- anklesnap, on 11/14/2009, -4/+21This is hilarious. Clearly the Grizz don't even have ONE player better than Iverson. When you think about it they are starting Zach Randolph and he is even MORE one dimensional than Iverson when it comes to scoring. At least iverson plays the passing lanes with lazy d but comes up with steals.
Iverson is their best scoring option. Memphis is addicted to losing.... - shaqtastic, on 11/16/2009, -0/+11The Grizzlies have 5 players better than Iverson... in practice.
But we talkin' bout PRAC-TICE. Not a game. Not, not a game. Not THE game. We talkin' bout practice, man. What are we talking about?? Practice? We talkin' bout practice. - SeamusMcCloud, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10this is a hilarious article for the average digger, but if you follow the nba, keeping iverson on the bench makes sense for memphis. first of all, saying that all 5 players have to be better than iverson is wrong. no matter how bad their starting center or power forward is, iverson cannot play those positions. at 6'1, he pretty much can only play point or the 2, if memphis wants to go small.
so why not have him be the starting pg or 2? because iverson dominates the ball. He was at his mvp best when the entire offense ran through him, taking 20-30 shots a game and having his teammates play d and rebound for him. Being 6'1, that works when you're young and quick, not when you're 34 and slow. his numbers over the last 3 years have dropped way below his career avg of 27ppg. even before the whole detroit issue, he was averaging 17ppg, similar to what oj mayo and rudy gay (the starting 2 and 3 on memphis) do now.
the difference is rudy and mayo are young, and on the rise, iverson is on the decline. Letting iverson play his game will only hurt rudy and mayo's development, and it won't make a big enough difference. It's not like iverson starting means them beating the lakers in the playoffs, and winning it all in june. better to keep losing and get higher draft picks during the lottery - Xanderrr, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7... I didn't check that this was the onion and was raging as I read :/
- getatmedigg, on 11/16/2009, -1/+6Ah, this is the Onion you know?
- daeyeth, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5...The problem isn't with Memphis. If they could of started him, they would of. But when he says this...
Q: "How do you think you will fit into the way they play? What's your role?"
A: "Honestly, I don't know my role, I'm just gonna continue to do what I do best and that's score"
It's crystal clear that he wants Memphis to center the entire team, and in essence future of the franchise, around him, a 34 year old aging veteran. How much longer does A.I. have left? And where does that leave Memphis after he's gone if A.I. had taken priority over the development of their younger players? - Rikushix, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Clearly bringing back Big Country will make everything better.
- Diggchick83, on 11/18/2009, -0/+3 The problem is that Iverson wont shut up til the team is doing well and the Grizzles are not a good team....
- jeffmon, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Hopefully you realize soon that this is the Onion =)
- JHB207, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Well said Seamus.
Quit being a selfish whiny bitch AI , your old and it's time to be a team player or retire. Don't threaten , do it. Your time has passed.
Hopefully AI will read that and take my advice. :) - andybo429, on 11/20/2009, -0/+1Gotta love the Big Country reference.
- itinerantspectr, on 11/16/2009, -1/+2I don't purport to know how to run a sports team, but it would seem that if you have a record this bad, you might want to at least TRY starting Iverson for one game and see how it goes.
- fallark, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1First time the Onion got me. Now I can't feel superior anymore... :(
- fakeplasticsnow, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1You think a franchise player should waste time in practice?
- bugalou, on 11/17/2009, -0/+0Fake news is fake.

- n8si0la6, on 11/16/2009, -1/+0If this is about Lebron or Kobe Bryant, you can tell it was onion right away without looking at the article.
But Iverson. Honestly, for a moment, I am not sure, I doubted, and I have to check the address bar. - TheGreatBelow, on 11/16/2009, -4/+1No, no they don't
