- gonzoceltic, on 02/23/2009, -0/+27I'll always hold this guy in high regard after what he did for Derek Fisher while Fisher was with the Jazz during the 2006-2007 season. But it was during the 2007 playoffs where I was impressed. Miller told Fisher he could take as "much time as he wanted" away from the basketball court to tend to his [Fisher's] daughter's battle with cancer. What a guy. RIP Larry Miller.
- batmanz, on 02/23/2009, -3/+27He was a good guy, but I swear he kept the Utah economy going singlehandedly.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 02/23/2009, -0/+20He died on Friday, why is this just now getting made popular? Sad to see the guy go, though. He's one of the few classy owners in sports today.
- mizatt, on 02/23/2009, -0/+13Then when Fisher asked to leave he moved him to the area of his choice so his daughter could be closer to his desired cancer specialists.
As a Laker fan I've never cared for the Jazz but this guy built a great team and organization and he deserves everyone's respect for it. - deweyhewson, on 02/23/2009, -0/+11He also had great relationships with his players, and even dealt one-on-one with Malone and Stockton and Hornacek; no agents. That was the kind of relationship they had. In this age of prima-donna sports, how many owners could have that kind of relationship with their players?
He was honest, he was fair, and an all-around good guy. He'll be missed around here. - immatellyouwhat, on 02/23/2009, -9/+18So after his legs were gone was he known as Miller Lite?
I know, I know, I'm going to hell for that : ( - sockpuppets, on 02/23/2009, -1/+9Lose 40 pounds now ask me how.
- sockpuppets, on 02/23/2009, -12/+19Here lays Larry Miller
Diabetes was his killer
Always there for the score
Until he died at sixty four - jackcrack7, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6That's not exactly true. He chose to not have it play in his own theaters but his theaters are very much the minority in Utah. I think he owns 3 and the nearest to me is about 40 minutes away.
- aforsberg, on 02/23/2009, -2/+8Buried, blocked, and reported. The Internet does not need your kind.
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7This happened on Friday. I love how digg posts "Breaking News" slower than the newspaper, telegram and/or pony express.
- d3dm, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Who cares? They were his theaters to run as he sees fit.
Why do people get so bent out of shape when a private business decides to lean to one side or the other of the political spectrum? It's a *private* business, people. No one is forcing you to watch the movies there.
You want to make a statement against it? Don't give them your dollars. You act as if it's the end of the world. Sheesh. - shakeyjake, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6He was a bright articulate business man, and one of the last fan-turned-owners in professional sports. As I recall when he bought his first stake in the Jazz the cost was equal to his total net worth(8mm at the time). Now that's a All In move.
On the other hand there was the Brokeback Mountain incident where he had it pulled from his theatres. He claimed it was a moral decision but it was probably a bit of homophobia.
I've also heard many first hand accounts of his private generosity. - deweyhewson, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Yeah, heaven forbid a guy be entitled to his opinion and his right to do what he wishes with his property.
Miller was a class act, and he'll be missed in Utah, even by many of those who disagreed with that decision.
Of course, those people are the ones who believe tolerance doesn't just mean tolerance of one's own views. - kolobcreek, on 02/23/2009, -2/+7I never went to many games but I really did enjoy his Movie Theaters. He was a great business man.
- devnullDood, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4Yes you are!! But Ill be there with you because I laughed my ass off.
- sekseebeast, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4Maybe he hates Jake Gyllenhaal and Sean Penn. I know I do.
- dwtc, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5He owned some theaters, but he didn't own anywhere near every one, or even half. I'm sure Cinemark and all the other theater owners had their own options. I really didn't pay attention to whether or not it Brokeback was playing here in Utah at the time, I wasn't really interested. I don't really know about how available Milk is.
- Hoffmangler, on 02/23/2009, -4/+6Mr. Miller was a mixed bag. On one hand, he donated a lot of money to education causes in Utah. On the other he took it upon himself to be our personal morality police and banned "Brokeback Mountain" from the movie theaters he owned (While gladly playing the "Saw" series, "My Bloody Valentine", "Hostel" etc etc). He was also a car salesman, the most unapologetic of the "I'm going to screw you out of your money" occupations. And all that crying on TV sheesh.
Sucks to lose a loved one. Hope his family is handling it okay. - tyrulz, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2how can everyone trash Scientology so bad, but people get mad when badmouthing Mormons, I lived in Utah, Mormons are crazy. And ***** you anyway, internet needs free speech you dick.
Larry Miller is the same guy who banned Zac and Miri and the South Park Movie (plus others) from his movie theater.
Here's a video on your beloved Mormons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy0d1HbItOo&fea ... - conna, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Jill, Roger, My sympathies.
- bythewar, on 02/23/2009, -2/+4They wanted to build a statue of him to put by the Delta Center, but it would only come to 4' 7". They agreed to go ahead anyways since they got a great price... 30% off.
In all seriousness, he was a great guy. I mourn his loss, and I hope that his son is able to follow in his footsteps.
And that maybe the Jazz could win a championship to commemorate to him - mr_wej, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3Fisher's daughter is getting treatment from the same New York doctor that treated her while he played in Utah, Fisher ended up moving FARTHER away... that is why he gets booed.
- samyoungguitar, on 02/23/2009, -2/+4This story came out last week. Way to stay on top of ***** digg.
- AgentMull, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2All sugars gone... MANUALLY. I've got to lose 20 more pounds, or I'll never be pretty!
- highv0ltage, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Just because people don't approve of one's lifestyle doesn't mean that hate is involved. There are many people, especially non-mormons, who lobby against drugs and alcohol, but that doesn't mean they hate the people. Why would sexual preference be any different?
- DoctorAwkward, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Because using drugs and alcohol is a choice. Mormons hate people for who they are, not what they do.
(yes, former mormon, 4th generation) - mrogi, on 02/23/2009, -2/+3When Larry Miller shows up at the Pearly Gates there is only one way he is gonna get in. Miller will have to provide St. Peter a satisfactory reason why he failed all those years to provide Stockton and Malone with a decent center so that the Jazz could win at least one gattdam championship.
- bythewar, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1He was a bigot because he didn't allow Brokeback Mountain to be played in his cinema? Because that action made him to be a poster child for bigots?
He also didn't allow Zack and Miri Make a Porno to be played, so it's not just a thing against gays. He had, just as every business man has the right to choose what he sells. If he thinks its immoral, that's his right. But he didn't only do it against gays, and that doesn't make him a bigot. - Wildthing, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Oh yeah, I suppose that makes them chanting "cancer!" and holding one hand up over their eyes justified then.
- bythewar, on 02/26/2009, -0/+1Fisher knows that Utah fans hate the Lakers (generally). yelling "cancer" is way out of line, but I boo that man every time he steps on the court.... Just like I do to Kobe or any other Laker player.
- djtodd, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Yes, yes, yes! As the only Jazz fan in California, I must say that's right!
- zymase13, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2The words "respected businessman" were touted around town the night he died, and the flag outside the Energy Solutions Arena was immediately put on half-mast, but everyone missed the simple fact that Larry Miller was a bigot, and in an honest evaluation of his life, it needs to be addressed.
- analogissoft, on 02/24/2009, -2/+3RIP
- inigomntoya, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1Eat and Run!
- Brecourt_Manor, on 02/23/2009, -2/+2Sit and Sleep?
- Spartacusprime, on 02/24/2009, -2/+2Well, I guess they didn't still need him. Nor did they still feed him.
- Wildthing, on 02/24/2009, -3/+3I bet Jazz fans will boo him. They booed Fisher because he left the Jazz to go to a city that had eye treatment for his daughter who had a form of cancer and mocked his daughter's condition when he was at the free throw line in addition to chanting "cancer".
Seems like Miller was the only decent person in Utah for letting Fisher attend to his daughter and releasing him from his contract. - ourhearts137, on 02/24/2009, -3/+2While yes, he did many great things for the community of Salt Lake City, and the whole state of Utah for that matter, it doesn't negate the fact that he was a bigot.
You know why he's so popular? Think about it. Utah is the ONLY western state who votes consistently republican. What do republicans hate? Gays. What do Mormons hate? Gays. White Mormon republicans are the only people who would feel bad for this piece of *****.
Just because you do ton's of charity work and donations to specific causes, it doesn't make you a saint if you "hate" a certain person/group of people.
RIP indeed. - sexysara09, on 03/26/2009, -1/+0One of the few classy owners in the NBA. RIP Mr. Miller
http://www.discountedbeautyproducts.grasssod.net - SaladCactusKing, on 02/24/2009, -7/+3Beloved. Meh. Guy was an *****.

- avalokiteshvara, on 02/23/2009, -8/+3Well, it appears he isn't responsible for moving the Jazz to Utah from New Orleans, as he took over the Jazz in 1985. I always thought they shoulda changed the name once they left....
