- geoff1210, on 02/19/2009, -0/+60Here's hoping Griffey can get a spot in the lineup, stay healthy, and knock a whole bunch outta the park and move up the HR list over the next season or two.
He is probably the only childhood favorite of mine who didn't juice. - bbrassi, on 02/19/2009, -0/+40"Hi, this is Ken Griffey Jr., let's play Major League Baseball."
- calebcherry, on 02/19/2009, -1/+35The legend comes back to Seattle. There could not be better timing for the Mariners.
Heck, if we lose as many as we did last year It'll happen with twice as many butts in the seats.
And to top it all off... HE'S 100% NATURAL SELF GROWN ATHLETE - DaviDTC, on 02/19/2009, -0/+25Too bad his career was plagued by injuries or he would be the home run king when he retires.
- dekuscrub, on 02/19/2009, -0/+21I am excited to see him return.
He was pretty much my childhood idol/hero, and I will always appreciate what he did for this ball club.
Don't get me wrong; the M's are still gonna blow chunks this year.
But at least we'll have something to cheer for! - Dingoboy, on 02/19/2009, -0/+21Hooray!!!! The Kid returns home!!!
- tyscott, on 02/19/2009, -0/+20This is the best news in sports for Seattle in what has seemed like forever! Welcome back, Jr.!
- 4tygames, on 02/19/2009, -0/+19Please Nintendo (Owners of the Mariners), make a new Griffey game now!
- woofers07, on 02/19/2009, -0/+18The sweetest swing in baseball.
- xchrisxsays, on 02/19/2009, -0/+18You're my boy blue!
- JoeF8577, on 02/19/2009, -3/+20From a Reds Fan:
Good Luck Jr., and remember, when the time comes, there is already a one-day contract with your name on it so you can retire with the team you were born to play for
Seriously, this guy will go down as one of the most loved athletes ever. It's hard to find someone who didn't take joy in watching this kid grow up. - kinghami3, on 02/19/2009, -0/+16I remember watching him play in the AAA league in Bellingham, and was so bummed when he left Seattle. It's good to have him home again. He's not at the top of his game, but there is a reason he is one of the most loved players in the game: he is a solid, all-American player who represents the best of the sport.
- JayMeaux, on 02/19/2009, -1/+15This is ironic...the kid comes home around the same time A-roid gets ousted. Karma is a bitch Mr. 26 million a year
-still bitter - sogleedy, on 02/19/2009, -1/+15Griffey will do more for the M's and Seattle then he ever could as a Brave and may keep baseball from heading the direction A-Roid is taking it.
- Flyer00, on 02/19/2009, -1/+14From another Reds fan:
The organization, the town, and the fans treated him like ***** here. Right from the start, he was billed as an over paid has-been that is taking up too much of the Reds' small budget (even though he took much less to play here than he would have gotten on the free market).
I'll never forget being at a game during his second season and the fans were booing him during a batting slump. Who boos a hall of famer of his caliber except clueless Reds fans? No wonder he's going back to Seattle where the fans love him. I would too. Good luck Jr.! - MikeMitchell, on 02/19/2009, -0/+13I still have his Upper Deck rookie card from when I was a kid.
Always loved him, and still remember the rush from getting one of his cards in a pack. - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+12My hero as a kid, memories of the '95 season, Griffey a true, drug-free legend... The Kid is back!
- ohhaiitsryan, on 02/19/2009, -0/+11i feel like im ***** 12 years old again.
i call shenanigans if he doesnt wear 24 - goofygarber, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10I would have dugg this 10 times if I could. Welcome back Junior. I don't even care if he has a mediocre season, its what we need.
@neilk85, he didn't juice. Don't you dare crush my dreams. - sassypoch, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10Yay Griffey!!! We've missed you!! Can't wait to go to a game now :)
- chrismakk69, on 02/19/2009, -1/+10Thought he would end up in Atlanta. The mans career comes full circle.
- fatloui, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9I don't even like baseball anymore, but Griffey was my first sports hero and so Seattle was my first favorite team, so this makes me happy, will definitely be getting tickets for when the mariners come to baltimore.
- Dr3w, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9Reminds me of the days when my dad and I would sit in the military-discount section (right behind a very young Junior) and we'd actually be able to get him to turn around and wave to us by yelling his name. Also got to see a few behind-the-backs up close. Welcome home Junior!
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8***** the NBA. Even if they give Seattle another Sonics team, I refuse to support the NBA after the way Clay Bennett and David Stern bent over the city I love and gave us all the shaft.
I only take solace in the fact that the only two team owners that voted against the move were Paul Allen, also the beloved owner of the Seahawks, and Mark Cuban, who I've always hoped would be allowed to buy an MLB team. I can't believe the rest of the NBA consist of *****. - j0hn, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8Opening day here I come. This will be great for Seattle. They need something to increase ticket sales and get fans back to the stadium. They will still be terrible, but it would be great to go back and see Griffey in a M's uniform.
- Spoomeister, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8You can tell from the unusually high ratio of quality comments to negativity / asshattery in here, just how much Junior meant to Seattle and just what a quality person he is in baseball overall. I have my quibbles about him coming back from a stats point of view, but you can't deny how much fun folks will have seeing him again.
And hey! I read that former Giant Willie Mays and former Mariner Harold Reynolds made a last-minute push to convince Junior to come back, so Mays and Reynolds have just become Mariner fan favorites for life now. - JoeF8577, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8CRAAAACCKK
YAYYYY!!!!!!!! - rangermatt, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7As a Seattle sports fan... I have to say this is the first good news I've had since the Super Bowl XL fiasco. Does this mean we've finally bottomed out?
- WSUcougars, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7I loved the old Kingdome. Most thought that it was an eyesore but it was so easy to move up to the good seats, mostly because no one was there.
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7Let's see...
- The Mariners set high expectations for themselves and finished last in the league.
- The Seahawks set high expectations for themselves and sucked a lot too.
- The Sonics just up and left.
- Huskies football lost every single game.
Yup. Rock bottom. - MakanGuru, on 02/19/2009, -1/+8Now if only the freaking Supersonics will get their ass back to Seattle............
Welcome back Griff - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7Welcome back to Seattle Junior. I remember the playoff game where you were dogpiled at home plate. Good times. Opening day should be fun...but I still don't have faith the Mariners can get their ***** together.
- RenegadeX28, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7Man, those days when Griffey Jr was in Seattle were some of the best years of baseball. He finally returns to the Mariners. Hopefully ,he can make an impact....
...and if you didn't have the N64 games, you suck. CLASSIC baseball games indeed! - Shadic, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6***** yes! I think I'll go see a game, again.
- sogleedy, on 02/19/2009, -1/+750 more next season
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I love Junior to death but the only thing he can offer to a team nowadays is hitting against right-handed pitching. Team President Chuck Armstrong said on the radio soon after that he was signed primarily as a DH so that eliminates any problem he'd give the team by insisting on playing in the outfield, so hopefully he won't put up a fight when he's benched against a lefty on the mound or pinch-hit for when a left-handed reliever comes is brought out to face him.
Also, if the team somehow finds itself in contention and Junior doesn't meet expectations, he needs to do what Edgar did in his last hurrah and just let a better player take time away from him for the good of the team. - Spoomeister, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5No, you're not - sort of. From a stats point of view, and a team that is rebuilding, he's not necessary per se. He's not the hitter he once was, and sure as hell isn't the fielder - every time he does something other than DH, the northwest will hold its breath. The roster spot would be better spent giving more playing time to other new guys. And it'd be nice to see the Ms stop defining themselves solely by 1995.
On the other hand, though - this anemic offense can use the help, and given how much Seattle sports has blown the last couple years, and with the economy and all, people could use some cheering up. And who knows? Maybe he rediscovers his swing and gets a couple more years here. Maybe the club rebuilds well in the next couple years and he gets to be there to pass the torch to the next generation.
So I'm going to try not to rain on the parade, and enjoy some baseball, and be happy that my son will be able to say he saw Griffey play as a Mariner. - JackondaRocks, on 02/19/2009, -3/+8Just wish the Sonics came back to Seattle...
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5http://www.singaporesoxfan.com/images/gigantism.jp ...
Proof Junior used PEDs. They call it "nerve tonic" on the streets. - Lumbre619, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5I don't normally follow Baseball, but when I was 10 for a moment I tried to get into it and Mariners was the team I was rooting for. When they had Griffey, Alex Rodriguez (pre-steroid? I hope), Randy Johnson I know they had some other top guns but can't think of them at the moment. Good for Griffey and hope he has one hell of a season. I'll be watching once more.
- ohhaiitsryan, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5"that ball is going, going, gone!"
- snowbeard, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Best baseball game ever.
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4The Kingdome was ugly as sin and had to go, but my first and best baseball memories were in that stadium and a little part of me died inside when they imploded it.
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Wrong. Right field has a short porch and dead center is 400 feet, which is the norm. There's a reason when he returned 2 years ago as a Red that the Mariners front office gave him a framed picture of the field with the title "The House that Griffey Built." -- It was really built for him to hit in. (While also filling the front office's desires for having a pitcher's park.)
Safeco Field is a pitcher's park because it eats right-handed hitters alive (left-center is the deepest part of the park and left field is a cavern), the wind typically blows from left field to right, and the cold and thick sea air slows down hard hit fly balls.
What's going to hurt Junior is that he's A) another year older, B) switching leagues [yes I know he was with Chicago for 2 months but that's it], and C) DHing because hitters new to DHing typically hit poorer than when they field. - danielrh9, on 02/19/2009, -1/+4Words cannot describe the absolute and embarrassingly pathetic ineptitude of Braves GM Frank Wren. There's going to be a big bounty on his head in Atlanta soon.
- headband, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3I really think the best part of it will be the attitude and leadership he brings into the dugout. Alot of the younger guys on the team looked up to him as kids. It would be great if they could keep him around as a DH for a solid 4 or 5 years, although I think 2...maybe 3 is more realistic.
- Tegurit34, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3I'm looking forward to a proper send off into retirement.
- Flyer00, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3"Please don't beat yourself over this, Mitch. It's not your fault. Damn it, Blue was old. That's what old people do. They die."
- chevyorange, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Don't count on it. Griffey will retire a Mariner and in an M's uniform. He's never been booed here, even as a visitor.
- JayMeaux, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2A hard decision I'm sure not going to Turner's force fed "America's Team"
