- LTAnderson, on 03/05/2008, -1/+0Dude are you retarded? Have you ever heard of defensive holding?????? Look it up! Think before you correct!
- emehrkay, on 03/05/2008, -1/+3This would still be illegal in football
- blackinthmiddle, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1Uh...no it wouldn't be. Man has the ball, man gets tackled. It's not like he's being horse-collared or anything. For receivers and running backs, you can bump them within 5 yards of scrimmage. Once they have the ball, you can tackle them, again as long as you don't horse-collar them.
- discodeathopera, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2no, the correct title would be "how to play defense if you were playing hitman"
(garrote anyone?) - badrummer2121, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Horse Collar FTW!
- metalkills, on 03/05/2008, -1/+12That would be holding... definitely not how you would want to play defense....

- nicksawick1, on 03/05/2008, -7/+2...hooking up?
- CoolHandRemy, on 03/05/2008, -14/+12Only thing is - no one can defend Kobe.
- UglieJosh, on 03/05/2008, -7/+2Best pure talent of all time. I am positive he would destroy Jordan (in his prime) in a 1vs1. Nobody can ever defend Kobe, (although Jordan could NOT defend Iverson, does that make Iverson the better player?)
All around player? I might even take Kurt Heinrich over Kobe, in that regard, if I wanted a real SG.- shlemielo, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Hinrich. You could at least spell his name right, he's not that German. And no one in their right mind would pass up Kobe for Hinrich.
- blackinthmiddle, on 03/05/2008, -1/+5You couldn't be more clueless. Jordan *averaged* 50% shooting for his career. Kobe? He's yet to have ONE 50% shooting season. Jordan had seven straight scoring titles. Kobe? One. Jordan: Six MVPs. Kobe? 0 (although he'll probably get it this year). Jordan: defensive player of the year. Kobe? Never. Jordan: 6 Finals MVPs. Kobe: Yeah, that was Shaq winning all of those. Jordan lead the league in steals one year. Kobe: you get the picture.
Olympic gold (twice), scoring championships, defensive player of the year honors...Jordan had it over Kobe in EVERY area. AND, Jordan played the majority of his career when hand-checking was allowed. Guys like Iverson and Tony Parker wouldn't be nearly as affective 15 years ago. So...what criteria are you using exactly to say Kobe's better than Jordan?
That was Kobe's team who was up 3-1 against the Suns and losing. That was Kobe in game 7 taking only three shots after halftime (many players, past and present called him out on that). I don't care if you score 81 in January against the Raptors. If your team is down in game seven, do you show up? It's more important than any other stat. When the pressure is at it's greatest, how do you perform? Jordan has an entire book in this area. Kobe hasn't even written chapter one yet.- UglieJosh, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2None of your statements directly contradict mine. Yes, Jordan has the edge in all the intangibles. Jordan was the better basketball player, I never claimed he wasn't.
1 on 1 is a totally different game though and Kobe would beat Jordan in this area.
I mean, Pistol Pete was a better player than any point guard around right now (except maybe Nash) but most of them would beat Pete in a 1 on 1 game. - BigManOnCampus, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3"Jordan *averaged* 50% shooting for his career. Kobe? He's yet to have ONE 50% shooting season. "
Because he was allowed to use his hands against his defenders (and they were allowed handchecking) so most of his points had to come in the paint. Jordan had to rely on getting to the rim because if your defender can have a hand on your body, he can affect your shot before you even try one.
Kobe has a better jump shot. Jordan had a good jumper, and one that was difficult to defend. Jordan did not make impossible jumpers look routine like Kobe does. Kobe's average is worse because he rely's on a jumper more than Jordan did, end of discussion.
"Jordan had seven straight scoring titles. Kobe? One."
Wrong, Kobe = 2. Also, Jordan wasn't competing against so many excellent scorers, like AI, LeBron, etc.. for that title.
"Jordan: Six MVPs. Kobe? 0 (although he'll probably get it this year)."
Wrong, Jordan = 5, Kobe = 2 robbed from him + 1 this year (Steve Nash? Are you kidding me? He cannot play defense, neither can Nowitski. The press core should be ashamed of voting in Nash and Nowitski the last few years. Kobe has nearly been defensive player of the year each year during that span, and been a league scoring leader. )
"Jordan: defensive player of the year. Kobe? Never."
Not that Kobe never deserved it.
"Jordan: 6 Finals MVPs. Kobe: Yeah, that was Shaq winning all of those."
Jordan would not have won as many finals MVP's either had he been playing with Shaq.
"Jordan lead the league in steals one year. Kobe: you get the picture."
Different era... handchecking. Please understand this. In Jordan's era you were allowed to manhandle the man with the ball in comparison to this era where you cannot. This meant that it was easier for Jordan to get steals. Kobe stops whoever he wants to in an era where individual scoring is easier as the advantage is with the person who has the ball. You can't say one or the other was better in this department. It's a wash because of the different eras.
"Jordan had it over Kobe in EVERY area."
Especially in the area of skilled teammates. You're forgetting just how poor the talent around Kobe has been since Shaq left.
"That was Kobe's team who was up 3-1 against the Suns and losing. Kobe hasn't even written chapter one yet."
That's a lot of general hating. I like how you apply one game to his entire career. What if I did that with Jordan? Believe me he had bad games.- UglieJosh, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Glad to see there is someone else who doesn't let nostalgia and reputation be the deciding factors in this argument.
I would still take Jordan on my team over him but there has NEVER, in the entire history of the game, been a more naturally talented player than Kobe Bryant. I say this as someone who hates the Lakers.
I disagree with Nash though. He did deserve his first MVP (not the second). Yea, his defense is sloppy but you have to look at the team the year before Nash got there and how much he improved them. That is what MVP is, the one who makes the most difference for his team. Yes, Kobe WAS his whole team that year, but the Suns had a lot more success.
- UglieJosh, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Glad to see there is someone else who doesn't let nostalgia and reputation be the deciding factors in this argument.
- UglieJosh, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2None of your statements directly contradict mine. Yes, Jordan has the edge in all the intangibles. Jordan was the better basketball player, I never claimed he wasn't.
- ulmedas, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Ohh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that they played defense anymore.
- quomen, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2Say that after Kobe wins five trophies. I love Kobe and Jordan, but it's stupid to say Kobe's better. Kobe can shoot from the three point line better, but Jordan is the person who INVENTED driving to the basket. Dont forget all those game winning jumpshots.
- blackinthmiddle, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Jordan won six trophies, not five. And he would have won eight if he didn't decide to try and play baseball! Heck, Kobe wasn't even the best player on his own team when he won his championships, which is the reason he wanted Shaq out so badly.
I agree with you. I can't think of one statistic Kobe has over Jordan, yet many forget the past very quickly. The latest flavor of the day is all of a sudden the best player ever! Like Shaq claiming to be the most dominant ever. There were years that Wilt AVERAGED 25+ rpg!- jankind, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Regarding Wilt: And a season with 50+ pts per game (1960-1961 I think)
- jankind, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Regarding Wilt: And a season with 50+ pts per game (1960-1961 I think)
- rhoffer21, on 03/06/2008, -0/+0I dont think we will ever know which one is best or whether they were the greats you all think they are. in the NBA its all about who you are. The big names get away with basically everything and draw the weakest fouls ive ever seen.
