Dwyane Wade Named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year
sportsillustrated.cnn.com — Dwyane Wade is Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year, the fifth pro basketball player honored in the 52-year history of the award. Wade led the Miami Heat to the NBA title and earned NBA finals MVP honors last season. He also heads the Dwyane Wade Foundation, which promotes educational and athletic goals through mentoring.

- SlackerCSB, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6Wade had a good year and will be a great player, but with the Katrina tragedy this year, I wish they would have given the award to Sean Payton or one of the other Saints for helping New Orleans forget about themselves for a little while and heal from the devastation.
On another note, it looks like the NBA is trying to build the next Jordan in Wade... the kid gets more calls than anyone since MJ.- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+9Whenn will the Dwyane Wade circle jerk end? Seriously, he's not even the best player in his sport!
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Wade had a good year and will be a great player, but with the Katrina tragedy this year, I wish they would have given the award to Sean Payton or one of the other Saints for helping New Orleans forget about themselves for a little while and heal from the devastation."
katrina was LAST year - donsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sportsman: one who is interested or involved in sports (especially outdoor sports, such as hunting, fishing, etc.); one who displays good sportsmanship. NOT MVP!!
- betasp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10As of today, I would consider him to be one of the classiest guy in the NBA. I am glad he won. I hope he continues to try to be a leader through his actions both on and off the court, and does not follow the same path as many of his peers.
- shirtninjay, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I think as long as he doesn't piss off Shaquille, his reputation will be great. Look what happened to Anfernee Hardaway and Kobe Bryant.
/kidding - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"When accepting the award, Wade tripped going to the podium with nobody around, yet a foul was promptly called on the MC of the ceremony."
^^^^^
That should be in the article. - TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Dwyane Wade seems like a truly nice guy and not tied up in the legal messes a lot of other athletes end up in, ie. No shooting arrests, illegitimate kids, drug busts, etc. Good for him, hopefully he will become a role model for his own peers.
- wabbitman1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Dwayne should be thanking the Refs for this award.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9No doubt. He's seems like a genuinely nice guy, but the calls he got last playoffs made me ill.
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Marquette Alum!
- phil.busch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Here's to hoping Dominic James can be this year's Dwyane Wade!
*crosses fingers*
/Go MU

- Rimrock, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Must have been a slow year for "Sportsman".
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I know lots of stuff about lots of stuff, but when it comes to sports, its surprising how little I know.
I thought it was Dwayne Wayne - from Different World - and in response to incognit0 I thought - he didn't go to Marquette, he went to Hillman.
I think this is what ppl feel like when I speak compu-dork to them, and I can see the eyes glaze over. - michaeldillon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9He's a great athlete and a good guy to boot. I am glad that he won.
- Trigonometron, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Wade is just another puppet, chosen by the league to represent a youthful image. Go NBA!!!
- cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Who the hell cares about this? Why is it on digg?
- Jwoey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14why won't you non-sports fans just stop posting on sports articles?
You have nothing at all to add. - EComni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8http://digg.com/view/sports
That's why. - chokeyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I do. Because others do as well. Any other stupid questions?

- efx102, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's nice to see a nice and humble athlete get the award.
- jeylux, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3i think he's a douche bag. that's just me, and because i'm michigan, i'm bias.
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You are michigan?
- neATL, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1S.I. failed at this award....again. From now on, it should be the "who stayed out of trouble award" because I see no reason why D. Wade deserved this award over any other player on his team. Shaq was more deserving of it in my opinion.
- chokeyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Shaq?!?! LOL... The LA Choke Artist? The Kobe drama queen? The 40% free throw shooter? Gimme a f'n break.
- neATL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@chokeyou:
This award was for last year, not what went on in LA 2 years ago. Without Shaq, Wade doesn't get a ring, Wade doesn't get this award, Wade would be just........Wade. Like Lebron James, a good baller on a OK team. Look at the Miami team now. Shaq is injured and the team is falling fast.
- patience, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Why does Digg have a sports section?
- incognit0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Because it's a news site and sports is news. Dur.
- batfan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Nice to see the NBA's new poster bitch getting more publicity.
It's bad enough he falls down everytime he drives to the
basket and gets phantom calls. It's worse now that he's
got Shaq's ring, not his! He's no Jordan no matter how
much they try to make him into.- Omar12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"He's no Jordan no matter how
much they try to make him into."
No, he is not and no one will. He is Wade and just Wade. He will be the poster player of this generation.
- Omar12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"He's no Jordan no matter how
- jacobmiller, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Should be "American Sportsman of the Year"
As far as I can see there have only been American winners:
http://www.nndb.com/honors/036/000048889/- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would an American magazine give an award outside the scope of their intended audience? It's not like they have a huge curling or rugby section. Even on the SI webpage, the main headings are all US sports.
- NYIslander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last time I checked,Wayne Gretzky ('82) wasn't American and Edmonton is not in the U.S, North American would be more apt.
- FreddieD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You sound surprised that American journalism acts as if nothing exists outside of North America. Our national pastime's final tournament is called the World Series, yet the world is not allowed to participate.
- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would an American magazine give an award outside the scope of their intended audience? It's not like they have a huge curling or rugby section. Even on the SI webpage, the main headings are all US sports.
- nachochease, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3What about Steve Nash??? The guy won back to back MVP awards, and they give the "sportsman of the year" to Wade? They're just trying to make him into the next superstar in order to sell more tickets and get better ratings.
^^^By the way, Nash is Canadian, do I sense an American bias?^^- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not a damn MVP award.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sportsman
sportsman:
1. A man who is active in sports.
2. A person whose conduct and attitude exhibit sportsmanship.
They gave it to Wade not only because he's a good player, but he has good sportsmanship, he's not a dick like many athletes, and he helps out with charities and *****.
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not a damn MVP award.
- Kampbell411, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Omar12 is right! I think Dwayne Wade is the most unselfish player out there. He isnt a ball hog like everyone else in the NBA. Wade is no Jordan, but he definitly deserves this award.
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What about John Cena?
- physcodbzfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2as much as i love Dwayne, he didnt deserve this award...Roger Federer should have won the award, ffs he won 11 out 17 tournaments he entered winning 3 majors, and making it to the finals 16 out of the 17 tournaments...my god...bad choice!
- ScottMitchell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm going to wager that Greg Oden will be the next NBA Sportman of the Year. Either him or LeBron, if the Cleveland GM finally puts a decent team around him and if LeBron makes sure he no longer walks off the court before the game ends...
- extratwice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Who cares? To much emphasis is put on pro athletes in this country. It doesn't matter what these guys can do on the ice, court, field who gives a *****. First year athletes in all these sports make at least 10 times what a teacher makes. (NHL starting salary is around $400,000/year)
How about some big time contracts and press for people that really matter? Doctor of the year? Teacher of the year? Professor of the year?
Good charity by the way, I mean someone has to make sure there will be a new generation of overpaid 'sportsmen'. "OK kids, today we are going to learn about Aston Martins." How about a charity that will ensure that all of our future presidents will not abuse power and embarrass our country? Oh, and that charity should teach future presidents the US Constitution too. - phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heat winning it last season, wade sportsman of the year, the superbowl in miami this year, boy i love living in miami. ***** 76 degrees in this cold ass morning. digg me down, frozen bitches.
- rrunboy12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not too frozen here in San Diego....and we don't have life threatening Hurricanes every year...
On topic, I never knew how good Dwayne Wade was until I saw him in this years playoffs. He has a pure shot and can take anyone to the basket. I agree with him winning this year.
- rrunboy12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not too frozen here in San Diego....and we don't have life threatening Hurricanes every year...
- yuenzzzz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Tiger Woods had a pretty good year too, anybody want to check on that?
- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, not really...
- frantic24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0owned!
- firepig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Duane Wade is a star, he's exciting, he's got hops, and he's humble in an NBA world full of ego. No, they are not trying to make him into a star, he is a star and they are doing what business people always do, use the star to make money. Come on, it's not complicated. But i leave you with this, the powers that reign will do what they do because we live in a capitalist society. By no means does this belittle the fact that Duane Wade dominated the NBA in big games, during clutch moments with humility.
- mydave, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0I love basketball and all news about him. this is my favorite sport.
