- atorchio, on 07/10/2009, -1/+33He's crying bout SCHOLARSHIPS... not grants... not loans... SCHOLARSHIPS!
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -3/+27***** these comments. this guy just poured his heart out for one of if not the most noble things any human being can do - HELP OTHER PEOPLE. he made someone else's life better, and he knows what that really means (everything).
AI gets the MAN OF THE DAY award in my book. - krekc, on 07/10/2009, -3/+24I was crying when we traded Billups for him. :'(
- chuckerton, on 07/09/2009, -3/+23To be fair, he is crying not over his scholarship program, but instead over his perceived public persecution by those who are "out to get him."
Whether you see it as self-pitying or poignant I guess depends on how you view the man. - thetanbark, on 07/10/2009, -1/+15Over-exaggerated on the "bawling" part. "Choked up," as the site headline reads, is more accurate.
- harrisbradley, on 07/10/2009, -2/+16wise ***** words from Mr. Iverson, especially for young men who wish to pursue a career in basketball. my respect-o-meter just went up a little bit
- evodevo1, on 07/10/2009, -1/+13He is growing as a person, and I'm happy for him. I've always loved his toughness on the basketball court. He's had some demons to exorcise, and it looks like he is battling them well. Good for you AI.
- mttwtsn, on 07/09/2009, -2/+11That's a good point. And making a big deal about how people never pay attention to the good things you do *while holding a press conference to publicize the good things you do* seems weird.
But still, the whole scene caught me off guard. - nipterink, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9"It kinda defeats the purpose of giving"
the purpose of giving is to help someone else. anonymity doesn't change the end result. - skinny01, on 07/10/2009, -0/+9I think everyone forgets that these stars are just regular people. Just because they happen to be good at something that a lot of others want to watch doesn't mean that now they are somehow unhuman. If any of our lives where put up on screen like these guys we'd get an awful lot of scrutiny. He's a regular person with regular personal emotions, what's so strange about that unless you forget that he's a real human instead of some tv character created for your personal amusement. It's just like what Charles Barkley used to say in his commercials "I am not a role model", he just plays sports, don't idolize him or put him on a pedestal or try to hold him up to unhuman standards.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+8wrong. he was crying because he affected someone elses life in a positive way. watch it again, right at first it was when he was thinking about the people that have better lives just because of him was when he got choked up. and later he said that public perception still hurt him, but not nearly as much. he was not crying over his public perception, that couldnt be further from the truth.
- realgoat21, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8We sittin here, I'm supposed to be a franchise player, and we're talkin about scholarships. Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We talkin bout scholarships
- hoojx34, on 07/10/2009, -1/+8Good for him.
- xIAMGAMBITx, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5WE TALKIN BOUT PRACTICE???!!
- WhistlinTom, on 07/10/2009, -0/+5Hey PAUSE BUTTON..... get outta the way!!!
- lazybuoy, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4So when you use your own money to establish a scholarship program, you're just going to keep quiet and not let anybody know about? If no one knows about it, how are they going to benefit from the program? It's called marketing.
He hasn't exactly been the paragon of professionalism or good behavior over the years, but I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt here. - vammirato, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5PRACTICE?!?!
- soil, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4to be clear, that's no slam on the man, I respect a man who can be real with his emotions. Even more, I respect a man who is committed to helping others.
- soil, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3Big Bawler
- vicsvenge, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3isnt that the truth... ugh...
- idiotech, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2It wasn't even large-scale marketing... I think that was the point. It was a simple event for the scholarship, and it was in a classroom. If it wasn't for this video, you probably never would have known about this or you never would see it on the news.
Clearly, this wasn't an attempt at wide-scale publicity, like so many other stars and 'press conferences' try to be.
Maybe you guys are once again searching for his flaws, once again.
In fact, he was just responding to the point someone else had made. Someone else had claimed that this scholarship would give Iverson recognition for such good work... and to that point, he responded (it seems quite honestly) that he just doesn't care about that - that's not why he does it, that's never been a reason for him to do things in life, and he was just explaining that. - john2kx, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2yeah, no kidding.. well, at least it was transparent.
- dafragsta, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2TO is clearly ***** up in the head. That more than explains his behavior. He came on to the scene and saw that his talent was enough to get noticed and then he became a superstar. Now, from the points leading up to that, you have NO IDEA what kind of life he had. Maybe he was always bullied and now he needs to prove he's a badass. Maybe he was given an easy life and he'd never known what it was like to be told "No" because he'd always been the superstar. At some point afterwards though, he was taught a pretty tough lesson, and this isn't Leave It to Beaver. I've never seen the true wisdom of my personal mistakes until a good few miles down the road, even when I think I knew what the problem was shortly thereafter.
I'm not saying TO isn't a jerk. I'm saying he's become aware of that, the media keeps harping on it, and he has no means or maturity to deal with it. It doesn't mean he is disingenuously crying for penance. He's crying because of the negative reenforcement he's seen in his life. I'm sure that's true for AI as well, pretty much for the exact same reasons here.
How would you feel if everyone thought you were an egotistical jerk and had no problems telling you about it? These guys have to read article after article dissecting everything wrong with their lives. Very few people get that kind of attention and the media only creates drama around things that are really good or really bad. If your life was under the spotlight and you knew there was no doubt it was almost entirely to highlight your *****, you'd probably feel pretty overwhelmed too. - Korberos, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Which in hindsight was foolish, since they would still hear the rapping... and they'd be blind.
- PointGiven, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2Nope, that would be Paul Pierce ;)
- liljay2k, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2PRACTICE?!?!
- Korberos, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1If only we were all so lucky...
- WhistlinTom, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1yeah what was that all about.
- johnnyblazepw, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1the Grizzlies are in talks with him about signing him for whatever thats worth. I guess he doesnt have a formal contract offer, but unless he pulls a Sprewell and won't take a paycut, he will have a job this year for sure
- idiotech, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Actually, he was just responding to the point someone else had made. Someone else had claimed that this scholarship would give Iverson recognition for such good work... and to that point, he responded (it seems quite honestly) that he just doesn't care about that - that's not why he does it, that's never been a reason for him to do things in life, and he was just explaining that.
He was definitely right about one thing - you can never prevent people from searching for flaws and criticism. - driggle14, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1Touching... especially with Kenny G tearin it up for the intro/outro.
- EvilDeadAsh, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1produced by Joe Fudge...
- Korberos, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1dugg because I'm so sick of the ads before I get to a page...
- EvilDeadAsh, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1It's a great feeling. To help people. Kinda makes you so proud you really wanna cry.
- tayf, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Anyone know what the song is called?
- Bhu8888, on 07/10/2009, -0/+0And of course we were happy to let him go to get Billups back.
- chincopanda, on 07/10/2009, -3/+3When I first glanced at the title I thought it said "Alien Invasion....."
- Jeepy, on 07/10/2009, -1/+1He should be crying about the fact that not a single team has offered to sign him as a free agent including his current one.
- Astark, on 07/10/2009, -0/+0To be fair, he was high at the time.
- mikeas, on 07/10/2009, -2/+2I bet he wasn't crying when he was throwing chairs at people at a bowling alley in Hampton.
- bde5, on 07/10/2009, -3/+2It's a great feeling. To help people. Kinda makes you so proud you wanna cry.
- Lc5827, on 07/10/2009, -2/+1Re: Iverson's past and his present - congratulations to him and his words to young men who wish to pursue a career in basketball - today, was the first day for the rest of his life!
- bde5, on 07/10/2009, -4/+2It's a great feeling. To help people. Kinda makes you so proud you cry.
- thacked, on 07/10/2009, -4/+2He's right about Michael Jackson. Jackson touched plenty of young people during his life.
- ae2198, on 07/10/2009, -4/+1come on man! we talkin bout scholarship programs?! scholarship programs?!
- tspchen, on 07/10/2009, -6/+2"Introducing Applebee's..."
*closes tab* - MonstersAGoGo, on 07/10/2009, -5/+1Maybe he should have practiced that first.
- pidge, on 07/10/2009, -9/+3I've always hated when people name scholarships after themselves. It kinda defeats the purpose of giving since you are advertising yourself. I like it better when they name it after some else. Even if you name it after your kid who passed away is fine. Just don't name it after yourself.
