- mlvassallo, on 07/13/2009, -1/+8Ichiro in the park Homerun not even on the list? What? Dude is fast.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Michael Young has been extremely clutch. His game winning triple to drive in 2 in 2006, and his rbi winning sacrifice fly in 2008 were huge!
In fact, even though the Texas Rangers haven't come close to the world series, their All-Star game performances have had a pretty big impact for the American League. - vector66, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5Where are Pete Rose and Roberto Clemente? This list is insanity, blasphemy! And I'm not a baseball guru, just remember some players from my childhood.
- gabaus, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I totally agree with you on this. The game used to mean something. I remember as a kid watching the HR derby and All Star game, the derby was short and sweet and the players actually wanted to play and win. The 72 ASG was great with Reggie hitting the light tower at Tiger Stadium. Players played more then 1 or 2 innings. You were not guaranteed any playing time if you were not a starter. Geez freakin Rose bowled over Fosse. You will not see that anymore!
- Chewie67, on 07/13/2009, -3/+6Ripken's home run in the last game is the most over-rated sports event I've ever seen. Chan Ho Park clearly grooved a pitch for him right down Broadway. If Ripken missed it, I think Chan Ho Park would have set it on a Tee for him.
Horrendous. - P522, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Didn't Willie Mays actually steal home to win one All star game 1-0? Now that's competitiveness and taking pride!
- Ajajadude, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3I'd say they still try hard. You look at the first guy on the list, Pedro, and what he did in '99. Or a couple of years ago, one of the NL pitchers (can't remember his name) was going all out with Nolan Ryan-esque fastballs seeing as he was only pitching for a few innings (Vlad Guerrero ended up hitting one of those fastballs head-high into the stands).
Outside of spring training, it's probably the best time to see these guys socialize and really enjoy playing a game. How often did you see Jeter do Nomar's pre-pitch ritual in the regular season? - Blinker1315, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4I remember when the All Star game was a big event, when players tried hard to win and didn't view it as an exhibition game and time to socialize with other players. Willie Mays was just the best to watch.
- serif69, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Willie Mays was the best to watch any time, All-Star Game or not. Though he played well before my time, I used to love watching him on repeats of Home Run Derby and any old games that show up on TV every now and then.
- BetterThanYou, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3In reference to Derek Jeter this article says he's "...the only member of this team to make the 2009 team"
um...huh? What about Mark Teixiera and Mariano Rivera? - macromorgan, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2The article mentioned Soriano's bomb as a Ranger, and you can't forget about Hank Blalock's first ever All Star at bat (another bomb). And the Hamilton Derby (they should formally rename the Home Run Derby after him for that) last year was awesome as well!
- anarcurt, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Jeter does not have the range of at least half the other players but the guy plays smart, has one of the top BA in the league, steals bases while rarely getting caught, and is a quality leader with no drama. He is consistently good and even better in the clutch. To suggest he is one of the worst is just retarded. Also, the list is meant to compile the best overall averages of players who have been in multiple games. Being that Jeter has the all time high BA in All Star games with the prerequisite at bats it is more than appropriate that he is on the list.

.316 Career Avg. Decent power for a SS with over 200 HRs, should pass 300 steals this year, 3 Gold Gloves, will easily pass 3000 career hits. Give the guy a little credit here. - NeoCortex, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1How about Uggla's fielding last year? Oh, wait. 'Best' performers.
- LSUPrince00, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1ALL-STAR Performers, not regular season or careers... if they would only read and not see what they want to see...
- Monotonousblob, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1@macromorgan - So how does such a horrible shortstop have 3 gold gloves, only 4 errors this season, and one of the best fielding % at his position, while still being the oldest shortstop in the All-Star Game in 20+ year? I'm a Yankees fan, but that doesn't mean I automatically think Beckett, Youkilis, and Pedroia are a terrible baseball payers.
- PunkFenixJT, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2This team = The "All All-Star" team the article is putting together.
Aka no one else on the list is in this year's game - jfujita, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1No Ichiro? FAIL.
- macromorgan, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2I've asked this of every Yankee fan and so far no one has been able to answer me. Define clutch in any meaningful stastical term. Does he have a higher batting average in the 9th when trailing by one run? Is his on base percentage higher when runners are on the corners? What does clutch mean?
Offensively his OPS puts him as a good shortstop, but due to his horrible defensive skills he's only rated as slightly above replacement level overall. - PNess, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1this web site gives me 4 virus warnings and kerpkasky wont even load it...lol
- seandfeeney, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1.
- macromorgan, on 07/13/2009, -3/+2Article Fail. Derek Jeter is one of the worst shortstops in the AL. He's the defensive equivalent of a brick wall.
The Yankees do have one of the best short stops in all of baseball history though... pity he currently plays 3rd base for them. - murraj2, on 07/13/2009, -3/+1Bull ***** that this list doesn't include Ted Williams.
.311 Average (14-45), .436 OBP, 4 HRs (including 2 in a game in which he went 4-4), 10 Runs, 12 RBIs
Edit: Also his 30 TB in 45 at-bats gives is much better than Mays and Musial's 40 in 73 and 63 ABs, respectively. - scarlettletter, on 07/13/2009, -5/+1Cal Ripken Jr. has really pretty eyes! But I guess that really doesn't matter!
