- AmyVernon, on 11/19/2008, -1/+16All I can say is, the Yanks had better shape up next season. Nice to get Swisher, but if they don't concentrate on pitching, it won't really matter much.
- jfdolier, on 11/19/2008, -0/+11R.I.P. Nick Swisher's Goatee
- AdeleMor, on 11/19/2008, -0/+10agree with amy- it's all about the pitchers for the yanks.
- chicagojack, on 11/19/2008, -0/+9Hank is going to need to win quick with his new stadium
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8They're gonna need more than Swisher. They better pray for some angels in the outfield.
- openthink, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6in the steroids era who knows why players' batting performances fall off a cliff. you'd like to think swisher just had a bad year. welcome to the zoo. he's supposed to be a good guy, well respected, etc. if he continues to hit .200 his dream of becoming a Yankee will quickly turn to...get me the f*** out of here asap.
- doublefelix, on 11/20/2008, -1/+6I am sure those patient and understanding Yankees fans will make him feel just like his mom is cooking in the next room.
- iammzac, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Swisher Sweets ftw
- zabat, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5Check his BABIP you'll see he had one of the most statistically unlucky seasons in baseball history. In the Yanks lineup he will probably hit .263 (BA isnt everything) 28 HRs with 88 BBs. Not a bad #2 hitter for their lineup.
- jfdolier, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4Dugg for the absurdly random choice of .263
- defenswens26, on 11/20/2008, -0/+4I'm still surprised the Sox traded him. Didn't see it coming.
- Tegurit34, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3The Yankees absolutely swindled the Sox in the Swisher deal, but playing him at first base would be stupid. He's a worse defender at the position at the bottom of the defensive spectrum than he is as a outfield corner. He's a +3.5 win player in a corner, but damn near replacement level at first. My mind will be blown if the Yankees don't know this. Swisher just isn't good enough with the bat to play at first base, let alone his inexperience with glovework there, and it's not that hard to figure out that playing him at his defensive strength -- where it's harder to find good offensive production anyways -- is the wise thing to do.
- mrnobody546, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Gosh you'd think that with him moving to New York he'd at least get past first base in the bed-....
...Oh wait..... - halvertos, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3as a sox fan i was glad to see swisher leave.
- ngmcs8203, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2When he played in Oakland he was an average build guy and rolled with Byrnes. Both follow the same "good guy" role and have both come out against steroids. Maybe I trust Byrnes too much since we went to the same high school (on year apart) but I think they're both clean.
- coopaloop, on 11/20/2008, -4/+6Swisher's overrated. There I said it. The Yankees paid too much for a guy who hit .219 last year.
- cadmiumpaint, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3is he supposed to pick up the slack for A-Rod in the fall when he forgets how to hit? Yankees will be 3rd place or worse next yr in the AL East.
- Tegurit34, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Batters who hit line drives 21% of the time don't hit .200 without a ton of bad luck. He won't hit line drives at that kind of clip again, but he's absolutely not a true talent .200 hitter. He actually should have hit closer to .290 with that amount of line drives combined with the amount of times he strikes out -- so he's not a true talent 21% line drive hitter either (it was a career high for him, and not even the best hitters in history have ever sustained that kind of line drive production). If he gets back to his 18% line drive self, he'll hit right around his .260 BA career norms with neutral luck.
FWIW, Bill James projects an .810 OPS for Swish. I personally believe that's a little pessimistic, so it's looking good for the Yankees because the White Sox really stupidly sold low.
But if Swish plays first base for the Yankees, then the Yankees do something equally stupid too. - Nephersir7, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Baseball isnt a "sport" that requires anything but skills and experience as opposed to hard work and physical activity
- vsujohn2, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3I thought Swisher was the name of a kind of toilet. So I was initially thinking that the Yankees were indeed so ***** that they have a ***** toilet playing first base.
- macromorgan, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2They're playing him at first?
Mark Teixeria is going to be pissed to find out his price just went down as a result of this... - zabat, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3I'm still surprised Oakland traded him. Didn't see it coming.
- zabat, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Random, no. Spot on, you watch and see.
- jfdolier, on 11/20/2008, -2/+3Really? You didn't see a guy who hit .215 last year getting traded?
- mfed3, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Hopefully this doesnt affect my oneseason.com account. Making mad loot.
