- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31As a detroit fan let me say this: Sheffield is a racist idiot.
- clark24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12What a clown!
- mac3687, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I guess he forgot how Bernie Williams was treated like a God in that city for the last 15ish years
- freeb26, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Has he ever said anything nice about anyone? He clearly sucks on a lot of lemons.
- Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13On Friday, Sheffield said he doesn't speak with Bonds.
"We don't have no communication,"
Indeed! - Linkin4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7As a Yankee fan let me say I agree with you, he's one of the great hitters in the game, but unfortunately because he can not keep his mouth shut he is one of the most dangerous people to the sport. Gotta hand it to him, dissing the Yankees is a stellar way to get your name on the front page, what were the words of PT Barnum, I don't care what you say about me, as long as you spell my name right? Good work Sheff.
- mattmollysdad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Sheffield is a great ball player and an idiot. When he was a Dodger he could have owned LA but got into a pissing argument with management and then started with the, "they don't show me respect" then toped it off with the "race *****". I wish he was still here but wonder why anyone from the press asks him anything... next season he'll be ranting about the Tigers.
- terrordome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6That's one of the stupidest things I've read all day.
- Gastrodamus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5As much as I like Magic Shef, I think he's losing it a little.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2891875 - jverdi, on 05/11/2009, -1/+4Umm.. no. it IS a bad thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separate_but_equal
- scotus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5i don't doubt the possibility that managers in major league baseball could treat black and white players differently. the league is very insular, and there are lots of racial issues still lurking.
but coming from sheffield's mouth, i can't take it seriously. he apparently thinks he is god's gift to baseball and beyond reproach. he's also obsessed with some clannish idea of respect. Coaches have lots of different ways of trying to motivate people, some of them not so nice. sheffield apparently wants to do things his own way and expect not to be criticized for it. - hiphoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yea, but look how he was treated on his way out.
- MrTea, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Derek Jeter is black?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sheffield is a moron. Always has been.
- supaklaw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Not to mention Sheffield was at that video shoot with Cooleo where some third tier dude got whacked in the middle of the night... yeah, let's all go shoot some video at 2 AM... some other gangstas show up, shoot the punk right in front of everyone... the cops come and suddenly noone saw nothing. Gee, you are just a stand up respectable citizen, with all your gangsta posturing, black thug attitude, and then expect anyone to show you respect? Shut the F up. Get another tattoo and peace out with your homeys but don't walk around expecting a business or managers to look at you like that's cool, seriously. Thug culture really needs to lay off the crack, the Gambinos don't go crying that the cops don't respect them.
- hiphoc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7No, white people just need to grow their balls. Somehow society has cowered white men into guilt for what their ancestors have done. Why is it OK for black and Hispanic comedians to make fun of white stereotypes, but when whites do it its racist. I am black, and I want everyone to speak freely. This self censorship ***** is Stalin's dream. It is the greatest form of control. Not talking about politics in polite company got us these ass clowns in the white house. Speak your mind people, but if I punch you in the mouth for it, take it like a man.
- Portfolioso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That wasn't Torre's fault.
- CoolJammer00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Bernie Williams is Puerto Rican.
- gojeda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sheffield sounds like he is still bitter that he was shown the door out of the Yankee clubhouse.
He is a liability to any team - even when he is hitting .330 with 35 homeruns. His mouth becomes the focus, and any team is distracted by his verbal diarrhea. - ookees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2what he should realize is that he is not 100% black, not many black born Americans are. Many black people who had ancestry in this country has a small percentage of white blood in them anyways. The only Blacks who are mostly still pure blooded are Africans. So he should stop being racist and think before he speaks.
- ChicagoDawg71, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Hiphoc is not speaking for black people, he is speaking for himself. No where does he say he is speaking for black people, he is stating his opinion. Thats why it is filled with 'I this' and 'I that'.
- phycon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The only time Sheffield is happy is when he is complaining and accusing everybody's a racist.
Thank god he's not a Dodger anymore!
Good luck Detroit Fans, you can have the bum! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2After reading this, getting Abreu was the best move we made.
- reddfox321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1LOL, there was a HUGE article about this in ESPN magazine by a Latin American guy basically saying Shef is right and praising him for standing up for Latin players.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2894650
Even his Latin teammate Carlos Guillen THANKED him.
Fact is the MLB finds Latin players easier to intimidate and exploit and black people aren't falling for it anymore. - ezkash, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Can't we all just get along? http://ndfdhdf.menew.whyi.org
- Modulo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to be completely racism free in many industries." Well. That's.. frankly, a bizarre statement. Would you care to share with us the reasoning, if there was any, that led you to this conclusion?
- JonathanHemlock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"House Negro" is b---s---- code telling us that any African of slave descent who has good manners is an Uncle Tom. The problem for society is that thuggery usually wins--they manage to drag the debate down into the ghetto. This is real simple. Past slavery doesn't justify present thuggery. Ever. Anyone who participates is just a bad human living the life of self-indulgence, sex or drugs or alcohol, and latching onto the current stream of popular justification. Hell, I'm a white guy and my goal in life would be to have the manners of a "good house Negro." The world is filled with monstrous egos whining that they're not getting the deference they deserve, or vilely abusing other people. The difficult life is to keep the focus on yourself and to keep your own side of the street clean. Rich physical freaks like Sheffield are only interested in using their money and power to create a free field of play for their own arrogant and uncontrolled behavior. Forgetting his race, he's another rich man drunk on his both self-opinion and the--if you'll pardon the expression--slavish devotion and ingratiating opinion of others. His problem is that he has people who actually listen to his whining *****.
- in2deep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks Sheff you flippin idiot...get and IQ and learn how to speak English please...dont aint. and numerous others make you sound more ignorant than you already are!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I bet you Sheff called Bonds a racist
- reddfox321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The fact that he "passes" for white or Latin is the reason I think bringing his name up in this article is stupid. Its hard to be racist to somebody when the person's race is in question.
- supaklaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree, Sheffield is an incredible athlete. Unfortunately some people seem to lose all perspective, and have ZERO gratitude for their gifts, and their salaries. Jerry McGuire was kinda all about that... there's a point where you have to shut up about the "show me the money" and realize you might be dead or paralyzed tomorrow. I think Latin players, especially foreign Latin players, realize they won a lottery, thank god, and they are going to say "yes sir" and "no sir" and get that fat paycheck. I think American athletic culture is rewarding kids so fast, they seem to think they are the consumers, the stars, the show, and everyone has to kiss their ass. Baseball isn't basketball... you're a lot more expendable in baseball, there's a lot more fielding talent out there. Pitching, that's another story. A black pitcher, of Sheffield's level of talent, would be tolerated for any and all commentary and attitude. But the fact of the matter is, the Yankees are suffering for losing Sheffield, Abreu sucks steroid shrunken balls.
- renegadeafk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wow... just wow
- phantomsnow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Man this is a simple case of Sheffield sucking when he was a Yankee and not being happy about his time here. It was very brief. As a Yankees fan, I for one was very happy to see him go. Black or white, he still is too old and ***** sucks.
- stryfe137, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm a yankee fan and i'm also black/white. I've never seen Torre act differently towards black people. he was there a lot for Strawberry and Gooden during their hard times. During the championship years he never had a problem with putting in Strawberry in a clutch situation nor did he have a problem with Bob Watson during those years. Keep in mind too that Bob Watson was his superior. The problem with Sheffield has been the same thing wherever he goes. He looks for a reason for why a team wants to get rid of him even though he performs well. It is his mouth. He talks too much. Anybody who talks too much, chances are more than likely that dumb things will come out without having much thought behind it. The reason why people like womack never played is that he never gave instant gratification. It is hard to give at bats to players who are struggling when you're expected to win every game for a storied franchise and with an owner who changes coaches like most people change clothing.
As for the Derek Jeter comments, most people(including some on this board) don't seem to get that most of us with mixed ethnicity don't really think about that kind of stuff and look down on people who do.It is not a point of whether we are black or not. Any slight change in my DNA makes me not exist. None of you get to decide for us who we are and most of us wouldn't feel comfortable making that decision for ourselves anyway. That is the pitiful thing about this country. Race still matters. That is the reason why Barack Obama is having a hard time becoming President even though he should be (regardless of ethnicity). Most people can't get around the conventional way about thinking of things. Here's to hoping that you all:
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Farnn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What about Bernie Williams? or Cano?
- BassMastr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone who plays in MLB. Exploited at a mil plus a year!!! Please exploit me too!
- MaximusAugustus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1People seem to remember that before Sheff stuck his foot in his mouth this year, he was known as something akin to a sociopath. Add roids and whatever else he took from BALCO and you have an explosive combination.
There's a reason he's been on as many teams has he has been (Milwaukee, San Diego, Atlanta, LA Dodgers, Florida Marlins, NYY and now Detroit). He blows clubhouses up when he gets to them.
The problem is that when people like Sheff scream racism, it de-sensitizes people to REAL racism thereby hurting the very people that Sheff thinks he's helping. - seanc6610, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I call *****.
- hiphoc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I do like the fact that he speaks his mind as he sees it. it is so rare for someone to speak their mind now A days that when someone does it seems odd. Agree or not. You were not in that clubhouse with him. He also said Torre is not a racist. But its interesting how when a person of color feels like they have been discriminated against all the naysayers ramp up to show disbelief. Maybe some of you have seen the Oprah show, FOX TV series or 20/20 undercover specials. They make people up to be different races and go out with hidden cameras to see what happens. This ***** is real, just because its never happened to you doesn't mean its never happened. Stop having if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound syndrome.
- reddfox321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree, the only people that could disagree with him on this is Torre and he didn't go on the record. People usually learn and harbor biases and it should be no surprise that they surface given this country's history.
Its all in how you deal with it. Some jump over critical reflection and into denial when confronted with these truths. Others are adult enough to change. *shrugs* - reddfox321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe the city but Shef didn't talk about the city, he talked about Joe Torre.
- socomoddjob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kenny is a has been.......
- RobR7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I feel bad for Detroit, he's a problem wherever he goes. He's just got a serious case of diarrhea of the mouth, just no real thought into what he says before he says it. It can't be "telling it how it is" if you really have no idea what you're saying... he treats blacks differently but he's not a racist, Ok... which one is it? Gets asked about Jeter and why he isn't treated badly, his best excuse, oh he's not really black. Hmm... Ok, we'll how about Willie Randolph then? The two managers are still good friends. I couldn't wait for him to get booted from NY. He's like other poor SOBs that never realize it's their attitude that hold's them back, not their race, religion, weight, acne problems, etc... No one likes you because of you.
- zape654, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Lofton: Sheff is right on Joe
ST. PETERSBURG - Gary Sheffield isn't the only player who feels Joe Torre treated black players differently than white players, as Sheffield's former teammate, Kenny Lofton, chimed in with his thoughts yesterday before his Rangers played in Anaheim.
Lofton, who played for Torre in 2004, concurred with Sheffield's assessment of the Yankee manager and his attitude toward African-American players.
"All I can say is, Sheffield knows what he's talking about," Lofton told The Associated Press when asked to respond to Sheffield's comments about Torre. "That's all I'm going to say."
Lofton's one-year tenure in pinstripes was a tumultuous one, as he was signed to a two-year deal by George Steinbrenner to hit leadoff and replace Bernie Williams in center field, only to have Torre declare the job an open competition in spring training.
During the team's season-opening trip to Japan that March, Lofton griped about being batting ninth in the opener despite the fact that he hit .174 with no steals during spring training. "He's the manager. He makes the lineup and that's it. I can't make that decision," Lofton said at the time. "I can't take that pen out of his hand. The pen is mightier than the sword."
Lofton hit .275 with three homers, 18 RBI and seven stolen bases in 83 games for the Yankees that season, batting leadoff in 41 of those contests. He was traded to the Phillies that December for reliever Felix Rodriguez. - iVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0He's black and white.
- MaximusAugustus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well that and Shaq isn't a roidhead nutcase like Sheff is or was.
That and Shaq is generally coming from a happier place whereas whenever Sheff speaks it's always on edge or contains an edge to it. - gordonm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2As a Detroiter, all I can say is that Sheffield is not a good house negro.
- leetnyc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Let's get back to baseball... i wasted 2 minutes of my life reading this article and his dumb ass nonsense. sheff and loften are just whiney b--ches because they stunk it up during the playoffs (well loften the entire season he was there) and the yankees cut their losses. i don't remember aaron boone screaming "dumbism" after the yanks let him go after he ripped his knee playing basketball and he was the hero in 2004. maybe randy johnson will come out next week screaming torre treated ugly people differently which affected his crappy pitching in ny.
- Modulo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1i didn't say he was, I said he shouldn't
- stropsblog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0stropsblog.homestead.com
There were two dumb occurrences involving Gary Sheffield this week. The first was when he tried to make Joe Torre look like a plantation owner. Look, Joe T. may not be Malcolm X but he’s probably not David Duke, either. Players talk. If he mistreated – or as Shef claims, treated differently – black players, that rep would have spread. And last I looked, Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Bernie Williams, Alfonso Soriano, Charlie Hayes, and on and on and on had no trouble wearing pinstripes. The second mishap involving the aging-but-still-talented Sheffield was when MLB fined him for criticizing umpires. Sheffield might make you cringe with his take on race relations or his horrible misuse of grammar – everywhere he goes there’s controversy and every interview he gives there’s a butchering of the English language – but he’s still an American. He still has the right to express his opinions. He should have the freedom to talk about umps and have the only repercussions come from the fraternity of umpires who are known to squeeze players who have spoken out. MLB doesn’t think so. They coddle and protect umpires so badly you wonder if the First Amendment was buried in the collective bargaining agreement. Let Sheffield spout idiotic or misguided tirades – about anything. He has that right. -
