- divinediva, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7 It's not too simplistic at all.
- Schpamm, on 10/01/2008, -0/+7So what did he do? He was a leader in the lockerroom when he played for my San Antonio Spurs. Even Dennis Rodman admitted in his autobiography that Avery Johnson was the only one not scared in that infamous NBA semi-finals in (2004?) when the Spurs choked to the Rockets and the inevitable Finals MVP, Hakee Olajuwon. Was his style to tough and grating for NBA players? They've always seemed like babies to me. Football coaches can still be tough screamer types, but it seems like NBA players revolt quickly if they play for that type of coach. (See John Calipari)
- anarchyinthekr, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7apparently not following close enough to know he's already been fired for a while
- macballer30, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6Sometimes Cuban should just keep his mouth shut. Why throw Avery under the bus after the fact? Unnecessary.
- browwiw, on 10/01/2008, -2/+8Why does Mark Cuban have to fire the cigar chomping Marine sergeant from the Halo series?
- timla, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Anyone else think this is complete horse ***** on the part of Cuban. He get up there, blames the players for having to fire Johnson, but cant or wont provide any details about who. This is going to lead to a feeding frenzy by the press trying to find out who complained. This is piss poor management. Fire Johnson, then keep you big yap shut, take the heat from the press, say things like "He was not a good fit" or "We felt Mr Johnson would have better opportunities elsewhere" etc. Why air dirty laundry for no dam reason. Be a man. What a prick.

- Branchex, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4The article didn't give a reason for why the coach and players didn't get along. The paper didn't think to ask that?
- Jerky1312, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Most of the Maverick have become spoiled over the years, due to the comfortable locker room setting Cuban has set up for them. Avery Johnson is an old schooled, hard nosed coach, as that was his style of play. He's strict on the team, so they succeed. I really can't blame Cuban for firing him at this point, he's really in a tough situation, where if he keeps the coach, most these spoiled players are going to make a stink throughout the year. That said, he deserves most of the blame for the situation reaching this point. Steinbrenner took care of his ball club, gave them everything they needed in the locker room, but he was also very demanding of them and would not allow the situation to reach what it has in Dallas. Avery Johnson will coach again and he will be a winner, I don't know if I can say the same thing about the Mavericks.
- diggstown, on 09/30/2008, -4/+8I hear Avery Johnson could have kept his job it he had only bought a go-cart.
- liljay2k, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Or Else!
- Sroek, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3He's been fired...
- callinthelaw69, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3It sucks for Avery Johnson but unfortunately the players really left Cuban with no choice. Coaches are obviously infinitely important, but nothing is more important than the players, and in a league where probably over 50% of the players are pompous ***** who care for nothing but themselves, ***** like this is gonna happen.
- plopper, on 10/01/2008, -0/+3americanpsycho joined Digg on September 14th, 2008, he's friends with Mr. Babyman and he's dugg over 6900 stories. Nah, nothing suspicious about that at all.
- Feraldr00d, on 10/01/2008, -0/+2First of all, your comment was beyond ignorant, vile and repulsive. However, you failed to even use correct grammar, moron. You're = you are. Welcome to my ban list. Oh, and you've been reported.
- RiMac, on 10/01/2008, -1/+3I HATE the Mavs, but even I love Avery Johnson. :(
- StolenLamp, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Um, both of your scenarios were the same...
- Snoosy, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1That was an open palm ball masher. Ouch. Hate to see what he does to them in the showers.
- Juncti, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1I think part of it also goes to the size of the rosters. You might have some players resenting the hard nose attitude on a football team, but on a 53 man roster, that can be a very small percent. You get 5 or 6 players on an NBA team pissed at you and you're looking at 50% or more of your roster hating you and not wanting to do what you're telling them. Carries a little more weight.
But yeah, I also agree that NBA seems to create more of the spoiled baby attitude. Perhaps because of that. - tjallen, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Is americanpsycho the new Brian Cuban? Without even looking at his profile I've noticed every Cubs/Cuban article I read on the front page is submitted by americanpsycho, when it used to be by Brian Cuban. Way to get around the ban! (Just my theory). My apologies if I'm wrong, it's just a trend I've been noticing. I thought he learned his lesson:
http://www.briancuban.com/confessions-of-a-banned- ... - scoottie, on 10/01/2008, -1/+2i hate Cuban with a passion but who the ***** cares what the players want. Lets see ... he keeps Avery and they don't play, their stats go to hell and no other team wants them. Or he keeps Avery and they ask to be bought out they retire to get out of their contract (which the NBA still has a right to bind them to) and other teams wither tell them to keep crying like babies or pick them up for half their current contract. I dont see any way for the players to win this.
NBA stars (all of them not just the Mavs) get paid a ***** ton to play a game. They need the be humbled once in a while. This is why fans still dream of the good old days of the 80's and earlier. - bbatsell, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Uh... someone who wants their team to succeed?
- StolenLamp, on 10/01/2008, -0/+1Where have you been?
- RiMac, on 10/01/2008, -0/+11994...
Also, Pro footballers are not any more likely to take ***** from tough coaches (See Nick Saban). - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -2/+2What difference does it make?
The story isn't about Brian Cuban, it's about Avery Johnson and the uncomfortable situation the Mavs were in because of a dope-smoking point guard who doesn't pledge his allegiance to the USA. What the hell does Brian Cuban have to do with any of that? - tjallen, on 10/01/2008, -1/+1The difference, is that Brian Cuban is banned and is no longer allowed to digg or submit articles. It's about the supposedly real Digg experience, the most recent bans, scripting, and the complete BS that shouldn't be a part of Digg. This story was submitted by americanpsycho, therefore it is directly related to him, and my above comment. If you're unaware of Brian Cuban, his banned Digg account, and his brother, you're missing the point.
- Jeffler, on 10/01/2008, -2/+2I'm John Smith, I'm totally unique
- warEagllzz, on 10/01/2008, -0/+0Every sport has a team owner that is way too visible and runs his mouth off.
Mark Cuban, Jerry Jones, the Steinbrenners, the Liverpool guy... - SkinnyPuppy, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2I see what you did there.
- ZenFu, on 10/01/2008, -4/+2Anybody else see the name "Avery Johnson" and instantly think of Halo?
Good ol' sarge. The baddest ***** in the entire UNSC. - nalen33, on 09/30/2008, -5/+2Man they should really fire him then...
- Gnar04, on 10/01/2008, -5/+1a new coach isnt going to help them win. they just suck.
- Bukowsky, on 09/30/2008, -7/+2As a Rockets fan... I wouldn't mind seeing Avery Johnson fired. I personally believe that he's a good coach, but I don't follow the Mav's close enough to know.
- IceColdFreezie, on 09/30/2008, -7/+1Isn't Avery Johnson the guy from Halo? Sergeant Johnson?
- cgjamj, on 10/01/2008, -9/+3That headline really sucked to see. My son's name was Avery Johnson. He and his twin brother were born very prematurely and both did not survive. Avery lived the longest at 13 days. I had no idea there was a coach named Avery Johnson.
- nitsuj222, on 09/30/2008, -11/+1buried for being really old.
