- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60our king has spoken, make it so......
- krayzie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30I never knew Argentina was in Europe. Good to know
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25 Yeah, American players are me me me. European players don't try to take every shot, they know how to pass the ball around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I suppose the main question to ask about what has happened in the last 14 years to the sport of basketball is,
"Did the World get better at basketball, or did we just get *****?" - Platypus3333, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18While Michael Jordan is indeed our king, his record of making sound basketball-related administrative decisions is somewhat suspect...
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+133rd comeback already happened
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You're kidding right? Europe is not boring.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah, but the NBA has already reached into Canada... so why not keep going?
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'd suggest another tournament rather than a "merge" with other countries. I guess the costs of moving the teams back and forth from Europe to the US would be very expensive (especially for European teams that do not have the fund$ that American teams have).
Something like football's "Copa Libertadores" in south America, or UEFA Champions in Europe would be cool, (and I mean real football, not american football) where the champions of the national league would go to play the European champions. This would raise the bar for national teams to look forward to playing the champions of Europe rather than limiting themselves to the US standards.
Just an idea.. maybe I'm just asking for too much.
PS. Pardon my English if I screwed up something. - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Yeah because if one European does it ALL of them do it too right?
What about Dirk Nowitzki? I don't watch basketball a lot but I have never seen him whine or "flop" around. - H3avyC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Actually Euroleague Basketball is quite popular in Europe right now. Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports all over the world.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10what, kwame brown was a bad move?
- Kurto2021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As a person who played the game i much prefer winning.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Finally! It's bad enough (or good for the NBA) that the NBA keeps "stealing" European players! There's quality out there, in every country, not just "the united states". I could name quiet a few NBA stars not from America. But the addition or reorganization of some Global Basketball league would be sweet (as long as it's not World Cup style and happen every 4 years).
Look at Football (cause i cant call it "soccer"), American players are flocking over to Europe to play.... it's the same idea, just a different sport.
But this merger, or new league is a damn good idea!
and hell, this gives Michael Jordan more teams to bet on ;-) - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hopefully it will be as successful as NFL Europe!
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7reddevil- you don't have to tell us you haven't watched a lot of basketball if you think dirk doesn't whine, we know you don't. and yes, the euros flop (along w/ the argentinans). there's a big difference when you grow up playing soccer where flops are a tradition then when you grow up playing ball at the local court/y/gym where you're libel to get your ass beat for flopping.
- isalpha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, Israel is not geographically or politically part of Europe. Turkey is generally seen as the country where the continents meet, and Israel is further from Europe than they are. Israel is sometimes put in the same group as the European countries in sporting events like football ("soccer") because of their lack of friends in the middle east.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3touché
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@maorezer
Is Israel in Europe?
I guess my Geography teacher was smoking some really good stuff then... - aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@jasz
I think Israel plays in the European confederations of international sports. They certainly wouldn't be well received in a Arab league, would they? - kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the eastmost part of europe that is considered europe is cyprus. turkey is geographically located in asia.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4not a bad idea. i think the NBA can do something similar to what UEFA and the Champions League does...
- nightsweat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@66o66o
Nah, the Europeans never win anything. Now if the Australians decide to learn the game... - RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's funny. As great as MJ was and as right as he is, the 'me me me' concept in the NBA started WITH him.
- bluepeej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In the United States, we're too focused on the highlights, dunks and passes." - says Jordan
But isn't he somewhat a reason why this happened to US basketball in the first place? Every kid wanted to play like Jordan! - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ jasz
Yes technically Israel is considered to be a part of Europe. - 66o66o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Israel is in Asia ! Europe stops a Greece my man and then some of the islands in the med!
Oh to be educated would really hurt some people! - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anyone remember the XFL? -_-
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should just have the winners of both leagues play each other, or make it like baseball. Play the majority of the games against others in the same 'league' then have a few games overseas.
- Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I thought the NBA was the National Basketball Association.
Why not start a FIBA competition in addition to the FIBA World Championships. - stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sundancekid. You're wrong. He has retired three times, he's only come back twice.
- 66o66o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just a matter of time before people give a ***** about american football in europe then they'll beat ye!
- Kurto2021, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I would prefer to see two separate leagues that then play for a World Championship. Teams from each of the leagues could either play 10 non league games per year 5 home 5 away. The only downside is getting players from the US to go to these other leagues. You would almost have to say that players play for the league of your nationality.
I just don't see any real way to make it work as far as US players playing for teams in foreign countries. You only go overseas when you don't have a choice. Free Agency would be a bitch.
The only other option is to take the champ over there and play the champ over here winner take all for a crapload of money. Money would be the only thing that would make the US players want to play. - nightsweat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flopping was INVENTED by American b-ball players. Doesn't anyone remember Bill Laimbeer?
Personally, I think the refs ought to be able to call "flopping" as a foul. - Jerky1312, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not in favor of the idea. It is conceptually wrong to have European teams to be playing in the U.S. league. They should set up a competition, that includes teams from around the glode or mainly Europe. Someone mentioned the Champion's League set up and I'd go with this type of set up. I don't mind teams from Canada, but when it becomes inter-continental, that is a little too much.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1European teams can hang with a team of young stars that have played together for a couple months, but don't you dare put them against a team like the Pistons or the Heat. That would be hilarious.
- isalpha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Acording to Wikipedia:
"The Bosporus or Bosphorus, also known as the Istanbul Strait, (...) is a strait that forms the boundary between the European part (Rumeli) of Turkey and its Asian part (Anadolu)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosporus - jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude, the MLS blows. plus, the EPL and Bundesliga have enough quality teams and players... they dont need to absorb anything -- they have enough.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who could forget laimbeer? bill may have introduced it to american basketball, but it was around in euro soccer well before that. besides, vlade divac perfected the art of the modern flop
and i'm with you on whistles for flops, but i think it should be a T - lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure American born players play in the EPL and Bundesliga but that doesn't mean the MLS will merge with them anytime soon.
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@lbytesxk
look dude, i think you're missing the point of the article and my analogy.
i'm a fan of american football / soccer. i think MLS has a few decent players, but not an entire league of quality players and teams. if MLS had enough quality players and teams, maybe the usa would be able to properly compete internationally (and i look at 02's world cup as a fluke for the usa). and if MLS had quality, you wouldnt see the McBrides and Beasley's eagerly jumping across the pond to play in a better league, with more skilled players (again, the usa has some quality, but not as much as other nations).
i feel the european countries are "stealing" usas' quality players.
now let's apply this to basketball...
i'm a fan of american basketball / nba -- i also like european basketball leagues too. i think european basketball leagues have a lot of decent players (as well as other nations). do they have enough quality teams and players to compete internationally? a few years ago i would've said NO. but now, right now, in 2006, i'd say yes... even though it's still in the "startup" phase.
but before these international basketball league talks started, you'd see tons of european and other countries top players crossing the pond (or imaginary boarders) to play in the nba -- why? because the nba teams and players are quality.
americans are still catching up to the football skills of other nations. and i'm a fan of MLS, but the quality isnt there.... yet. and look at basketball... the last time an american team dominated was the "dream team", the original "dream team", the 1992 team!!!
ever since then, the usa does f'all in international basketball competition. we're stealing some of the better european players (in basketball). period.
the european nations are stealing some of our better football players though... and maybe, just maybe if the usa's football players and teams get better, maybe you'll see a similiar merger. but i wouldnt hold your breath....
truth = 1
sarcasm = 0
honestly... just look at the state of things... the EPL/UEFA get tons of internation talnet, not just MLS people -- same with NBA -- USA's taking tons of internation talent, not just the European nations.
cheers - lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh wow johnstafari, have you considered a coaching job in England? I think you have what it takes with your amazing observational skillset
- Brickski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Australian National Basketball League includes a New Zealand team and has added a team from Singapore this season:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Slingers - whoZatGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't know much about European basketball teams. Are they based in different cities, like the US, or is there a single team representing the whole country?
The Chicago Bulls vs Germany doesn't seem comparable.
Futurama was first though - they said the same things about Amazon Girls mastering fundamentals. Why aren't they in the NBA? :o) - ashehudson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Least Europeans will never beat us at American Football......
- dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yeah I enjoy Slamball also.
- lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the payers would absolutely love that, imagine playing in Seattle one day and in Madrid 36 hrs later
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Stop calling it the EPL! No one calls it that.
It's 'The Premiership' or the 'English Premier League'
Thank you -
