- marabout40, on 08/11/2008, -26/+465Why would they do that? What's the point? Insult your hosts? Morons.
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/12/2008, -21/+285The Spanish are notoriously racist.
- msu2k, on 08/11/2008, -9/+254If that goes public in China, it can only help the U.S. having the home crowd cheering for them when they face Spain.
- duobinary, on 08/12/2008, -8/+222The shame in Spain stays mainly in the game
- JAPHacake, on 06/11/2009, -43/+254Unbelievable
- AbdullahAbuDawu, on 09/12/2008, -8/+163Stay classy Spain.
- aussiejan, on 08/11/2008, -12/+153I didn't find that sort of thing funny when I was in public school. How is it possible that nobody on either team, their coaches or anybody at the ad agency didn't stand up and say "you know, somebody might find this offensive". It always astounds me when something monumentally stupid is done and nobody steps up to try to stop it.
- Cfahooligan, on 08/12/2008, -7/+139It's just like what the Spanish did to Hamilton Lewis. The crowd painted their faces black and wore shirts that said "Hamilton's Family." For those of you who don't know, Hamilton Lewis is a black F1 race car driver.
- riskybeats, on 08/12/2008, -6/+136I wonder how smug they felt after they did it.
"Man we are funny! Where are the Olympics hosted this year anyways?" - ast16, on 08/11/2008, -11/+137Word of warning to all Spanish athletes: Avoid the Coke.
- athk, on 08/12/2008, -5/+11940 million versus 1.3 billion.
GG. - potusom, on 08/11/2008, -12/+113Now all they need is Japanese, Dirty Knees, Look at These!
- gabrielconroy, on 08/12/2008, -0/+87For those of you who don't know, he's called Lewis Hamilton.
- deweather, on 08/12/2008, -2/+77actually, the Chinese are big fans of our team. They gave Kobe Bryant a huge ovation when his name was announced before the game with the Chinese Basketball team. The people of China actually kinda like Bush too, because of his father. The Chinese people are big fans of many things western.
- rukeypoo, on 08/12/2008, -5/+76They're gonna lose anyways.
- cheese06, on 08/12/2008, -7/+77I lived in Spain for a semester and holy crap theyre ridiculously racist. I blame it on the Franco era and their generation. And yeah I'm asian too so it was pretty blatant in my face.
- daimos0, on 08/12/2008, -8/+68Ouch! Goodbye Olympic bid for Madrid in 2016....
- lanzemurdok, on 08/12/2008, -8/+61trust me. Spain is as racist as they come.
- poorlilmonkey, on 08/12/2008, -4/+56The whole Chinese team should come out and make fun of Pau Gasol's ugly beard
- RMoore08, on 08/12/2008, -7/+56This is just wrong. The Olympics are supposed to bring the world closer together, not this.
- artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -10/+57I don't get Spanish players and fans, ESPECIALLY in soccer. They have to be some of the most insensitive, insecure ***** on the planet, going as far as making racist gestures and comments, publicly, to their OWN damn players. I hope they don't bring home not ONE gold medal, hell, not even bronze.
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/12/2008, -8/+47I'm sorry, no. Spaniards are exceptionally racist. I know this from personal experience.
- lwongphoto, on 08/12/2008, -5/+42where's bruce lee when we need him.
- eLuugy, on 08/12/2008, -20/+57***** you Spain, I hope China tramples over you guys in basketball
(although we all know USA will own you so bad) - Battlemaster1, on 08/12/2008, -1/+37I don't know the point of this ad but Spain has a history of this. Anyone remember what they were doing to Hamilton in the F1 testing in Spain this year. Its rather sad to see such open racism
- perfectsilence, on 08/11/2008, -18/+53come on, people in Spain believe people are people, and should not be judged on the color of their skin, only on their religion!
- langdonalger, on 08/12/2008, -2/+36Spain’s one of those European countries that has always said it didn’t have a problem with racism because it never had many major internal racial problems. However if you looked hard enough, the reason for the racial harmony is because all the minorities had long since been chased out. Furthering the racial homogeny is the fact that Spain was a net exporter of workers for most of the 20th century, meaning not many immigrants came in from abroad like in Holland, Germany or France.
The Spanish can be some of the most racist people you ever met. The thing is, since so many have lived their whole lives without having to deal with any other nationality or race, many of them do not have a clue that what they’re doing would be considered racist or offensive. - teh_spazz, on 08/12/2008, -13/+46***** tools.
- slaver, on 08/12/2008, -1/+34Wow, talk about the famed European tolerance.
- inyearstocome, on 08/12/2008, -1/+32Zerglings attack!
- tmacfan123, on 08/12/2008, -5/+35Do they not realize that they're in a country with over a billion of the people who they're making fun of and if this gets out they're basketball skills really aren't gonna save them from getting beat up....
- FreddieD, on 08/12/2008, -2/+31An example of racism in sports with Spain...
Listen to the monkey noises made by the crowd whenever a black player touches the ball in this match against England.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1LS6Lj4ehM
This is far worse than anything we ever encounter in the States... - paulvq, on 08/12/2008, -3/+30Yeah, it's obviously a sign of their gratitude.
- jasz, on 08/12/2008, -3/+30My two cents...
Unfortunately, racial issues are stronger in the US and the UK compared to the rest of the world, obviously due to a long history of racial discrimination. What in the US/UK is "completely inappropriate" can be "completely normal" in many other countries.
Take it from me, I was born and raised in Colombia (south america) in a city close to the coast where 80% of the population is afro-colombian. Colombia also had a long period where slavery was lawful.
But in Colombia it is very common to call each other by their appearance but it is never (unless explicitly noted) discriminating. In Colombia, a person of japanese, korean or chinese heritage (thus having slanted eyes).. all of them are called "chinos"... just like many people will call "gringo" to any who looks very caucasian, and also someone who is black will be called "negro". Yet nobody cares!
Now, regarding the spanish team I guarantee that their intentions never were those of making fun of asian people, or even to be derogatory. Being politically correct is an American thing, just because in America/UK everyone is so sensitive about these matters.
So in short, I certainly don't think that the spanish team have to be punished or anything like that, because their intentions were never to make fun of asians. I do believe that the ad agency involved in this should've done a little bit of research to avoid sensationalist press around it.
PS: pardon my english if I'm not clear. - smitty1479, on 08/12/2008, -6/+32They will be punished by Mr. Marshall Law!!
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -5/+31¿QUE?
- kurejibitch, on 08/12/2008, -4/+30I agree with you -- it's just a way to imitate eyes, and of course, as a child, no harm is really meant nor accomplished.
Unfortunately, these are knowing adults posing for a photo before going to compete in a historic, global event hosted by the people whom they are imitating rather crudely, although it is amusing from a certain comedic standpoint. What if it was a white team wearing blackface before the Africa World Cup? - domomike, on 08/12/2008, -1/+26My friend (Japanese) has Spanish in-laws. The first thing he told me about them was how racist they are. He was shocked at how openly racist they were. They hate the fact that he's Japanese. Not only do they use vulgar racist terms commonly, they openly call Asians "chinks" and "japs" while he's around. (By the way, the in-laws live in America.)
- Jared80KA, on 08/12/2008, -15/+39Unberievabur!
- dwninjungleland, on 08/12/2008, -3/+26ohh... so THAT'S what they meant by a spirit of international cooperation and friendly competition.
- Guitarzan, on 08/12/2008, -0/+22By George, she's got it!
- dwhiteley87, on 08/12/2008, -7/+29I just don't understand their motivation for doing this. This is totally unprovoked.
- bmarko, on 08/12/2008, -8/+29what dicks.
- staystellar, on 08/12/2008, -4/+24HORRIBLE idea....
- artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -4/+23Most ignorant comment ever. "Accidental Insult"? You're an idiot. Opps.
"Like when a young child does something inappropriate out of ignorance."
....we aren't dealing with children here. - Millsee, on 08/12/2008, -4/+23Reminds me when their football supporters were making monkey noise at a black footballer - shocking.
- alphaterminus, on 08/12/2008, -7/+25Logged in just to dig you up.
for those not familiar
"Chinese" Pull sides of lateral canthi of eyes up.
"Japanese" Pull lateral canthi down.
"Dirty Knees" Hold knees
"Look at these" Pull shirt out to emulate large breasts. - damack, on 08/12/2008, -20/+38The Spanish are known for racism I hope this does get out in China and there are repercussions involving and the team gets sent home.
The Spanish people have serious racism issues that need to be confronted. - sspooner, on 08/12/2008, -7/+24Not really. Presumably you've never been to China.
I have. Several times. I've been called "fish eye" many times and seen plenty of people mimic my eyes (I'm a westerner)
BFD. Not even vaguely racist, I found it quiet amusing just as the Chinese folks meant it.
No offense taken because none was implied.
Where do the guardian get off on being offended on behalf of the Chinese ?
Douchebags.
Dictionary.com defines racism as :
"1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races."
Which part of that photo is racist ? -
