- pinchduck, on 11/03/2009, -2/+7OK, listen up kids: One of the huge benefits of sports is that it allows us primates to exercise our "us" vs "them" territoriality in a ritualistic, non-violent way. That's why I go to football games and scream and yell and create as much noise as possible to distract the opposing team on offense. Before and after the game, I can socialize with supporters of the other team, share a beer or two, and talk trash. Non-violently. At the end of the contest, there is one victor and one loser, and we go our respective ways, either happy or disappointed. We can then go home to our families, jobs, responsibilities and whatnot having given vent to our primal urges in a socially acceptable way. No one is injured or killed. That works out for everyone much better than two clods squaring off over a stupid game. Writ large, wouldn't the world (and our budget) be in much better shape if W and Saddam had settled their differences over a rousing game of badminton in Switzerland? Say what you will about W, I'll bet he totally could have kicked Saddam's ass at badminton.
