- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -95/+430I guess $450 million for three new players really can win the World Series for you.
- Kerafyrm, on 11/05/2009, -28/+239Highest paid teams to win World Series (adjusted for inflation):
1. Yankees, 2009 - $201,449,289
2. Red Sox, 2007 - $148,980,000~
3. Red Sox, 2004 - $145,540,000~
4. Yankees, 2000 - $116,560,000~
5. Yankees, 1999 - $114,250,000~
The Red Sox have held the record for the last 5 years before the Yankees won in 2009.
Also, Matsui was sheer greatness in this series. - kingofinternet, on 11/05/2009, -18/+195breaking: godzilla destroys philadelphia
- angrytortilla, on 11/05/2009, -43/+220Exciting game. Matsui's a beast.
- TommyGunn32, on 11/05/2009, -27/+172"Just because your team won, it doesn't make you less of a douchebag."
Tshirts anyone? - jrobbi, on 11/05/2009, -202/+343YANKEES SUCK
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/05/2009, -39/+146The typical reply win the Yankees win. Bottom line, the OWNERS voted against a hard cap. If owners are so up in arms because of Yankee spending, ask yourself, why did *they* vote against a salary cap? Maybe because they like the free money and don't care as much about winning as they would have their fans believe?
Also, what about the teams that make money but refuse to put that money back into their product? The Pittsburgh Pirates are the perfect example. Their team makes money, yet their payroll is minuscule. Why? Because the owners run the team like a business and couldn't care less about actually winning. They've gotten rid of every single top prospect. Every team keeps at least *one* big ticket player, except for the Pirates. Keep swallowing the team mantra: "Oh, the Yankees spend sooooo much! We can't stand it!" Then they quietly pocket the luxury tax money and buy more yachts!
Look, as a Yankees fan I'm all for a salary cap. I agree, it gets boring seeing the same familiar faces every year. HOWEVER, there also has to be a salary minimum. Otherwise, too many owners do nothing but take their profits and pocket them. $150 salary cap, $80 salary minimum. I'd have no problem with that. - Dr3w, on 11/05/2009, -46/+144Now that's the way to break in a stadium!
- ClaireQuilty, on 11/05/2009, -5/+97I was just glad to see a series go longer than five games.
- rwbrinso, on 11/05/2009, -56/+138Boy all that time between titles and I still hate them just as much. Kind of amazing, really.
- jakekickass, on 11/05/2009, -24/+101The Yankees account for 1/6th of baseballs total revenue. Why shouldn't they be able to spend some of it?
- pudgyv, on 11/05/2009, -37/+113<SIGH> We now have to listen to insufferable Yankee fans for a whole year.
- mattillac, on 11/05/2009, -48/+106YANKEES SUCK
- felsoule79, on 11/05/2009, -103/+151***** the yankees
- Trifold, on 11/05/2009, -0/+46As a not-a-Yankees fan, I have to admit you have a point. When the Marlins have a total payroll of LESS than what they get from revenue sharing, there's a problem.
- NateHKA, on 11/05/2009, -14/+59As an A's fan I'm glad Nick Swisher finally got his ring. Guy is a class act and put everything he had into every play. Congrats Nick, we miss you.
- anizzle, on 11/05/2009, -1/+45Yankees make money, they spend money, and they win.
It makes me sick as a Twins fan knowing that we have the richest owner in ALL of baseball but would never go out an buy players. There is even discussion (mostly fear) that the owners won't resign Mauer. - mbonzo531, on 11/05/2009, -7/+44Yea with $132 million payroll those phillies are really a scrappy team.
- funkedup, on 11/05/2009, -2/+34I know, that was a ridiculous performance by him. Definitely an MVP. Just think, if that double went 1 foot further than he would have set the all-time RBI record. Still, 6 RBI's in any game is an insane feat, let alone a world series.
- NickFrenzy, on 11/05/2009, -18/+49***** THE YANKEES
- jordanlgta, on 11/05/2009, -9/+39The Yankees Assistant to the Traveling Secretary has a prediction from the past that came true:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZz_rbAmfmY - mbonzo531, on 11/05/2009, -6/+35Because then the Marlins can steal more of the Yankees money from revenue sharing! (FYI Marlins spend $22 million on payroll and receive $25 million from the MLB for revenue sharing plus their $200 million revenue, a bunch of thieves in that front office.)
- rockon4life45, on 11/05/2009, -2/+30Hideki Matsui had many RBIs today FOR GREAT HONOR.
- Jabrams2, on 11/05/2009, -77/+101As a HUGE Mets fan, it was bittersweet, but still AMAZING to see the Phillies lose. Congrats Yanks
- jud420, on 11/05/2009, -11/+33Matsui, in a press release this morning, had this to say: "afhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk yhoooooooooooooo phirries!!!!!"
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/05/2009, -15/+35Team to spend the least amount of money on their team relative to what they make over the last 17 years?
The Pittsburgh Pirates.
Again, I'm all for hard salary caps, as long as there's also salary minimums. There are too many owners who cry poverty to their fans, then pocket the luxury tax money. The Steinbrenners are not *nearly* the richest owners in baseball. They just make more from baseball than other owners make *from baseball*. So what does that tell you? Owners run their team like a business! They have the money to spend, but they simply don't want to because they don't think it's a good business bet.
You won't see me shedding a tear for super rich owners who refuse to spend money on their team. GO YANKEES!!!! - indubitably, on 11/05/2009, -8/+28it was AMAZING to see the mets finish 23 games out of first.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/05/2009, -5/+24Ya with only the Phillies, Red Sox, Cardinals, White Sox, Marlins, Angels and Diamondbacks winning the world series between Yankee victories I can see why as a competitive sports fan you hate the Yankees.
/s - ccyr, on 11/05/2009, -5/+23Of course, in both 2004 and 2007, the Yankees still had a higher payroll than the Red Sox, they just didn't make it to the World Series...
- Kerafyrm, on 11/05/2009, -2/+202008 Philadelphia Phillies ($98,269,881)
vs.
2008 Tampa Bay Rays ($43,820,598)
The Rays also know how it feels to be defeated by a team with a payroll that is more than double their own. - Kerafyrm, on 11/05/2009, -5/+23Yes, otherwise they wouldn't have the huge media revenue from the YES Network (as a result of all the people following them outside New York).
- brsteve88, on 11/05/2009, -4/+21^ proof of why people hate the Yankees.
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/05/2009, -3/+20"You really think the pirates make as much as the yankees but the execs pocket it all?"
*Dude*, clearly you ***** don't know how to read. First off, where within my post did I say that the Pirates make as much money as the Yankees? Where? Re-read it again. Here, I'll help you by copying and pasting it.
"Their team makes money, yet their payroll is minuscule."
Notice, NOWHERE in there did I say they make as much money from baseball as the Yankees do. If you're going to argue, learn how to read first...dude!
And again, the *baseball owners* (I have to emphasize everything because reading doesn't seem to be your strongest skill) voted against a salary cap. Yes, we all agree that salary caps (don't forget the salary minimums) would bring more parity to baseball. So I ask you; who's fault is that? You want to blame the Yankees for something that all of the owners voted against?
Look, you can hate the Yankees all you want. But try and keep your brain inside your head during your hate-fest. - Spuy767, on 11/05/2009, -29/+46Yankees Buy 27th World Series
There, I fixed it. - Kannebas, on 11/05/2009, -2/+17Has someone put out an Amber Alert for Ryan Howard?
/disgruntled_Phillies_fan - TommyGunn32, on 11/05/2009, -4/+19buried like your comment?
"sports suck, wah, im a 12 year old punk rock kid.. ***** everything, anarchy rules.." - ferret15, on 11/05/2009, -5/+20Steinbrenner built the Yankees from a $10M franchise when he bought it from CBS in the 70's to over 1.2 Billion. Props to him. Yankees win! Man I'm excited to be in manhattan on Friday.
- audioslavery, on 11/05/2009, -99/+113As a fan of competitive professional sports, ***** THE YANKEES.
Hired Goons. - danomolis, on 11/05/2009, -6/+20Meanwhile, we're walking around Philly saying "***** it...at least we aren't he Mets!"
- MontagGuy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+14Is that why the Cardinals managed to pull that off three years ago in the debut year of the new Busch Stadium?
- dbossnirvana, on 11/05/2009, -4/+17Only 9 years and $1.5 billion gets you another ring.
- TriplePlay2425, on 11/05/2009, -8/+21Hate the Yankees.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/05/2009, -4/+17I rather have an owner who spends his cash on the team rather than pocketing the money himself and trades away any good players. The indians had CC sabathia and Cliff Lee and traded away both.
- soulonfire928, on 11/05/2009, -0/+13I may be a Yankees fan, but I don't really think the Phillies sucked at all. They played well - and they brought the series to 6 games and back to NY. A team that sucks dick wouldn't have been able to do that.
- brainboy7777, on 11/05/2009, -10/+23THHHHEEEE YAAANKEEES WIN!
- ohhaiitsryan, on 11/05/2009, -0/+12no way man! you mean you actually called it that the yankees would win it all the way back in spring training?? holy *****, i think only like every other sports fan who ever was a sports fan said that about their favorite team too!
- schroderr224, on 11/05/2009, -2/+14Get over yourself. Your team won one world series this century. Not very impressive for all that money spent.
- PolarBearFire, on 11/05/2009, -2/+14Who peed in your cereal?
- PointGiven, on 11/05/2009, -3/+15Your tears help to sustain us evil New Yorkers.
- pear1jamten, on 11/05/2009, -4/+16As a Yankee fan I finally applaud a classy comment.
