the same time i don't think that players in college should get paid. the whole thing should just not be taken as seriously. ITS EFFING SPORTS. nothing else. - david630, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NCAA players should be there for school first but they also deverse money to pay for their rent and well as a per diem thqt they should be able to use on day to day expenses.
- zboog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1so, because it's "EFFING SPORTS" it's not worth paying the players? Would you make the same argument for the NBA, that because it's a sport, they shouldn't get paid?
- procdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2lol @ "shoe companies"
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1exactly.
why does a shoe company have ANY say in how the sport is played/organized?
oh, I forgot, sports is about money, not sportsmanship. - schlesinm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0All the NCAA is worried about is that they keep getting kids to play for free so they can make billions on the NCAA tournament.
