- georgemason01, on 11/20/2008, -1/+13Kwame Brown just wasn't ready coming out of high school, but now is actually starting to show promise in Detroit.
Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan will be the most infamous blunder for years to come. - herbiehancock00, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7Adam Morrison?
- jfdolier, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6A valid point. Just for the record though, here's the last few #9 picks...
2006: Patrick O'Bryant
2005: Ike Diogu
2004: Andre Igoudala
2003: Michael Sweetney
2002: Amare Stoudamire
2001: Rodney White
2000: Joel Przybilla
5 out of 7 guys might as well not even be in the league any more... - krahzee, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7No Len Bias?
The guy dropped dead of a coke induced heart attack the day he was drafted second Overall in the '86 draft.
How do you get a bigger bust than that? He never even practiced with the Celtics, and they used a number two pick on him that year. - denshvalaunt, on 11/20/2008, -2/+7Where's the class of 2002 Dukies Jay Williams and Mike Dunleavy? Two and three overall? I know Dunleavy has been doing better lately, but he was a P.O.S. on the Warriors. EVIDENCE: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/149/360969469_a97a5 ...
- dhyancraig, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5How does a bust like Danny Ferry eventually become a GM for an NBA team?
"Bowie's selection underscores the cardinal rule behind NBA Draftology: You can't draft for need. The Blazers, flush with Jim Paxson and Clyde Drexler on the wings, needed a center and passed on drafting Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton. Bowie struggled with injuries throughout his 10-year run and finished with career averages of 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds."
Tell that to the idiot GMs who still draft for need in every sport. Some of you may argue that the in the NFL you should draft for need but many teams continue to find themselves in the lottery at the end of every year by drafting for need instead of taking the best player available. - medacomix15, on 11/20/2008, -2/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Araújo_(basket ...
Not dugg because there was no Rafael Araujo. The Raptors drafted him right before Andre Iguodala was drafted >_ - SSPink, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4"[Kwame Brown] is actually starting to show promise in Detroit."
What???
He's a #1 overall draft pick who is averaging 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds so far this year. He's showing promise as a mediocre back up big man... when you're drafted #1 overall and your career aspirations turn into "maybe I can find a role backing up Amir Johnson" you are the definition of 'bust'. - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Sam Bowie almost averaged a career Double-Double. And while picking him over Jordan was not a good move on Portland part, we already had Clyde Drexler filling the roll of shooting guard.
but you know we all have 20-20 hindsight.
also...... RIP CITY!! 106-74! whu what!! - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5ARE YOU KIDDING?!
he's pulling in a double-double every game he plays IN 17-20 MINUTES!
did u see him in San Fran? Did you see him in tonite against the Bulls?! - afrocarter, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I hope not...if he can stay healthy he'll be a freakin' monster!!!!!
- l31101, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4So glad Andrea Bargnani wasn't on the list. I can see why some people are calling him a bust but he's done fairly well this season, and I think, in time, he'll be a decent player, not great, but not bad enough to be called a bust. And yes, I'm a Raptor fan.
- herbiehancock00, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Oden's strong suit is his defensive ability. He's averaging 2.4 blocks off 21 minutes. He's just starting up. Give him some time. He'll be average a double double and 3 blocks by the end of the year.
- sonar1, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3i ***** hate kwame with a passion. staples center always booed him.

You should work for CBS broadcasting some SEC football. douche - Bisclavret, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Where the heck is Bryant Reeves? This guy was, along with Stu Jackson, the epitome of failure when it came to basketball in Vancouver.
RIP Grizzlies. I still have the bear 'claw' that I bought at a game when I was a kid =( - TheGooseyOne, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Once you win an award ending with the words "Player of the Year" you can't be considered a bust anymore.
- SSPink, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2My favorite bust is Robert Traylor, draft #6 in 1998.
Not just because he was drafted so high and sucked so hard, but because of one of the worst draft day trades in NBA history. Traylor was draft #6 by the Dallas Mavericks but was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks on draft day for #9 pick Dirk Nowitzki, but not just Dirk, because that wasn't enough for a talent the level of Robert Traylor, so #18 pick Pat Garrity was also part of the deal.
Not only did the Milwaukee Bucks trade away future MVP and multiple All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, they also gave away Pat Garrity who, while not being a star by any measure, also had a more successful career than Traylor. More importantly, Garrity served as the centerpiece of a deal the Mavs then made with the Phoenix Suns in which the Mavs acquired Steve Nash for Garrity and a future 1st round pick.
Those deals amounted to one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history, taking the Mavericks from the worst franchise in professional sports to a perennial playoff team and sometime contender. All for Robert "Tractor" Traylor and a draft pick*.
*to be fair to the Suns, they used that pick (which turned out to be #9) on Shawn Marion, a multiple All-Star. - jmpeagle, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nERNj0afyY
Sam Bowie, while it is unfortunate that michael jordan was drafted after, he made sense at the time because of whom the trailblazers needed. Also, Bowie was the 2nd and not thr 1st pick of the draft. Jordan was the 3rd.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_NBA_Draft - thejokker, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2you get on out of here with you research and look'n stuff up... we dont need any of that.
- coldwind777, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I was surprised he wasn't there. He always goes on these lists. I heard he was doing a little better in Memphis but...man. All sorts of fun, there.
- grapheads, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2He just needs to work on his fouling.
- aherman, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Jonathan Bender uses his millions from his rookie contract for good. http://www.thejonathanbenderfoundation.com/
- wezults, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Lottery picks are ecpected to last more than two years in the league.
- thorbergdt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2As a Minnesotan they should just title this "minnesota timberwolves draft selections" Omit KG
- fiziks, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2As a Pistons fan him not being on this list made me feel a little better about that whole thing. This AI trade is starting to look better though, once again showing that Joe Dumars is the man.
- woofers07, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3I was scrolling this list just waiting for the first Oden hater, cause there's plenty of them. I love how Oden played only NINE MINUTES before idiots like you were labeling him a bust. The guy's a monster already and still isn't in game shape yet. Please pay attention to basketball before making stupid comments.
- aarku, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Kevin Love, coming up. :(
- robds, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2that picture summed up Chris Washburn. He once checked into a game with his shoes untied because he wasn't sure how long he was going to play that game and tying his shoelaces made his shoes hurt.
He was last seen hanging around with a gang of eighth graders at an Atlanta middle school. an honest-to-God case of arrested development at best, borderline mental retardation at worst. - owls27, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Yinka Dare!
- pennvneff, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2He just had a 20/10 night
- HelplessSEAL, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Darko picked ahead of D. Wade, Carmelo, and Bosh? That's an epic bust right there...
- afrocarter, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Araujo was a terrible pick...that was a lot of pain we had to go through in Toronto, man.
p.s. where IS Darko on the list? - afrocarter, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3J. J. Redick...
- unclebrak, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1the double-double has only been for the last few games, but hopefully more to come!
- inefekt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1He's played like 5 games, kind of premature!
- hinmanj, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Lol, I was Kent Benson's neighbor in high school. He was in the NBA that long and lives in a random house in Indiana? lulz
- rexrep, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2What about Andrea Bargnani?
- inefekt, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1ummm yeah the bells started ringing when I read his name on the list that you obviously didn't read :-/
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+2OLOWAKANDI ring a bell?
- Wildthing, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Or Golden State draft selections :(
- HelplessSEAL, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Just being a lil' anal here, but the warriors play in Oakland, CA, not SF anymore. I know that was lame, but it's true
- Youhavemyaxe, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Joel is a very solid player. He's looking great this year with Oden in the lineup.
- Touie, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Darko was the second pick in the draft and has 5.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg for his career. That's seven feet worth of bust to me.
- roguehelicopter, on 02/20/2009, -0/+1THE NBA IS BUSTED.
- afrocarter, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1not even...too early to tell
- Strongwings, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Dugg for picture 4.
- pennvneff, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Bargnani is okay but he shouldn't have been drafted number one.
- pennvneff, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Joe Smith was actually pretty good at Golden State, his numbers dropped big time after he left Oakland. I think the Timberwolves have more a beef with Joe Smith than Golden State ever had. Sam Bowie was a good player but it was the injuries that limited his career as a pro in the NBA.
It's guys like Kwame Brown, Olowokandi, and Shawn Bradley that really symbolize what a true draft bust is. Oh I forgot to add Benoit Benjamin to that list.
One to keep an eye on is Kevin Love, I still can't believe they traded OJ Mayo for that guy. -
