- milesmparker, on 10/06/2009, -1/+34really this is a personal issue. with that said, if a team commits $150 million to you, you should really make sure you are performing at your highest level, especially during critical situations like last weekend.
- aaronisreal, on 10/06/2009, -0/+25As a fan, I don't take issue with the fact that he was out drinking after the game. The domestic abuse aspect to this sounds awful, but that's really a personal issue.
What I have a problem with, as a fan, is that he was out until 6:00 AM. How can you possibly be prepared to perform at your best in the game that evening, when you were out partying until until 6:00 AM? - asskicker32, on 10/06/2009, -3/+25No kidding? I was ALSO very inebriated between Detroit's two games over the weekend; at least 3 times the legal limit as well. Good thing I didnt drive or play baseball.
- krets, on 10/06/2009, -0/+14Did Ruth go 0-11 with 2 K's in three important season ending games?
- SpoonMSU, on 10/06/2009, -0/+11He had a .26 at 7am. He played later that day. If he wasn't still intoxicated, he was at the very least massively hungover. So, yes, it is an issue.
- SpoonMSU, on 10/06/2009, -0/+9Different times. MLB players get paid a lot more these days.
If you worked for a major corporation and showed up drunk or massively hungover, botched a major deadline, and all the stakeholders found out, do you think you'd get a free pass just because that's how business was done last century? - LordBalderdash, on 10/06/2009, -0/+8if he blew a .26 at 6am then yeah, he was probably still technically drunk at game time.
- meed, on 10/06/2009, -4/+12So what? Babe Ruth use to be sauced up in the dugout all the time...
- DrVic, on 10/06/2009, -0/+8Amateur...
Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter while he was tripping on acid in 1970 for the Dodgers.
http://www.snopes.com/sports/baseball/ellis.asp - freeridstylee, on 10/06/2009, -2/+7It wasn't that he was out drinking, it was that he was ***** hammered. He blew a .26 at 6 in the morning. I'm pretty sure John Bonham died at somewhere around a .30 bac.
- suavivity, on 10/06/2009, -0/+5I'm pretty sure Babe Ruth was not paid $150 million. For me that's the key issue.
- aaronisreal, on 10/06/2009, -0/+5Whether he's a great hitter over his career is not the point; he definitely is, so far. The point is that he turned in disappointing performances in critical games over a mostly-disappointing weekend. This looks like a lack of focus and fans have a right to be upset about it for that reason.
If he had turned in a good weekend at the plate, then this wouldn't be a story. It's bad timing. - aaronisreal, on 10/06/2009, -0/+5Yeah, except went 0-11 on the series.
- hawksfan03, on 10/06/2009, -0/+4he was out until 5 am the night before his team played a must win game. as the team captain i think he'd be smarter than that
- Alli3388, on 10/06/2009, -0/+4YOu can't compare rock stars to athletes. It's the guy's job to be in tip top physical condition for the games. He wouldn't be if he's hungover. Every little bit counts when you're an athlete. Also, there is very likely something in his contract about this kind of thing.
- aaronisreal, on 10/06/2009, -1/+5Try .260...
...and no wonder? Do you even know who Miguel Cabrera is? - SpoonMSU, on 10/06/2009, -0/+3Yeah but Slash nails those solos. Cabrera went 0-for-4 and stranded six. He does NOT get paid to do that for a living, and if the alcohol played a factor in that, then it's not a "non-issue."
- zetamilk, on 10/06/2009, -1/+3Didn't seem to effect him that much. So far 2 for 3 with a 2-run home run.
- SpoonMSU, on 10/06/2009, -1/+3Actually it's quite a big deal in Detroit, and apparently it's big enough of a deal for you to comment on it.
- Trigonometron, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Damn I bet that hangover really makes standing around for 4 hours tough.
- flamesrule, on 10/06/2009, -0/+1both Cabrera and Leyland need to go if the Tigers lose today. You can't lose a 7 game lead with two weeks to go unless you are trying to. The players look unimpressed, listless and like they couldn't care about the playoffs and Leyland, that's your fault.
- pinchduck, on 10/06/2009, -1/+2Bobby Layne was half in the bag at the start of the games. He didn't sober up until halftime. Bob Probert was known to enjoy a drink (or 10). We have a long history of drunk athletes in this town. And their teams won championships. I'm just sayin'...
- valetudomexican, on 10/06/2009, -1/+2Yeah, he's the wife beating slugger on my favorite baseball team.
- spliao, on 10/06/2009, -5/+5meh, i would care more if he was drunk during the games and still hit over 30HR and 100RBI. cause i am not even mad, thats just amazing.
- ace429k, on 10/06/2009, -6/+4Whose your Tiger?
No one wants to win that division. They all stink. - inactive, on 10/06/2009, -3/+0If he were a 1 man team, perhaps that would be understandable.
- inactive, on 10/06/2009, -3/+0Maybe he just sucks ;)
Babe Ruth as a drunken slob and performed well. For his time, anyway.. - inactive, on 10/06/2009, -10/+6Alcohol is legal, you know.
Was he drunk at the games? No?
Non issue. - nelson8403, on 10/06/2009, -8/+4probably at some point he went 0-11 or maybe even worse babe ruth didn't hit 1.000 his entire career
- Alli3388, on 10/06/2009, -6/+1Some guy called the police because he was saying mean things to some other guy?... Call 911!!! The man called that other man fat and stupid!!!!
- valetudomexican, on 10/06/2009, -7/+2No wonder the team's batting average is <.200
- densetsu23, on 10/06/2009, -12/+6OMG! He was intoxicated on a completely legal substance! Stop the presses!
/s - jblanch, on 10/06/2009, -10/+4oh wow this is so front page worthy! ATTENTION EVERYBODY: BASEBALL PLAYERS ARE HUMANS
- urbanetruth, on 10/06/2009, -10/+2not a big deal in Detroit
- inactive, on 10/06/2009, -9/+0Because that's what they do for a living?
Just like, "How can Slash be strung out and completely drunk yet belt out a 7 minute solo?"
If you're trained and used to playing games like that, it's almost a non-issue what you were doing the night before. Now if you were to run a 26 mile marathon and you only do it a few times a year... yeah, you'll suffer.
