an article about how the Red Sox signing a Japanese amateur player is a very bad thing.
Source: yankees.lhblogs.com
... - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+12This will stir the pot but The Red Sox have deep pockets and could care less about anyone else.
- DiggityCarl, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6funny.....the Red Sox being lectured by the yankees on baseball ethics.....***** laughable, actually.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6I just wish it was April already :(
- davewashere, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5"Brian Cashman said from the start that he would abide by the agreement (not to pursue Japanese amateurs)"
That's an easy statement to make when you've just made a record contract offer to the best pitcher in baseball and are still hinting at acquiring another All Star-caliber arm before the start of next season. If Boston signs this guy and it opens up the markets for amateur players from both sides of the Pacific, so be it. Will it hurt the (American) owner's wallets? Sure. Could it lead to contraction? Absolutely. Contraction should happen; MLB has expanded too much into markets that can't support a team. The Marlins were reporting dismal attendance figures hovering around 10,000 this season. That was before someone tried counting the actual number of people at the game. Turns out they were inflating their number by a factor of 20!
Cashman can complain all he wants about the Red Sox ruining baseball, yet the Yankees continue to drive up salary demands by giving every superstar who comes along a $20 mil/year offer. Not every team can play in NYC and get the support from the local government that the Yankees get. - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6Let the BoSox waste their money.
- briLo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Baseball already has major issues with international players as it is and they either need to be part of the draft or scrap the draft all together.
Why should an American kid go through the draft process while international players can sign at any given time without going through the same process?
Either all or nothing both ways!
As for our gentlemens agreement to not draft Japanese amateurs until they've played an entire contract in Japan.........is that fair to the young player from Japan?? Aren't you hindering the ability of that person on an open market?
As for American players going to other countries....it happens all the time. I have a few buddies who played professionally in Europe. Sure the baseball isn't nearly as competitive but you're still paid to play, and paid rather well at that! - kawaiirobo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4The day I take an article about the Sox on a pro-Yankees blog seriously is the day hell freezes over and New Yorkers give free sleigh rides.
- davewashere, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3After thinking this through for a few more minutes, this Yankee fan's argument doesn't make much sense. He seems to think this (potential) deal could have a backlash where "well-financed" Japanese teams make big offers to American prospects. Let me tell you why this is BS: Currently, the only American players who go to Japan are the rejects. These are the players that either aren't getting anywhere in the minor leagues and want a new experience or the has-been major leaguers who aren't starting anymore and can make decent money in Japan. There's nothing stopping the Japanese from making deals for top MLB players, but they haven't. If they aren't going to make deals for the top players in MLB, why would they make deals for our top prospects? With signing bonuses over $3 million for some 1st round draft picks, it's not like these unproven players are cheap. Are the Japanese teams that won't pay $12 million for an all star player supposed to pay $4-$5 million for some kid with a lot of promise?
- davewashere, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3So dump the franchise. They foolishly squandered the chance to establish a fanbase, despite winning 2 WS championships in their 17 years of existence, and now they are getting lower attendance figures than dozens of minor league teams.
- evan193, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3the guy has been writing for the mets and yankees for the last 8 years and this article is clearly slanted as anti-red sox. explain yourself.
- AmyVernon, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but it really could have serious ramifications on the future of baseball, as dorky as that sounds.
- form3hide, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2You can't use the Marlins as an example. Every time they start winning and acquiring fans, they have a major sell off.
- tensaibaka, on 11/26/2008, -0/+2Um, the writer forgot to mention the fact that Tazawa himself personally stated he didn't want to be drafted by any of the Japan teams, specifically so he COULD pursue his dream of playing for an MLB team. If a player is drafted and plays for a Japan team, they have to wait 9 years to become a free agent, or wait for their club to post them for bidding like the Seibu Lions did with Matsuzaka.
- jorlandella, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2I wish this beat writer remembered how many players the Yankees payed for who did not go through the draft. Why didn't they abide by letting guys go to the draft when it came to Mariano Rivera? It is just another example of somebody writing an opinion piece in the veil of a factual piece, coupled without actually doing some research. It is fun to read and listen to bitter Yankees fans/writers.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -3/+4I know Japan has a few good players but has it really been that hard to keep away from their players?
- DiggityCarl, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1I had no idea. Must be odd....but better in the last few years than before.

- TsuruchiBrian, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1Isn't it obvious??? Join the leagues together!!
We could have a "World Series" that is a little closer to not being a lie. - form3hide, on 11/25/2008, -1/+2Actually, Peter is a RS fan. But he's a NYY beat writer.
- form3hide, on 11/25/2008, -2/+2Sigh. The writer is a RS fan, but a NYY beat writer. He's not pro-Yankees.
- form3hide, on 11/25/2008, -1/+1Right, and that's fine, but if you look at the blog, Peter is the only writer. He's a beat writer. He's a not biased towards the Yankees, at all.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+0Forecasting the major-league potential of any amateur player is tough, and I'd imagine it's even more difficult when he's coming from Japan. Even Japan's most proven pros have had mixed results in the majors (for every Ichiro or Daisuke there's an Irabu or Kaz), but I suppose the Red Sox have too much money to be risk averse.

- DarkBlueAnt, on 11/25/2008, -5/+1Baseball is so crappy. What happened to teams actually representing their cities?
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -7/+2We don't want to piss the japanese off. If they wanted to they could crash the US economy just by pulling their money out at any time. The Red Sox will ruin the world. haha
