Entire Olympic Basketball Team Make Racist Gesture
guardian.co.uk — The Spanish Olympic Basketball teams, male and female, were photographed for a newspaper advert prior to the games, all making "slit-eyed" faces.

I mean, come the hell on...
Asians have slanted, very different eyes... Where's the insult?- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -37/+25Exactly. In Portugal, doing this just represents an asian person or situation. I did it when I went to Istanbul and arrived on the asian side. Since it was the first time I was in Asia, I took a picture pushing the corners of my eyes. Am I racist?
This is not news, this is trash intented to provoke a controversy where there is none. Typical of many English tabloids. - perfectsilence, on 08/12/2008, -14/+16what's really offensive is that you don't even acknowledge it's racist, next thing you are going to tell us calling black people monkeys aren't offensive because that's what they look like.
- hwy9nightkid, on 08/12/2008, -7/+4both of you are just ignorant, but it is offensive.
- jasz, on 08/12/2008, -3/+30My two cents...
Unfortunately, racial issues are stronger in the US and the UK compared to the rest of the world, obviously due to a long history of racial discrimination. What in the US/UK is "completely inappropriate" can be "completely normal" in many other countries.
Take it from me, I was born and raised in Colombia (south america) in a city close to the coast where 80% of the population is afro-colombian. Colombia also had a long period where slavery was lawful.
But in Colombia it is very common to call each other by their appearance but it is never (unless explicitly noted) discriminating. In Colombia, a person of japanese, korean or chinese heritage (thus having slanted eyes).. all of them are called "chinos"... just like many people will call "gringo" to any who looks very caucasian, and also someone who is black will be called "negro". Yet nobody cares!
Now, regarding the spanish team I guarantee that their intentions never were those of making fun of asian people, or even to be derogatory. Being politically correct is an American thing, just because in America/UK everyone is so sensitive about these matters.
So in short, I certainly don't think that the spanish team have to be punished or anything like that, because their intentions were never to make fun of asians. I do believe that the ad agency involved in this should've done a little bit of research to avoid sensationalist press around it.
PS: pardon my english if I'm not clear. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -9/+20"what's really offensive is that you don't even acknowledge it's racist, next thing you are going to tell us calling black people monkeys aren't offensive because that's what they look like."
No, that is a different thing. Saying that chinese have different eyes is stating a ***** fact.
As I posted in an answer to someone denying the existence of races:
There is a difference between race and species. And there ARE races, as there are differences between humans.
Black people produce more melanin and have denser bones, which makes them worse swimmers. They also have stronger muscles. Saying this is not racism is just pointing out what is obvious and observable. Just like saying that some asians have slanted eyes.
Does this make some superior to others? Yes. In some things whites are superior, in some blacks are superior, in some chinese are superior, in some indian are superior, etc, etc. But these differences are what makes us humans, and we must not only accept them but cherish them and celebrate them, as well as our similarities. Go yellow skin! Go blue eyes! Go fat nose! Go white men that can't jump!
jasz is correct, this is about political correctness, not racism.
Jah Bless. - sn4keeyez, on 08/12/2008, -8/+7Go into any Asian neighborhood in the world and make this gesture. I can guarantee that you would get your a$$ kicked.
- JKAL, on 08/12/2008, -3/+4@Jasz & Hrodrik:
for one thing calling people by their race in latin america is common, but for black people, if you say "negro/a" it most often can be insulting, most common usage would be "negrito/a", however just because it is accepted in your country or culture it does make it OK to do this in an internationally event, look at some of the Papua New Guinea and South American tribes, where they walk around naked, that is what they do it is a fact, but does not mean it is OK for them to do so at the Olympics.
Further more even if we give the benifit of doubt to the Spanish team (one which I will not) trying to justify this as it is OK in their country, only opens up the door for racist people to do the same in the name of "well it is OK in our country".
This team are either poorly educated in world events and are ignorant on general behaviour as ambassadors of their country or they are complete racists.
- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -37/+25Exactly. In Portugal, doing this just represents an asian person or situation. I did it when I went to Istanbul and arrived on the asian side. Since it was the first time I was in Asia, I took a picture pushing the corners of my eyes. Am I racist?
- SRSco, on 08/12/2008, -3/+16It's been a great year for Spanish sports (Euro Cup, Sastre wins Tour de France, Nadal wins French Open, Wimbledon). What a way to put a cherry on top.
- damack, on 08/12/2008, -20/+38The Spanish are known for racism I hope this does get out in China and there are repercussions involving and the team gets sent home.
The Spanish people have serious racism issues that need to be confronted.- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -15/+4I think this is unrelated.
- FreddieD, on 08/12/2008, -2/+31An example of racism in sports with Spain...
Listen to the monkey noises made by the crowd whenever a black player touches the ball in this match against England.

This is far worse than anything we ever encounter in the States... - ozodin, on 08/12/2008, -10/+13Please, China is also one of the most racist nations on the earth. It amazes me that only European nations can be chastised for being racist while Asian and other nations are perpetually portrayed as the victims. Spain does have race problems, there is no doubt, but they pale in comparison to China's or Japan's. In China or Japan or Korea it is deeply deeply institutionalized (to the point where things like immigration are completely forbidden, and inequalities based on citizenship/race are the norm, where black people are still commonly seen and portrayed as animals and apes, etc), unlike in the West where the state and institutions for the most part have risen above it. I wonder when the self-hating honkies on digg will wake up to themselves.
- rotundo, on 08/12/2008, -2/+7ozodin - who cares that other nations are racist? what does that have to do with anything? if i pop a cap in your ass can i then say "nobody cares when that happens in harlem" as an excuse? maybe we can raise the bar, eh?
you are right: the racism in some asian countries is abominable. Feel free to call it out when you see it, but not as a shield against criticism for racism in other countries.
And there's no self hating Honkee here. This is me: http://www.3honkees.com/ - bhaity, on 08/12/2008, -2/+3@ozodin

Immigration is forbidden? Unlike the West? Wow, I'm willing to bet you've never even been to any of these 3 countries you're talking about. - jrizzo, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1If immigration is forbidden, then yes - I haven't been there. Duh.

- sn4keeyez, on 08/12/2008, -20/+10So typical... the anonymity of the internet allows you such bravery. You wouldn't have the balls to say this to an actual Asian to their face.
- urbandistrict, on 08/12/2008, -17/+10sn4keeyez, why? Because asians are known for their aggression and large statue?
- skankyBacon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1@sn4keeyez
On the contrary; many Asians do in fact possess a sense of humor.
- jacobo, on 08/12/2008, -22/+32sorry for my english, bury me if im wrong but this is my opinion.
Im from Colombia, when i was a child, all the kids made the same gesture to refer asian people and we aren't racist, its just a way to imitate their eyes. i bet anything if you ask a latin kid (or adult) to make a "chinese" face, they will do the same thing. hey its a picture. this is the first time in my life i hear that those gestures are a racist insults. seriously. tell me another way to look like a chinese in a picture without chinese wear?
peace- kurejibitch, on 08/12/2008, -4/+30I agree with you -- it's just a way to imitate eyes, and of course, as a child, no harm is really meant nor accomplished.
Unfortunately, these are knowing adults posing for a photo before going to compete in a historic, global event hosted by the people whom they are imitating rather crudely, although it is amusing from a certain comedic standpoint. What if it was a white team wearing blackface before the Africa World Cup? - artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -5/+18Yes, but as you say, YOU WERE KIDS. Also, you don't have a history of being blatantly racist and ignorant. It's one thing to do it with friends, it's another to put it in a newspaper. Oh, and also, when the host country of the Olympics are Chinese, and you make this derogatory and childish gesture, it's more than just a coincidence.
- gz2nyc, on 08/12/2008, -12/+41) all racists claim they're not racists, and
2) you probably think it's okay to paint your face black to imitate a black guy
you uneducated racist ***** - xs5x, on 08/12/2008, -8/+1jacobo:
Go ***** yourself. - Niubai, on 08/12/2008, -3/+8I agree with you jacobo. Here in Brazil this gesture is not considered racist too, for both children and adults, it's just a common way to refer to the eyes of asian (and descendants) people. And Brazil has a enormous asian community, mainly the japanese (highest numbers of japanese people outside Japan).
I think latin people is way more relaxed about this racism thing, because latins are way more culturally mixed. - bhaity, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2@ gz2nyc
tropic Thunder. - mrblonde314, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I concur. This photo isn't racist. But this is one thing you have to realize about 21st century America. If you can have a slight laugh towards anybody or anything then you're considered a self loathing, non-politically correct, racist. I don't see where in these photos there is any angst or hatred expressed towards the Chinese people. The fact that Chinese people have slanted eyes is not a stereotype or a put down. So really, it's kinda of a Colbert-ism (the fact that he doesn't see "color") that those who are getting bent out of shape about this are in fact the ones who have their brains mapped in such a way, that when they view something as harmless as this, they perceive it as racist. I wonder why their minds automatically go that way? Hmmmm....
Anyway, I just don't see the people of China even caring about this. Why would they? This isn't hatred or belittlement. People just love a reason to bitch so they get themselves all hot and bothered, That my friend is the true problem with (most) "racism". - skankyBacon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1It's not inherently racist. It's all about intent. If a little kid does it, they're not being racist (necessarily); they're just trying to imitate the appearance. And nothing about the physical motion changes as a person grows up. The only thing that is different is that there is more of a likelihood that it could be meant pejoratively.
It's the same thing with so-called "bad words," too. No word is inherently bad; they only have what power people choose to give them. *You have to be taught to be offended.* I mean, why is "*****" bad but "crap" is okay?
It just goes to show that you should first and foremost try not to be offended. Secondly, try not to offend. You can't control what other people do, but you can control how you react to it.
- kurejibitch, on 08/12/2008, -4/+30I agree with you -- it's just a way to imitate eyes, and of course, as a child, no harm is really meant nor accomplished.
- malonie, on 08/12/2008, -17/+15After f*cking up my country(Philippines) for more than 300 years, I hate to say it but screw this bastards
- DjOverEZ, on 08/12/2008, -2/+7Oh yeah? Well I'm a native Mayan!
- toecutter169, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4I'm a mix Mayan/Filipino!
- ReneRuizJ, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2I'm Mayan/Filipino/Spanish.
Hah!~ - ansatsu29, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1aptly said malonie, they used to call us (filipinos) "Indios" which reflects that these spanish bastards really have racist issues way back then
- ansatsu29, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1djoverez has no idea about philippine history...well, ignorance can be a bliss sometimes
- imsoclever, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3I'm a Neanderthal, ***** all you.
- CatoRules, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3You have no idea about filipinos in Spain!!! I´m one of them and you are totally wrong. You can not blame current spanish people of what their grand grand parents did. English people also killed a lot of american natives. I´ve never been called 'indio' by the way. you are such an ignorants.
- malonie, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Cato, calling me ignorant, ***** you ,a kettle calling a pot black. learn your history ,I suggest reading a book by Jose Rizal and then you can talk to me but before then, I might as well stick a fork on your ass
- CatoRules, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2I'm not talking about history malonie. I'm talking about now. They treat me well. I'm just saying you can't blame spanish for what their grand parents did. See you can express yourself without insult like you did. I think what you did is worst than spanish did. BTW Jose Rizal has a big monument in Madrid and every year Filipino community in Spain, which is quite big, celebrates Independence day with the support of the authorities. They are very sorry for what they did. You are an ignorant about how filipinos lives in spain nowadays.
- ansatsu29, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1cato, sometimes you have to understand that some wounds in the past never heal -- some of the filipinos here in the philippines still cant forget some of the ugly legacy left by the spaniards.
- skankyBacon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1@ansatsu29
You are choosing to be "wounded" by something that was not done to you, and you are directing your bitterness towards people who did not do it anyway, and that is a pointless waste of time and energy.
Regardless of what was done in the past by and to others, choose to start fresh and you'll have a better life for it. I'm not saying you have to forget, but carrying this illogical grudge with you isn't going to help you or anyone else. The only way we (humanity) can move forward is for someone to stop and wipe the slate clean...unfortunately everyone feels that it should be the "other" group that should have to do it.
- DivisibleByZero, on 08/12/2008, -4/+14"No offence was intended by the advert, but whether the Chinese see it that way is a different matter"
It sure is a good thing the guardian is here to get offended on their behalf then... Until I hear whether or not the Chinese find this kind of humor offensive, I'm not going to pass judgment. - sspooner, on 08/12/2008, -7/+24Not really. Presumably you've never been to China.
I have. Several times. I've been called "fish eye" many times and seen plenty of people mimic my eyes (I'm a westerner)
BFD. Not even vaguely racist, I found it quiet amusing just as the Chinese folks meant it.
No offense taken because none was implied.
Where do the guardian get off on being offended on behalf of the Chinese ?
Douchebags.
Dictionary.com defines racism as :
"1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races."
Which part of that photo is racist ?- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -4/+2Exactly. Why are these people so ***** mad at something they don't understand? Are you all chinese or something?
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze. - nitemonkey, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6When I was in China the derogatory term for westerners was fat-head.
My friend who runs a tour group refers to himself as fat-head to the Chinese, and it's actually quite a good ice breaker. - imsoclever, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1My head is pretty fat, but it hurts when you point it out :(
- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -4/+2Exactly. Why are these people so ***** mad at something they don't understand? Are you all chinese or something?
- ariza, on 08/12/2008, -6/+14man when did everyone loose their sense of humor -
So no one here has ever done something or said something that could have been considered 'racist' give me a break. It's a joke - its not like the Spanish basketball team is driving tanks into Tibet. Keep ***** in perspective.- mikhial66, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3Sure, we've all done something that could be considered racist, but did we ever take out a full page ad in the newspaper to do it?
- CatoRules, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Problem is English people are racist with Spaniards and they try everytime they can to insult us. They think they are better than us
- HeaveN, on 08/12/2008, -3/+7Basketball? GET BACK TO MOWING MY LAWN!!
- thephreak99, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Now THAT is racism... Not the pic..
- Biljonbil, on 08/14/2008, -0/+0Another typical "son-of-a-bush" big ass us guy. Born in the land of ku-kux-klan and general custer who killed thousand of indians.... No wonder u.s citizens are hated so much all around the world.
So you better mow your *****
Lot of people from everywhere is very happy living in peace in Spain.
- spankaccount, on 08/12/2008, -3/+3If you have spent any time at all in Europe, this would not be a surprise... as shameful as it is.
- Malovech, on 08/12/2008, -6/+5It's ***** Spain, of course they're racists.
- dtd00d, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2No, UNFORGIVABLE.
- frostbyt, on 08/12/2008, -1/+8Is it really? Come on. People get a grip this is NOT racist at all.
- hymie, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5The problem is many people are analyzing this incident based on what is acceptable in the US or UK and are applying those norms upon the Spanish.
Firstly, the intent behind the gesture was not hurtful. I think Americans and the British have a bit of complex about diversity—it’s great and all, just as long as we ignore it. The great thing about the U.S. for example is that everyone is allowed to be white. And although I say that somewhat ironically, that is still an amazing thing which allows anyone to have a place in this society. On the flipside, it’s as if recognizing someone’s difference whether in looks, culture, accent or language has become taboo, as if that difference were something bad that we better pretend doesn’t exist. I think its great and cause for celebration that people around the world are different, and I also think its fine to make light hearted jokes about these differences. That is all the Spanish national team was doing. They were calling attention to the fact that they were going somewhere where the people were really really different. They were celebrating it and joking about it. The gesture would only be cause for offence if there was malicious intention behind it, or if having the eye’s of an Asian were something to be ashamed of. Neither is the case. In Spain, and many other countries, there is no such hangup in regard to other people’s differences.
I think this photo from the world cup in Korea and Japan illustrates this point. Either Ronaldo is a racist or the Japanese or Koreans host is a mean teethmakerfunnerofs. http://www.basicmedia.co.uk/doteu/worldcup/2006/06 ...
Spain is not perfect. Nowhere is. But the Spanish (and Catalans, and Basques, and Gallegos), in their complete disregard of political correctness, live in one of the most tolerant places on earth. Yes, racism exists, and maybe Spaniards are too tolerant of that racism, but there is very big difference between the hurtful words that some (fascist) fans in Zaragoza yell at a black player, and the general political incorrectness that is part of Spanish life, most of which is light hearted. Much of the non-PC talk in Spain could be offensive, but the source of much of that talk is not maliciousness, but a certain naiveté that stems from Spain’s relative lack of diversity (although that is changing). Luis Argones was out of line for his comments about Henry, someone of his stature should know better. However, I suggest you ask Samuel Eto’o (or Google) what he thinks about the distinction between hurtful words and merely politically incorrect ones. (note: Eto’o is a Cameroonian striker who spoke out on behalf of Argones following his comments about Henry. He also left the field because of the racist chants in Zaragoza).
I think in the US and UK, there is far too great a focus on superficial racism and that the real injustices inflicted upon the helpless in society are ignored. One example (and there are many) is US immigration law which is draconian compared to the Spanish. Additionally, there is no popular movement in Spain to build a wall to keep immigrants out of the country and if sick, an illegal immigrant in Spain will receive the best possible healthcare. Americans in the US cannot even say the same.
Spain is a great place, and I can’t help take of offence to the unwarranted criticism against it. But what annoys me even more is the PC fascism we see more and more of. It is true that Spain is not as PC as the US, but it is a much more equitable and tolerant society.- Greg2k, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you for taking the time to explain such an important issue.
As a spaniard myself, I agree we are politically incorrect as hell. We tell racist jokes all the time. We complain about inmigrants all the time. But we know exactly what discrimination is all about (we had a dictator running the place 35 years ago) and understand the difference between racial political incorrectness and racism.
This was a (cheesy) jib at the host country, nothing more.
- Greg2k, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you for taking the time to explain such an important issue.
- LoJaume, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Americans, you are fool.
Of course it is not a racist gesture. I am Spanish, and nobody in Spain see racism in this image. We have no problems with Chinese people and it would be stupid injure Chinese community. It is a image of complicity with the Chinese Olympic games.
Curiously, only American people see racism in this image. The same country who destroys Iraq to get their oil, where is forbidden to drink until 21 but you can buy a bazooka at 17, the same country which plan build a wall to avoid Mexicans to enter, is now terrorized with an innocent and happy image you not understand.
Americans, you are an ill society.- nbyn, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Last time I checked, the Guardian is a British newspaper?
- gubatron2, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1It's not racist c'mon!, I'm starting to agree with McCain "nation of whiners", this is so stupid.
Spain is known for racism towards black and hispanics, not chinese. When they are racist they're very mean, this was obviously a picture to let their people know they've earned the chance to go to the Olympics in China. Obviously not the best tasting way. It's probably a stupid decision by whoever planned the photoshoot, not a racist one.
- roosterjm2k2, on 08/12/2008, -45/+24Is it really?

- dragon76, on 08/12/2008, -3/+19Are you kidding? Chinese people LOVE America! We sent them all our jobs, we buy everything that they make after we sent them all our jobs and on top of that are indebted to them for a war they don't have to participate in.
- eLau, on 08/12/2008, -2/+10If you watched the opening game between US and China, you would have saw that the Chinese cheered for both teams at different times. American star athletes sell more jerseys than Yao Ming.

No, we do not love the US.
- deweather, on 08/12/2008, -2/+77actually, the Chinese are big fans of our team. They gave Kobe Bryant a huge ovation when his name was announced before the game with the Chinese Basketball team. - Azrael84, on 08/12/2008, -2/+3Some of you american guys are sometimes complete ignorants about the culture outside your country...
Just becaus that gesture is regarded as a racial insult in america by americans or asian-americans, that doesn't mean that the same happens in the all the rest of the world, particularly spain or china.
I'm from portugal (just next to spain) and I found it quite surprising that this story was havving such relevance. See, we share many habbits and cultural traits with spain and I can assure you that that is not regarded as an insult to asian people here.
For those of you who say that despite it wasn't ment to be offensive it still is, well, I don't see the chinese being offended at all.
As another digger just said: "Anyway, I just don't see the people of China even caring about this. Why would they? This isn't hatred or belittlement. People just love a reason to bitch so they get themselves all hot and bothered, That my friend is the true problem with (most) "racism""- InsaneOni, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4In what way is this not offensive? Your whole argument consisted of saying "it's not racist, so it's not racist." You're gonna have to do better than that.
- Azrael84, on 08/13/2008, -1/+1Then I ask you: In what way is it offensive?
Why should pulling your face skin back, making your eyes appear like the chinese be racist towards the very people you are impersonating? When I want to offend someone I don't walk around and try to look like him/her. It's just plain ridiculous.
Nevertheless, that is considered offensive in America, and I can't stress this enough, because I don't know any European country where that happens except maybe UK.
Why does that happen? It happens because it was socially established that it was a racist sign. You grew up with that notion imprinted into your mind.
And I can understand that. I can understand that it can be offensive if directed at Americans or Asian Americans. That they would get mad if that happened. It would only be natural.
Now, What you have to understand is that the vast majority of the world doesn't think that way. It's a simple harmless gesture. And since it was done by people who don't regard it as offensive and it clearly wasn't directed at Americans or Asian Americans, why do you even care about it? - paranoidfox, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Who are you to say what's offensive and what's not? Unless you're of the ethnicity being poked fun of, you aren't allowed to make such distinctions.

- spaceshipsix, on 08/12/2008, -39/+16Highly doubtful this was done as an insult. If it is in fact them pulling back their eyes to look Chinese it's more likely an accidental insult (if the Chinese are even bothered by it). Like when a young child does something inappropriate out of ignorance. People are going to blow this way out of proportion.
- paulvq, on 08/12/2008, -3/+30Yeah, it's obviously a sign of their gratitude.

"Like when a young child does something inappropriate out of ignorance."
....we aren't dealing with children here. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -16/+6You are right spaceshipsix. This was completely innocent and it will indeed be blown out of proportion, which is exactly what the tabloids want.
*sigh* - buckrogers1965, on 08/12/2008, -2/+11occidental insult :)
- habbofresh, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6sure thing. say, when we come to your town we'll greet you while pulling our eyes wide the ***** open.
I guess that's an adult thing people do, right? By your standards it's acceptable, right? - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -9/+4It's childish and dumb, but i wouldn't consider it an offense. And this was a photo for a spanish ad. Have you read the article or just looked at the photo with the typical american short attention span?
It was a bad move, but no offense was meant. - jaxcs, on 08/12/2008, -2/+4@hrodrik
What you need to understand is that the lack of intention to give offense doesn't remove any offense given or taken. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -5/+2jaxcs, do you live in China to know if this is considered offensive or not? Read around the other posts and you'll see how chinese people react to the notion that their eyes are different.
- richito, on 08/12/2008, -5/+1spaceshipsux... your parents had an accidental insult and you are accidental and ignorant. don't blow it out of proportion, okay?
- jaxcs, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3Hrodrik, the people who acknowledge that they are Asian on this site seems to feel that it was offensive so what are you saying?
But, I don't even need to do that because that isn't the point of your original comment. You say, "It was a bad move, but no offense was meant". I respond that the lack of intention to give offense doesn't make everything automatically all right. Stupidity is not a defense. - DatruKatalyst, on 08/12/2008, -2/+6As a Chinese-American, I do find great offense to the ad. But I take this in stride. I actually understand that gestures can be different in different settings. In America, the pullback the eyes gesture is used to insult Chinese people (a bus driver did it to me once and drove away!), but I can totally see the possibility the gesture used in a light hearted manner somewhere else. But I'm surprised no one who was in this project raised a meager hand and said this might not be a good idea in a general sense. What was going through the minds for this?
And I don't know how the mainland Chinese will think about it. They will prob. take it in stride because their hosts, but plot Spain's undoing (im jk). Or they may find it unoffensive at all.
But to me it offends. But I take it in stride, benefit of the doubt on this one. (Can a person from Spain please at least explain why the ad was conceived, though?)
But of course, now I will just have to cheer on America more! GO us! Redeem Team yea! - spaceshipsix, on 08/12/2008, -4/+1If the Chinese tell the Spanish that it was offensive I'm sure they will apologize outright. If the Spanish come back and say "no screw you Chinese" then that's a problem. But none of that will probably happen and this issue will fade away to nothing.
- silentmorning, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1I am with DatruKatalyst, as also a Chinese-American it deeply offends me. Their ignorance just shows where they stand with the rest of the world. You reap what you sow. Say goodbye to hosting the Olympics again.
- Mootabolife, on 08/12/2008, -22/+7Maybe they're trying to send the message that they're becoming more chinese by being in China and experiencing the culture. I really don't see them meaning to insult, someone would have said something.
- Battlemaster1, on 08/12/2008, -1/+37I don't know the point of this ad but Spain has a history of this. Anyone remember what they were doing to Hamilton in the F1 testing in Spain this year. Its rather sad to see such open racism
- Po0py, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6Agreed. Also any time a visiting football team goes to Spain they get monkey chants from the spanish crowd. I remember England football team went to spain for a friendly a year or two ago and the English center forward Emile Heskey got bombarded with monkey chants every time he got the ball. ***** disgraceful. Spain are one of the most racist countries when it comes to sport. They just don't get it.

- langdonalger, on 08/12/2008, -2/+36Spain’s one of those European countries that has always said it didn’t have a problem with racism because it never had many major internal racial problems. However if you looked hard enough, the reason for the racial harmony is because all the minorities had long since been chased out. Furthering the racial homogeny is the fact that Spain was a net exporter of workers for most of the 20th century, meaning not many immigrants came in from abroad like in Holland, Germany or France.
The Spanish can be some of the most racist people you ever met. The thing is, since so many have lived their whole lives without having to deal with any other nationality or race, many of them do not have a clue that what they’re doing would be considered racist or offensive.- hitkaiser, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I'm digging you up for the last paragraph but I totally disagree with the "because all the minorities had long since been chased out".
We are an indian family living in Spain since 25 years, like us we know of a whole community that extends in the thousands across Spain's major cities and thats only through ethnic ties. There are many more Chinese, Bangladeshis and Sub-Saharan Africans not to mention the latest rise in Eastern Europeans and South Americans. In fact, Spain has the highest rate of immigration in the whole of the Euro Zone. - Pittance, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I think he was referring to the Inquisition during the Dark Ages (I forget the exact time period) in which they removed most other ethnicities , and especially all non-catholic religions. Due to this, they probably have a much lower percentage of minorities in their culture compared to other nearby european countries.

"so many have lived their whole lives without having to deal with any other nationality or race"
Hmmmm... ¿Have you ever visited Madrid? - jadrian, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Your last paragraph is ridiculous.
A racist attitude is just an offensive attitude directed at a race. They cannot tell "it is racist" because there is nothing offensive about it. What happens is that some countries with plenty of serious racism problems just get over sensitive and label as racist anything that refers to the aspect of a certain race even if it's not even close to offensive. And then they are surprised if others do not get it.
- hitkaiser, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I'm digging you up for the last paragraph but I totally disagree with the "because all the minorities had long since been chased out".

- subterfuge, on 08/12/2008, -2/+18Europe has fewer black people than america, so they can probably get away with being more racist. i used to live in north carolina, where there were quite a few black people. then i moved north to pennsylvania. i noticed that there is much more racism in PA (at least where i live) because there are fewer black people. in NC, everyone was friends with at least one black person. at the moment, i dont have a single black friend. whenever a northerner talks about "the racist south", i get really pissed because there's more racism in the north. they're such bigots.
- Pittance, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Agreed. I live in NC as well. I have never heard such racism as when my grandmother from Illinois visited. She called them "colored" (which I don't think is that bad. probably the most literal description, and better than black). I didn't even know what that meant. To get to the really bad racism in the south, you usually have to go way out into the country where the people there have lived so sheltered and closed-in that they don't realize that kind of racism isn't tolerated any more. All the really bad reports are from the small farming towns, never from Raleigh or Charlotte, or even Fayetteville.

- thailand1972, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1@Cfahooligan, err, you called him black, not half black in your original post:-
"Hamilton Lewis is a black F1 race car driver"
We've picked up on this trend just to call people of mixed race (where one parent is black) "black". This is just as bad as calling them "white" - it is inaccurate.
Interesting article on Tiger Woods:-
http://www.salon.com/april97/tiger970430.html
"Woods made his remarks on "Oprah," when he was asked if it bothered him to be called an African-American. "It does," he said. "Growing up, I came up with this name: I'm a 'Cablinasian.'" As in Caucasian-black-Indian-Asian. Woods has a black father (or to be precise, if I am interpreting Woods' reported ancestry correctly, a half-black, one-quarter American Indian, one-quarter white father) and a Thai mother (or, with the same caveat, a half-Thai, half-Chinese mother). "I'm just who I am," Woods told Oprah Winfrey, "whoever you see in front of you."
- sonycam, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3He's not black, he's mixed race. I've never understood why mixed race people tend to be called black, eventhough they're normally half white and half black - as if we're assigning them to a specific race.

- Rich711, on 08/12/2008, -3/+6...so a child who plays with a toy that doesnt resemble a black person is racist? Really? Is that what racism is now? I remember a time when racism involved someone being oppressed by another based solely on the color of their skin.
I'm sorry, was that racist of me to say? I can never tell anymore. - Rich711, on 08/12/2008, -3/+4Wait, so if EVERYONE is wouldnt that mean, relatively speaking, that NO ONE is anymore? If everyone is racist than racism has become the standard. And if it was the new standard and it was no longer the exception it could no longer be labeled racist or anything at all. So if everyone is racist than racism can't actually exist.
Great, now that that's settled, I'm gonna go drag a Guatemalan behind my truck. - artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2@subterfuge
until you can find that science report, you're a damn fool. - Rich711, on 08/12/2008, -3/+3Oh come on, artfiend, where would digg be if no one could make baseless accusations and site nonsensical statistics that they think they read somewhere?
...it would probably go back to being a fun site full of tech news and funny video clips like digg used to be before they became mindless shills for Moveon.org, Mediamatters and HuffPo... *sigh* ...I miss the old digg. - Danby123, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Incorrect!

- vexingmodstwo, on 08/12/2008, -8/+47I'm sorry, no. Spaniards are exceptionally racist. I know this from personal experience.
- werries, on 08/12/2008, -18/+6what, from meeting 2 people? yeah, shut up.
- dragon76, on 08/12/2008, -10/+2Ok, so let's call it "xenophobic". Isn't that the new, acceptable way to say racist?
- domomike, on 08/12/2008, -1/+26My friend (Japanese) has Spanish in-laws. The first thing he told me about them was how racist they are. He was shocked at how openly racist they were. They hate the fact that he's Japanese. Not only do they use vulgar racist terms commonly, they openly call Asians "chinks" and "japs" while he's around. (By the way, the in-laws live in America.)
- edgarduck, on 08/13/2008, -0/+0Spanish hospitality workers at hotels are snobby. You´d think that THEY´D be nice to guests, but there weren't. And this happened to my parents, and me on different trips to Barcelona.

- lgh0s7l, on 08/12/2008, -4/+16i consider racism to be stupid....so does that make the spanish notoriously stupid? 0_o
- Samg85, on 08/12/2008, -2/+16Heck yeah, during soccer games they make racist comments and sounds at black players. Even to some dark latin people.
- MikeWanDo, on 08/12/2008, -8/+5It's hard to tell whether vexingmodstwo is intentionally being ironic (digg up) or actually calling the Spanish racist (digg down).
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/12/2008, -2/+8I'm being completely serious. I've met and known a lot of Spaniards and every single one of them was openly racist. Add stuff like this, the things they do at soccer matches, the things they've said to the F1 driver and anyone looking at it objectively could only come to one conclusion.
Sure, there's probably tons of Spaniards who aren't racist but I've never met any or seen many coming out and condemning their fellow Spaniards. - SaDan, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I used to work for someone who was born and raised in Spain, and now lives in the US. He was probably the most maladjusted person I know with regards to tact and political correctness, and I say this as someone who hates playing the PC game. This guy was off the scale with his comments in the open, and his distrust of all women. Serious issues with that one.
I gave the rest of Spain's population the benefit of the doubt, because I've not met anyone else from Spain. I'm sad to learn this guy is probably a GOOD example of their attitudes towards others.
- vexingmodstwo, on 08/12/2008, -2/+8I'm being completely serious. I've met and known a lot of Spaniards and every single one of them was openly racist. - grandinferno, on 08/12/2008, -11/+6No, a statement like 'Spain are notoriously racist' is racist.
- Pittance, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3No it isn't. Spain isn't a race. Spanish is, but that isn't the same thing. Spain is racist is not racist, its generalizing.
- Azrael84, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Actually, I'm pretty sure that Spanish is a nationality...

- ShaoKahn, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Ever been to Barcelona? There are swastika's and WP symbols painted all over the place. And they don't even care to clean them off the walls.
- robinthehood, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4Racism is not a result of stupidity, to all people that are saying it is. Racism is a result of ignorance. They are two distinctly different things.
- Omar12, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2This is not the first incident about Spanish teams being racist. The basketball team were racist at the puertorican team, calling them primitive indians, and in soccer, some players and coaches (the coach for the national team) were accused of being racist to the black players.
- elarson, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2Yup, you said it.
- mawar00, on 08/12/2008, -3/+2I'm from Spain and I don't agree with you. In Spain there is a bit of racism (just like in many other countries, like UK, USA, France, Italy...). Do not accuse all Spanish people for a joke made by our Basketball team. Our country is full of immigrants and the majority of us treat them like we treat any other person.
- k4ng, on 08/13/2008, -1/+1Why is mawar00 being dugg down?
- SaDan, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Because he is biased by being from Spain. He may not know the full extent of how racist he is compared to others.
- speedgonzalez, on 08/13/2008, -0/+0I completely agree with your comment, but I think it's limited to a bulk of Spaniards raised in Spain.
From experience, not just their basketball teams or soccer coaches make these comments, but I've personally heard these comments from other Spaniards. To the Spaniard, in the cubicle next to mine, all Latin Americans are Mexicans and all Asians are Chinos. Black folks are not immune to his jokes either.
The only explanation I have for these idiots in the picture is that to the Spanish culture there's anything wrong with insulting other cultures. Otherwise, someone in this circle jerk or the Marcia would have questioned if it was smart to make slit-eyed gestures and publish the picture.

- k4ng, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Since when is racism friendly?
- Rheic, on 08/12/2008, -3/+2It's obviously just not thought of as an offensive gesture in Spain. Do the Chinese even get offended by it? I wouldn't get offended if a Chinese person did a gesture imitating the shape of my eyes. I'd probably find it kind of funny.
- gubatron2, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1It's not offensive in latin america either, it looks like a picture in which you tell your friends or family, "Hey I'm going to China". It's not racist by any means.
People in spain are racist towards black or latinos if anything, and when they're racist, they don't eat crap to be racist, they will tell you "piece of ***** *****", or even get violent. Look for youtube videos of aggresions in the subway against latin immigrants by spanish people, that's racist, not a funny picture pulling your eyes back suggesting you're going to china.

- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -29/+10Contrary to this, that is racism. That is comparing black people to simians. This? This is merely a mention that they are in china, WHERE PEOPLE HAVE ***** SLANTED EYES.
Goddamn, you people are getting badly educated. Racism is bad but people must understand what racism actually is.
Someday it will be forbidden to call someone black or to mention that they produce more melanin.- Millsee, on 08/12/2008, -6/+20It's racism when you take the piss out of someone for their differences.
YOU need the education. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -18/+3The thing is that they're probably not taking the piss, but just doing that as a cultural reference of china. Can't you acknowledge a difference?
- daliminator, on 08/12/2008, -5/+6"Slanted eyes"... yep. That's exactly what they have. Like a ***** Picasso.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold
Way to be a dickwad. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -18/+5First of all, I'm not a native speaker of English, so maybe the use of the word "slanted" was inappropriate (can you see any similarities with the case at hand?).
Second, as I posted in an answer to someone denying the existence of races:
Jah Bless. - artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -5/+5@Hrodik
Seriously, you're stupid. Stop while you're ahead man, trust me on this. - Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -8/+2I'm stupid.... At least I have educated myself.
You are the real racists because you probably believe that these traits make people inferior and therefore they cannot be mentioned.
Whatever, believe what you will. - jaxcs, on 08/12/2008, -4/+7... black people have dense bones therefore they make bad swimmers....because floating is the most important part of swimming? The funny thing about you is the belief that cherishing and celebrating human diversity also involves limiting what people can or can't do and who they are.
BTW, do Asians have slanted eyes or do white people have unnaturally round eyes? I understand your standard is your standard, but what makes it the correct standard? 1.3 billion people in china would disagree with you and that's not including other Asian ethnicities throughout the world - richito, on 08/12/2008, -3/+5Hrodrik Hrodrik, it's like the less you know the more you elucidate. Your self- education is not helping you. Please stop before Will Farrell hits you over the head with a shovel as you digg yourself deeper into your hole.
- Millsee, on 08/12/2008, -3/+4I suppose then to those that disagree with me, that you'd pull that face at a chinese person face to face, because you think it's harmless?
What's next? Point out to a black person that in general they have bigger lips than white people?
Idiots.
- Millsee, on 08/12/2008, -6/+20It's racism when you take the piss out of someone for their differences.
- jadrian, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2So you're saying that "associating blacks with monkeys" and "associating chinese with people with wide eyes" is the same thing?
- Hrodrik, on 08/12/2008, -29/+10Contrary to this, that is racism. That is comparing black people to simians. This? This is merely a mention that they are in china, WHERE PEOPLE HAVE ***** SLANTED EYES.
- Brandnaem, on 08/12/2008, -20/+5For those who care here are my thoughts when I first looked at the picture.
I don't get it they're just pointing at there heads... no no they're pulling their eyes... why would they.. oh my god they didn't... did they think it would be funny?!? idiots... - dist0rtedwave, on 08/12/2008, -26/+21eh, their eyes are of a different shape. I don't think I would be offended if they grabbed their eyes and made them look like mine. I would probably laugh at them. I don't think everyone in the world is insecure about not looking white, but I could be wrong.
- TheTrueHero, on 08/12/2008, -3/+10exactly
- bicyclethief, on 08/12/2008, -7/+11You've missed the point entirely.
By your logic, it wouldn't be a big deal to call Africans "darkie" because, well, they are dark after all.
The act itself is offensive because the true intent is to ridicule. - suhongy, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2It's like another country giving the finger to America but as a positive gesture. Not everyone in the world would understand the meaning but it's a rude gesture to many Americans nonetheless. Get the significance now!
- saxmaster, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7Absolutely. While I try to abstain from insulting others, ultimately I'm not hurt by anyone else insulting me. It's like the old Zen saying; "If someone comes to you with a gift, and you do not accept it, who does the gift belong to?"
We westerners are so concerned with protecting the poor minorities that we often forget that in a global sense, WE are the minority. I think that all this hubbub about racism is really a western superiority complex. - richito, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1yeah, you are wrong, grand wizard.

Too bad Ron Artest and the rest of the Pacers aren't on the team.
- Oblivision, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2 The world champions (I mean... Spain), just beat China. This "offensive gesture" u see in the picture isn´t offensive anywhere outside the States. I am from Madrid, and for me it´s first news it could be offensive. If u don´t want ppl to generalize about the americans and how fat, arrogant and violent they are, don´t generalize about spaniards.
There aren´t swastikas on the wall here, nor a big concern about racism (as they have in Russia, Germany, or Austria, countries where the racist party has political power).
What is actually going to be offensive, and that´s for sure, is the way we are going to make u bite the dust. Hello Gasol!!, good bye Bryant!!
- DustyMagnum, on 08/12/2008, -3/+4USA! USA! USA! USA!
- artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -10/+57I don't get Spanish players and fans, ESPECIALLY in soccer. - artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -2/+2And pretty much every other sport in Spain for that matter. Do a quick search on youtube for " Spanish Racism Soccer" and prepare to be totally disgusted.
- CatoRules, on 08/12/2008, -2/+0Do a quick search on youtube for "Hooligans" and prepare to be totally disgusted(BTW hooligans are the english soccer supporters). In Spain don't exists any organitation like KKK because it's illegal. You americans can't say the same.
- artfiend77, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2In Europe you guys never had any civil rights protests that gave equal rights to foreigners and minorities. As such, you are still stuck in the early 1900's in terms of human rights and civil rights for minorities. And how are you going to compare a bunch of drunken and rowdy ( granted, violent) Hooligans to a bunch of racists ***** both ON the field and OFF insulting and taunting THEIR OWN DAMN players? And before saying the KKK is illegal, you might want to look up Neo Nazi organizations in Spain before sounding like a fool.
- CatoRules, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1We don't need any civil rights protests because foreigners and minorities has already the same rigths. I don't know why you suppose to know the laws in Europe but here every person has the same rigths wherever they come (1900's???? do you think in Europe there's slaves or somethin like that??? here there's no death penalty). Furthermore, here there is a free health system that warrants that everybody has access to health care without paying even if they are foreigners or they don't contribute to it(In Spain for sure), also Spain Government helps inmigrants to have a house. I don't know if you know thatBritish people has the 'Spanish hunting day' where they chase spanish which are studying in England and hit them. Hooligans are the most violence soccer supporters in Europe and they also makes racist comments but the english press is not interested in them. Not all spanish are racist artfiend77 just some, like in any other country. And the migration policy in US is racist.

In Spain we say: "You see the speck of dust in the other's eye but you don't see the beam in yours"
- Hangingtree, on 11/04/2008, -1/+2I love how everytime some jackass from another country does something stupid there is always a handful of idiots who always say "well America is worse"
- ficious, on 08/12/2008, -1/+15Completely agree. I spent a lot of time there years ago.
- meanswing, on 08/12/2008, -14/+4Racism is still rampid? Everyone should breed interacially and make this problem go away. Pretty sure the spanish knew that it would be inappropriate to do that.

- chupamela, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Parece penoso que las unicas referencias al español que podais hacer, sean simplemente frases tontas sacadas del Mexicano.....
La paradoja de que los americanos sois tontos, una vez más es confirmada..
Chup Amela!
- captoftheworld, on 08/12/2008, -30/+10I THINK IT'S FUNNY.
This type of racism only works when the "target" is offended.
Ignore it.- domomike, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3The Spanish sports scene has a notorious reputation for its racism.

- SissySlapParty, on 08/12/2008, -6/+8Are you serious?
This was a bad idea to begin with. If you aren't pissed off at the obvious cultural insensitivity than you should be at least annoyed by the willful ignorance.
At the end of the day it was still a dumb ***** idea.

- Sroek, on 08/12/2008, -3/+5This comment is an incredible display of sheer ignorance and failure, and precisely why racism is self-perpetuating.
- Cattywampus, on 08/12/2008, -2/+1"2. Forget to reflect on what a typical Chinese person thinks of my race/nation"
It's one thing to have private thoughts about a nation or people, but it's quite another to willingly pose for a photo showing such embarrassing, outdated behavior for an advertisement that, presumably, is intended for perhaps millions of people to see. - SissySlapParty, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1The fact that their national team all took part in a little photo shoot for the idea makes this situation a little different.
But you could be a bit more nonchalant though, I don't quite think your cool enough yet. - richito, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1AZZHOLE!
