- lepetitmousse, on 07/12/2009, -2/+41Dugg because i dont even need to look to know what play it is.
- Yankees368, on 07/12/2009, -1/+33Lower resolution, please.
- zzphile, on 07/12/2009, -2/+23Would have kicked more ass if he was actually beaten by the throw... Safe!
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -3/+20I did have to watch it twice.
- ShoeSh1ne, on 07/12/2009, -1/+15He was safe though...
The catch made last night to keep what's his names no-hitter was better. - PuddMaster, on 07/12/2009, -1/+15i saw that live on TV and it was a ridiculous play
- thewhits, on 07/12/2009, -4/+13Tie goes to the runner.
- IHeartNY, on 07/12/2009, -1/+9Why are the people saying he was safe getting buried? I decided to look over the play because I am skeptical of Marty Foster (the umpire). An out is made when the player catching the ball has CONTROL of it. In this picture http://tinyurl.com/n3jzxz you can see the entire ball meaning he was not gripping it and therefore did not have control. In contrast to this picture http://tinyurl.com/lv49oo You cannot see the foot of the runner but notice only the upper part of the leg moves while his foot placement remains the same. From another angle http://tinyurl.com/mtzg3p you can see the runners foot on the base but notice the glove compared to this picture http://tinyurl.com/myceam You can see the runners upper leg moving forward while his foot remains on the base just like from the other angle. You can also see the closing of the glove. The replay clearly shows the runner was safe even the announcers on SNY agree. This was a difficult play for Foster to call but remember that he is the same umpire that called Derek Jeter out on a steal of third even though there was no tag. His explanation was "You don't have to be tagged out, if the ball beats you, you're out.". He has a history of making up his own rules and should not be a major league umpire.
The first two pictures were taken from http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?conten ... and the second two from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu2FyzOWKPE. - ThinkIcouldburn, on 07/12/2009, -2/+10I thought it was going to be the pop up that Jorge Posada caught bare handed yesterday. That made me look twice.

Although the play Murphy made there also made me say wow. - Zasz, on 07/12/2009, -4/+12Tie only goes to the runner in little league.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7Clearly out? That was practically as bang-bang as it can get without being safe.
- TevinC, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7Was a great play but it doesn't make up for all the egregious errors Murphy's made this season. Watch the ESPN's "Not Top Ten" for the Mets and you'll see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv344HLDjBU
- wdw25, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7What was Chone Figgins thinking? Did he think he'd get away with that?
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6That made no sense.
- elindy, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4It's a really tough call for the 1st base ump. For close calls at 1st, the ump generally looks at the runner, and listens for the sound of the ball hitting the glove. On a soft toss like that though, the ump is going to be forced to try to watch both ball and the runner. Hard to see them both on a bang-bang play like that.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Stubby, what on earth are you talking about? There's a difference between the actual play and what the ump calls. You're saying if a runner beats the ball to the bag, but the ump calls him out, he didn't actually beat the ball to the bag.
Seriously, have you ever listened to a commentary on a whole baseball game?
While the rulebook doesn't explicitly state "tie goes to the runner," it says something to the effect of the ball must arrive into the first baseman's mitt before the runner touches the base; hence tie goes to the runner.
Also, I accidentally reported you, so feel free to do the same with me :) - slunktoday, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Nice analysis and breakdown. But your use of logic and proof is lost on them.
- holzp, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Its like Nintendo Baseball circa 1984.
- 8347, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5A great play but definitely not one of the best! The runner looked safe and the 1st basemen just tossed the ball hoping to make a play.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5Is this a joke? I can't figure out why you've gotten so many diggs, other than that maybe diggers don't know their basic baseball rules.
- tehdiggster, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I watched it five times because the video kept showing it again.
- PuddMaster, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4me too, bud..probably the only high point of the year for us mets fans :-/
- sdquinn, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I was hoping it was what it was. :D
- zaklampert, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2for some reason the video doesn't work for me
here it is on mlb http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?conten ... - ProfessorRiffs, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3Go Mets!
- Jerky1312, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2I think he was falling backwards after the swing, feet got tangled with Posada and was trying to brace himself not to fall. I don't think he was intentionally trying to disrupt Posada. He backs off right away once he regains his balance. Posada didn't see him, so I can understand why he would think Figgins was trying to mess up the play, but it wasn't warranted in my opinion.
Also, Figgins doesn't knock the glove off. When Posada feels Figgins on his back and feet, he tries to push him off with the glove hand and the glove gets loose and eventually comes off before the barehanded catch. Figgins wasn't being dirty.
Also, barehanded catches don't impress me that much. Especially one that isn't a line drive, but on a pop up. If you watch enough baseball games, every now and than you will see fans catch balls barehanded, some even on line drives, so to see a catcher catch a pop up barehanded doesn't impress me. Having him not get distracted too much by Figgins getting tangled up with him is impressive though. - nahog99, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Ya he looked safe, but in the spur of the moment 98% of you would call that an out being that the play was so spectacular. And come on be honest, that play was SOOO close i dont think a human could accurately judge that anyway. id say ask 1000 people to call that an out or not at first glimpse, IN THE PARK, and ud prolly get around a 50/50 split for outs and safes. However thats disregarding the fact that it was an Amazing play which would definitely sway most people to call it an out.
- trackandfield, on 07/12/2009, -3/+5You've got to love the end where you can see the reaction from the crowd, they loved it.
- sdquinn, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Of course one play can't save a season. Trust me, I'm a Mets fan. Our original slogan was "To err is human, To forgive is a Mets fan."
But it's still unbelievable. - RiperSnifle, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3I can do that. I just don't feel like it.
- Ugotownedo, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3I don't even watch baseball and even I can appreciate how truly ***** awesome that was.
- sdquinn, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2And there's a lot of season left - right now, I agree, but I remain cautiously optimistic for another month or two at least.
- rockon4life45, on 07/12/2009, -2/+4Dugg because I knew what this was before watching. I kicked a small child when I jumped out of my seat watching this game on TV.
- slunktoday, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1I did not realize that the Mets are the only team with injuries this year. What are the odds!
EDIT - added a sarcastic comment, then removed it, as I could not ascertain your intent. - Jerky1312, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1It wasn't a simple behind the back play, not only did he have to react quickly, because the ball unexpectedly bounced off first base, he was also in a horrible position/angle and he made it perfectly while also running. Also, take into account, Murphy isn't a 1st basemen. He's only played 33 games at first base in his career.
- notvegan, on 07/12/2009, -2/+3***** the mets.

Are you telling me that you don't know little leaguers that can make some of those routine plays?
also a bonus:

- Jaq524, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Yeah, he looked safe. Still an amazing effort though in that play. This kind of thing happens all the time though-- umps are part of the game and rarely reverse any call.
- plainOldFool, on 07/24/2009, -0/+1Without looking at the video, let me guess, Luis Castillo is involved. Something involving a little league pop up.
- Areid10990, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1"I'm not even a basketball fan"
Huh...? - jhusker4, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Is there such a thing as a Great MLB umpire?
- hawksfan03, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2i saw this live so I know it's true but I couldn't see a baseball in the video
- slunktoday, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Obviously you're not a golfer.
- catchbigd22, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2Bury for Mets
