- hydrosnowman, on 10/12/2007, -12/+67Well, if he stops flailing his arms trying to get a foul called, he'll stop getting suspended.
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50"By Accident"
- rindin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34I wish people would keep their opinions out of article titles.
Buried... - krock2883, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27ON accident?
really? i usually do things BY accident.
AHH, you beat me to it, vermerge. good call, good call... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Why was "On Accident" in the digg headline? I didn't see those words used in the actual article.
- Scoresheet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I've watched the youtube video, and whilst i agree that you do naturally push your arms up and down when you jump, in this case its pretty suspicious. its the force his arms swings down with that suggests it was deliberate.
In English football we had a player called Alan Shearer, who was one of the best headers of the ball ever. but he was also guilty on more than one occasion of using his arms whilst jumping to smack someone in the head deliberately.. In fact during the 1998 world cup, whilst David Beckham's sending off was touted as the reason we lost, it had more to do with Shearer elbowing the goal keeper just before Sol Campbell scored, meaning the goal was disallowed.
Put simply, you don't accidentally swing your arms down that hard. - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Yeah, you're right, it can't be that he keeps hitting people in the face, it must be because he's black.
#sarcasm - wintermute0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23@Disgone
I buried it 'on accident' too. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Thank you!!!!!
That one bugs the hell out of me!!!! - pardonmedoug, on 10/12/2007, -6/+221. It's BY accident, not "on accident." Read more.
2. Who gives a *****. - hazard, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21This incident makes the last one NOT look like an accident. You can see he forcefully swings his elbow down on the defender's face, just like last time. People say this is normal, but it only seems to happen to him...He's clearly frustrated in LA, or just losing in general. He clearly swings his arm sideways after shooting, no one fully extends their arm after shooting. And he hasnt done it throughout his career, just in another season he will probably miss the playoffs. You'd think hes getting paid all that money he shouldnt be such a sore loser.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IqOzVsPfM0 - Disgone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The foul was just as much of an accident as me burying this story inaccurate was an accident.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Elbow hit to the head... Accident
Elbow hit to the head... Accident

Damn, that Kobe sure is accident prone! - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Don't forget that about a week after Kobe got suspended the first time, Lebron laid out Wade by hitting him across the face, going for a steal late in the game. Wade fell, was down for a while and got back up. There was a foul called on that play as well, but the league said they never even bothered to review the play and weren't going to suspend Lebron.
So, to me, there does seem to be a little bit of a double standard going on here. Especially since they suspended Kobe both times without hesitation, but didn't even think Lebron's play (which was obviously an accident since Lebron and Wade are good friends) wasn't even considered for REVIEW, much less suspension. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"No ***** Sherlock. Maybe Wade didn't want his friend to get into trouble."
You think? Wow, what a revelation.
Unfortunately, Wade doesn't decide who gets suspended or not. The league officials do, and they are supposed to be unbiased.
It doesn't matter that Lebron was trying to foul, you can't foul someone by punching them in the face. Hell, if it was about swinging elbows, Mutombo would have spent half his career suspended, considering how many people he has knocked out, on accident. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Isnt this his second suspension this year for an "accidental" elbow to someone's face?
And no, I didnt RTA, because I saw the news this morning. - 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How about posting using proper English grammar next time? "On" accident... sheesh.
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@DvS01
DIS.... Digger Illiteracy Syndrome. - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't know, in the video, the first two times he's being pushed off balance as he shoots. If you jump up in the air and get pushed off balance it's pretty natural to throw your arms out. In the other clips (where he doesn't elbow) he's just taking jump shots with someone in front of him.
- duedermont, on 07/17/2009, -3/+9Phil Jackson(coach of the Lakers) says he will be submitting over 50 clips where Kobe, in the past, swings out his arm after he shoots, to the NBA office. Therefore Kobe shouldn't have to change the way he plays the game, but the defender should just watch out next time.
- timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8case dismissed for lack of evidence
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7@hazard
Maybe it's just an involuntary tic. You know, like George had in that one Seinfeld episode. He can't help it! - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well at least he didn't rape him after elbowing him.
- bill.clark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And in other news, grammar has gone by the wayside...
- HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It wasn't an accident when Raja Bell closelined Kobe...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVqIyl3gt4E
:-) - Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They don't tell Shaq's defenders to 'look out', cause Shaq's elbows might hit their face.
- pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed, just watch his arms on the tape:
Back... and to the left...
Back... and to the left... - tecks76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6no way that was an accident, he was trying to draw a foul and was overzealous.
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5But he did say that "Kobe was trying to draw a foul"
And I don't see anything wrong with the NBA trying to eliminate dirty plays that cause injuries.
I didnt mean to hurt him, but i did mean to swing my arm at his face. Oh, ok.. all's well. - letuescarpe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"By accident" isn't really any better than "on accident." They both sound awkward and childish. "Kobe Bryant Suspended For Accidentally Elbowing Another Player" sounds better and gives the sentence more impact.
Yes, I am a technical writer. I proofread websites for fun. - timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6exactly, it's a center-of-gravity involuntary motion... you brain says, "uh, oh -- i'm off-balance -- quick, CORRECT!" So you shoot your arm our to try and compensate for the displacement.
- fullmetal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No Kobe hater here but that was no accident. It has happened before and he got suspended for it back then too. he did the same thing to Manu Ginobli, and not defending him. GO MAVS!!!!
- timbellomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4uh... yes they do... Shaq tells them to look out, cause "The Big Diesel is going to roll through"...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If it was an accident, it wouldn't be the second time he got suspended for it. He is doing it deliberately. Notice he only has these "adccidents" whenever he is pissed off at a defender for some other reason.
It is kind of like Roger Clemens' apologists talking about how whenever he hits a player in the HEAD with a fast ball, they say "He is just pitching inside to back the player off hte plate and it slipped. Amazing how this pitcher with GREAT control only has the ball "slip" out of his hands against players who just hit grand slams against him the previous at bat, or after he just gave up a bunch of runs in an inning. - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@letuescarpe
With all due respect, if you're defending "on accident" as being equivalent to "by accident" you shouldn't be proofreading anything. It's "on purpose," but "by accident." "On accident" could be thinly defended as a regionalism, but so could the Southern "y'all" or the New York "I gotsta go get on line for a hotdog," and none should be defended as canonical English.
In fact, people can say or write whatever they want, but if a discussion of what's technically right and wrong comes up, let's try to keep some minimal standards in place for the language. - djshinodalp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Since right... now!
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14it looks exactly like the Manu ginobli hit. Once can be an accident, twice in like 40 days is kinda pushing it.
He absolutely deserved the suspension. - SiNiK, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2oops...I should read more...
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16I haven't seen this particular incident, but the previous event seemed like an accident. It seems like the NBA is out to get Kobe for some reason (and this coming from a long-time Suns fan!).
- discochew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Inaccurate headline. You can't report on someone's intention, hence why the original article doesn't.
- turnTaker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10this is bunk. the NBA made a mistake after the Ginobili incident and they had no choice but to be consistent lest they look like pushovers, so i can understand this while disagreeing with it.
i firmly believe the league is out to get Kobe. after his legal trouble, the league turned its focus to Wade and LeBron, your scandal-less, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed young superstars. they don't want to see Kobe win, they don't want him in the spotlight. and before any of you call him a rapist, he was never convicted...last time i checked that doesn't mean he's guilty in America. no matter what he does off the court, he's no doubt the best player in the world in terms of basketball skill. let there be no debate on that, regardless of whether he's a "team player" or not.
when Kobe fell from grace, the league ***** its pants because he was their golden boy. now, the league tries its utmost to make sure that there are two "faces of the league," in case one of them goes down like Kobe. Wade gets more love from the refs than any other player i've ever seen, if you so much as breathe on him wrong, he goes to the free throw line. Kobe used to be like that, now he gets called for fouls just like any other non-superstar. when Wade separated his shoulder, he was wheelchaired off the floor. i half-expected David Stern to come out there and carry him to the locker room. funny, i don't remember Gerald Wallace getting the chair when he separated his shoulder. anyways, just watch...the NBA will make a HUGE deal of Wade's return and celebrate him as a warrior who stepped up when his team needed him. and when Lebron clocked Wade with a rather hard foul, he wasn't even investigated!
i can understand the desire of the league to not allow any situation on the court that could escalate between two competitive, physically imposing, athletes in the heat of the moment. but singling out people is wrong and should be seen as such by fans. expect lots of debate and rule changes in the coming off season. - aldomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's not new, he always does it but surprisingly he got caught this time!
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe it's more like a "Get out of my face!" type of reaction after getting blocked. Not sure really, but for all I know, it could have been an instinctive reflex. I mean, I'm sure he would have learned his lesson the first time he did it if it was a voluntary thing.
- mbrutsch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thank you.
- redcard, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9I am a soccer referee who does games at a pretty decently high level.
Let me assure you, at the higher levels of their games, athletes do not do much (if anything) "by accident." They are oftentimes very much in control of their bodies, and have been doing things to get the advantage as they always have been.
Kobe's no different. - Scoresheet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Iv just noticed in the youttube video that in the non foul shots at the end, his arm stays up. in the foul shots, they come shooting down hard.
case closed. - zomgflamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this ***** used to happen all the time back in the days, hell they would even start throwing punches at each other and there would be no consequences. You would see them the next day playing. Honestly, this suspension ***** should not be applied to sport unless its for doping, they should just be fined for fights and hard fouls. By suspending Kobe, people who get screwed are the fans who paid load of money to watch Kobe play against their home team.
- MilkDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@hazard
Agreed. Once is an accident, twice is a pattern. Punishment is needed so that it doesn't keep happening. - robman8023, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Misleading opinion in title = Buried as inaccurate.
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow Raja Bell blew a bubble while guarding Kobe. That's like the ultimate insult.
