- rjr5021, on 04/13/2009, -0/+57"One strike away; nothing-and-two, the count to Hinske. Fans on the their feet; rally towels are being waved. Brad Lidge stretches. The 0-2 pitch — swing and a miss, struck him out! The Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Champions of baseball! Brad Lidge does it again, and stays perfect for the 2008 season! 48-for-48 in save opportunities, and watch the city celebrate! Don't let the 48-hour wait diminish the euphoria of this moment, and the celebration. And it has been 28 years since the Phillies have enjoyed a World Championship; 25 years in this city with a team that has enjoyed a World Championship, and the fans are ready to celebrate. What a night!" - The Best Call I've ever heard.
RIP Harry - richid, on 04/13/2009, -0/+52I grew up listening to Harry call the games and I am seriously going to miss that familiar voice. So happy he got to see them win the series last year and that I had the pleasure of listening to him call the games.
'..long drive, watch this baby, outta' here!' - tmac1361, on 04/13/2009, -0/+51Summer won't sound the same in Philadelphia. I will miss the man tremendously.
- tidu, on 04/13/2009, -0/+51His voice was so recognizable... it'll be sad watching these games now. At least he lived long enough to see the Phillies win last year- it's one of those odd things, isn't it?
- FirstCuts, on 04/13/2009, -0/+35I feel like this clip is a great way to remember him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyGUMuW8CFs
- ethanator1088, on 04/13/2009, -0/+28This is sad sad news. At least he got to see his Fightins win one more.
- danomolis, on 04/13/2009, -1/+27I don't know baseball without Harry K. Goodbye old friend.
- rwbrinso, on 04/13/2009, -0/+21RIP Harry.
- visionsofhoff, on 04/13/2009, -0/+19I'll never forget hearing him singing "High Hopes".
- klshel, on 04/13/2009, -0/+19It's always sad to lose a living piece of baseball lore.
- MCMor, on 04/13/2009, -0/+19Rest in peace Harry. You're outta here, and will be sorely missed. The game won't be the same without you.
- KrisStrong, on 04/29/2009, -0/+17Kalas was the only voice I ever knew when watching NFL highlight clips.
- visionsofhoff, on 04/13/2009, -0/+17Its listening to people call in to 610 or 950 and tell a Harry story and you can tell they are about to cry.
- xdeliriumx, on 04/13/2009, -1/+17Ugh. He was the only Philly announcer worth listening to. Philly is in mourning today.
RIP Harry - JoeHague, on 04/13/2009, -0/+16Harry is with Whitey now.
- Holle, on 04/13/2009, -0/+15I still remember his call on Schmidt's 500th home run vs the Pirates.
- glxyjones, on 04/13/2009, -0/+15RIP Harry
You and Merrill (Reese) were the voices of my childhood.
Thank you. - Crazyredivan, on 04/13/2009, -0/+13That just gave me goosebumps all over again. I've only ever known his voice calling the games. It's so sad.
- smjenkins, on 04/13/2009, -0/+12wow....those are some BIG shoes to fill. todays game is going to be weird to watch...
RIP Harry - silv3r189, on 04/13/2009, -0/+12If you grew up in Philadelphia, you know he was the greatest announcer in broadcast history. This is truly a sad day.
- Crazyredivan, on 04/13/2009, -0/+11Hate to give you a history lesson, but Philly was only to be a temporary capital for 10 years until Washington could be constructed. It was decided that the capital would move as part of a compromise over who would pay the debt of the Revolutionary War.
And you are still a jerk. If you hate Philly so much, why are you even commenting on the passing of one of our favorite people? - Crazyredivan, on 04/13/2009, -1/+12It's cheesesteak, and you're a jerk.
- cartmam114, on 04/13/2009, -0/+11He was Philadelphia Baseball.. if you know a phillies fan they have done his voice numerous times and this is so freaking sad. Rip Harry the K
- sublimer, on 04/13/2009, -0/+11I'm sitting in class doing my best not to cry. I loved that voice and unfortunately it took this to realize how much of a role he played in memories of summer and baseball. Philly fans get a bad rap, but it's because we love our teams, and Harry was just as much a member of the Phillies as Chase Utley or Ryan Howard are. I'm glad one of his last memories will be us winning the World Series, he helped carry the team and the fans through some tough years. You will be missed dearly, and Philadelphia loves you Harry.
- cowboy86, on 04/13/2009, -0/+10I cried.
- lnxfi, on 04/13/2009, -0/+10I'm listening to Pierre Robert on WMMR talk about it right now. Sad as heck. He was practically the voice of the Phillies.
Game starts in 2 minutes. He'll be there in spirit. - BrokenVisage, on 04/13/2009, -0/+10Just can't believe it.... watching my Phils will never be the same. I'm only 26 but thanks for the memories Harry, so glad you were apart of our World Series win last year.
- MCMor, on 04/13/2009, -0/+9http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbJrAAaUcKg Classic.
- TheEricinator, on 04/13/2009, -0/+9His son lives down the hall from me in my dorm right now.
RIP Harry
All the best to the Kalas family. - dpbBryan, on 04/13/2009, -1/+9I hope somebody takes a ***** on your dead body one day.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -0/+8Audio of the last 3 outs: http://onthedlpodcast.com/clips/phils_champs_harry ...
It's a tough day in Philly. - serif69, on 04/13/2009, -1/+9I was never a Phillies fan, but I certainly knew of Kalas. His voice is legendary, most recognizable from all of the NFL Films productions. Nothing was ever as dramatic as when Harry narrated it. RIP.
- catchbigd22, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7Sign the petition for a silent broadcast.
http://digg.com/d1od26 - Ultimate5metal, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7Oh man...I learned about his death fro a speaker in my Supply Chain class today, I was really upset. I felt like a part of my family died with him, going to the ball games or even watching them in the summer as a kid and hearing his voice was comforting and familiar.
It's as if a chapter of my life's closed now. - magneticdozer, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7i agree its going to be so weird to not hear "outta here" again
- tomatoflight, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7very sad, his voice 'made' NFL films highlights. r.i.p. harry
- KnightMareInc, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7wow. Atleast he got to see the phillies win another championship
- AzzidReign, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7First Harry Kalas..now Bob Sheppard is withering...
The last great generation of famous broadcasters/announcers is slowly fading away. Remember their voices, you won't hear too many guys like them in the future.
RIP Mr. Kalas. - thenorwegian, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6very sad, RIP. I grew up hearing his voice, very distinct and soothing. He'll be missed greatly
- tidu, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6You're an *****. Sure we have our problems but no city is America is without problems. If you stopped being a dick you might see that.
- chocula78, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6I was never a big Phillies fan, but I grew up in Philly and am a die hard Philly fan. Losing Harry is devastating. Give Gene Hart a big hug for us all, Harry. God's got the best play by play men Philly ever knew.
- ThinkIcouldburn, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6I hope the TV broadcast of today's game has no commentary. I think that would be a classy thing to do. Baseball season already has been filled with too much tragedy and death this season.
- FeloniusMonkey, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6Most people who have gotten jumped in the 700 level tend to be a bit pissy about Philly after that :-P
You're probably just another pathetic Mets fan who gives the others a bad name. - Crazyredivan, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6They're saying he had minor surgery before the season, but KYW is reporting this:
"KYW's Bill Campbell, Kalas' predecessor as the on-air voice of the Phillies, told KYW Newsradio on Monday afternoon that Kalas had been having "leg circulation problems" since before the beginning of the baseball pre-season, and had undergone some kind of heart procedure recently to address those problems." - dpbBryan, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6lol @ Steak and Cheese.
I'm sorry, what perfect city are you from again? - jimsowden, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5He was the best in the Business.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 04/13/2009, -1/+6Sorry, did I just hear you right LMControl?
Did you just say you wanted to accept Digg's biggest dbag award? - MYdigitalLUNG, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5rest in peace, Harry. the city of Philadelphia will never be the same without you... you were our voice. thank you for the memories!
- ratbear, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5RIP The Voice of God
