- jackpot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+71The difference between 1999 and 2000 is startling to say the least. How does someone's head get so big WITHOUT steroids?
- ThinkBox, on 10/10/2007, -10/+69Give credit where credit is due!

- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -7/+32Yup. Gained 43 pounds with no substance use, whatsoever.

save some time and check out this before and after photo - rokinroj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20how the hell do you work out your skull?
- diggleague, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Holy Crap .. that change (99-00) is frightening. If he didn't take steroids during that time period, you would have to think there was something seriously wrong with the way your body was functioning, that would scare the ***** out of me. You don't just grow mounds of muscle like that without taking beef roids.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Look at Cal Ripken Jr. He looked the same throughout an amazing career. Barry, not so much.
- tblasko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Then need to switch their slideshow to ajax, that was annoying
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15that would have been 10x easier to read, if they had at least more than 1 picture per page... so ***** annoying and hard to compare.
- WindWithMe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Thats not completely fair. One picture is when he is 21 and the other is when he is 41. I'm sure most people aren't the same weight/size in twenty years.
- izzybr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Two things really stick out when looking at the numbers:
1996-1997 - Gained 16lbs.
2000 - 2001 Gained 18lbs.
You cannot put on that kind of weight (while staying lean) without steroids. It's even hard to put on that much lean mass when taking a lot of steroids, particularly when you're starting with someone who is already well built, i.e. at or very close to one's genetic potential. - Skanadian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Note the lack of bulge in the later years.
- billtvshow, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Hey I can gain 43 pounds without substance use, just give me a cement truck full of mayonnaise and a hose.
- superpatty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11But then they would lose their ad revenue and page hit counts
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This is the perfect way to display statistical data. Instead of charts or graphs, lets display everything on individual pages!
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9What people are failing to realize here that the biggest effect from the roids Barry took isn't so much the muscle mass as it is his ability to recover. The guy was a Hall of Famer before the beef roids. If he never took them, chances are he would have been retired already or a player like Kenny Lofton who is a journeyman from team to team. At his age, it's not natural for him to be doing what he's doing and be that muscular. It's simple science that the older you get, the more aches, pains and injuries a non HGH-taking body sustains.
- scfraser6, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It's not that hard especially since he has the money for top notch personal trainers and the best supplements. I've added 20 pounds of muscle in six months only taking protein and working out in my makeshift gym at my house. But do I think Bonds did the juice? of course I do......You still have to give the guy credit though especially since there have been estimates that 70% or more players may having been using steroids or other performance enhancers during those years.
- MikeMigs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9he DID NT need to be the home run king... he went 40/40 one season... 40 home runs with 40 steals... that's incredible
- BlowsToYourMind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8this would be way more effective as a chart, instead of 18 pages, but i guess 1 chart doesn't give as much room to place adverts around
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10He was actually the inspiration for that Fathead company's name.
- jackpot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since joining the Giants, Bonds had gone from a size 42 to a size 52 jersey; from size 10 ½ to size 13 cleats; and from a size 7 1/8 to size 7 ¼ cap, even though he had taken to shaving his head. This does not occur from just gaining 40 lbs.
- chenbot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I'm confused by the Runs per at bat statistic... Do they mean AB/HR?
Somehow I don't buy him scoring 14 runs per at bat. - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And you believe that Carrot Top got that way without steroids?!
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How are the fans to blame? Do you honestly think if Barroid, Sosa and McGwire had said "Hey fans, look at how many home runs we are hitting because we are cheating and using steroids" that the fans would've gotten behind it? *****. The fans were just caught up in the excitement of it and never even gave a second thought that this was legit until the whole BALCO scandal.
- kathaclysm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yes, but most people don't peak at 41. Even someone with a really well-tuned body will probably peak in their late 20's, not early 40's.
- MrsButtersworth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Without a doubt, that jump is visibly the biggest difference. And notice how the listed weight from 86-2000 fluctuates gently from year to year. Then 2001 it jumps 18 pounds, and stays 228 through current. Peculiar.
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5RBIs? I would assume that it means any run and not just the times he himself crossed the plate.
- Miccardin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7A healthy diet of elephant fetuses and ostrich eggs is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this. Steroids are clearly an accusation by people overreacting.
- madcat033, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5First of all, in terms of working out and gaining mass, you peak at around 29 years old. So, what I don't get is, how the ***** could he be skinny at 29 and suddenly get jacked at 35?
And actually, it IS hard to gain muscle mass. Especially when you are 35. How many normal 35 year olds do you know that could honestly go from normal size to bodybuilder size without taking anything? - GoneSouth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5He gained 38 pounds of mostly muscle in 5 years ... from 190 in 1996 to 228 in 2001. This after being stable at 185 - 190 for the previous 10 years. I'm not saying it's impossible to put on that kind of weight naturally. Just really unlikely.
- coit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7His "runs per at bat" numbers are amazing!
- scheibs14, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4WTF is up with the Runs Per At Bat Stat?
1986: 413 AB, 72 runs = .174 Runs Par At Bat != 25.8 RPAB - gmlongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You might want to actually look at the timeline before you post. He didn't gain small increments from year to year. He made a huge jump around 99.
- scheibs14, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4...they make no sense
1986: 413 AB, 72 runs = .174 Runs Per At Bat != 25.8 RPAB
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=1785
What they mean is HR/AB. 413 AB/16 HR = 25.8 AB/HR - volitor8555, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Check the size oh his head growth between 99 and 01. To me that proves something.
- reuscel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What exactly is the exercise one does to increase the size of one's cranium?
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So you can score 25 runs per at bat now?
- baseballpm, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13I do not disagree with anyone here, but I think it should be noted, that although he is the "poster child" for the steroid era, the blame should also be placed on the fans, the commissioner and mostly the media. Because while this all started, the media was profiting from the interest in baseball and when it all blew over, they were the first ones to turn around and point the finger...everyone is guilty here...if you think about it as a business he did what he had to do...prepared to be dugg down
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No...he was about the same weight and body build up until 1998/1999ish. Look at the jump from 1999 - 2000.
This makes perfect sense in the timeline in "Game of Shadows." His jealousy over guys like McGwire and Sosa in the home run race of 1998 is the point he reportedly started doping. The proof to me is in the pictures. - durru7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Who cares, A-rod will break his record.
- gmlongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No way you gained 50 lbs of lean muscle in under a year. You might have gained 50 lbs, but no way all of it is lean. I have been around training for a long time, and that just doesn't happen.
- walkingdogs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I hold no stock in listed weights. Sports organizations always fudge these numbers to their liking. He clearly put on substantial size from 86-99 but his weight stayed the same. And much to the dismay of the people posting here it is very feasible to put on 40 lbs of muscle weight over 20 years of working out. Just look at '91 and '96. They have him listed at the same weight but he is clearly bigger in '96 than '91.
- keithmcbride, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3look at Griffey as well. Aaron himself thought Griffey was the only player who could break his record.
- sQPha7e, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Hard as *****"
Actually. ***** is pretty soft. - alpine75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And a guy who is averaging 30 Hr's a year jumps to 73 and his body gets much bigger at the same time? It all happens to be coincidence? Players typically hit fewer HR's as they age, not more!
- bubbadoo989, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Nah, that's not from juicin', it's from the broads, 60 oz. steaks and hard liquor.
- markp93, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Anyone ever see how big Henry Rollins got after he started working out? Why is Barry's weight difference *proof* that he used steroids?
- sgtbutterscotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What I want to know is how come his head size and body weight haven't come down to the level before he took steroids.
- dansmeek, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5DOODS, while it's cool to jump to conclusions about bonds and his steroid abuse... STEROIDS WAS NOT HIS DRUG OF CHOICE. IT IS HGH (human growth hormones). HGH makes your skull grow (and internal organs) along with increased vision and hand eye coordination plus the muscle growth. yes he took steroids. tons of people take steroids and don't get a crazy ass head. the weird body you see from bonds is from HGH not steroids. I thought I would clear that up.
