- kevingarnett, on 11/05/2009, -1/+118It's a sad state of affairs when this even has to be an issue
- mejf2loy, on 11/05/2009, -3/+101Does anyone really care? It's a ***** shoe.
- johnwayne1, on 11/05/2009, -1/+76Extremely dumb move for Adidas, and great opportunity for Nike.
- rockforever, on 11/05/2009, -2/+59Neither did he. 0.o
- Xaevier, on 11/05/2009, -0/+54I didn't even know Michael Jordan had a son >.>
- Zarokima, on 11/05/2009, -3/+51Schools have exclusive deals with equipment vendors? ***** that, it should be up to the player what he wants to wear as long as it's regulation.
- SpyderTaco, on 11/05/2009, -2/+43Rich people with rich problems. I'm finding it hard to care.
- Tripacer9999, on 11/05/2009, -0/+38Adidas out, Nike in.
The world keeps spinning - jesburger, on 11/05/2009, -0/+27HA-YOOOOO!
- ChunkerMunker, on 11/05/2009, -1/+23And these shoes are a multi million dollar business. The Jordan Brand alone is worth hundreds of millions alone, the exposure that they receive generates revenue for them.
So yeah.... people care. - Khast, on 11/05/2009, -8/+26If I was going to a college which stated which shoes I could and couldn't wear I wouldn't go. Sponsors have absolutely no basis in my life, sure the school may care about the money...but if the school puts this kind of dress code in place just to keep a ***** sponsor...then the school really deserves to go under.
PS: Thanks for advertising how big of pricks Adidas really is... I won't buy anything made by Adidas any more. - sghod1212, on 11/05/2009, -0/+18He was told that he'd be allowed to wear Nike at UCF. It wasn't supposed to be an issue.
- txballer, on 11/05/2009, -0/+16
Greedy corporate pricks. They should have just signed the damn deal and stop whining. If he wants to wear different brand shoes that should be his choice. - sghod1212, on 11/05/2009, -0/+14Yes, even schools' main goals are to make money. Doing what's right is never prioritized over making money unfortunately.
- jks52086, on 11/05/2009, -2/+12My school had a deal with Russell to provide uniforms. I didn't play a sport at my university. That deal (or if there was a lack thereof) had absolutely no impact on me. The fact that you believe sports deals would (or maybe, should) have an impact on a regular university student at all shows the sad state of affairs at universities these days.
- gizmo12688, on 11/05/2009, -1/+11Well, the whole school is not being forced to wear Adidas...just the athletics. They gave the athletic department money for this sponsorship. But I do think this is a poor move by Adidas.
- bobsaysblah, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10I think you're misunderstanding...it's not a general dress code or anything, just shoes that basketball players have to wear for basketball. He can wear whatever shoes he wants when he's not playing in a game for the sponsored team.
- anthropodeus, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10@paulvq
same thing. - rockforever, on 11/05/2009, -2/+11What does it have to do with ego? He should wear whatever shoe he wants.
- densetsu23, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9Shooting cylinders through rectangles, now *THERE'S* a sport!
- waltpsu, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Screw Adidas and the school. These colleges make millions off their athletes and they don't see a dime beyond tuition. It's not like the kid was being paid to wear Adidas. His dad, on the other hand, IS being paid to wear Nike. Good for him to stick with family. And come on...like the school didn't know that Jordan's kid = Nike when they gave him a scholarship?
- Lynx34, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Also, if you were in that position to play college ball, you wouldn't play anywhere. Every major program is sponsored by companies like Adidas, Nike, Under Armour, Reebok, etc.
- paulvq, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Bow Wow.
- SFIndian83, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6@ Khast
***** nerd. The sponsor provides the athletes with free shoes and possibly other apparel to wear during the games. Nobody is forcing the nerdy kids who don't go outside to wear anything. Stop your whining and bashing of Adidas when you know nothing about collegiate sports or their sponsorships. - MixMastaKooz, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5To play devils advocate: what about this kids who are there on scholarship and can't afford their own high performance equipment/shoes?
- TheR3dMenace, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5Don't look a free shoe in the mouth
- badqat, on 11/05/2009, -7/+12Why didn't he choose a school with a deal with Nike? Seems that should have been at the top of his list.
- nigelmansell, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Adidas will gain more than it will lose. There will be hundreds if not thousands newscasts showing this piece of filler news piece.
besides, its' only MJ's kid, and he's going to which school? UCF? - jks52086, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4You all know if your dad had his own shoe that had a place in pop culture, you'd wear it in place of the competitor. If only personal logic worked in all aspects of life.
- troy5a, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Its actually the third largest college in the nation.
- iNoles, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4it is University of Central Florida "Golden Knights"
- nmanguy, on 11/05/2009, -4/+8Wasn't this front page like 3 weeks ago?
- fiskintl, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3youve obviously never seen like mike.
starring lil romeo. - tigerpalm, on 11/08/2009, -0/+3i love reading computer geeks comment about sports and business issues. two domains they will never understand. "greedy corporate pricks" and "schools have exclusive deals with vendors?" please, go back to commenting on stories you understand.
by the way, Nike can't "steal" UCF from Adidas. if Nike did anything to induce UCF to breach their contract with Adidas, they'd be liable of third party tortious interference of a contract. - anoobisdugg, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4I'm a Junior at UCF, I knew he went here and to be honest he's not that great at basketball but I can see why he came here. Just an fyi I haven't logged into my digg account in a while, this inspired me to though.
This deal isn't a big loss to UCF. For ***** sake, they funded an ice rink outdoors in Florida for a whole summer...I could think of a lot better things they could be spending my tuition money on. - palehorse864, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I believe that would be the tongue.
- COLDshiver, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Also, Nike wasn't interested in taking over the deal Adidas had with UCF.
- FitteMas, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Shoe is the kewlest Chinpokomon
- ampdj89, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3+1
- kooredaan, on 11/05/2009, -3/+6Well then you'd never play a college (division 1) sport. Every team has a contract for shoes, apparel, etc.
University of North Carolina has said contracts and their players wear the appropriate branded shoes and clothes while playing a game.
It's the way the world works. Don't like it, don't join a team. - Novion76, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3To be fair, that area of the campus (the Towers area and Arena) is run by UPI, not the university. That was that company's choice and cost, not UCF's.
- bobburn1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2They should show their appreciation by firing whoever told him it was alright. Read the ***** article, they stated they had received permission from an Adidas official. Which means he OBVIOUSLY asked the school first and they told him it was ok.
- TerpGod, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Then you wouldn't be going to any D1 school. Say goodbye to any chance at a potential professional career.
- bobburn1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2He didn't cost them *****. They cost themselves the contract, he obviously asked them beforehand and they told him it would be fine.
- iwillrefuse, on 11/05/2009, -2/+4Huh? This was a neccessary move by Addidas to protect any future licensing ventures. Sometimes good PR and good long-term business savvy don't go hand in hand. UCF knew they might lose the deal and...guess what? They didn't give a *****. They've now got the most recognized 3rd-rate college team in the nation, and thats a hell of a lot more valuable than anything Addidas was likely ponying up. (BTW, Sporting News...your writers ***** blow.)
- Dalif, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2God doesn't help suckers. Trust me.
- stuffradio, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I bet he's a billionaire.
- bobburn1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2If it's a good school, they give them fitted versions of the shoes (wide/narrow versions of shoes that usually do not come in different variations).
- spondie, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2and God wears Adidas.
- afrocentricpat, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3I guess we should all just go along with however the world works. Doing otherwise would be egotistical.
