- therealrico, on 09/30/2008, -4/+21NEWSFLASH. . . NBA(ALL ATHLETES) players do and say dumb things!!! I remember in high school during every national anthem my teammate would sing his own version, that was completely disrespectful. Did he hate the government? No, he was just some clown trying to get people to laugh. Josh Howard isn't a bad person, he was unfortunately just caught being a clown, during an incredibly sensitive subject, as well as adding some nice racial overtones too it.
But you know what I don't care if a basketball player does it because he is just a young stupid kid who in the grand scheme of things doesn't matter. - sockpuppets, on 09/30/2008, -2/+15When your mom apologizes for carrying you to term.
- sockpuppets, on 09/30/2008, -0/+11I would like to apologize in advance for my next 1000 comments on Digg.
- colmatteus, on 09/30/2008, -1/+9Anytime you need to apologize for "everything in the last five months", it's not a good thing.
- haydesigner, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5When will McCain apologize for not wearing a flag lapel pin during the debate?
(Obama wore one) - anizzle, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Like when he benched himself against the Lakers last year because his order of KFC and watermelon had arrived.
- Tsumuji, on 09/30/2008, -2/+5A sports story. Did you really just try to tie the Presidential race into it?
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3No, i thinks it's because he acts like a stereotype.
- darladoon, on 09/30/2008, -1/+4"sorry, josh, you have to love the anthem, otherwise you can't play pro basketball"
welcome to the NBA - omegared, on 09/30/2008, -2/+5i do not get it. People are complaining they he should have never said what he did, but do not understand where he is coming from. Is it news to people that not everyone is treated fairly in the united states? Do you think the family of a dead soldier, that was sent their by their country, is proud to be American? Do you think blacks and native Americans are proud for how they have been treated in America, in the past?
Anyway what does it make a difference what he says, country first right? does not that mean freedom of speech? - jeebodon, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Because they want to keep their jobs?
- djholybolt, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2quit getting your panties in a bunch
- Berzerker7, on 09/30/2008, -3/+5Why the ***** do people apologize? If that was me (which it's not) and I make a controversial comment, I obviously said it for a reason and would back it up and stand by it, not apologize because it'll make me look better. I believe what I want to believe.
- secondfiddle, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I would like to see him spell apologize.
- darladoon, on 09/30/2008, -2/+4does one have to love the national anthem? any national anthem?
if so, why? - crunchdigg, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2"My agent said it could cost me money, so here I am reading the note card."
- AzureRise, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I'm burying you and the article you submitted for spam.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Along those lines....
- momedefome, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I don't buy it , he is still a ***** idiot
- partrow, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Another sports Cretin entertainer.
- kinseyincanada, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2who the ***** cares way to over react.
- kevinwiz, on 09/30/2008, -6/+7Leave it to Americans to be oversensitive to this type of *****.
- omegared, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2so what a guy is not allowed to speak up against his country? Do you think the blacks that were slaves, the women that were denied rights, all soldiers who died in the iraq war is proud to be American?
So what is it Ryan32 do you support freedom of speech, or only speech that supports your views? and should people that have been mistreated respect their country? - dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1"everything that's happened in the last five months"
That convoluted sentence really means: this happened several months ago, managed to stay silent for that long up until a few weeks ago.
BTW, side question: Why do we have to put sports players on some imaginary pedestal above normal people? Why do we value what they say/do outside of the court/arena? Obviously the team owners care, as well as his endorsers. - EndoTheGreat, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2honestly, he shouldn't have apologized, coming from a mavs fan, and and a big josh howard fan that seemed forced as hell. it wasn't a joke, you don't say something that abrasive as a joke. if that's how he feels then the beauty of America is supposed to be that he has the right to say that. or whatever for that matter. America, land of the free, home of the censored
- AzureRise, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2And I would like to yell at you in advance for your next 1000 comments on Digg. Wtf!? How could you take his side? STFU. You're obviously trolling. How could you not see how wrong this is? You're such a fanboy. Why did you even bother posting? That shows what kind of taste in music you have. OGC.
- RMoore08, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Dang, props to him, its hard to screw up that much for 5 straight months.
- mrogi, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Josh Howard's is an imbecile despite a 4 year degree from Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons produce first rate graduates like Brian Piccolo and Tim Duncan. Howard is a disgrace.
- anizzle, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3Josh Howard smokes weed, what is there not to like?
- AzureRise, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Yes, many people are not proud of their country. So they should leave? How about fighting to make it something worth being proud of? I know many people who were in the service and many who still are, who think this country's gone down the *****. They have a right to their opinion, and they have the right to live here. Living here gives them the right to have ANY opinion of their country.
- darladoon, on 09/30/2008, -2/+3bad behavior = telling the truth
sounds like some old white boys tellin' some young black boys how to......"behave". - AzureRise, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Not liking your country and not respecting those who've died for it are two different things. I'm not talking about this guy in particular.
- diemunkiesdie, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Sadly, it is the flag that he insulted that gives him the right to say such horrible things.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/30/2008, -1/+2Wow, a bit harsh, don't you think? Practice what you preach and keep an open mind to another person's opinion without spewing hatred to another person, why don't you?
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Someone thinking rationally on a subject... on digg?!
- swik, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0It's not like the government is trying to censor him. Freedom of speech doesn't mean that you have the right to say whatever you want free from consequences from fellow citizens with no ties to the government.
He is in a profession that gains money from fans. People who are emotionally invested in the game, in their team(s), and their players. When a player says something of that nature, it makes it harder for fans to get behind them and it reflects poorly (whether appropriately or not) on that player, that team, and the entire NBA. The NBA has an image problem and things like this don't help.
He has the freedom to say what he wants but other people have the freedom to criticize him for it and stop buying his jerseys and products he endorses. He basically has made it almost impossible to ever get another endorsement deal. - HayString, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BqG9kjknVw&NR=1
Listen to what the old guy says at the end of the video starting around 1:46. It couldn't have been said better. - wukillabee, on 09/30/2008, -5/+5itt: people hating on josh howard cause hes rich and young
- Ryan32, on 09/30/2008, -4/+4He should be real ***** proud that he's a citizen in a country that provides him with freedom, and allows him to make millions of dollars playing a sport he loves.
Just like anyone else, if they are "ashamed" of this country... Then get the ***** out. You ***** hypocrites cry about what happened before your lifetimes, yet you sit around enjoying all the benefits of a country you pretend to despise. People like that are the worst part about our country.
Oh, and yes. Families of Soldiers/Marines are damn proud to be Americans, because most Military families understand the sacrifice they make, and what they stand for. - Tfulp33, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0He's black, he doesn't have to respect his country. Come on people.
- springerd, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0well if you are going to say something powerful don't back down like a coward.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -2/+2What prompted this? Media day at the AA Center today?
- plasheet, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0hi ,everybody ,I am Michael pang from China ,i love NBA ,as you said Josh Howard was not a big star ,i think so ,he has so many bad habits ,i support a star who plays well and gracious after basketballcourt ,i support KOBE ,JAMES AND TRACY .
THANKS - Ryan32, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1There is "not being proud" on certain issues, and then there is utter ***** disrespect for those who died to make things better.
If you aren't doing ***** to help a cause, but want to sit around and cry like a bitch, disrespecting those who laid their lives on the line to help others.... Then get the ***** out. This ***** is living the high life getting paid millions of dollars, and doing jack ***** to help promote peace, equality or anything else across the world... But then he wants to complain and disrespect those that do? ***** him. - sockpuppets, on 09/30/2008, -2/+1You must be new here.
- t4m5t3r, on 09/30/2008, -2/+1"Josh Howard has apologized for disrespecting the national anthem"
is this is communist russia? disrespecting the national anthem? LMAO, its hard to beleive that the US is a real place some times, it realy is! - Misinformant, on 09/30/2008, -4/+3Oh, ok.
- Tsumuji, on 09/30/2008, -7/+6At first I thought it was a similar story to the one guy who had to get up and use the restroom during the National Anthem and got kicked out of the stadium. Then I read the article:
As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: "'The Star Spangled Banner' is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that [expletive]. I'm black."
...
"It was me joking around," he said.
Yeah, because joking around with a camera is a good idea, especially with a *****-tastic, unfunny joke like that one. - binky79, on 09/30/2008, -7/+6Too little, too late.
Waiting this long sounds like, "I'm sorry because everybody else says i should be." -
