- badwithcomputer, on 11/01/2009, -0/+19i'm always amazed at the statistics mentioned casually during baseball games.
- RealmDown, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15This happened to me once. I was watching a Braves games on TV when they had "technical difficulties." There were no "in picture" information bands and no sound. All I saw was the game. It was really wonderful.
- KibblesnBitts, on 11/02/2009, -2/+14I wish there was an option where you could turn off McCarver and Buck's commentary and just listen to the sounds of the game.
- RatatRatR, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9I've always wanted that too. Also, an option to turn off all the graphics and just see the game.
- AmyVernon, on 11/02/2009, -1/+9doesn't it always seem as if they're pulling it out of their butts, like they just "happen" to know all this info?
- BrandonJM, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Likewise, then of course, McCarver runs them into the ground by finding ways to make them boring.
- wendelgee2, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5I learn a lot about the intricacies of the game, especially coaching decisions from listening to the announcers...I feel like without it you miss the "chess game" going on. That's just me though.
- diggduggDOOM, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Wizards?! These guys can't even cast a level 0 cantrip.
- pgriffinmonmout, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4I just wish McCarver and Buck would stop trying to predict every pitch.
From last night: "Posada signals for the breaking ball on the outside corner."
What happens: 95mph fastball up and inside. - dtpollitt, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3nice little sabermetrics introduction. a couple sites for those interested in some baseball metrics: baseball-reference, fangraphs, statcorner. even though im not a math major, ive used a lot of baseball stuff to help understand classes like regression and multivariate.
- Zubeneschemali, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2They need to listen to Vin Scully of the Dodgers. Joe Buck isn't half the announcer his father was. They need to announce like they are on radio with better play by play.
- serif69, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2The problem is that you're learning *wrong* about the intricacies of the game. Joe Buck knows about as much about baseball as the average chair, and McCarver is wrong about 90% of the time. But dammit, he is adamant when he's wrong.
- XISUPERMANIX, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I experienced this once with a Chicago Bulls game. It was retro night and they had some technical difficulties. Watching it was so much fun, you can hear the slaps when a player makes a drive to the basket, you can hear the yelling and play calling and so many other things that announcers drown out with their play by play. I imagine football would be the ***** without all the crap.
- Zapple100, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1 A lot of times I'll be listening to some music while watching a baseball game. I'm tired of hearing McCarver talking about the same play for 3 innings.
- deaftly, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1After hearing Joe Buck talk about Pearl Jam and football way to much last night its better to just put the tv on mute and listen to the game on the radio.
- mullzoo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1good article, ive always been curious about how the stats are generated.
- Tegurit34, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1That's great, but the problem is that they praise the decisions made when they're either good or don't do much, and when a manager does something self destructive, it's not mentioned. If it's something catastrophically stupid, it will be sugarcoated.
Good broadcasters who are willing to say it like it is -- which is what it sounds like you're after -- are a very rare breed. - misslindadee, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2Thanks, Louie! I often wondered about that! I find the trivia amazing, albeit, often it sounds superfluous at times.... One local person’s (who had a stroke) resonance is unbearably inarticulate and difficult to concentrate on. I am appreciative of the insights, though…especially in sports as I am not proficient in its repartee but respect my Sporty male friends who are passionate about it!.
- trafficlight, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2Quoting statistics is their attempt to make the game interesting. It's not working.
- RealmDown, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I hear you, but as long as I don't have the option of turning it off, I feel captive. The mute button will get a lot, but the on screen spam is getting too much.
- Elset, on 11/02/2009, -6/+5When it has rained for at least three hours, but been clear for the 2 hours directly prior to gametime (7:57 pm) on a Sunday when the temperature is 46 degrees or cooler in October with the bases loaded in a 2-2 count Johnny Damon is 0-0.
- debaser7673, on 11/02/2009, -4/+0baseball is ***** boaring
- Barbarino, on 11/02/2009, -7/+3Here is a great stat, Yanks in 5!!!!
- Barackalypse, on 11/02/2009, -8/+3I'm not sure amazing is the proper adjective to describe them.
- FormerBabby, on 11/02/2009, -10/+4OMG DATABASES!!!! OOOOHHH THE MARVEL!!!!!!
