- itc518, on 06/29/2009, -3/+33Even if you are a Yankee hater you have to respect Mariano, he is the greatest closer of all time.

- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15One of my all-time favorite Yankee players. That guy owns the plate.
- mwerb6, on 06/29/2009, -1/+13And it came against the mets. A double win.
- Misinformant, on 06/29/2009, -0/+11But his first RBI was more fun to watch
- frank2, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12Mo is the man!
- str1fe, on 06/29/2009, -1/+12TODAY ONLY, WE ARE OFFERING NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE RBIS AGAINST CROSSTOWN RIVALS! YOU ONLY PAY SHIPPING AND HANDLING!
- tomato1324, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10you have got to be kidding me. having the most saves does not automatically make you the best closer. he can't nail down a game in the most important situations. he's blown more saves ratio-wise than rivera by a LONG shot. and trevor hoffman hasn't been pitching in the AL east against some of the best hitting in baseball his entire career. thats not to say that hoffman isnt a great closer, because he is, but nobody is mariano.
- diggmeordie, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9What an amazing career! 500 saves and only 39 years old in some of the best shape in the league. This guy is going to hit 600 and will be forever remembered in the Hall of Fame. What an incredible accomplishment especially considering his success mostly stems from just one pitch.
- tomato1324, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8yes it was indeed. the dugout got more excited for that then they do for anybody else hitting a homer lol
- kaiyraa, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7First career RBI at that!
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9If you're not a fan of sports, then you're not a real man.
- tomato1324, on 06/29/2009, -1/+7why do we post anything on digg? because we like it. thats what digg is for. sooo.....yea you're an idiot.
- mbonzo531, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6Imagine what K-rod's reaction would have been if he got his 500th save off the Yankees. You gotta love how humble Mo is.
- NeoCortex, on 06/29/2009, -0/+5I absolutely hate the Yankees (I am a Sox fan, afterall), but it's hard not to have anything but respect for Rivera. He was real workhorse that goes in each day and pitches damn well. And he actually comes across as a decent guy, not a complete ***** like a lot of Yankees. The only other current Yankee I would say I actually like is Swisher, who seems like he just enjoys playing baseball.
- tomato1324, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4too soon *****.
- Red1000, on 06/29/2009, -0/+4I hate the Yankees, but Rivera is the best closer of all time. Look at his numbers. Having an ERA under 2.00 for a season is fantastic & he's done it 8 times. He has a career 2.31 ERA, nearly half a run better than Hoffman's and more than a full run better than Eckersley's.
- Chewie67, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3That was very funny.
The Mets are pathetic. How on Earth do you walk a man that's had 2 AB's in a 16 year career? - tomato1324, on 06/29/2009, -0/+3if it wasnt for your ***** spam, i'd have dugg you up. but nope. you killed it. buried.
- Gazthrak, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2Anyone who got the organization to loosen up on their stringent haircut and facial hair rules is OK in my book.
Nick "Full-Count" Siwsher got a nice 'hawk - itc518, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I am a diehard Yankee fan and I hate the Sox as well but they also have some guys I respect, especially their manager, he is a class act. Mariano is a stand up guy though like many Yankees such as Jeter, Posada, and Pettite, but there are the ***** too, but all teams have *****. I really like Swisher too, he reminds me of Mattingly who was my fav player growing up.
- itc518, on 06/29/2009, -0/+2I posted it because it is a big story and I am a sports fan like many other diggers. There is a sports section on digg, it is not like I submitted it in news.
- KibblesnBitts, on 06/29/2009, -3/+4He will be the last man who will ever wear the number 42 jersey - and I don't know of anyone more deserving of that honor.
- minusthebux, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Trevor Hoffman is the best......at blowing it in every big situation he's ever had. 34 Post season saves for Mo. Eckersely only had 15, but they also played less rounds back then. Not to mention Hoffman has 3 more seasons of being a closer than Rivera.
- ruckus0420, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1great game to watch... you never see two of the best closing pitchers in the game face each other, literally... Francisco picthing to Mariano! It was only his 3rd career at bat & he worked the count on one of the best closing pitchers! It was definitely a game I won't forget watching!!
- Gazthrak, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1There is a sports section on digg for a reason... because some diggers like sports. Shocking.
- daveinNJ81, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1he was on ESPN being very humble. He doesn't play for records or stats....... he plays for the NY Yankees!! gotta love his humbleness. Also if Jonathan Paplebon wants to play for the yankees....... you gotta wait till Mo retires. Hopefully we'll get two more seasons.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+0it was a compliment idiot
- faizal5k, on 06/29/2009, -3/+2damn son you mad crazy...stop hatin on us :)
- macromorgan, on 06/29/2009, -3/+2Rivera is an amazing late inning reliever (so props to him for that) but the save is one of the more over-rated stats in all of baseball. It's one thing to come into a 1 run ballgame in the 8th with the bases loaded and the strike out the side and then pitch a scoreless 9th. It's something completely different to go into the 9th up by 3 runs against the bottom of the order. In each case it'd be considered a save, but only in one case would it be a notable pitching performance.
More evidence the stat needs to be rethought. see: the "save" Wes Littleton got 2 years ago in a 30-3 ballgame. - nekaidesigns, on 06/29/2009, -5/+2two words: Dennis Eckersley.
- factsahoy, on 06/29/2009, -5/+1Relevance?
- prednisonedosag, on 06/29/2009, -5/+0hi is the best
- hDJgangsta, on 06/29/2009, -7/+2He MIGHT be. Until then, it's Hoffman.
It's not Hoffman's fault the national can't see outside a 400 mile radius of the northeast. - bci84, on 06/29/2009, -9/+4No Trevor Hoffman is.
- Barackalypse, on 06/29/2009, -7/+2#1 on the all time saves list is Milwaukee Brewer Trevor Hoffman with 571:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?player ... - kanimara, on 06/29/2009, -10/+3nothing in baseball is worth making it to the front page
- factsahoy, on 06/29/2009, -12/+5Wow, mainstream sports news. Why did you post this on Digg?
Buried. - make7upyours06, on 06/29/2009, -7/+0El Duque!
- factsahoy, on 06/29/2009, -9/+1No, we post stuff on Digg because it's something interesting that might be overlooked by others. We all know where the Google News page is and where ESPN.com is. If the point were to re-post every mainstream news story on the planet, Digg would simply BE the Google News page.
Sooo... you're the idiot, as it turns out. - tomjm5000, on 06/29/2009, -13/+4buried because I hate the yankees
- FMSfreebies, on 06/29/2009, -11/+1no.
