- endustry, on 06/05/2009, -2/+48No worries. He probably has $25k in the ashtray of his car alone.
- phobiusdern, on 06/05/2009, -17/+56Are you kidding me?
- u8eR, on 06/05/2009, -8/+46It's called sportsmanship. You're supposed to have it, even if you're on the losing team.
- jfield1, on 06/05/2009, -2/+30It's in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- madisonskyline, on 06/05/2009, -2/+30Fine, you owe me 25K
- TobiasParker, on 06/05/2009, -2/+26All professional athletes are required to maintain a public image. That is why Pacman jones was suspended despite never being convicted of anything. Players are required to attend media events the same way office workers are required to attend meetings.
- LADIESCREVICE, on 06/05/2009, -10/+32FTA: "The internet forums and message boards have been on fire since the end of the Conference Finals, talking about how Lebron was acting like a cry baby and calling for Stern to fine the NBA’s brightest star for his actions."
Reads to me that the only crybabies are the fans. - kiantech, on 06/05/2009, -2/+23They fine any player for this reason, Lebron is no exception.
- TobiasParker, on 06/05/2009, -4/+23It's 25k, it is a token fine so the NBA can show it follows its own rules but one that doesn't affect Lebron in any way. Win Win for everyone.
- jawni, on 06/05/2009, -2/+19The ironic thing is that there was more of a media frenzy over the fact that he didn't talk to any media on the way out.
- TeeBaagz, on 06/05/2009, -8/+23I agree that Lebron is a crybaby and sore loser. Even boxers who get knocked the ***** out get up and congratulate their opponent and shake hands. It's called maturity. I thought Lebron was mature but apparently he's not.
I don't agree with fining him for that, however. Sportsmanship should be an unspoken rule... not small type in a ***** contract.
That said, grow up Lebron. - jfield1, on 06/05/2009, -6/+17It's not like $46, it's pretty far less, actually. Thank you law of diminishing marginal utility.
And you wouldn't bitch about a $46 fine if you were making $50,000? If it doesn't bother you losing $46, feel free to paypal it to me. - flaminglips, on 06/05/2009, -1/+12If he were on the winning side, he would have been completely fine with shaking hands at the end of the lengthy, hard fought series.
- kjones555, on 06/05/2009, -2/+12"Lebron will win plenty of Championships when he and Dwayne Wade become Knicks in 2010"
That's some wishful thinkin' you doing there kiddo. - u8eR, on 06/05/2009, -3/+12$25,000 is nothing for LeBron. That's less than one-hundredth of a percent of his annual salary according to Forbes (0.092%). It would be like giving someone who makes $50,000 a $46 fine.
- lordmike, on 06/05/2009, -2/+11Well, if he stays in Clevleand, that prediction will come true... The city is completely cursed when it comes to sports.
- anchor, on 06/05/2009, -6/+15He has every right to feel cheated. The rest of the cav's team really ***** him over.
- copypastry, on 06/05/2009, -5/+13lebron is french for "the bron"
- flaminglips, on 06/05/2009, -1/+9If players decided to skip out on the conferences after every game they lost, the NBA would lose the money and publicity they get from being on ESPN, sports pages, etc.
It seems harsh considering the situation, but it's in their contracts. - ryanand80, on 06/05/2009, -1/+9As a competitor, you're not exempt from showing sportsmanship. I thought Lebron was better than this, but he's just reinforcing that stereotype of pompous NBA cry babies. Guess we'll have to wait till March 2010 to see some real competitors.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -2/+10u8er was just putting the amount in perspective for the rest of us who don't make millions a year. No need to be a douche about it.
- shdwfx, on 06/05/2009, -4/+11No, we kid you not.
The thing to understand here is that the NBA is about business; like most other US pro leagues too.
The corporate image that the NBA pursues is that of easy going, friendly athletes and sportsmen, who always have time to talk to their fans, especially the young ones, and all want to be good role models.
Yes, of course that's pretty silly and fake, but it's a corporate goal of the NBA, and they go after it. This is what you sign up for when you join the NBA.
As a side note: this "top league as a business" thing appears to be a US oddity. I don't think many other countries put such a hefty amount of business ***** into their top leagues. - u8eR, on 06/05/2009, -0/+7And I don't make $50,000 a year.
- x713, on 06/05/2009, -6/+13Wow you guys. This guy gets paid millions of dollars out of High School and has played in the league for the past 6 years. You would think he would learn sportsmanship by now. Everybody else does it. It is called respecting the other players. It has nothing to do with feelings. If he can take all this ridiculous money, you would think he would go along with the rules that have a good meaning behind them. He is a role model whether he wants to be or not. That is what he signed up for and gets paid over the top money for. This is a slap on the wrist, as well as it should be.
- gwhenning, on 06/05/2009, -1/+8What temper tantrum are you guys referring to? Did he throw anything? No. Did he scream and yell? No. He went into the locker room, changed and went home.
Personally, I love the fact that he was too upset about losing the right to play in the finals after such a terrific season to speak to the media. It shows he has heart. It shows he WANTS to win. Too many players seem to only play so they can make money. They don't seem to care about winning, just a paycheck. This is part of the reason so many people watch college ball over the NBA.
I don't think he should be fined. He could have scheduled a conference call with the media and said, "I wanted to win so badly, and when we didn't it was too much for me to face the media."
If he's a role model, then why should the model be, "Don't worry kids, not winning is nothing to be upset about, go ahead and lose. Everything will be OK as long as you're cheerful on the way out."? - suprememilo, on 06/05/2009, -1/+7Why would you wish that upon him he seems like a pretty cool guy unlike many other NBA players.
- TomGfromCanada, on 06/05/2009, -2/+8He was sad :(
- mastercosby, on 06/05/2009, -1/+7I'm pretty sure it's part of their NBA contract to attend press conferences/talk to media.
- iamvahe, on 06/05/2009, -2/+6He's generally a good guy and has never done this before. I can see him being really upset after such a bad series and not wanting to discuss anything. Not a big deal.
- Jrr6415sun, on 06/05/2009, -1/+5The rule is always $25K for not talking to the media. He knew he would be fined that much when he made the decision to get on the bus and not talk to the media. I know he doesn't care, and I don't blame him for wanting to just go home after losing a series that meant a lot to Lebron and all Cleveland fans.
- deweyhewson, on 06/05/2009, -6/+10Good! Teach this prima donna some sportsmanship.
I have absolutely nothing against Lebron James' skills - and obviously he has immense talent - but the guy is more in love with himself than Narcissus. - SSPink, on 06/05/2009, -1/+5Too bad, if you're willing to shake the guys hands after you beat them, then you had better be willing to shake their hands when you lose. Do you think the teams that he beat wanted to shake his hand? Do you think they were happy they didn't get to move on to the next round?
It's like Rashad Evans said after he had just lost his belt to Machida, "You just gotta take it how you give it". You have to act like a professional when you win and when you lose. You don't measure character by how people act when everything is going great, you measure character by how people act when the chips are down.
He's still a young man and he has time to grow and to learn from this, but the people that excuse his childish behavior aren't helping. - rhythmchanges, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3He loves himself more than Narcissus?
- rhythmchanges, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3Ahhh... I can see by the link you posted that you are very informed. Way to site your source.
- darladoon, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3lebron made 25 million last year, so 25 thousand isn't too bad
lebron will feel bad for about a minute, then move on... - inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+3These guys aren't just out there playing street ball with people following them around. They're playing in a highly organized arena constructed for the public's entertainment as a means to make money. It's part of the game. They are product.
- AmericanGunner, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2since microphones
- dank123, on 06/05/2009, -3/+5he snubbed the media so he could go cry in the locker room. He's still acts like a highschool kid in my book..
- urbanarson, on 06/05/2009, -11/+13Lebron will win plenty of Championships when he and Dwayne Wade become Knicks in 2010. They'll be Jordan and Pippen for the second decade of the new millennium.
The fine is *****. I wouldn't have talked to the press either. How do I feel? How do you think I feel? Bad bitch, real bad. - BrawndoMan, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2Being a class act is when you do the right thing when things aren't going your way. It's easy to be all smiles and giggles when you're on top.
- BrawndoMan, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2I can't believe David Stern apologized for him. He is officially the bron's bitch now.
BTW, the last "class act" of LeBronze's caliber to walk off the court was Isaiah Thomas. I'll just leave it at that. - Konformitee, on 06/05/2009, -3/+5This isn't a ***** game, it's his career we're talking about. It's one thing to shake hands when you're in Little League and everyone gets a trophy and ice cream after the game whether they win or lose, but it's an entirely different thing when you've lost the NBA finals and multimillion dollar endorsements and your future salary in the NBA is in question because you failed to deliver the championship.
We need to stop ***** pretending professional athletes are only separated by your 12 year old playing the same game by the fact that they made $12 million that season. How would you like it if your ***** competitor won a big contract that you were trying to get for the past year... would you walk up to him and congratulate him? No, you'd go pout and drink yourself to sleep. - kinseyincanada, on 06/05/2009, -3/+5do you complain when you get a $60 parking ticket?
- deviouskoopa, on 06/05/2009, -3/+5He has a point a point.
- inactive, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2it actually is ironic because he wanted there to be less media regarding the subject. instead, there was more.
- dstown, on 06/05/2009, -2/+4Give him a break…i don't know why everyone is on his case. The guy has been a class act since high school, despite being under a microscope. The guy gave it everything he had and didn't have too much help from his team. I'd be frustrated too.
Oh yeah…I'm sure he could care less about the fine. - Jrr6415sun, on 06/05/2009, -0/+2They are fined only if they are asked to be interviewed by the media and they refuse.. Every member of the Cavs didn't speak because the media doesn't give a ***** about most of them so they don't ask them to be interviewed.
- Misinformant, on 06/05/2009, -10/+12Props to LeBron.
David Sterns a ***** idiot. It's ***** that 'face-time' with the media is required by a greedy league anyway. Oh you lost now we're gunna shove 80 microphones down your throat and ask you the stupidest questions imaginable. They always do, sportswriters are morons. - ZonGuy, on 06/05/2009, -1/+2I can definitely judge him. The NBA players who have raped and pillaged, as you've said, do not do any of that on the court. LeBron showed where his ego's really at by the way he walked off the court. His team fought with him all year, but "The King" is obviously upset that he wasn't "served" a championship, because, after all, he is completely entitled... ***** that guy.
- BMcClure937, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1@Rain12931 : no, they are both competitors
