- hawkdude56, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Good on the Rays, another small market team remaining competitive.
- randomguy2525, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2For the first time in years a MLB free agent signed for fair value.
- sportyguy2334, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1have you ever looked at his season totals? and there's never anything wrong with a right handed power hitter to protect those lefty power hitters when faced with lefthanded pitching. that's why he hit behind howard for the phillies. it's like Pat Gillick said when the phils resigned him it's tough to replace someone who gets 33 HRs and 86 RBIs a season. yeah he strikes out a lot but so do a lot of other power hitters. this is a good pick up for the rays you're an idiot. and yeah he'll definitly DH. say what you wanna say now but i think you'll be pleased with this deal once the season gets going.
- JeddHampton, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Pat's going to DH. The defense part is moot. He's an on/off hitter. When he hits, you can count on him. When he doesn't hit, you want to smack him in the head.
- inactive, on 01/21/2009, -0/+1Sad, actually. Burrell had his bad times in Philly and never quite lived up to the #1 overall draft status, but amidst the booing and heckling he kept his head down and quietly kept working. He earned that World Series ring last year by carrying the Phillies during the first half of the season, as well as that double in the final game of the WS.
Amaro did a terrible job handling the Burrell situation. It was obvious upper management didn't want Burrell back, but Amaro didn't even offer Burrell arbitration. Offering arbitration would have netted the Phillies a compensatory draft pick as Burrell was a type A free agent if/when Burrell decided to sign elsewhere. The Phillies actually had to give up a draft pick with the signing of Ibanez, along with the many million dollars less that Burrell signed for. Hopefully Ibanez works out and good luck to pat the bat. - elessar2, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Good for Pat. its a shame we couldnt get him back at a price like this. hes better off now as a DH anyways, he is just too slow in the outfield and running the bases. im glad we now have someone we dont have to lift for a late inning defensive replacement, but i will miss The Bat. never thought i would, but i do.
- gkiltz, on 05/10/2009, -0/+0One reason hitting is not better than it is: Unlike the batters of several years ago, today's batters lock into one bating stance, and stick to it come hell or high water!
Even 15-20 years ago, it was not unusual for a batter to see what a pitcher was doing and tweak his batting stance to adjust to it! That is smart hitting. Now, in the post-steroids era, where there won't be as many home runs, there needs to be more smart hitting! Also more managers willing to manufacture runs, and play small ball. So, I don't really think we will see the one-batting-stance-no-matter-what hitters being successful going forward! - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1pat the bat!
can't beat 'em, buy 'em? - dannythepan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0ironic!
- tyzent, on 01/07/2009, -1/+1Pat the Bat is a tool, he has been an ***** to Philly fans and his dedication to the team or the sport in general is laughable.
- m8ymerc1, on 01/06/2009, -2/+1Kinda sucks.
I liked Pat on the Phillies. He unfortunatly wanted a 3 year deal at 12 million a year from Philly. Thats an absurd amount for him and prolly a year to long. The phillies offered him 2 years at 11 or 12 mil, he turned it down cause he wanted more. Now he has 8 mil for 2 years from tampa.
The phillies moved on and signed an older player but with a much better batting avg for the type of pitching Philly faces. - smacksaw, on 01/06/2009, -3/+1Big mistake for the Rays. He's a bit of an ass, he can't play defense and unless it's a fastball down the middle, you can count on him whiffing - preferably when there are 2 outs and men on base in scoring position.
I'd rather have had Giambi.
Really, with Carlos Pena and him in the lineup it's gonna be a lot of 1 for 9 with 6 SO nights. I think in fantasy I'll pick up any pitcher who uses several pitches on the days they face the Rays. - rockon4life45, on 01/06/2009, -7/+2***** you.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -7/+0GO PAT! YEAAAAAAAH GO MAN YEAH ***** YEAAAAH SHOW THEM BRO YOU'RE ALPHA MATERIAL. POW MLB
