- nicholasdog, on 04/23/2008, -1/+286So that's what natural talent looks like
- wynja, on 04/23/2008, -7/+256Ken Griffey Jr. is the greatest baseball player of our generation, and it's shameful that he is not given enough credit.
- BinaryDelt, on 04/23/2008, -0/+132If Ken Griffey Jr. had stayed away from injuries, we might be celebrating 700.
- Ganja420, on 04/23/2008, -1/+115Ken Griffey Jr. for the SNES is a badass game
- inactive, on 04/23/2008, -4/+116I, too, am forced to quietly make history in the shadows.
- krahzee, on 04/23/2008, -2/+90I think it's been so quiet for two reasons:
1) he's been hurt so many times in the last few years, it just seems like a shame that he couldn't have stayed healthy enough to get to the all time record.
2) knowing how far away he still is from the record, when we just had Bonds last year along with the assumption that A-rod has the best shot to beat him, people just sort of view him as a great player, but they truely do not understand how great he has been. - badenglishihave, on 04/23/2008, -7/+72Cricket is the most retarded sport ever.
Digg me up, Americans! - uptown, on 04/23/2008, -4/+59He's quite adept at making the DL list each season.
- BlueDevil2k, on 04/23/2008, -5/+59Too bad he can't break Bonds' record, so we don't have a roid head with the most hallowed record in sports.
- HookmasterCH47, on 04/23/2008, -0/+43Bring back Ken Griffey Jr's Slugfest!
- inactive, on 04/23/2008, -1/+42Ken Griffey Jr was my childhood baseball hero (when I still paid attention to baseball). It's great to see him still accomplishing feats like this.
- flashingcurser, on 04/23/2008, -1/+40This is somewhat scary from a guy who calls himself "johnnyHotBalls". Jus sayin....
- tman84, on 04/23/2008, -0/+30Sweetest Swing in all of baseball. It's a joy to watch him at bat.
- Seemefearme, on 04/23/2008, -3/+33Randy Johnson + Ken Griffey Jr. > Steroids
- Enfenestrate, on 04/23/2008, -0/+26Well yes. He'd have much better numbers if he didn't spend so much time on the DL
- Jwoey, on 04/23/2008, -0/+25... he has 18 diggs... and you only posted this 3 minutes ago. Why is it you think its over our heads?
- inactive, on 04/23/2008, -5/+29Id say its more likely that McCain is the next president then Griffey being a cheater.
Thats why I love the guy, you can just tell hes honest and hardworking.
Greatly underrated. - anarchyinthekr, on 04/23/2008, -1/+23i think jr. was definitely on roids in the mid 90s, what about the offseason he went from 120 lbs. to 123?!
- flashingcurser, on 04/23/2008, -0/+21Those were the days. Great Seattle baseball.
- solesoul, on 04/23/2008, -0/+20You admit to using performance enhancing cheats!?
Ken Griffey Jr. would be ashamed. - DrKillJoy, on 04/23/2008, -0/+20He has the most beautiful swing in the game! Just raw talent, everyone above me is right. Had he been roided up and under suspicion 600 would be all over the news.
- meruru, on 04/23/2008, -0/+20If you ignore the fact that stadiums sell out every week, sports draw rather large Nielsen ratings on TV, and espn.com has a higher Alexa rating than digg, then yes you are correct.
- austin63, on 04/23/2008, -0/+19rhetorical sarcasm?
- tdishman, on 04/23/2008, -1/+19I seem to recall (from my baseball card collecting youth) that he was on pace one season to break the single-season HR record and then the league went on strike. What a bummer. I loved watching him as a kid.
- Lutremi, on 04/23/2008, -0/+18"Performance enhancing equipment"? Like what, a treadmill? If it's not a substance then I would assume it's legit. Please stop being a conspiracy nut.
- meruru, on 04/23/2008, -0/+163) It's a milestone but not a record.
Bond's chase was for an all time record that's why there was all that hoopla about it. Griffey's 600th HR is on par with of 3000 K's or 3000 hits, and you don't see countdowns and in games cut-ins for any of those milestones either. - SniperZ, on 04/23/2008, -0/+16Poor Griffey, he would have easily had the HR record if he didnt get hurt every 12 seconds in the last ~7 years...
- livejamie, on 04/23/2008, -1/+15It's like a party in my mouth, and everyone's invited!
- jspegele, on 04/23/2008, -0/+14I understand that it's hard to pick up sarcasm in a digg comment, but come on. 120 lbs? That didn't do it for you?
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/23/2008, -0/+13Many speculate because he refused to get into the weight room his body started breaking down on him. Of course, if he stayed injury-free, bulked up a little and was approaching 700 home runs, he'd be accused of being on PEDs.
- inactive, on 04/23/2008, -0/+12I don't know why this comment is getting dug down... it's pretty much the truth. Griffey is just some non-cheating family man who plays as hard as he can and never gets in trouble with the law. Watch Sportscenter sometime... they don't devote much time to guys like Griffey... Pacman Jones and Barry Bonds get more viewers.
- Cattywampus, on 04/23/2008, -0/+12It's a shame he hasn't gotten more recognition for this. And as others have said, he'd have a lot more homers if it wasn't for his many injuries.
KG Jr. just goes out and does his job, doesn't get juiced, doesn't get headlines for getting into trouble, etc. He's kind of a throwback to an earlier era, in a good way.
His dad was a pretty decent player himself. - sugarazor, on 04/23/2008, -0/+12Well considering Griffey's name wasn't in the Mitchell Report, the guy's never been fined or suspended and he's never even been accused of drug use, I think it's a safe assumption.
- MrMcGuire, on 04/23/2008, -0/+12Griffey was always my favorite baseball player growing up. Griffey baseball cards were like currency to me and my friends. "Okay, I'll trade you this rare Chipper Jones, ARod, and Nomar Garciaparra for that Griffey." Good times. Every pack we'd buy we hoped to get a Griffey. He has been hurt a lot, but he has always been a great ball player. Kudos...
- vadimus, on 04/23/2008, -1/+12If you payed any attention to Griffey over the years, you'd know why he's adept at making the DL List...
Because he plays the game with reckless abandon.. like every ball hit his way counts.
He was merely unlucky that his body couldn't keep up with his mind, but it shows how much natural talent he has that even after all these injuries and years sitting out, he can still play at a such a high level. - WilliamDavis, on 04/23/2008, -0/+11Yeah, but Randy Johnson was taking some sort of drugs that made him look like a rooster. It's very unfair when a pitcher distracts batters like that.
- Cattywampus, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11You gotta love cricket, if only for introducing the word "googly" into the vocabulary.
- mikey0787, on 04/23/2008, -0/+10more like 800.
- asskicker32, on 04/23/2008, -1/+11I dont recall there being that much hoopla around Bonds reaching 600. There was when he broke 660 and 700, and 714, and 755. Im sure when he is 1 or 2 away, they will break to him.
I completely agree, though, that Griffey Jr. is considered one of the greatest players of our generation and he is still grossly underrated. - Misinformant, on 04/23/2008, -2/+12It's because of that damn Reds uniform he insists on wearing.
Though the Cincinnati have really improved their pitching staff and I expect we'll hear more of them later in the season. - imacommi, on 04/23/2008, -19/+29I bet if he was using drugs people would have noticed, and this would be all over the news... The MSM loves contraversy it spells big ratings.
- cfuddd, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9Both aren't improbable.
- Royal0rleans, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9Isn't saying "DL list" a little redundant?
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/23/2008, -0/+9Actually, Griffey has been maligned for *not* working out and taking care of his body. Many speculate this is the reason his body started breaking down on him when he went to Cincinnati. Now if you have some actual evidence (e.g. links from credible news sources) that claim he used PEDs in the past, post it. Otherwise, you're just shooting in the dark.
Now the only "performance enhancing equipment" I can think of would be the elbow and wrist guards that batters wear. I've heard many a person complain that batters shouldn't be allowed to have such equipment when in the batter's box. Of course, these same people don't mind when it took Nomar over two years to fully recover from being hit on the wrist. If my body was my livelihood, I'd do everything to protect it...just as you would. - griffeycom, on 04/23/2008, -2/+11^^^ Griffey was my favorite player back when I was younger, still is my favorite player, finally got to see him a few years ago when he came to Cincinnati. I've used this screen name for about 10 years now, made it in honor of him!
- Svengalus, on 04/23/2008, -0/+8I'm glad to have been a Mariner fan when I could go see Griffey/Johnson/A-Rod.
Good times. - robotderek42, on 04/23/2008, -0/+8He just drank that nerve tonic and suffered from Gigantism. He was wheel-chair bound! How is that cheating?
- homah, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9howard has no chance as he started in the majors too late. arod should break the record, though.
- slvrbullet87, on 04/23/2008, -1/+9The maple leaf gives you away... ***** the canadians!
Digg me up Americans for picking on our little brother! - repick3, on 04/23/2008, -0/+8Anyone remember Ken Griffey Jr's Slugfest.... that was the *****!
