- dbohio22, on 03/04/2009, -0/+20Just an update...this was the title and summary of the story ESPN originally posted. Around 11 PM Eastern on March 3rd, they changed their story to Manny and the Dodgers only reaching a common ground, but no deal has been set. Apparently their source had some information mixed up. Sorry for any confusion.
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+10Today I saved ten dollars by not eating out. Instead, I went into the kitchen and went through everyone's brown bag lunch. I assembled two courses and it was delicious. I am going to try to do it again tomorrow.

http://www.dailysportscard.com/content/1992-topps- ... - MisterFurious, on 03/04/2009, -0/+7I'll believe it when I hear him announced on opening day.
- kerouac906, on 03/04/2009, -0/+7And to think the Dodgers initially offered him a poverty-like $42 million.
- kerouac906, on 03/04/2009, -0/+6Some day the general populace needs to wake up and stop paying the outrageous ticket prices (though baseball is one of the few sports where cheap tix can be had), buying overpriced uniforms & team gear, and so on, so athletes salaries can be brought back down to earth. I know, free market, blah, blah, blah, I don't give a *****, this has been out of hand for a long time now and the only way to fix it is to lower demand.
- Shappie, on 03/04/2009, -1/+7Oh, how will he ever survive on $45 million..
- nugge7, on 03/04/2009, -1/+5doyers!
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4Its Mannywood time baby!
- DirtyVicar, on 03/04/2009, -1/+5Manny Mota's back? The guy is like 75 now.
- TrashyMoped, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4thats ~ $432,000 a week, every week, for 2 years (just to put it into perspective)
- Jericho6, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4Ah, poor sports. Never getting much love on Digg, and when a story hits the front page it isn't even true.
Ramiez will probably sign in the next 48 hours I suspect. - turbodiesel, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3you mean I can go to the OC and watch the overrated Vlad the Invisible?
Best favor Artie did for the Dodgers was outbid them for that stiff. - smacksaw, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3That's probably the day he'll sign. "No more Spring Training, right Scott? We play baseball in the big stadium today? Ok, I will sign."
- Tegurit34, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3To put it into further perspective, the Major League minimum salary is $440,000 per year.
- BTom14, on 03/04/2009, -3/+6Sorry but manny's a prick.
- brainboy7777, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3this is the same deal that has been on the table for the past two weeks. lame.
- DiggzDE, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3I don't like the decision they made.
- jayjayjoni, on 03/04/2009, -3/+5I hate it when people make this kind of money.
- smacksaw, on 03/04/2009, -2/+4Scott Boras somehow made the Dodgers bid against themselves and still manage to overpay.
Angelinos - you may laugh at the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" for any number of legitimate word-twisting reasons, but the Angels will accept you as a fan if you can't stomach this foolishness any longer. - Tegurit34, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3The Dodgers sure could use another +3 to 4 win player for 2009, but a contract like that sure wasn't the way to do it. Wins on the free agent market this year are at an average going rate of $4 to $4.5 million and the Dodgers will be paying more than that. Overpaying for star players is a necessity if you want them, but Manny is overvalued in this market because he really isn't that great when you take his eye-gouging defense into consideration. Scott Boras manipulated yet another GM to compete against themselves; funny how he has a knack for doing that.
I don't like it for the Dodgers, but it's certainly not because Manny's "a prick," or "he'll quit trying when he wants to," like some of the buried comments in this thread. It's because the Dodgers are very intent on squandering resources for overvalued production and this new Manny contract is just Exhibit #4,884,763,190 A. - SnapETom, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Ugh. This is quoting a freakin' source. Do you know how many sources have claimed the deal was done in the past 3-4 weeks? There have been so many misfirings, it's insane. ESPN themselves have reported that a "deal was done" at least twice, citing other media outlets. Buried for being nothing more than a rumor. I'll believe it when he's playing on Opening Day.
- YodaOfDarkness, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2lezz go doyers! *clop clop, clop-clop-clop!*
- redskyformiles, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3about goddamn time.
- Clinojim, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2While the Dodgers did make multiple offers to Ramirez, they were basically for the same amount of money each time.
1. 2 years 45 mil (25 first year, 20 second)
2. 1 year, 25 mil
3. 2 years 45 mil (25 mil first year, 20 mil second year with a player option to get out of the contract after the first year)
Three deals, but pretty much the same money every time.
Also, I would rather be a Dodger fan and stomach this than an Angel fan and stomach Gary Mathews Jr. - cubs0110, on 03/04/2009, -2/+4lol, or not
- whorelock, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure the entire Dodgers organization is committed to winning, unfortunately the front office still seems wishy washy. As a lifetime Dodgers fan, I'd love to see them in the series in Oct 09, but I won't hold my breath.
- real, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Didn't you say that last year. Year Of the Cubs.
- wcstryfe10, on 03/04/2009, -1/+2He is still playing for a contract. It's 25 million with an option (if he indeed sign), so next year he can be a free agent or get 20 million
- fdsarawr, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1No ***** on that statement.
- stevenk87, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1El Maniaco...
- wcstryfe10, on 03/04/2009, -1/+2Me either, but as a Dodger fan I'm hoping for a world series win, and Manny can help the Dodgers, too bad he is an ass
- DiggzDE, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1wcstryfe10: yeah. Everyone seems think Manny loves LA but he couldn't give a ***** about it. He had originally said he wanted to play for the Dodgers no matter what he got paid. Now we have this whole debacle.
Don't forget the fact he left Boston with bad blood because he didn't give a ***** over their either and only wanted money. He doesn't care about the teams or the fans. Manny would be just as happy playing in NY or San Francisco if the pay is right. If he feels the pay isn't right, he likely wont perform to his abilities.
It is disappointing that some seem to feel Manny actually likes playing for the Dodgers. It isn't the case. He just wants to be paid.
Expect more Mannyisms in this coming year. And expect him to hinder the Dodgers as much as he might help them at times. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1HOO-RA!
- haterrade, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1The extra million per win hurts unless you realize the additional marketing/recognition he brings. When was the last time the Dodgers were on the front page of ESPN.com and mattered in the national sports world? Signing Dunn/Abreu/Pettitte to a similar total price would have been worth way more in terms of wins/losses but teams try to turn a profit, first and foremost. I didn't want Manny back, but he makes the Dodgers relevant and they aren't a championship team regardless
- real, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1Rather be a royals fan.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1I knew he would go back to LA, just wanted to squeeze every dime he could out of them. Good work.
- kerouac906, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1Class jealousy? I wouldn't say I'm jealous cause I don't want his money personally, but yeah, when he and his agent bicker over millions and it is really less than 10 ***** percent of the total, not to mention he's already sitting on a pile of cash, I feel that people need to wake up, open their eyes and say enough is enough. A lot of the fans can't even afford a single day at the ballpark anymore... Family of 4 @ Dodger Stadium = avg cost of $229/game.
A-Rod defrauds the fans with 'roids and gets to keep every penny. Not saying Man-Ram is roided, but it wouldn't be a shocker. He better do some good with his cash and fame. Sadly, most don't. And at the same time the Billionaire owners try to wring all the money they can out of the tax-paying public for new stadiums so they can get richer. I love baseball as a sport, I hate it as a business. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1And way over rated too. He's got a 2x4 for a stick but the guy is a joke. Always causing problems. For 20 mil a year, I would shut the hell up and just play.
- real, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1You must be a redsox fan. Which is fine. But don't get all butt hurt. You got Penny and Drew wow talk about over paying(drew I mean) and Penny yeah well he might be done.
- chiefquanah, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1the made this offer months ago, took it back and now made it again... they should have offered less just to show him that he should not have turned him down before otherwise he should sit.
- Tegurit34, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1It's *at least* $1 million more per win, and the $4-4.5 million per win average is for free agents where talent is overpriced to begin with. Abreu is a +2 win player and cost $5 million.
And the Dodgers don't turn a profit if all the money goes to Manny. The fact of the matter is that the information as to how much more revenue the presence of Manny brings to the Dodgers is disclosed, and possibly unquantifiable. - Clinojim, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1With the exception of the player opt out clause, it's the same deal that they offered in November.
- jmones, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0True. No other teams showed serious interest.
- swashbux, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0So thats where all our money is going O_o
