'The Freak' -- How Tiny Tim Became a Pitching Giant
sportsillustrated.cnn.com — The mechanics of diminutive Tim Lincecum -- looks 18, throws 98 -- are more than an act of violence, they're a marvel of modern science. Unconventionally honed by his father, that delivery has produced the most fascinating ace of his generation...

- damian7, on 07/07/2008, -13/+2Wall of text crits for 28151
- breakspirit, on 07/07/2008, -16/+6This article makes no sense if you read it thinking it's about the singer Tiny Tim. However, it's far more entertaining than the real article.
- GenghisRon, on 07/07/2008, -1/+21Really good/interesting article on one of the best pitchers in baseball at the moment
- MrButthead, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5I'm a subscriber to SI, and I thought this was the most interesting article in quite some time.
- yossarian24, on 07/07/2008, -1/+35He played on my brothers team in the Cape Cod Baseball League and I thought he was the bat boy. Then he came in and threw 98.
- TheKeithD, on 07/07/2008, -6/+4I read the headline and started thinking about tiptoeing through the tulips. I read the rest and was sorely disappointed.
- Devotia, on 07/07/2008, -2/+4Well I'm having a wonderful time!
- mfdoomm, on 07/07/2008, -23/+3I think most diggers would agree that baseball sucks major balls.
- alarmist, on 07/07/2008, -3/+13baseball is amazing
- randyzaia, on 07/07/2008, -4/+6Lincecum is great but Sports Illustrated is such a disaster these days.
- nemojonze, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2...and every other print media.
- randyzaia, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Mainly just SI. Every other article in there is about the family life of some random athlete or some mawkish tale of triumph over adversity.
- mfdoomm, on 07/07/2008, -20/+2I think most diggers would agree that baseball sucks major balls anyway.
- almostspastic, on 07/07/2008, -2/+5This article makes me giggle because this is almost the EXACT style my Dad pitches, and how he taught me to pitch. Once I got to High School the coaches insisted on changing everything. Needless to say I didn't pitch past my Junior year. At 5'9" I'm not a very effective pitcher without using everything I've got.
- EvilJelloMan, on 07/07/2008, -9/+14The physics and biomechanics of baseball are truly fascinating. It's a shame the sport itself is so mind-numbingly boring.
- slickrick2k1, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1only to an unlucky, uninitiated few :)
- vinceislegend, on 07/07/2008, -3/+1There is only Zod.
- bcasper1, on 07/07/2008, -2/+17here is a great video dissecting his form from ESPN
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-305172634 ... - vegetables, on 07/07/2008, -2/+6Just want to say, all this talk of a 5'10", 172 guy being called "small", "tiny", and a "runt" is making me self-conscious. I know he's being compared to MLB pitchers, but still. Sheesh.
- lajaw, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2Tiny Tim used to sing "tiptoe through the tulips". He's also dead.
- threepio, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6I'm not terribly interested in baseball but this was a great read.
- Akileese, on 07/07/2008, -2/+5I thought it really should of been split into two articles (one about Lincecum and his story and then another based purely on Peterson/Duquette and ASMI's biomechanics), but it was definitely intertwined well. It's amazing that throwing a baseball like that is literally the most violent motion an arm can possibly go through. A fascinating read if you're into physics, baseball, or both.
- z0mb13, on 07/07/2008, -4/+2Why is every SI article so long winded?
- efitz11, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4this was the cover article
- aserer511, on 07/07/2008, -10/+1SF giant? I think good ol' Barry may have put some HGH in his coke...
- MsPunky, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Somehow I doubt that, especially after reading about how his father coached him. If he is discovered to be using performance enhancing drugs, it'd be a real disappointment.
- aserer511, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1i was kidding around
- dafragsta, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5A video of his mechanics.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aYXDjEpjf4 - healthyapples, on 07/07/2008, -7/+1poor guy, his manager refers to him as "the freak". If this pitcher was black al sharpton would be all up in dis bitch
- bullox, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Ever heard of Javon "The Freak" Kearse? He's not white, and Al Sharpton, despite notions to the contrary, is not all up in dis bitch.
- TehChrisMeister, on 07/07/2008, -4/+2For a moment I thought this article was referring to the famous Tiny Tim, such as in "living in the sunlight loving in the moonlight"...not much of a sports guy...
- rydawg61, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6Speaking from the perspective of a long time Giants fan...this guy is the real deal. I have have seen him pitch every game this year and he just has confidence that he's going to win every time.
- Lawrencesss, on 07/07/2008, -7/+2Disappointing, I thought this would be about gay sex.
- vermax, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2somebody needs to be hiring his dad as a pitching coach
and as little as i could care less about baseball, what a great story of a warehouse worker using his brain and making something happen - shoediva, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1Great article.....made me interested in baseball
- Rethcir, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1I have to point out that Pedro is only around 5'8. Lincey is good but he's got some resume building to do before I call him the greatest "small" pitcher of all time.
- cabbag3patchkid, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0I agree with some of these people that baseball is fun and that i am a pitcher myself and i wish i could be as effective when piching. I am very effective in the out field and third base but on the mound i am not very good. I am only 5' and i did a Micheal Jordan leap and made a catch at third base so it is good for him.
- El-Taco, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1Tim is the man, and he is my identical twin.
