- DickyT83, on 05/01/2008, -0/+27.735 win percentage. What a dumb move. Actually the dumb move was getting rid of an amazing up-and-comer like Devin Harris for Jason Kidd.
- Foodstamp81, on 05/01/2008, -0/+13Count me in who also thinks bad trades and not Avery were the reason for the Mavericks problems. Dallas went from one of the deepest teams to the oldest within a year it seems. Also unrealistic expectations of J.Kidd coming in and winning a championship when they only have him couple of months.
- DickyT83, on 05/01/2008, -0/+9Amen dude, Diop is a ***** monster around the glass and Harris has a solid 10-15 years left in him. Kidd isn't necessarily a terrible player, he's just gettin up there in age. When he retires in 3 years, and Harris is averaging 20/5/10 a game in NJ, Cuban's gonna be kickin himself.
- VeryBoredNow, on 05/01/2008, -0/+9Jason Kidd ... LMAO!
- dizturbd2, on 05/01/2008, -1/+10Too bad it was Cuban that had a hard on for Kidd. Avery didn't want the trade. I would have much rather kept Devin Harris and Diop. Makes me sad.
- FriedTurkey, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7Stupid. Who they going to hire - Isaiah Thomas? Give Larry Brown another tour of duty. Unless Avery was responsible for the Jason Kidd trade he probably should have stayed.
- BeforeSputnik, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6No real need to read the article. All the info is in the headline.
- TJ22, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6whoever initiated the kidd trade needs fired. what a bonehead move.
- billiamboy, on 05/01/2008, -1/+6the main problem lyes with the fact that avery is a defensive coach while the mav players are predominantly a jump shooting team. I think it was kind of the plan to get rid of avery after the trade because cuban and donny decided to pick up kidd to open up better shots for players like dirk, terry, or stack. you're not going to be able to make shots if your coach is telling you DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE.
I'm going to miss the little general though. - Quick2822, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5Send him over to Chicago please.
- waltpsu, on 05/01/2008, -1/+5You sure he wasn't fired for smacking his players in the nuts? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLV3a4CgYLE
- holyreality, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4I bet mark cuban isn't happy.
- mlvassallo, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Avery was the only think I liked about the Mavs. Oh well. He will find a job elsewhere with no trouble.
- hybridcreation, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4Agreed. They traded a young talent with loads of potential for a 35-year-old who could never shoot.
Great idea, Cuban. - TJ22, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3yeah set to not make the playoffs for the next 10 years.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Actually watching Howard play in those 5 games, I wouldn't miss him if he was gone either. What was he in game 5, 3 for 16 from the field? Pathetic. Him and Stackhouse need to pack it up.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Yeah I loved Diop in the playoffs the last 2 years, especially last year. He was fun to watch and he got alot of time on the court against Golden State. It still wasn't enough but it was cool to see a big man making plays and even shooting a few times.
- ProjectGSX, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Yeah, he did a bang up job in Phoenix. Atleast the Mavs will bring in another coach who knows how to lose to the Spurs.
- ProjectGSX, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Avery lost control of the team. Josh Howard in particular was helpful in getting Avery ousted, with his pot smoking comments and nightclub party after game 4. When the coach loses control of the team, he has to go. Doesnt mean it was his fault, doesnt mean he isnt a good coach, but its over at that point.
- jswaby, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2This move certainly shocked me. The Raptors should consider hiring him in some roll.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Getting rid of Dirk would not be a smart move, considering there aren't more than 9 better players in the entire league. Getting rid of Avery was a good choice for them. They are a high-powered offensive team and Avery limited the way they play too much when he was there.
Any chance they can get D'Antoni? - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2What kind of roll, a dinner roll, a rick roll?
- thebigsix, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2No, it's STUPIDISM!
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Hope Avery finds a nice soft landing in Chicago.
- silicongat, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2.735 win percentage... Avery's going to have a lot of sweet job offers!
- ihavebeenseen, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2and Daniels... Why not keep that team together that went to the finals. So what that AJ was out coached by Riley. I am guessing that Riley and Jackson were out coached in their youth too.
- darthpaul88, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2larry brown is with the bobcats now. del harris, who is already on the payroll, could take the job. maybe jeff van gundy, mike fratello or rick carlisle.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -1/+2D'Antoni, hopefully. :-)
- poopmasta, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Last time I checked defense wins championships (Spurs, Celtics, Bulls, Pistons). The Hornets have a lot of jump shooters and they play good team defense. Defensive effort has nothing to do with soft half court, predictable offense, no ball movement, jump shooting teams making low percentage shots against teams who have good perimeter defenders.
- hybridcreation, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Yeah, getting rid of their 2 best players is a GREAT idea.
- Depthfunction, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1AJ is quite young (and, when he was hired, inexperienced) compared to most NBA coaches. I'd like to see AJ take an assistant coaching job somewhere in the league. Let him learn some more about coaching and then he'll be ready to take the top spot again.
- billiamboy, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1stack is my favorite player on the team but even he didn't show up to play. the only people that really showed "effort" was dirk, terry (except his D), and bass (who should have seen the ball much more but we were too focused on getting late/forced jump shots)
- basketballsense, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1i heard isiah is looking for a job...
http://basketballnonsense.blogspot.com/2008/05/dal ... - inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1After Chicago's season, it'd be a nice place for him to end up. I think Avery could do much better with a younger team, the Mavs are becoming some kind of Cocoon-ish retirement community team now. Next year they'll get Larry Byrd out of retirement to replace Dirk.
- 3tcp, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1The only thing I have to say about Avery Johnson is that guy's mouth is freakin' huge. Just enormous. He pops clementines like they were bite-sized oranges.
- OfNumbers, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1About time.
- jankind, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1This is a really good point but I think it's possible to come back from that. Take my Sixers for instance. Mo Cheeks lost control of that team soon after he started and you could tell by watching them play every...painful...game. But as soon as they removed the two pampered superstars (AI and Webber) he turned it around. They had one of the best records in the NBA for the second half of this season and although they are barely a .500 team, Mo got an extra year thrown on his contract a few months ago. (Expectations are MUCH lower here than in Dallas, we are thrilled to be watching the Sixers in early May)
- brjndr, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I didn't even click to read the article, but I did click to read the comments. Sometimes you want to see what other people think.
- billiamboy, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1agreed.. defense wins games. but 35% shooting percentage doesn't DESPITE the defense you play. we play good defense... and we could play better if we were excited about winning. but we really need to focus on our strengths as well.
- fictionalOne, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Or, better yet, get Shaq and Motumbo.
- ChanM, on 05/01/2008, -2/+2The Mav's were simply out played and too old to handle the Hornets. Bringing in Jason Kidd in a predominately young western conference is a horrible idea and it showed. Dirk has no interior game and once that jumper doesn't fall he has nothing else. Jason Terry thinks he's the **** but he's old and can't guard any of the PG in the west. Josh Howard is a pothead and probably one of the main factors why they lost as he didn't do much the entire series. Finally the Mav's do not have a deep bench other than Stack.
- poopmasta, on 05/01/2008, -1/+1D'antoni is Don Nelson with less defense
- footodors, on 05/01/2008, -3/+1Avery always seemed out of place as a coach. Maybe it's that babyface
- WillNavidson, on 05/01/2008, -12/+4Now, get rid of Dirk and Josh Howard, and the Mavs are set.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -11/+2racism
