- hydroplane, on 04/18/2008, -0/+34Doesn't matter, Julio Franco played until he was almost 90.
- IDIGTHEDIGG, on 04/18/2008, -2/+30Only if that girl said she was 19 rather then 17.... I would be in ALOT less trouble
- mytibt, on 04/18/2008, -0/+26Ok Greg Oden, now it's your turn to fess up and tell everyone you're 37
- trujillonorte, on 04/18/2008, -0/+20I wonder how old El Duque Hernandez is?
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+15his contract will need restructuring now.
remember that little ***** danny almonte who was 15 when he struck out all
those 12 year olds in the little leage world series? - Shiner76, on 04/18/2008, -2/+16I love how he wants to "unburden himself". I'm sure that makes it feel much better for all parties involved
- boozinf, on 04/18/2008, -4/+15But Tejada would never, ever use steroids.
Funny how Jose Canseco, of all people, keeps looking more and more credible. - BadseedJR, on 04/18/2008, -1/+12Isn't he still playing?
/joke - ThomasMarshall, on 04/18/2008, -0/+11Has anyone read 'Moneyball'? There's a great anecdote about Tejada. The manager is growing increasingly frustrated because even though he's the best hitter on the Oakland A's he swings at EVERYTHING and they want him to take more pitches, more base on balls--in keeping with the Oakland team strategy. In a burst of frustration he tells the coach, "look, we have a saying in the Dominican Republic. NOBODY WALKS OFF THE ISLAND!"
- JointheArmy, on 04/18/2008, -0/+11Played? Julio Franco is STILL playing. He played for the Mets last year.
- sagat, on 04/18/2008, -0/+9You can see why he did it, 19 year old kid dreaming of being a pro, coach says you would have a much better chance if you were still 17, scout asks you your age. It would be difficult not to lie.
- Bologner, on 04/18/2008, -0/+9Well, as long as his name isn't Danny Almonte.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/18/2008, -0/+7While it's obvious that he's been telling the truth, it's also obvious he's not doing it to "clean up the sport" as he often says. If that were the case, he'd name *everyone* he knows or thinks used steroids and let the chips fall where they may. Instead every year he trickles out a couple of names in a book. The act is a little tired at this point.
- emroc, on 04/18/2008, -1/+8In other news, Rogers Clemens has recently confessed to being immortal.
- investr, on 04/18/2008, -0/+7Breach of contract...misrepresentation...
- Bukowsky, on 04/18/2008, -3/+9Great! This guy is just full of surprises.... Go Astros!
- Gr1nch, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5Good Trade O's. Good trade.
- Number23, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5It's payback from the O's for the Glenn Davis trade.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+5free agent, but yes:
Julio César Robles Franco (born August 23, 1958, in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball infielder who is currently a free agent. Franco is currently the oldest active player in the major leagues at the age of 49. - greenlight2001, on 04/18/2008, -1/+5His contract will.
- Clumber, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4Recently there was an interview with Conseco where he said his motivation for exposing the use of "performance enhancers" was to bring Major League Baseball to its knees. Not to clean it up. If you review what he has said, when he has said it, and how he clearly is holding back (or wants us to believe that anyhow) more information... it all makes sense when coming from a perspective of wanting to punish the MLB. The longer it drags out, the continuing hint of even more...
- BentCorner, on 04/18/2008, -0/+4The media guide? Then he didn't lie about his age then. The A's, O's, and the Astros would have had to make copies of his green card and have it on file. If his correct age was on his green card, everyone he has ever worked for would know just how old he is.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/18/2008, -1/+5ESPN is a joke. If the athlete is popular, they kiss ass big time. Did you read Jason Stark's article when Clemens was first named on the Mitchell report? "You can't compare Clemens to Bonds. Bonds is a cheater. Clemens hasn't proven to be one. They're two different situations." Oh, what a surprise. They're defending the athlete that they've done commercials with.
Bottom line: ESPN has an obvious bias to the marketable star and it shows in everything they do. - PropCulture, on 04/18/2008, -2/+5If he's now saying he's 33 rather than 31, my money is on his age being 35.
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -0/+3There were reports also about Albert Pujols being older than he claimed as well
- spaceymacey, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3at least he made good money out of it.
- bigdsinferno, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Here's the video of him being caught in the lie.
http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopag ... - ngmcs8203, on 04/18/2008, -3/+5This shouldn't be a big deal.
- jc7012, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2Last i heard he was dating a 30 year old.
seriously. - joeadk, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3In all likelihood, the Astros already knew this. They have to assume that any Dominican player who was signed in that way might be 2-4 years older than they say.
It matters when you consider that shortstops have a shorter shelf life, and at 33 might be reaching his end at that position. However he's a terrible shortstop, so they probably don't care, they signed him to hit and he should be fine for 4 or 5 years. He's only signed through next year. - dave6, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2rtfa
"In the course of a media interview, it was brought to our attention that the date that we carry for Tejada's year of birth is incorrect," Astros general manager Ed Wade said. "His green card, his driver's license, everything that he uses personally shows '74 as his date of birth, (but) the media guide and that type of information shows '76. - BentCorner, on 04/18/2008, -1/+3That means he lied on his visa paperwork too, Martha Stewart went to prison for lying to the federal government. If they're not going to deport him, he ought to at least be charged with falsifying his application for a green card.
- davewashere, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2The man has held a grudge against MLB for a long time. Even while he was still playing he was making accusations of racism against former teams. He didn't really push the steroid issue until he was out of the game, because he basically had to admit to using them himself. Now he's out to humiliate everyone who has ever crossed him the wrong way. I'd say he's doing a pretty good job with that, as unintelligent as many suspect he may be. In a few short years he's gone from being a broke convicted criminal under house arrest to a relatively wealthy co-author who got revenge on his enemies and is now seen by many as the "good guy."
- jc7012, on 04/18/2008, -0/+2yea, the age thing is like a safety net, in case they don't impress the coaches right away. Though you'd think after a few years you'd come clean.
- jackalsclaw, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1Franco began the 2008 season as a first baseman for the Tigres de Quintana Roo (Cancun) in the Mexican League. wow He's in Single in Cancun , playing baseball , and spending some of the millions from his baseball career. That is an amazingly sweet life.
- innocentsinner, on 04/18/2008, -2/+3Wow, dude'll be 50 by the end of this season
- mparker7410, on 04/18/2008, -1/+22 years? That's nothing, Albert Pujols is probably 10 years older than he claims.
- jackalsclaw, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1too old
- boozinf, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1I definitely agree with the comments here. Canseco could very well be as evil and self-serving as they come, but not only is he credible now, he might even be effectively crafty. What a world : )
- danqueca, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1And his name is Miguel Tejeda not Tejada.... seriously
- alexkball, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1...not to mention full of steroids...Go Cheating!
- smacksaw, on 04/18/2008, -8/+9The Astros should have hired $cientologists to interview him. "WHAT ARE YOUR CRIMES? WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?"
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -2/+2really who gives a *****, end the god damn war.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1Money has caused MANY a man and woman to compromise on their morals. I don't know if I'm going to get all up in arms about this. If the Astros want to restructure his contract because of this, that's their right. End of story. With the amount of lying politicians do, I'm not going to hold his feet to the fire over this.
- NightOwl4, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1Like Mutumbo Who knows how old that guy is.
- jackalsclaw, on 04/19/2008, -1/+1Fatties with alot of skill
- inactive, on 04/18/2008, -1/+1My fantasy team is so screwed now.
- logiktrip, on 04/18/2008, -0/+0"In the course of a media interview, it was brought to our attention that the date that we carry for Tejada's year of birth is incorrect," Astros general manager Ed Wade said. "His green card, his driver's license, everything that he uses personally shows '74 as his date of birth, (but) the media guide and that type of information shows '76."
So, front page of digg for a typo. - BadseedJR, on 04/18/2008, -2/+1Can we stop calling baseball players "athletes" at this point? Sure, some are athletic, but some a are giant fatties.
- mparker7410, on 04/18/2008, -2/+1If you were the clown Canseco is you would do the same.
