Michael Jordan's Son Seeks His Own Basketball Identity
chron.com — There was once a time when Marcus Jordan felt immense pressure when he stepped on the basketball floor. Considering that his father is a six-time NBA champion, that's understandable. Now, as a 17-year-old junior, Michael Jordan's youngest son is busy establishing his own identity, as perhaps one of the top prep guard prospects in the class of 2009.

- booyaman1, on 04/21/2008, -2/+29I'll definitely be curious to see how this kid does if he goes on to play college ball. We know he's got the genes - the real question is whether he's got his dad's work ethic or not.
- slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2008, -3/+10Well Jordans older sun Jeff plays for University of Illinois, and while he is good enough to play division 1, he isnt an all star by any means.
You are very right on talent not being everything.- ryan850, on 04/21/2008, -0/+31I agree on the work ethic thing... Example... My dad worked 3 jobs just to keep food on our tables and after years of hard work is now making a very comfortable living. I'm working an IT job, eating pretzels, and commenting on Digg when I should be working... And it's not even a particularly inspired or witty comment.
- tHePeOPle, on 04/21/2008, -0/+20Don't sell yourself short man, I was inspired by your comment... to go to the vending machine and get some pretzels.
- AresDiggs, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7it's comments like these that keep me coming back to digg
- listrophy, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Jeff didn't even get a scholarship for playing at UofI. He's good, but not his father. My little brother manned up against Jeff in an AAU tournament and the verdict was that Jeff was good, but my brother had definitely played against better.

- cawpin, on 04/21/2008, -8/+1"Marcus, a 6-3, 180-pound guard from Whitney Young High School in Chicago, is in town playing in one of the premier basketball recruiting events in the nation, the 14th annual Houston Kingwood Classic."
180lbs @ 6'3"? Jeezus, dude, eat a ***** cheeseburger. That is one skinny *****.- MRintheKeys, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5Um....his father was 6'6 and his playing weight was roughly 216 in the NBA.
- Rizmaster, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Yeah, because he should totally make putting on weight his priority while being the son of a guy who's major accomplishment was jumping absurd heights/distances.
- giid, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1I'm 6'5 and around 187lb. I could stand to lose a few pounds, and start working out a bit more.
- slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2008, -3/+10Well Jordans older sun Jeff plays for University of Illinois, and while he is good enough to play division 1, he isnt an all star by any means.
- Selvo, on 04/21/2008, -19/+6Basketball has lost a lot of its spice since the times Jordan was huge. I mean things like SpaceJam where a hit back then, but now the big sport is football. He may be big within the sport, but he'll never get close to thr popularity of their dad.
- spinaltap87, on 04/21/2008, -5/+2Don't comment if you don't have anything to say, just digg or bury.
- purplehaze420, on 04/21/2008, -7/+1I think most basketball fans would disagree.
For me, I didn't follow ball back then but do now.... and spacejam??? wasn't that Shaq??- smackafiyah, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Nah, it was Jordan
- thelock65, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1shaq was in Kazaam or something though
- mobilehavoc, on 04/21/2008, -4/+27Going to especially tough having his own identity when his initials happen to also be MJ
- MRintheKeys, on 04/21/2008, -1/+9It is unfair. I mean his father set the unrealistic expectations for ANY basketball player, let alone his own flesh and blood.
- vexingmodstwo, on 04/21/2008, -2/+49Damn, I feel old.
- rishid, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post.
- Rendonsmug, on 04/21/2008, -8/+2Talk about living in a shadow. I hope he does well playing college ball and goes on to the NBA. On a different note, I also hope he also gets a good degree while in college, because it saddens me when people go straight to sports and skips the school work. Especially if they get a serious injury later.
- pmuse, on 04/21/2008, -2/+4You can get a huge contract being a top prospect, and sometimes your luster goes down or you get an injury in college.
So it makes sense that people would take the millions of dollars. - slvrbullet87, on 04/21/2008, -0/+7Because his dad couldnt help him out if he blows his knee in the NBA? I know it wouldnt be as good as him making his own money, but it isnt like he would be ***** like some of the other guys.
- Aitese, on 04/21/2008, -0/+9Lol...like the son of Micheal Jordan is worried he'll be short of money in later life.
- chrisaug18, on 04/21/2008, -0/+10You can get a degree anytime, right? You can only play professional sports while your young and healthy...so doesn't it make sense to do what you love while you can?
- pmuse, on 04/21/2008, -2/+4You can get a huge contract being a top prospect, and sometimes your luster goes down or you get an injury in college.
- Synapse84, on 04/21/2008, -8/+5must be hard to follow in the footsteps of a legend... especially when it's your dad... hopefully we'll see another Jordan on the NBA floors.
- rpgmaker, on 04/21/2008, -2/+5There's already one: Kobe Bryant. He is close to be anyways.
- Cerebral, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Followed by LeBron... closely I might add.
- rpgmaker, on 04/21/2008, -2/+5There's already one: Kobe Bryant. He is close to be anyways.
- Ironage, on 04/21/2008, -12/+10He will never be as good as his father :^)
- toconnor, on 04/21/2008, -2/+9Not sure why you're being dugg down. You are correct unless Marcus becomes the greatest basketball player EVER. Which we all know isn't going to happen.
- blinktude, on 04/21/2008, -2/+3thats what mrs. jordan said!
- Blitzwing84, on 04/21/2008, -8/+5Well, his dad didn't make the high school team until his junior year, so who knows what could happen.
- rpfinley, on 04/21/2008, -1/+4Completely wrong, he didn't make the varsity team, its a big difference.
- Blitzwing84, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Bah, as far as I'm concerned the varsity team represents the high school team. That's why letters are only given out to them and local papers only report on varsity. At my school, we had freshman and JV teams, but those were only viewed as training grounds for varsity teams.
- ejrizo, on 04/21/2008, -8/+1MJ (Marcus Jordan) #2 FTW!
- gen2ux, on 04/21/2008, -9/+4Never gonna happen. For him it's sad but true.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 04/21/2008, -5/+25oh god, not SpaceJam 2!
- jnava121, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2and new hit singles from r. kelley i believe i can fly , be the best statutory rapist!!!
- stuffradio, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Wasn't that a NIke commercial?
- mdoerr, on 04/21/2008, -6/+1His older brother Jeff is a walk-on at Illinois -- Markus is supposed to be much better. Safe to say he's getting a scholarship but like mike? Doubtful.
- Aitese, on 04/21/2008, -3/+1Does he really need a scholarship? I'm sure MJ23 could afford to pay full price for whatever college he gets into.
- boredsam, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1I seem to recall a similar story w/ Master P's son getting a scholarship. I also wonder if Patrick Ewing's son got a scholarship.
- Aitese, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Well according to one of the comments one of his sons DID get a scholarship...but handed it back so someone who needed it could have it. Class act.
- mdoerr, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2Any sources?
- mdoerr, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Yes. And yes.
- Aitese, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Well according to one of the comments one of his sons DID get a scholarship...but handed it back so someone who needed it could have it. Class act.
- boredsam, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1I seem to recall a similar story w/ Master P's son getting a scholarship. I also wonder if Patrick Ewing's son got a scholarship.
- mdoerr, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1The importance of a scholarship -- you geniuses -- is that it means you are talented enough to play on an NCAA Div. 1 team, its not an issue of the money. From what I know Jeff wasn't offered a scholarship -- show me otherwise.
- killakanoski, on 04/21/2008, -1/+0Jeff was offered scholarships at Valparaiso and Illinois State, so he was offered a scholarship.....just not to Illinois.
- mdoerr, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Thank you for missing the point.
- killakanoski, on 04/21/2008, -1/+0Jeff was offered scholarships at Valparaiso and Illinois State, so he was offered a scholarship.....just not to Illinois.

- dirtypenguin, on 04/21/2008, -5/+5His other son, Jeffrey, is a Freshman and plays at University of Illinois as a walk-on. He saw some decent minutes during his first year and should be a solid (but not great) player. He doesn't have his dad's height, but he can jump out of the gym.
- chadddada, on 04/21/2008, -5/+4Good Luck!!! His older brother is also playing college ball now and is 'just ok'.
- Acronym, on 04/21/2008, -6/+0cut the crap, enough kids out there whose dreams have been ruined by basketball
- Ryan2845, on 04/21/2008, -2/+4He isn't ranked very highly by the college scouts (2 star recruit),and not even close to a top recruit for 2009. Pretty similar story to his older brother Jeffrey it looks like.
- GIACOMOSAN, on 04/21/2008, -5/+0Joe Pesci: 'Marcus, I am your father'. UNLUCKY
- bigervin, on 04/21/2008, -3/+20Jordan's oldest son, Jeffrey, just completed his first year playing basketball at the University of Illinois. He was given a scholarship by the school, but gave it back so that they could give it to a player who needed the money. Like his brother, he lacks the height of his father. He was not a starter, and didn't see a lot of playing time early in the season. He definitely is extremely quick, and will prove to be a good player...but great?...we'll see.
- killakanoski, on 04/21/2008, -0/+3Jeff was never offered a scholarship at U of I, the only schools that offered him scholarships were Valparaiso and Illinois State. Jeff did receive an "academic" scholarship but that's about it.
- Jpantoga, on 04/21/2008, -14/+16I know many people that go to school with Marcus, and he's the type of player who practices his autograph in class. Apparently he's a huge d-bag.
- boombye, on 04/21/2008, -1/+13I know some people who aren't going to be famous, who do the same when bored in class, instead of doodling, they might try and improve their signature. Sorry, but I'm digging you down for calling someone a d-bag when that's not even a good enough reason. You seem like one to be honest.
- Asianwaste, on 04/21/2008, -2/+3I grew up going to the same school as Jared Payton. The kid wasn't so much a douche bag. I just remember one moment where the kid was trying to piss in the urinal from like 6 feet away. Yea that's right, I saw some famous person's son's *****.
Anyways, I remember the kid being pretty good at basketball but don't have a single memory of him ever touching a football.- mrzack, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1was it Walter Payton prep school?
- Asianwaste, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2No, Grove Avenue, then Barrington Middle School
- mrzack, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1was it Walter Payton prep school?
- miaheatfan, on 04/21/2008, -1/+2I went to school with Bob Gibson's son when I used to live back in Bellevue, Nebraska. Bob Gibson actually lived 5 houses down from me. I was a pretty big ***** back then, but even I was impressed with the level of his son's douchebaggery. I guess like father like son is true.
- flair1, on 04/21/2008, -3/+5mike has lots of other kids by other women. maybe they will be stars too
- Mootabolife, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2Maybe they already are?
More likely that one of Wilt's kids is a star if you play by percentage.
- Mootabolife, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2Maybe they already are?
- Pr0fess0rX29, on 04/21/2008, -1/+12Sequels are never as good as the original.

- tomjunlee, on 04/21/2008, -5/+2Before I read this, I was thinking, Michael Jordan had a son??
- mrzack, on 04/21/2008, -5/+1Talent skips a generation.
- JGUSMC7, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4Props for trying to stand out on his own....and good luck....he has quite a bit of a legacy built into his name.
- DoctorGumbo, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1The glasses, headband, goatee look apart from looking silly, make him look older than his dad.
- salinemist, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1He'll suffer from Axel Merckx syndrome for sure.
- polarseltzer, on 04/21/2008, -3/+1Marcus Jordan: The Sean Ono Lennon of the basketball court.
- dropsOfClarity, on 04/21/2008, -2/+10His own identity?! Sorry, kid. It ain't happening. Your daddy is MICHAEL MOTHER FU***NG JORDAN!
- removesstains, on 04/21/2008, -3/+2If i was him i would rather just be Lazy and live off my Dad's wealth, cause lets face it. He'll never be good enough.
- jbatad, on 04/21/2008, -1/+0I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. This is Michael Jordan we're talking about.
- CaptainScarlet, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2Maybe those two kids should have played a different sport??
- nvisn, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4Like golf or baseball.
- Rizmaster, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1Well, baseball would have been an unwise choice.
- yaywowyay, on 04/21/2008, -0/+2hope he rocks
- schmimd04, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1Does Michael Jordan's older son play college basketball? I'm not sure if anyone knows this or not? If you do, can you please post it?
- killakanoski, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1hmmm.......you probably should read about half of the posts above you to answer your question but yes he plays at Illinois
- schmimd04, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1oh sorry, i was being sarcastic.
- killakanoski, on 04/21/2008, -1/+1hmmm.......you probably should read about half of the posts above you to answer your question but yes he plays at Illinois
- xtc46, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1If my parents were a legend in anything I would not go near it. I mean seriously, why would you put your self through being compared daily to argueably the greates person to ever play the sport?
- jetblackz4, on 04/21/2008, -0/+4A clone of MJ could not do what he did.
It is the right time and the right team and so on that allowed him to achieve feats that seem superhuman .
There will always be only one Michael Jordan.- jerrolds, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1A clone of MJ would be ***** awesome. MVP! MVP!
- nomadofthewaves, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1There can only be one!
- m0n0kr0m3, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1Men who play with balls for money!!! Meh!!! Who gives a ****?
- gkiltz, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0His best bet is to try a different sport!
Darryl Strawberry, George Foreman, and, for those of you old enough to remember Kyle Rote, all had sons who were excellent athletes, in DIFFERENT sports than their father excelled in. When dad is a superstar, and the son chooses the same sport, he will never really get out of his father's shadow and be his own man, able to build his own reputation, whether good, bad, or indifferent. He'll always be compared to his father!!
If he plays, for example Baseball, he'll be out of his dad's shadow, and be able to sink or swim on his own! - sdhar23, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Neither of the sons have the mentality that Michael did...and that plus his unbelievable talent and skill made him the player that he was. No matter how good anyone is today, no one will erase MJ's mark.
- CJD2, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I'm 17 and cant even grow a tache. He has a ***** goatee. And goggles?!
- shanamistress, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0Marcus, give it up mate - that's one loooong shadow you're playing under.
