- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -4/+37Dear Chase,
I feel like I can call you Chase because you and me are so much alike. I would love to meet you some day. It would be great to have a catch. I know I can't throw as fast as you, but I think you would be impressed with my speed. I love your hair. You run fast. Do you have a good relationship with your father? Me neither. These are all things we can talk about and more. I know you have not been getting my letters because I know you would write back if you did, and I hope you write back this time and we get to be good friends. I am sure our relationship would be a real home run.
Mac. - furburglar, on 11/03/2009, -2/+21Surprisingly rare to have the two best teams actually face off in the world series. I hope it goes to Game 7 and it stays this good. Don't care who wins, it's just good baseball.
- Rastaman108037, on 11/03/2009, -0/+17I was rooting for the dolphins to win this game. Oh well, next Stanley cup match perhaps.
- mbonzo531, on 11/03/2009, -0/+12I am gonna take a chance here and hope that there are some true baseball fans to converse with. Girardi made a big mistake starting Burnett tonight. Every sports outlet I heard and read advocated a start by Gaudin in order to have a Burnett start on extra rest for game six with the backup of Andy Pettite on 3 days rest. Burnett gave up 6 runs in 2+ innings today. Now they have a question mark start from Pettite on short reast, if the Yankees lose the World Series Girardi is getting fired for this decision alone.
- CourageWulf, on 11/03/2009, -7/+18Thx for the double play you gave us Jeter. I was getting worried.
- mbonzo531, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Strike that from the record please.
- qazws, on 11/03/2009, -2/+9So how are the Mets doing?
- superkeer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7Pettite is a big game pitcher. But he's older, and like Burnett, on 3-days. Sabathia may be good on 3-days, but assuming that'll extend to the other guys is a big risk. The Phillies may have gotten some real confidence finally busting out with some offense tonight and if they hit Pettiite early then Girardi's miscalculated a crucial element of World Series baseball and it will depend entirely on Yankee bats and mistakes by the Phillies.
So if the Phillies can get some good pitching in game 6, then, well, they have their entire pitching staff to throw at Sabathia in game 7. And pitching two games on three days rest is one thing, but three games on that kind of schedule is entirely different.
Could seriously be game on, and lets hope so, cause these two teams really should go 7 games. - Jalh, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6every time phillis win a game appears in digg the very next day, when they yankees won the past games none of them were seen here.
- paulvq, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6Um, no. I'll trust ESPN before I trust "cooper's pick"
- badwithcomputer, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5Michael: Did you see the game last night?
Jim: Which one?
Michael: Any of 'em? - derlin, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5I agree, Burnett really didn't have a chance against Lee. Lee has been on fire this entire post season. I haven't seen anyone mention Pedro pitching tomorrow night though, he has a certain problem with NY...
How about Utley though? and Werth. Anyone seen Howard though? - TheRealDeuce, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Aw *****. There's stickers!
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Funny how the digg commentary tells you to add to the discussion with relevant links, and you guys bashed the cooper's pick back to the bronx article which seems to be written by a very reputable company (the sports network). Anyhow, go Phillies.
- WannaBsober, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3This sorta sounds like the start of another " Stan "
- partysan, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3But Tim McCarver said 3 days rest is the key to winning this series :P
- iwriteyourmusic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3I didn't know that the sports critics felt that way, but as a Yankee fan i tend to agree... though not for the exact same reason. If Sabathia couldn't beat Lee, how could Burnett? And in Philli? I know this is bad baseball to say, but game 5 had everything going for it to be a Phillies win, so why waste a tired Burnett in the process?
I live in NYC and I'm a huge Yankee fan, and yet deep down I wanted it to go 6 (or 7) just for the chance to see the Yanks win at home. Remember game 7 in 2001 when the Dbacks came from behind to win at home? It's crazy exciting, and this could be the same. The bottom of the ninth could be my favorite part of the sport! - inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3I don't like being left out of jokes either so here: http://factandfiction-bridget.blogspot.com/2009/10 ...
- PrometheusBorn, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3As a Phillies fan, I'm not sure if they're going to make it if Howard doesn't start doing something other than striking out. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but I can't help to think how much of a difference there would be in the series if Howard hit one third as well as Chase through this series.
- OasisR123, on 11/03/2009, -1/+4I'm just glad the red sox are not around, this is good baseball
- jrobbi, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3dugg down for shameless self promotion.
- jshhmr, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3That's because most people HATE the ***** Yankees. Like they need a 27th world series win. Plus, Yankees fans are the biggest ***** on the planet!
- PrometheusBorn, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I don't suddenly hate Howard because he's not performing right now. I'm just saying that if Howard was half the Howard we all know and love I don't think we'd be trailing the series.
- furburglar, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I drafted Lee very early in my fantasy league, only to see him suck, then be mediocre, then brilliant. And then suck. and then be incredible, and finally get tired down the stretch.
The only sure thing in all of pitching is Mariano Rivera in the post-season. To bet on Lee putting in another stunning performance was, at BEST, 2 in 3, about the same as AJ, a bit better than Gaudin. Girardi wanted to take no chances and wrap this thing up and go home, and went to his best available pitcher. I respect his decision. And he's not going to get fired for it.
- baseball fan - faceless323, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2***** YOU WHALE!!!
- Tegurit34, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I respectfully disagree. Here are my reasons Burnett on short rest was a better idea than starting Gaudin:
- Burnett has performed well on short rest in the past. We don't have many games worth of a sample size to judge it traditionally with accuracy, but the fine authors at Fangraphs.com have shown using Pitch F/X that his "stuff" doesn't deteriorate much when he does. When the game was over, Pitch F/X showed his stuff once again did not suffer from short rest. What was to blame was his lack of control; but how can we be certain that his lack of control was due to short rest and not due to AJ Burnett being a pitcher who's known in his career for having average control (over a season) at best?
- Chad Gaudin is a right-handed sinker/slider pitcher. These generally do extremely well against other right-handed batters but extremely poorly against lefties. Gaudin in particular has an **extreme** platoon split over his career, showing that he's an ace against righties but the average lefty OPSes .820 off of him. Gaudin was very helpful during the season for the Yankees as a starter, but it would be foolish to let lefties like Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez and Chase Utley (as well as switch hitters like Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins) combine 15 or 20 plate appearances against him in a single game -- let alone the World Series. - Tegurit34, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1They shouldn't have let Gaudin do anything but relief work against right-handed batters. Burnett on short rest wasn't an optimal choice, but it was the best choice the Yankees had because the drop off from 1-3 and 4-5 is a really big one. Bigger than Burnett on full rest compared to Burnett on 3 days rest.
I see what you're saying, but the Yankees just didn't have a viable #4 against the Phillies. If it was against the Cardinals (a very right-handed lineup), you would have a much stronger point. - shauncorleone, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1First WS to go past 5 games since what, 2003? It's been a real nerveracking back-and-forth, to be sure.
- mbonzo531, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1So are you arguing that Burnett wouldn't have been any better with 2 days extra rest. My point was that they shouldn't have tried to win game 5 and just taken a chance with gaudin, that way game 6 and 7 are extremely in the Yankees favor. Now that game 5 is a loss anyway game 6 and 7 are weak without all 3 starters available with ample rest.
- shauncorleone, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Fortunately Utley and Werth have surrounded Howard's embarrassing 12(?) K's with plenty of offensive production. Besides, Philly likely wouldn't be in the WS if it wasn't for Howard, so I'm slightly less pissed at him.
- markintosh, on 11/03/2009, -2/+3Just let it end so I can get back to family guy
- shauncorleone, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1It was Girardi's plan all along to use only 3 starters in the World Series, though I can't say I agree w/ that approach. Sabbathia's a workhorse, but Burnett doesn't have as much experience on short rest and Pettitte, while legendary in the postseason, has aged.
I honestly can't make a single prediction for Game 6. Pedro's been uncharacteristically good in the postseason, while Pettitte is still the all-time postseason wins leader. The Yankees will continue to miss Cabrera, but Howard's stone cold and Victorino may be playing hurt. The only thing I can be sure about is that I'm in for at least one more night of emotional instability, no matter how it ends. - shauncorleone, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Rivera's only given up the one run, but his 2-inning save in Game 2 was hardly a sure thing.
- SooperSonic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Well, there was a Marshall-UCF college football contest on ESPN Sunday night. Not quite NFL, but it was still football, dammit!
- bag2p, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1ahhh . . . you're in for it.
- kirbs2001, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1Yankees Suck!
- dha07030, on 11/03/2009, -5/+4Please get rid of these spammers Digg. ^^^
- nofreedom4theUS, on 11/03/2009, -3/+1They do it every year. They should move the world series around football. Baseball is crap.
- bladzalot, on 11/03/2009, -4/+2Don't get me wrong, I am a red blooded American, but I do not get why we had no Sunday Night Football because of the World Series. Anyone that still thinks baseball is americas biggest sport, is living in a fantasy world. The World Series is fun, but only when there is nothing else on TV. Cancelling Sunday Night Football is just as sacreligous as cancelling Church, is that next?
- ChanM, on 11/03/2009, -4/+2If Philly Fans think Pedro is going to be lights out think again. Pedro will be destroyed tomorrow.
